Lo más bonito de leer libros como éste, es darse cuenta lo cercanas que pueden ser las personas que llevo años admirando. La cercanía que da el amor al cine, especialmente al de terror. Leer la emoción con la que Carpenter, Price, Craven, Yuzna, Savini, Gordon y tantos más hablan de su trabajo y cómo se enamoraron de él, hace que les tome todavía más cariño que el que de por sí ya les tengo por sus películas. Todos son muy generosos al hablar de lo que les gusta y lo que no del sistema, y sobre todo de las dificultades que le ven a lograr destacar en un medio tan competitivo.

El libro ya tiene sus añitos y fue extraño leer entrevistas en presente con mucha gente que ya murió, o con personas que apenas estaban iniciándose dentro del género. La entrevista con Sam Raimi, por ejemplo, menciona que es un director que solamente había realizado Evil Dead 1 y 2 y estaba preparando "cierta película" llamada Darkman. También fue interesante ver la poca seriedad con que era tomado el cine de terror y a sus autores. Creo que ahí sí hemos tenido grandes avances.

Las preguntas están bien, aunque tampoco me parecieron geniales y por momentos sentí al autor algo repetitivo en sus temas, pero nada que moleste. Además siempre da gusto encontrarse con datos nuevos. Me sorprendió saber que "Querida, encogí a los niños" iba a ser originalmente producida por Brian Yuzna y dirigida por Stuart Gordon, el cual ya no pudo hacerla por motivos de salud. No puedo ni imaginárme lo que eso hubiera sido.

En resumen, padre libro, disfrutable. El punto malo: la versión para Kindle trae muchísimos errores tipográficos. De repente hay que adivinar en donde termina una oración o en dónde debería haber puntos y comas. Muchísimos detalles de este tipo.

Y no es por angustiarnos, pero acabo de revisar y Roger Corman acaba de cumplir, este 2016, 90 años.

A competent, but hardly brilliant, collection of interviews with various horror film creators. Business questions are emphasized, whereas the creative process is largely ignored, and personal touches are few. As well, there seems to be fear of rocking the boat, as potentially controversial topics are avoided by Wiater and, when brought up by the interviewees, very quickly dismissed by him, as are a few debatable claims by the subjects. Still, the interviews with make-up/effects pros like Stan Winston and Tom Savini make this worth a look.

This is a pretty good collection of interviews with people involved with horror movie production: writers, producers, actors, directors, effects technicians, even a publicist. It's historically interesting, not least because several of the interviewees have since died, but may seem dated to some readers. One caveat is that the ebook edition I read was riddled with errors, and could have used better copy editing.

A very informative read. Stanley Wiater delivers the goods. To be able to go into the minds of those that create nightmares for the screen is a real treat, a definite read for any fan of horror.
