2am is Dead Hour, when the vast stretch of motorway is quiet; deserted apart from the body of a teenage girl, sprawled across the fast lane... Caz is determined to find the driver who killed her sister, and discovers Rose was involved in a dubious social networking site; LiveWire. The site is for thrill seeking teenagers and encourages them to participate in death defying activities and post photos and results.
Caz soon realises the only way to reveal Rose's killer, and take the revenge she craves, is to participate in the game that killed her sister. And win.

Sadly, I have very few positive things to say about this book. As my grandmother always told me if you don’t have anything nice to say don’t say anything at all. And then follow it up with a post for the entire internet to read.

I admit that I’m not the audience for this book. This book targets young adults and it has been many years since I have been considered a young adult. I couldn’t even tell you the last year I was carded. I didn’t seek out this book but it was given to me and I felt that it should be given a fair chance.

I hated this book from the start. They say not to judge a book by its cover, but they never read the cover to this book. The back cover includes a brief synopsis which is littered with problems that should be a dire warning to anybody who dares read this book. There’s a picture of 5 people on the back cover, but even after finishing the book I have no idea how this relates to the story. Maybe they are supposed to be the main characters, but I don’t recall the scene in the book. Since it’s just five people sitting and standing around it’s pretty accurate for what lays inside: a plot that has all the excitement of 5 people standing around.

The synopsis has the names of every character CAPITALIZED for no reason that I can fathom. Clearly this is intended to warn the prospective reader that the characters do things for no understandable reason. While I make no claim to be a scholar of English and grammar I counted 4 such mistakes just in the synopsis. Again, dear reader, this is a warning. The best that can be said for the synopsis is it gives away about 90% of the core plot points and the last 10% is rather self-evident to anybody who’s watched more than 8 Law & Order episodes. Since the majority of the plot is pre-spoiled by the time you get to page 1, I promise not to give away anything that isn’t on the back cover.

If you look at the front cover it has the title ROADKILL in all red capital letters. The fact that the book is named for something dead and disgusting that nobody should touch without gloves is again a perfect warning for what lays inside.

The writing in the book is terribly clichéd and overloaded with metaphors, like a jelly sandwich left on the ground during a picnic. The author is trying to impress us with her writing style, like a little kid constantly saying “look at me and my awesome metaphors.” As if this wasn’t bad enough the writing is randomly littered with parentheticals, like area around a smoker filled with used butts, when it was clear the editor (if such a person existed) didn’t know how to make the sentence work without such a device (you see what I mean?). Would you be surprised to see one of these parentheticals in the synopsis (you shouldn’t be)?

Since the book is writing in the first person narrative at first I wondered if the grammatical mistakes, poorly defined motivation, and cardboard cutout characters were some kind of bad stylistic choice in an attempt to portray the protagonist as having impaired cognitive function. Sadly I came to a different conclusion: the author lacks the necessary skill to effectively write these thin characters. This becomes evident when events within the story’s timeline are referenced rather than portrayed. Instead of showing us firsthand some of the character interactions that could serve to give depth and motivation to the characters we just hear vague references. Maybe this is the author’s way of trying to spare us more banal dialog and we should just be grateful, like not looking a gift horse in the mouth (I promise to stop now).

Even the attempts to build tension are total and utter failures. There’s a scene, surprisingly not referenced in the brief synopsis, at about the half-way point where the protagonist is in mortal danger. The only problem is since the book is written in first person and with half the book to go it should come as no surprise she survives largely unscathed.

Ultimately this book is like a big mac. You see an okay picture in the adverts but when you open the box you see something that doesn’t really resemble anything healthy, tasty or even safe for human consumption. Ignoring your better judgment you eat it anyway and the experience would be totally forgettable except for how bad it is. It’s nothing special and is about as creative as a burger introduced in 1968. As if that wasn’t bad enough it causes you all kinds of stomach problems until you purge it from your system which makes you feel better, but you’re worse for the experience and wish it had never happened.

Its 2 AM & there is a body alongside the very busy highway.
Caz (Caroline) truly morns the death of her sister Rose (19). She is not sure whether Rose (aka Farlan) was murdered, maybe suicide or other things caused her death.

What is the LiveWire all about?
Are Leo Betts & Ash dealing drugs?
Will Caz figure out the mystery of her sister’s death?

Beware Mark Zuckerberg.

I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review. Only an honest one.

A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written mystery book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great mystery movie, or mini TV series. 1 book you must read to the end. A very easy rating of 5 stars.

Thank you for the free Story Cartel; PDF book

Disclaimer: I received a free copy in exchange of an honest review of the book.

The book was an okay, that is all I would say. Nothing that would spark the attention of the reader. I mean I started reading it, and then I conveniently forgot about it for a week and then saw it on my desktop and started reading it.

So you see, the book wasn't anything that could hold my attention for long.

I would say do not waste time reading this book as it is not as interesting as it could have been.
