Emmanuel Guibert has written a great many graphic novels for readers young and old, among them the Sardine in Outer Space series and The Professor’s Daughter with Joann Sfar.

In 1994, a chance encounter with an American World War II veteran named Alan Cope marked the beginning of a deep friendship and the birth of a great biographical epic.

Another of Guibert's recent works is The Photographer. Showered with awards, translated around the world and soon to come from First Second books, it relates a Doctors Without Borders mission in 1980’s Afghanistan through the eyes of a great reporter, the late Didier Lefèvre.

Guibert lives in Paris with his wife and daughter.

Ariol is nominally a donkey, looks like a mosquito, but is really just a French school boy. There's no particular reason at all why the characters in this graphic novel are animals (although it's used for at least one joke, when Ariol's friend Romono, who is a pig, politely refuses a ham sandwich). I liked the book's understated humor, and the crisp detailed drawings. I started with the second volume because it was the only one on the library shelf and liked it enough that I'm requesting the first. Not sure what my son will make of it. Although I've left it casually lying around the house in visible places, he's yet to pick it up.

Edited to add:

Ariol is a hit with the boy. We are looking forward to the publication of the American edition of book 3.

My daughters and I love Ariol. As a big fan of comics, I think this series is a fantastic way to introduce my kids to the world of graphic novels. It’s light, funny, easy to read, and incredibly entertaining. What really stands out is how relatable Ariol is, a little donkey who, despite being an animal, lives a completely normal life. He lives with his parents, has friends, and faces the small adventures and challenges of everyday life. There’s no fantasy or magic here, just simple, real-life stories, and that’s exactly what fascinates me. In a world where most children’s books go in another direction, Ariol is a refreshing gem we enjoy together.

This book was different then most books it had a lot of stories it had many different types of settings and stories. When I first started to read this book it was boring I didn't really want to read this book anymore but now that I finished it, it was a really good book and I like all the characters. I recommend this book to all the comic book readers and like many different types of stories then just normal stories.

Ariol: Thunder Horse is a fun book I believe both of my children both 10 and 7 would enjoy. Its got the right level of drama without any real danger and the right amount going on to keep them entertained.

English:
Ariol is quickly becoming my favorite children’s comic. Guibert constantly delivers scripts that really feel like they depicts the reality of children, as opposed to all those stories about children, written by adults from a safe distance. In this volume, for instance, I loved the little story of how the hesitant Ariol tries hard to impress the resolute and confident girl he loves, or the one about the obsession of collecting cards that can transcend generational gaps.

Boutavant’s art is also spot on, and a far cry from the more generic art of licensed children’s comics. I’m really happy that Ariol is now being translated into Swedish, and despite not exactly being part of the target group for this children's comic, I still look forward to each new volume.

I liked Ariol #1 but I loved Ariol #2. I was laughing right from the start with the humour that hits at two levels, one for kids and one for adults. Ariol is collecting sticker packs for his Thunder Horse sticker album and is up to four packs a day but knows he has to cut back down to one pack a day. Seriously. That started me giggling and I was in the mood the whole way through. Again we have the collection of several short stories but this time the topics vary from the first time so they don't feel repetitive at all. Something I must say I was afraid might happen. There are a few school stories and some of the same friends return but other classmates we only saw in book 1 are given bigger roles in this book. New teachers are introduced which meant I missed seeing the coach from book 1. And to further develop these characters even though there is no overall plot we are introduced to Ariol's family. We met mum and dad last book, and they show up plenty here as well. Also Ariol's grandparents come aboard and Ariol shows his love and pride for his parents in two different situations when talking about them. Ariol is a cute, resourceful intelligent donkey but he also manages to get himself into unexpected trouble usually at the behest of Ramono his pig friend or because of mooning over his lady love Petula the cow. Lovely comic for the 7-11 age group the adults will enjoy the humour of as well. Looking forward to Book 3.

Compilation of comic shorts done in four-panel pages. The illustrations are cute but not thrilling. Ariol is a young little horse who has typical kid adventures. Each mini-story in this volume has subtle chuckles, most of which come right at the last second. The laughter is basically cumulatively generated. Probably would appeal to kids with a deadpan sense of humor, as the jokes kind of sneak up on you. Not bad, but the style reminds me of New Yorker cartoons, which people frequently complain about as having hidden or missed humor.

Love Ariol, but would be curious to see what kids at my library think. I am certain my love comes 80% from nostalgia- it is a very French kids comic book. Oh the frustrations of not being able to get the last sticker for your Panini album! The names and expressions on the teachers' faces- I worked with those teachers! The drawing of a school coatroom. There are so many things I wouldn't have noticed and picked up on had I not worked for a year in French Elementary schools.

Ariol is such a great comic for kids. As usual, the French lead the way in awesome bandes dessinees. The characters and dialog are funny, and more importantly, believable. The humor is wry, without being ironic; the kids talk and act like kids, not tiny stand-ins for adults. Reading it as an adult, I don't appreciate it in a "wink-wink, this humor is really for adults", I appreciate it in a "oh wow, I remember feeling like this as a kid". And the art is fabulous; playful, cute, hilarious.

I loved this graphic novel about a donkey named Ariol who goes to school with his friends, collects comic books, has a crush on a girl, etc. the art is bright and engaging and the author really catches the way kids in middle grades (3rd/4th) think, act, and talk. I plan on buying this series - I think kids will love it..

It's a cute set of stories about a donkey and his various animal friends and how they navigate through life. Some story topics include being overheard when you are saying mean things about someone, having a friend that doesn't listen and causes trouble while over at your house, daydreaming over the pretty "girl" in class, and the foibles of collecting stickers.

Great illustrations.

Maybe the series is just growing on me, but I thought volume two was a better book than the first. The humor comes from everyday situations that the average reader will find very familiar. The edge is toned way down here and I liked the characters much more.

I am LOVING Ariol. I can't believe how wonderfully humorous these short strips are. I've been recommending them to some of my older and even adult graphic novel readers because the funny nostalgic memories of just how children behave are priceless.

I want to love this series because hey, the main character is a donkey, one of the cutest animals ever, but it's not my cup of tea. However, kids that like Wimpy Kid would probably enjoy these comics of school aged animals.

I figured out part of the appeal of these graphic novels for me - the illustrations, the coloring remind me of Richard Scarry. I adored Richard Scarry as a kid.
