Skye Dunbar needs to get away from London to put a disastrous affair behind her. When she rents a cabin in Washington State’s San Juan Islands, the last thing she expects is to be accused of computer hacking. Jedediah Walker is investigating the dead marine life washed up on the islands beaches. And he has another problem – an unexpected, beautiful and suspicious new tenant renting his cabin. When Walker discovers that the fish contain a high concentration of toxic chemicals, he suspects they are being deliberately dumped in Puget Sound. Later, when someone hacks into his computer, he realises it is no coincidence and sets out to find out more about his mysterious new tenant. However, Skye doesn’t like Walker from the moment she sees him. He feels the same. But that’s about to change.
At first, I thought this would be a fun, light weight, three star book. But it just kept annoying me more and more. First, the female lead (for lack of a better description) gets inexplicably angry with the male lead because he warns he not to put her foot in icy cold water. Huh?
Then, he comes across as sensitive and a nice guy, while she seems weak and vulnerable - which is a bit hard to believe about one of the top business women in London. Throughout the story, she is recovering from some terrible, mysterious encounter with her last boyfriend, a man named Michael. For reasons she cannot explain, she goes to the area where the bad thing happened for a vacation. According to her own analysis, she has done nothing but work and sleep for a year, so for vacation she goes to an island where she can do nothing but read, take walks, sleep, and be alone. Hmmmm.....
After the two main characters figure out they like each other, there are some cliched, not great love scenes. After three (1,2,3) raptuous days together, the male gets called away, and breaks the poor woman's heart. Because, in three days, she has fallen completely in love, "mind, body, and soul". Then, the male lead seems to lose his mind. He becomes aggressive, refuses to listen, displays "evil" smiles and is generally an ass.
She saves his business, leaves the country, and he almost dies chasing some bad guys. She almost marries her best friend, then the male lead shows up in London. Even though she has been secretly wishing he would call, she is angry and tells him to believe. He behaves like an ass again, then tells her he nearly died, and she admits she loves him.
I found this a very engaging story and kept me intrigued through-out. The book took some turns that I didn't expect and I love it when books surprise me like that. I listened to the audiobook and it was very well narrated by Virginia Ferguson...she portrayed all the characters in this story and was able to change her voice and her accent for them all...American to British,Male to female and it was all a smooth transition..I enjoyed listening to Virginia's performance. This is a romance between Brit Skye and American Walker who meet while Skye is on an unexpected vacation from her job and her life. Skye had experienced a traumatic event a year ago and was still not over the event that changed her life she escapes to Seattle to recouperate. This is were she meets Walker a marine Biologist who is investigating the illegal dumping of chemical waste in the Ocean, after discovering a number of dead fish washed up on the shore. There is an immediate connection between them a spark that doesn't go away, and they embark on a passionate affair. But because of the investigation Walker is involved in,he is quite suspicious and can't find it to trust anyone...even having doubts how Skye came into his life. There is more to this story than just the romance between Skye and Walker and events happen that have them working together to bring the bad guys to justice....But things don't go to plan and it is touch and go whether their affair can go beyond a fling,or survive the mistrust and miscommunication. Although I did enjoy listening to this book by Victoria Howard I did struggle at the start for some reason but glad that I carried on listening...because the story does become more compelling..I became captivated by the mystery of story and needed to find out what would happen between Walker and Skye, especially when another man comes between them. I actually thought at one point that this story was not going to end well..I think Victoria Howard did a great job at making you wonder what would happen. A very entertaining Audiobook. Fantastic 41/2 Stars.
Three Weeks Last Spring is a beautifully written romantic suspense novel set in the San Juan Islands of Washington State. I’ve loved Ms. Howard’s book since I discovered them several years ago and was thrilled to start this audiobook.
The author paints an engaging and vivid portrait of the landscape around the islands in chilly April. She also sets up her two main characters with delightful animosity – replete with plenty of sexual tension.
I loved listening to the book, not only because of the intriguing and suspenseful storyline, but because the narrator is outstanding. Virginia Ferguson can portray a woman with a British accent and a man with an American accent with equal ease. The voices are distinct and sound genuine. I’m pretty choosy when it comes to narrators, but this one is top notch!
Skye Dunbar, the female lead, is a complex and fascinating creature. Her relationship with marine biologist Jeddediah Walker makes the story quiver with excitement and anticipation. When a major misunderstanding comes between the two, it’s painful as you wait and watch for them to finally understand each other and fall into each other’s arms! That’s the sign of a great author who knows how to tease out a plot and build dynamic characters.
Thank you, Ms. Howard and Ms. Ferguson, for a superb listen!
Highly recommended by USA Today Bestselling Author, Aaron Paul Lazar.
Skye is spending her month vacation on one of the San Juan islands, off the Washington coast. After a harrowing experience a year ago, she needs the solitude of the island to rest and recover. She does not expect to meet the rude, yet dashing, Walker...who lives in the cabin next door. Biologist Walker, is investigating the illegal dumping of waste, including PCBs, into the ocean. He has his suspicions about the timing of the arrival of his new neighbor and, after a rocky first meeting, decides to befriend her. The chemistry between them is palpable and they begin a ‘vacation’ fling. Can a relationship survive when there is distrust? Not to mention, Skye’s business partner who wants to be more than a friend. Will Walker discover who’s behind the illegal dumping and attacks on his company? The book starts off a bit slow but picks up steam after the first couple of chapters. Worth sticking with it. Love the HEA. I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
As romances go, this was absolutely fine. We have the usual mix of attraction, misunderstanding, mistrust, and conclusion. I'm not really sure I liked the main characters, though. Walker was a jerk, and Skye was too naive for the successful business woman she was meant to be. The mystery that made her so vulnerable didn't rub with me, imo, there was absolutely no reason this could have been used to blackmail her. The narration was fine, though, and the story wasn't boring at all, so I had no trouble finishing it.
I don't feel this novel compares to the other two novels I've read by this author, though. I can't really say why that is, maybe because I am older now? Anyway, I still enjoyed the book.
I enjoyed listening to this audiobook, the narration was excellent with an English accent for the main character sky. Walker was a gruff intelligent man and they made an interesting and likable couple. The story seemed to drag on at times, but I still kept listening hoping these two characters would find their happiness. I am a fan of this author's work and I have listened to a couple of her other audiobooks and enjoyed them as well.
A entertaining, romantic, with mystery. Sky Dunbar is a computer programmer from the UK a successful business woman, On a whim she decides to take a month off to San Duan Islands in Washington. While there Sky meets handsome, marine biologist Walker. Who is investigating who is poisoning the fish in the ocean of San Duan.
Audible uk:All Skye wants is to be left alone. She does not want to meet a man or get entangled in any local fish issues.Great book! Narration by Virginia Ferguson was well done.I was given this book by the narrator, author or publisher free for an honest review.
Sky Dunbar is a computer programmer from the UK a successful business woman, but in turmoil with her past relationship. Whim of the moment she decides to take a month off to San Duan Islands in Washington and deal with her past demons and hopefully move on.
Here she meets deviously handsome but aggorant Walker- a marine biologist on an investigation to hunt down and find out who is poisoning the fish in the ocean of San Duan.
First impression Walker finds Sky irritating and feisty, yet he is intrigued with her beauty. Sky finds Walker arrogant and pigheaded and quiet rude. In time events are unraveled and mystery into their lives causes a rift of differences and lies are eprehensibly placed.
A fluent read from beginning to end, filled with mystery and suspense. Plot was fast paced, but not pushed forward where you are lost half way through. Descriptions well construed. Character development I really enjoyed, the two main characters having their own personalities and whims, very realistic in real life. Their love was three days of pure electricity and sparks, lustful and loving – yet sensual and memorable. I enjoyed the witty friendship that Sky had with her best friend, refreshing and funny at times, and something that Sky needed to lighten her life. I enjoyed this character I found her cute mannerisms and honesty admirable. Sky’s business partner, long term friend , was charming and everything you could want also in a great friend and at times I sort of felt sorry for him, being in love with someone who didn’t return the feelings. He was caring , kind and a loving friend, but in turn Sky couldn’t repay his love in the way he wished for. This being very tangible in real life. The struggle Sky had with her past, I found quiet emotional and these were well portrayed throughout the read, heartfelt and realistic once again. Chapters flowed smoothly and overall a well balanced novel with everything you could want in a love suspense story, including lust, passion and sensual sexy moments. This is my first book I have read of Victoria’s and I really enjoyed it and will be looking for more of her other stories
This book is about Skye Dunbar, a computer programmer from the UK who flies to the San Juan Islands in Washington State to try to deal with the ghosts of a past relationship gone wrong. Once arriving to the San Juans, she meets Walker, a marine biologist trying to investigate the mysterious death of fish being washed ashore on the islands. Their lives and problems intertwine and intensify before resolution.
As a debut novel, the author did a great job of pulling the reader into the story. Her descriptions are vivid and the characters believable and well developed. The plot is fast paced, but not rushed.
The author switched views from Skye to Walker without warning. One paragraph was written from Skye's perspective, the next from Walkers without any break. Also, the plot is predictable.
Overall, I enjoyed this book. I recommend it for a rainy day sitting by the fire.
I thought this book was pretty good. The plot was really great, and quite intriguing, and the love story is very believable. However, i am not sure how healthy the relationship is between Skye and Walker (I mean, he did angrily hold her captive in a cabin for 3 days, that can't be normal) but for some reason you still hope that in the end they will end up together as you read along. I found the different British colloquialisms interesting, although I did snicker a few times when some of the American characters said something decidedly British, but all that is rather minor. All in all, this was a good book, and it was well written.
I tried to read it... there was just too much unnecessary description and I didn't really like the characters. I don't really care what Skye contemplated eating for breakfast or how she spent her afternoon, especially if she does mundane things. I didn't feel like spending time reading this when I have plenty of other books on my shelf.
Well, I made it to page 215 but just couldn't finish it. I did not like Skye AT ALL! For a 34 year old woman, she acted like a teenager and just irritated the crap out of me. And John calling her 'sweet pea' every time he spoke was more than I could bear. I flipped through the last 100 pages just to see how it predictably ended.
I absolutely loved this book, if this is a first book I can't wait for the next. The characters were well defined and believable, I read the book in two days, it would have been sooner but I had other commitments. Congratulations to Victoria Howard.
I had a hard time liking the main characters in this book and didn't find myself hoping for their happy ending. I kept reading because I don't like to quit in the middle of a book.
