Jean Ziegler is a former professor of sociology at the University of Geneva and the Sorbonne, Paris. He was a Member of Parliament for the Social Democrats in the Federal Assembly of Switzerland from 1981 to 1999. He has also held several positions with the United Nations, especially as Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food from 2000 to 2008, and as a member of the Advisory Committee of the UN Human Rights Council from 2008 to 2012.
This book was a little hard to read — not because of how it was written but because of what it was telling me. Although the stats were a little outdated as the book was written over 10 years ago, the picture still doesn’t look great. We often don’t hear about these global issues (and perhaps I should look out for more global news vs some celeb scandals) on media outlets because it’s been an issue for decades, hence not interesting enough. And perhaps for myself, while I understand and sympathize with the issue, I feel powerless against the sheer scale of it all. Is just being aware enough ? Should I donate my measly money to international organizations ? As explored in this book, there are many causes of hunger and famine. Some are natural causes and some are man-made. My understanding is that at this point, lots of it is man-made. I feel that the issue of hunger is really high up on the priority list because without food, nothing else really matters. You can’t learn if you are hungry. You can’t work if you are hungry. Nutrition is a basic need and hence should be the most foundational effort for global support. Korea had times of poverty, too. North Korea has sent off tens of millions of people due to hunger. We had gone through it and it is still currently happening.
**What can I do? Here are some ideas.**
1. Really dive into understanding the current picture of the issue by reading through websites of international organizations like WFP. It seems pretty comprehensive and I think I will take my time to see what kind of efforts are being made. 2. Once I understand the effort and align myself with it, I hope to donate some money to these organizations. It won’t be a lot but I think I will choose maybe top 3 most important organizations to me and donate regularly. Once it involves money, it stays on your mind. Rather than the money being a sizable impact, it serves as a constant reminder in my head - to stay interested. 3. I also think you should look after neighbors closer to you than people who are so far away. I would also start looking to help physically in the country I live while maintaining the focus on the issue of hunger. Korea may not be a country experiencing widespread hunger and famine, it is not perfect and many people suffer from poverty. 4. I think I want to understand the economic principles behind all this better. Neo-liberalism was cited as one of the main causes of global poverty but I don’t think I fully grasp how exactly that works. Understanding how the money of the globe works will help me to better understand the causes of these issues.
Overall, a short but important book. Very concise to read but may need to prepare the scale of disaster described in the book.
Incredible book. It should be required reading for everyone. I want to buy it for all my friends, but unfortunately it appears there hasn't been an English translation yet (?!).
This book intends to explain world food shortages to a child; I'm not sure it works. The structure is of a child interviewing a parent. Some facts are worth the read in terms of the juxtaposition of world crises in different geopolitical locations in a very tight frame...a good introduction to Ziegler's denser adult reads, perhaps.
Great and highly accessible introduction to the notion of poverty in the modern world (particularly the discourse on its causes - political corruptions in third world countries and hypocrisy as well as corruption driven by monetary greed of developed countries). Definitely amplified my interest in the subject.
