Powerful and prophetic. One of the best books that I’ve read in a long time because of Maggay’s critical perspective of ideology and dogma, her right-sized and placed hope in and for the Kingdom of God. A must-read, particularly in these days. I finished it feeling charged and hopeful!
This little book is beautifully subversive. Melba Padilla Maggay is thoughtful, insightful, and engaging as she unfolds a practical theology of the church in relation to society. She would argue it is not a theology at all, and that she is not a theologian. However, her experiences and faithfulness have earned her the floor and she ought to be heard!
This book made me pause and think on every page. It's one of the best missiological texts I've ever read.
"A breach has been made, the powers of the new world are breaking in. So let us not be daunted. ... The world will falter and break around us. It cannot be helped. But let us have an eye for the mustard seed, for the signs of the new age." ❤
I had to pause between chapters to really digest this book and let its insights on the church's role in society against all kinds of evil (including political structures) pour over me. It is my companion in that there is a sense that injustices should be confronted while remaining in radical hope.

Transforming Society is one of my favorite internship books. Dr. Melba Padilla Maggay reflects on both her experience as part of the Peoples' Revolution against the Marcos Regime in the Philippines and how the people of God are to interact with the powers that be.
This is a must-read for anyone entering into ministry among the poor because it addresses the big-picture systemic issues that factor into and perpetuate poverty. My favorite chapters were 12 & 13 - 'practicing radical pessimism' (taking evil seriously) and 'practicing radical hope.'
