J.R. Rain is the author of 110 novels and counting. He lives on an island in the Pacific Northwest, where he's hard at work on his next novel... and fighting off sparkly vampires.
I love the blending of vampire lore with a modern noir-style tone. This is engaging and fast-paced with a heavy, brooding atmosphere. The author is amazing at maintaining tension and keeping you hooked
But (and this is mainly my fault for not reading the rest of the Samantha Moon series), I never felt like I knew Samantha. She was just sort of... there. It's still a great entry point for the larger series and I'll be picking up the rest soon
Only read this book if you have Kindle Unlimited. Only one story is a Samantha Moon short, and is why I gave an extra star. The book also ends at 50%...loc 409 of 816. The 3 stories all have a "death" theme. So, if you have KU, spend the 15 minutes it takes to read, if not..skip this book.
This was an interesting little Story! The first story was regarding further adventures of Samantha's Moon. The rest of the book had nothing to do with her.
3.5 stars---Samantha Moon is a mother, an agent and a vampire, but not a vampire by choice. Over the previous several days, Samantha is besieged with a nightmare showing a young human woman obliterated by a city bus. Usually nightmares and dreams are just that, but Samantha has a gift of ESP, and she believes she is actually seeing the future. Although nothing about the woman is familiar, she will soon discover the place and time will be closer than she thought.
Samantha would soon recognize a young woman sitting on a bench waiting for a bus. Hoping to stop a disaster from happening, Samantha tries in vain to ‘push’ the young woman into moving. Thinking Samantha is crazy lady, the potential victim of the accident blows Sam off. When the nightmare never occurs, Sam will soon realize she is at the wrong stop. Hoping to save the other woman, Sam takes off but knows she will never make it on time. But no sooner is she heading to the other stop, does something strange and overwhelming happen-she finds herself flying to her destination and has no idea what has happened.
VAMPIRE DREAMS is a very short story, approximately 19 pages, in J.R.Rain’s Samantha Moon series. Although it is an intriguing novella released on September 17, 2012. In June 2012 the author released SAMANTHA MOON: THE FIRST FOUR VAMPIRE FOR HIRE NOVELS anthology which includes Vampire Dreams. If you are interested, I would suggest this anthology as it includes the first 4 Samantha Moon novels and a couple of short stories.
3 Stars – Vampire Dreams is an urban fantasy by J.R. Rain and a short story in his Vampire for Hire series.
Normally, Samantha Moon doesn’t dream. Normally, she closes her eyes and sinks into an eternal darkness, and doesn’t awake until the persistent blaring of her alarm clock pulls her out of whatever black chasm she’s descended into. But for the past three days, she’s dreamt the same dream. Over and over. So when it suddenly appears that her dream is coming to fruition, Sam is left wondering how do you walk up to a complete stranger and tell them you’ve been dreaming of their death?
A well written, super short story (glad it was a freebie), Vampire Dreams is another entertaining Samantha Moon read!
This was a really short story, which is probably my favorite type. I already know the main character (Samantha Moon), and I’m very familiar with her world. In this story she keeps having the same prophetic dream. In this dream, a girl dies. As per usual, Sam has to try to save someone that probably doesn’t even want to be saved. This winds up getting her in all sorts of trouble, but it was still pretty enjoyable.
When will I learn not to buy compilations of short stories? First, the short story about Samantha Moon (the entire reason I purchased the compilation) was good. Liked it. The other two by Rain? Not so much. They were okay, just not of interest to me. And while I enjoyed re-reading the classic The Raven and The Monkey's Paw, I purchased the book to read Rain's writing, not Poe's or Jacobs'. So, quick July 4th read. Enjoyable, but nothing special.
Glad I did not purchase this book and read it for free. The short story was only about 10 pages and the rest of the book were more extremely short stories.
Even more so the short story I wanted had no depth to the story. Samantha had a dream and prevented it from happening that was it no development into the characters in the series. As far as I am concerned it does not need to be listed as part of the series.
This anthology is very difficult to rate as gothic classics that are given as a bonus outshine greatly the main offering of JR Rain's stories. While Samantha Moon's story is short, dramatic and entertaining, the two other new stories are really nothing to say good about, not scary enough, not funny enough, a bit embarrassing.
Even though it's a short its as usual Awesone! Love Samantha Moon. Her character grows more and more with every book. If you liked the short you've got to read the Samantha Moon Series.
