GLYNN JAMES is an author of science fiction, post-apocalyptic, dark fantasy, horror, and dystopian fiction. His love of science fiction began when he was eight years old after discovering HP Lovecraft and Richard Matheson, and then later on Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman, James Herbert, Clive Barker, and Stephen King.
In addition to being author of the “ALTERLIGHT” supernatural mystery thriller series, he is author of the dark sci-fi series "DIARY OF THE DISPLACED", the post-apocalyptic "THROWN AWAY" series, and co-author of the "ARISEN" series and the “DUSTFALL” series.
I can't believe I spent such a large portion of my life obsessed with The Walking Dead only to discover this in 2019. This has been the best book in the series so far - with characters not only realistically equipped to deal with the Zulu Alpha or Zombie Apocalypse, but so relatable despite being well trained Marines, Seals and Troops of all countries.
The last hour of the audio book had me gripping my seat in such dread for their lives, because you know that Hamden will do what it takes to keep his team going to take the possible vaccine back to Fortress Britain and that Ally and Homer will leave each other behind if bitten, despite their burning love for each other.
The addition of Sarah is just fantastic. So far she's the only capable civilian they've encountered - resourceful and with the right amount of love for her fellow man to do whatever it takes not only to save the last pockets of civilisation, but anyone that needs help.
Three Parts Dead ups the ante and suspense as the group battles for each and every hour of survival - the undead hordes are unrelenting. One of the more humorous characters equates the mayhem and nonstop fight for survival to having "box seats to an opera of fatal errors." Listening to the despair and hopelessness in their voices was palpable - after all they are fighting a war with no end in sight... R.C. Bray is amazing. . . his delivery is perfection and often has me laughing out loud when I hear one liners such as this one because they seemingly come out of thin air - and those are the best kind! Remarkable.
I love zombie apocalypse fiction, and this series is first rate. The characters are unique and distinct (and likeable), the action gripping, and the suspense riveting.
The cheesy lines and repetitious (and unnecessary) parenthetical explanations are really starting to wear on me. The story is intriguing enough to read on, I suppose, but the lack of characterization is also grating.
Zombie apocalypse, or better said one version of how the humanity could handle it.
For me, the series started a bit on the boring side, but the books are quite short so I can commit to the whole series. I like the genre in general so I want to give it a chance
The good news is that I think this book (the third in the series) is better than the first two, at least for me it was much more interesting. Including the survivalist character other than the special forces super hero type made it better... just give me a Robert Neville (I Am Legend) clone and I am good :-)
The series has 12 books atm, so four stars for this one, and let's see how it continues...
I wasn’t very impressed by this last volume. Of course it ended with the one character I really liked leaving the group. The seal goes off with a new woman he just met to find her family and kill them. Then they will continue on to find his family.

Another great addition to this series. Again following several different groups, which was interesting as we see them battling in different areas/different circumstances. The military meeting survivors is a different slant as well, and I feel I get to know the individual characters more as this series progresses.
This was a necessary installment, but it also falls in the "second act" of the five or six book series. By that, I mean that it's that weird middle-place at the party, not the beginning anymore but not quite 1 o'clock a.m. where shit gets nuts; it's like 10:30 p.m.: where people are still showing up from work, some people are drunk already, some aren't, and it's like, where is this party going? What will happen after midnight? Is this worth staying at?
There was not as much action in #3 as the first two books, and honestly, there was a bit too much time spent on character building -- some of which, during the cabin chapters especially, wasn't needed as a smart person could infer most of it.
This installment also suffered from adjective and description depletion. That well is dry, buddy. Thanks to the strengths of the previous two books, I felt this book began to recycle and drag on descriptions of blood, guts, and general atmosphere. By this point in the series, we get it. We know how black the mucus is, how rubbery the sinew twists from the sockets, and how wet the gnawing creature's jaws gnashed after lumbering blah blah blah.... etc, etc....
The "zombie" crap is so well established in modern video games, pop culture in general, and of course, the first two "ARISEN" books, that I found myself skimming descriptions of hordes. By this point in the series, books should only be getting longer if there are some big twists. Even new characters, like Sarah, shouldn't have so much time dallying about wasting fifty pages when only 30 are needed. It's picky, yeah, but it's my review and my opinion.
If those bigger plot elements aren't happening, books 3 or 4 of 6 book series (in my opinion) are allowed to be shorter and perfectly fine stepping stones. "Three Parts Dead" is longer than the first and second books and for no real reason. Neither big enough reveals or interesting enough characters came for me in this book. Just a lot of convenient bopping around between set-peices to set-up stuff for book four. Yes, one or two new things are discovered, but not big enough things. It seemed like book #3 could have been edited down greatly and been the first seventy-five pages of book four. I'll bet #3 and #4 could have been one book.
I expect the next book to pick back up, and books five and six to be bat-shit bonkers.
Each book tells the continuing saga of a world upside down where everything has changed due to an infection that turns 7 billion people into raving, human hungry zombies. This goes well beyond the Walking Dead for action as Fortress Britain, the only country left standing, is trying to reset the world to being zombie free.
The missions are many and the action is hot as American and British military conduct missions across the globe trying to find materials and people in a race to stop the extinction of the human race.
There are many characters in this saga and yet the author develops them with depth and reality. The protagonists and the antagonists seem to be so real, as does the action. Reading this saga pulls you in and places you in the middle of the action.
This HAS to be one of the BEST Zombie saga's going !!! Detail, information and realism pervades throughout the 12 books (books 13 & 14 will arrive) and I can't wait !
Once again a good no brain'er to listen on audio-book while commuting. The story kept me intrigued and its pace is a wild roller coaster ride. Only one gripe is that I have now finished book 3 and still not much has been resolved along the whole plot. Books 1 to 3 could really have just been one volume as they are so short. Will be listening to the next few to see if it keeps me hooked.
Slower and less exciting book. This is the calm before the storm!
Ultimately, this book didn’t hit right for me even the second time around. I just don’t like the insta lust storyline. I wish it would’ve been done differently. So many better and less cringy options. Oh well, I knew it was coming, but I was really hoping it’d be less painful this time around…I was determined to not dislike them! But. Yeah, no they still annoyed me.
Also, how can the man talk about humanity and compassion in one breath then not hide the fact that he wants to get in her pants in the next. Her husband and kid are right fucking there! Compassion my ass lol go take a dip in Lake Michigan ma’ ‘man. That’ll cool ya’ right off! Also woman..just fucking leave if you’re so miserable. Let the zombies fucking eat them 🤷♀️ problem solved!
Alpha Team headed out towards Chicago, North America on the US navy’s nuclear powered aircraft carrier: the mission is to secure any research and samples related to a potential cure. Failing that the next best thing would be to get a lead on somewhere else to search. After pouring over mission details it’s decided that they’re going to parachute in to land on the building they need in downtown Chicago.
Their supply plane will take them to Chicago, then go back to refuel and turning around immediately to pick them back up from a small airport on an island in the middle of the Chicago River. Being amongst the last trained and existing spec ops teams in the world Alpha Team know better than to think it’s a straightforward task. It won’t be.
This series is like a Zombie opera. Alot of action, very questionable decisions, clichés and forehead slapping moments galore but hey it's free entertainment.
I've lost track of how many 'dick sandwiches' and 'badass' lines have cropped up now. There are a few cringeworthy/eyeroll writing parts but overall it still has entertainment value.
Best enjoyed with your brain switched off for the best part.
If facing your own mortality in a ZA, if you think about life too long, death certainly awaits you. In the midst of impossible odds, the commandos have lost a couple, they are battered and bruised, but not defeated. Could anyone do what Sarah does for her husband and son? A question I hope to never be presented to either of us.
A great book and the series getting better in each book.
Wow, I really enjoyed this installment, definitely my favorite in the series so far. Book one was great. Book two was pretty good and so is the prequel, but this one was non-stop action, suspense, terror, and meaningful human connection. Great characters, plot, and tension. I will definitely be continuing on to the next one, and I'm pleasantly looking forward to continuing on with the story. This series is headed somewhere and I want it to take me along for the ride.
The team, on lake Michigan, are rescued by a survivalist and continue their mission, to get the scientist they found in Chicago and his vaccine data to safety.
What a series, only on book 3 and hooked big time. One of the best apocalyptic series I have read. Reading this during the pandemic seems a little apt.
