Aboriginals living on the islands north of Arnhem Land cohabitate with a mission group. Fascinating stories of the ways, experiences and accomplishments of the locals and mission are told with charming delight.

We hear of festivities, ceremonies, strange pets, crocodile hunting, impressive long distance communication techniques, trade, traditional food, funny stories and much more.

The tone of the book is consistently upbeat and positive, focussing on the many strengths and talents of the people on the island. There is no condescension or disrespect at any stage and certainly no coercion for participation in any of the mission’s endeavours.

I chose this book to learn more about the people in the northern lands and was not put off reading about the christian influence being an atheist myself. The religious comments were mostly made in passing and was the slightest of themes in the book.

I would recommend this book to all Australians.
