But when your parents are dead and the government directs your path in life, sleep shouldn’t come easily. Lately, Tessa’s fitful nights are growing even more predictable, almost like déjà vu. And she’s beginning to think that something greater is at work—something her society has taken drastic measures to keep hidden.
Caught between self-discovery and government conformity, she’ll have to choose either the boy who can help her reveal this new truth or the one that can provide her with the security of familiarity.
Tessa’s faced with a weighty decision. And she’s going to need more than a good night’s sleep to make it.
You can always count me in for a good love triangle and this book definitely had it. This is a quick, easy read. I finished it in just a couple days as I was so eager to find out what happened next! I love the author's writing style with just enough description while the story still flows. Loved the book and I'm totally team Joel!!!
When I started this book I thought I knew exactly what I was getting. When I found myself half-way through the book and realized that I was getting something different, I should have been upset…or just plain confused. But I wasn’t. What I had believed to be the main plot had been pushed slightly into the background in favor of character and relationship development. And the technique worked. By the time I got to the mystery of Tessa’s world and her strange connection with time, I was so connected to the characters that I really cared about what would happen to them next.
I enjoyed the character interactions and Tessa’s road to discover her abilities. The premise of this story was quite unique. Now, I must forewarn you…there is a love triangle here. And, you know that I love to hate them. In this case it’s fairly well done. Tessa finds herself torn between Joel, her cousin’s best friend, and Liam, the new boy in town. The difficulty is that not only must she decide between them but she’s linked to both in different ways…one knows her secrets, the other has the life she ‘s always imagined living and wants to share it with her. Liam is a mystery in this book. We don’t know enough about him and, of course, that means I was attracted to his character immediately! I’m very interested to see who Tessa will ultimately end up with.
We’ve only scratched the surface on Tessa’s abilities and the secrets behind them. Her ability to see patterns in time is a very different concept than anything I’ve read recently. There is a lot of story yet to be told here and I’m glad that the next book will be out soon! With all of the unresolved issues and the relationships yet to be determined, I’m looking forward to the next book!
I absolutely loved this book. It is not your typical dystopian novel. There isn’t all the blood, gore and violence, yet there is still a suspenseful element to it. Tessa harbors a secret – one she doesn’t even know about. It is so fun to discover this secret with her, and the mystery behind it keeps you turning the pages quickly. But, honestly, it was the love triangle that intrigued me the most. I know that anyone who follows my blog isn’t shocked by this statement at all. I adore a good love story.
In Traced, Tessa is torn between two different boys – Joel and Liam. And the truth is that I was torn too. In one moment I would be totally team Joel and a few pages later I’d be swooning over Liam. The problem is that there’s no obvious choice. They are both really great guys and super good-looking (at least in my head). I do think if I had to choose though I’d be team Joel. Of course I have no idea who Tessa picks. I guess I will just have to read Recruited:Part 2 coming out in the Spring of 2013.
I'm a dude, but yes I read this book and gotta say I loved it. It's one of those well written books where the pages just flow, very impressive for being the authors first book. Looking forward to seeing how the characters develop in the rest of the series.
One of the criteria I use for rating books is whether or not I care what happens to the characters after I finish reading. I finished this book last night and have spent the morning wondering what could happen next, hence the 5 stars. Great job, Megan Squires! I can't wait for the sequel.
i think i finished this within a few hours ... i could not put it down. great book. great plot. great job megan. i don't want to go out on a limb but i will say it ... i enjoyed it as much as hunger games :)
Loved this book! The characters were so interesting and likable. So many great scenes and it was difficult to put the book down. Can't wait to see what happens in the next book.
I hadn't heard of TRACED before I signed up for the Kismet's tour. There are so many YA dystopian books out there right now that this one got lost in the crowd for me. I'm pleased to have discovered it, though, because TRACED is the beginning of a promising new series. It's not a perfect book but Megan Squires has created an interesting world that I'd like to explore more.
Let's start off with the good stuff. I really dig the setting. It's a near-future America where democracy has been replaced by the Hub and its Sectors. Children grow up knowing that they'll be chosen by a Sector when they turn eighteen. They don't really have aspirations because the Sector that picks them is supposed to be the perfect fit. People also don't have real choices: those who choose not to accept the Sector that picks them and instead choose their own path are Discarded, socially frowned upon outliers that don't belong in this highly structured world. TRACED is the first book in a proposed trilogy exploring what it means to be an outlier in this regimented world.
The protagonist of TRACED, Tessa, a high school junior with no major aspirations. She'll go with whichever Sector she gets placed in. She hasn't really been engaging with life since her parents died two years ago and she's fine with continuing to coast through life. She does what she's supposed to and that's okay. But things start to change as she learns more about her dad's past and wanting things for herself. It's dangerous to speak out against the Hub but Tessa goes from fearing the Hub to embracing herself, which is a neat journey. The title of the novel comes from an ability that Tessa discovers she has: the ability to "trace" events. I won't talk too much about it so that you can learn what it means along with Tessa but it's an interesting power with lots of potential ramifications. It made me wonder what other special abilities might be present in the population.
TRACED also contains a love triangle. Tessa is torn between two boys: Joel, her cousin's best friend and star of their high school, and Liam, the new kid in town whose family just bought Tessa's family's ranch. I know there are a lot of folks out there who don't care for love triangles, and I don't like them if they're poorly executed or there needlessly, but the Joel-Tessa-Liam one is really effective and well written. You can see why Tessa is drawn to both of them and why they both like her and I'm honestly not sure who I'd rather see her with. I have a slight preference for Liam but it could change. I was 100% Team Gale when I read THE HUNGER GAMES but I really didn't like him by the time I was through with MOCKINGJAY, for example. I hope future books will show us more of what these guys are made of, and I'm really looking forward to that.
The negative: TRACED reads very much like Part One and didn't feel like a complete story to me. There are so many threads left dangling and a pivotal event is introduced in the last few chapters. I really wasn't thrilled with how things ended. I got to the "About the Author" page and thought, "Seriously? That's where it's stopping?" I can only assume it was logical from the author's point of view but I don't feel like TRACED offered a complete story arc. We got most of the way through and then we got a little bump towards the next story without giving me the strong final ending I was looking for.
Overall, though, I liked TRACED. It lays a solid foundation for what could be a great near-future YA dystopian series. I look forward to seeing what happens to Tessa next in RECRUITED.
Traced was really a great discovery! You know how much I love dystophians, and this one clearly hasn't failed my expectations. One of the best aspect of the book was the veil of mystery that surrounded the Hub, the oppressive government, of which the author gives some hints only once in a while; infact, even if it was clear that the government influenced (even better, forced) 18 years old teens, in choosing their future career, there were not many informations about how the Hub was organised and the history of how it came to be in power, something that I really hope will be better explained in book two. Nevertheless, I like the tension and the secrecy, the fear which was always present when talking about the Hub: a terrible government is something every good dystopian must have! I also loved the originality of the all setting and especially, the importance the author gave to time. I really think that Tessa's "disease" is unique and absolutely fascinating and the suspense created by the author during all the book, until the discovery of her secret, will keep you reading even when your eyes will beg you to stop. It was really interesting to see how Tessa's problems were related also to her father's story, and I thought it was such a wise choice to create this father-daughter bound that will connect the two characters, even if one of them is dead. Something that I would like to know more about is the origins of this kind of disease (I really can't tell you what it is, don't want to do spoiler!), how it was used in time of war, and how it spread. Another important aspect of the book was the love triangle among Tessa, Joel and Liam, even if you know I'm not a huge fan of love triangles.( I'm personally Team Liam!) Usually, I'm always more attached to one of the two, and as a consequence I start to hate the other, because it's like he's "in the middle", but this time I couldn't let myself hate neither of them, they were both so cute! Liam, with his blond curls and that sense of "Man of the House" and Joel, the handsome football player, that is just a normal, sweet guy who has to bear the pressure of everyone's expectations.Sincerely, sometimes I really couldn't understand Tessa's behaviour, she didn't want to hurt neither of them but then she did so, caring only about her desires and instincts and not about the consequences of her actions. Probably this was the only aspect of her personality I didn't appreciated, but for the rest I loved how shy and calm she was, even if she was very emotional, just like any other normal teenager.
Wow, Squires created such a different world for Traced and I was delighted to live inside of it for the few days it took me to finish. Yes, this is a dystopian book but resembles our world in the very beginning. How Tessa describes her world at first is just like ours, it takes a while for you to realize this is different. That there has been a war that created a powerful and controlling Hub, that there are sectors that have been placed by the government that chooses their future and Tess is different in a way that the Hub would not approve.
This first book is Tess realizing that she is not the normal 16/17 year old. Things are happening that can’t be explained until she reveals her secret to Joel. With Joel’s help, Tess is able to understand her secret better and finally has someone to confide in. However, a new student, Liam, is thrown into the mix giving Tess a sense of familiarity and she is torn between the two guys.
I’m going to be honest and say that it took a little while for me to get into the book in the beginning but soon I hit my stride and could not put the book down. I am eager for this Spring so that I can continue this journey with Tess and find out who she ultimately chooses. BTW, I am team Joel.
Once you read Traced, please leave a comment and tell me how you liked it. More importantly, tell me if you are team Joel or team Liam. I won’t judge! ~BookWhisperer Reviewer MC~
Just finished the first book in the Outlier Chronicles. I am currently on a "dystopian" kick and had heard good things about this book.....and I loved it! I really appreciated the character development that is sometimes missing in other books of this type. I also enjoyed that the "cast of characters" was small.
Tessa, the main character, is a little wishy-washy with her love life, but I would say that is probably true of many 17 year olds. It is probably best that she is not yet sure of herself - but the ending of this first book gives hope that she is coming into her own.
I have already downloaded the second book in the series!
Tessa's parents die in a plane crash and she goes to live with her Aunt and Uncle, and the farm she once lived in with her parents has to be sold. After two years of feeling alone; close to her 17th birthday, things begin to change for Tessa. She discovers a secret about herself and gains the friendship of two boys, Joel and Liam.
It's a fast paced, well written book with new surprises around every corner. Can't wait for the next book to come out to find out what she does with her secret and who wins her love!
The characters in this story are incredibly well developed- and the writing is so strong. I was pulled into this book immediately. I loved the touch of mystery- the way the Hub was explained and pulled in, and Tessa and Joel's discovery. I am also a sucker for teenage relationships. This took me right back to my teenage years and I felt like I was experiencing everything with Tessa- the excitement, embarrassment, and rush. I highly recommend this book!
I honestly wasn't all that impressed by this book...trying to keep in mind that this is a book for young adults it didn't live up to my expectations (thinking Hunger Games). I just didn't quite understand the whole "tracing" thing and how it could be used for the "hub". I'll probably read the next book in the series just to see if it becomes clearer.
Such a great read and I can't wait for the next book to come out! It was suspenseful, exciting, unique with a great love triangle too. I loved the characters and the storyline. So impressed with this 1st time author's book!
Loved this book! Couldn't put it down. I'm always in for a good love triangle, but more than that, I was hooked with the plot twists! So, so good. I also loved that even though it's a dystopian story line, I could believe the plot a possibility. Super intriguing. Can't wait for part 2!
I loved reading this book. The way I judge a book is how fast I read it. If I can't put it down, then it's a keeper. I read this book in 2 settings. I can't wait to read the next in the series and go deeper into each life.
First this book is beautifully written. The author has a real talent for words. However it was a bit anticlimatic which may be because it was this is the first of the series.

I would imagine that, as a writer, the hardest thing must be to come up with a unique premise. Well, okay, there are probably several hardest things about being a writer. The point is, though, that when your genre is insanely popular--as Dystopians these days--it's hard to make your own stand out. As a reader, I'm at the point where I'm pretty much over totalitarian government Dystopias and this, I think is one of the main places where Traced and I had our greatest problem.
As I see it, Traced had four main issues: One, there was too much telling and not enough showing. Several times I had to remind myself that there were stakes involved. Megan Squires told us that The Hub (Traced's totalitarian government) controlled everything--in fact, there are several conversations about it--but I never felt that she showed it to us. It's difficult to generate fear of a government based solely on character say-so. More crucially, however, there's little-to-no information about why the Dystopia came about. Writers of Dystopians often overlook this and thereby drive me nuts.
Two: The love triangle sucks. Besides feeling that they entirely too dichotomous,I couldn't muster up much enthusiasm about either of the boys vying for Tess' affections. I knew that I definitely hated one of them after he backhanded a chicken across a chicken coup. Not cool. I don't care if the hen hurt the heroine--it's an effing chicken. You do not smack them across rooms. End. Of. Story. Tess' indecision between the two boys did not add up to a compelling dilemma. On the contrary, they made me dislike her intensely. Tess' lack of honesty with herself, with her family and with the two boys was, frankly, detestable. So, I guess issue 2 1/2 is: I hated the main character.
Three: It's not believable. A government that bans watches? Um...yeah, you're going to have to convince me real hard on that one. First you'd have to make me believe that a totalitarian government would do such a thing and then you're going to have to convince me that they'd be able to enforce it. And your argument better be pretty darn convincing.
Four: I've finished the book and I still don't get what tracing is. Or how Joel (one of the love interests) is able to figure out that it's going on with Tess based on a vague childhood memory. Or how she's supposed to understand her "gift." Or use it. Or possibly interpret it. Or...anything except go, "Huh?" Which is what I did upon reaching the last page.
I'm not even going to go into the ending, which made as little sense to me as the rest of the book. Suffice it to say: skip this one.

Traced: Part One of The Outlier Chronicles by Megan Squires is a terrific read. Its Hunger Games, without the games...yet. There's a Hub and Sectors and Outliers, of course. Wonderful characters, I want all good things for Tessa. Very excited for book 2.
Traced reads as if Twilight has combined with a post World War III novel (1984/Hunger Games). It focuses way too much on the narrator and her relationship with two boys. Tessa has much more character than Bella but I could have cared less about her relationships. I wanted to be shown more of the world and her gifts.
