Very informative book with a lot of interesting information. It summaries the inventor and the description of each invention. The way the invention was created can be described in more detail and is often confusing. I would recommend this book to others who want to understand how the machines and tools used today were created. I have almost completed the book
Haven covers 100 Greatest Science Discoveries, including some within mathematics. Every discovery is 2-3 pages long, with a definition and the scientist(s) attributed to it, a brief blurb on it, and a few paragraphs of background info. Each "chapter" ends with a fun fact (that is sometimes a bit random) and additional resources. Despite the typos and some grammar mistakes (seriously, was there an editor???), I love it.
Some of the scientists are crazy! Quite a few discoveries came about because the possibility of chaos/disorder was just. not. acceptable. Also, the malleability (if that's the word I'm looking for) of mercury is far more important than I've ever realized.
~ Andreas Vesaius, in order to learn more about human anatomy, would go through graveyards and Paris' mound of Monfaucon to get his hands on fresh bodies.
~I learned how barometers work! If I had learned as a child, I had forgotten.
~ Robert Hooke, who had discovered the existence of cells, was a person we can all learn from. His motto, since he was a child, was "I can do that." And everything he attempted, he did.
~ Fun Facts: Cell biology is the only science in which multiplication means the same thing as division. (P 22) (TBF, division is multiplying by the reciprocal. Silly Haven).
~ Spinach is being used as a power source (as an alternate to electricity)?!!?! That is awesome, no wonder why it's so good to eat. Also, I didn't realize Franklin also discovered the effect ocean currents have on climate. What a brilliant man.
~ Humphry Davy, who discovered anesthesia and electrochemical bonding had a few screws loose. 'Hm, I wonder what this mixture of gasses does. I think I'm going to sniff them.' *passes out* Seriously, what the heck?! He almost killed himself with carbon dioxide poisoning. What needs to get the job done, right?
~ I didn't realize the Southern hemisphere also have electromagnetic lights, called 'southern lights' or the aurora australis. That is so cool!
~ I also didn't know that dinosaurs were unknown until 1824. That wasn't all that long ago!
~ The word "chromosomes" means 'colored bodies' in Greek. Its singular is "chromatin," which is what Walther Flemming called colored threadlike objects he was finally able to see with a new dye that didn't kill the cells scientists were trying to study.
~ Hah, the X in X-ray isn't short for anything! Just like in algebra, Wilhelm Roentgen threw an 'x' there to represent an unknown.
~ It is CRAZY that cows have over 800 possible blood types! Humans (and cats) are easy.
~ I didn't realize that Marie Curie's notebooks were even radioactive....and for many years after her death!
~ The awareness of vitamins is just over 100 years old (1906). That boggles my mind.
~ Haven explains isotopes well. He really does. I understand a smidge more than I used to...but I just can't grasp the eccentricities of them. Haven says in the last sentence of the discovery on page 134: "But an understanding of neutrons was needed in order to fully understand them." Well. That explains why I don't.
~ The knowledge of the continental drift is just cool to read. So was the info on expanding galaxies. I understand more!
~ Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle (and his own insecurity about not knowing everything) is, to me, reasoning that God and science aren't separate but one. Science can't explain everything, but any type of theism can. I freaking LOVE it!
~ The cell structure was only known in 1933?? And knowledge on the Ecosystem was ONLY 1935?!!?! AND SERIOUSLY DINOSAURS?! TRUE INFO WASN'T DISCOVERED UNTIL 1976?!?!?!?!?!?!?!! Bakker wasn't even taken seriously for almost 20 years. That is ridiculous. Science makes me feel young. We haven't known many things for a long time - a lot is within the past 100 years.
~ Like the fact that planets exist around other stars. I understand that since planets don't emit light it's difficult to see them, but my mind is still boggled.
A scientific book , yet narratively scripted in an anecdotal way about the most amazingly world changing discoveries over the course of recorded human history. It massively depicts the human endeavor, potentials as well as persistence that have absolutely no boundaries!...
I loved the book. All is structured properly and easy to comprehend, facts are enhanced with personal stories of the scientists. I will definitely read if for several times. Also, huge bibliography is included with interesting science books about each discovery.
100 Greatest Science Discoveries is an enjoyable and pleasant read. The discoveries are presented in a time line and leads us through a lovely history and light overview. It is great for short bios with snippets for classroom use. The sequential presentation makes it clear how everything we are technologically is based on the great scientists of our past. Accessible to the novice and beginning enthusiasts of any grade through adulthood. I was continually impressed at how failures led to success and advancement over the centuries. Published by Scholastic. A fun overview of the history of science and why each step was important.

Read 2 or 3 pages & you've read about one of the 100 Greatest Science Discoveries of All Times. OK, it could be better but the list is rationale, defended, and almost presented well.
