About the author

P. Kunhiraman Nair also known as Mahakavi P, was a renowned Malayalam poet whose works romanticised the natural beauty of his home state of Kerala in southern India and juxtaposed it with the hard realities of his life and times.
Born in Bellikoth near Kanhangad of North Malabar,P., as he is known (simply by his initial), led a Bohemian lifestyle, wandering across Kerala, living in several places, meeting their people and making them part of his life and literature. He worked as a school teacher, having taught at Koodali near Kannur and Kollengode in Palakkad district.
Poetry formed his main genre of work (it isn't exactly known how many poems he penned during his half-a-century career as many are irretrievably lost), though he has also penned stories, articles and a few plays. His autobiography, 'Kaviyude Kaalpaadukal' (The Footmarks of a Poet), is one of the celebrated works in prose in Malayalam.
The central Kerala belt of Valluvanad, known for its scenic charm and cultural vibrancy, worked as a major source of inspiration for the poet, who lived there for long—partly as a family man. His works are also dotted with metaphors from Kathakali, the classical dance-drama of his region.
Mahakavi P.Kunhiraman Nair began to write poems from his very early age of twelve years and continued till his last breath. His autobiography, Kaviyude Kalpadulal (foot prints of a poet) is quite different from other autobiographies and sweet as his poetries.
He worshipped nature and traveled extensively. He is a poet who forgot to live amidst his unending journey in quest of nature and poems. He is loved by many and known as a devotional poet. Devotion, natural beauty of Kerala, temples, deities, stories of epics, rituals and customs are resembled in his poetry
He studied at Sree Neelakanta Government Sanskrit College Pattambi and with the proficiency in Sanskrit, he initially worked at a printing press in Thrissur for a few years. Later, he published a newspaper from Kannur, before taking to teaching job and gaining name as 'Kavimaash' (poet teacher) among children. He retired from service in 1961.

Of the many autobiographies I read this one is very unique. Author don't use the word "I" to describe himself in a book of more than 700 pages. The language and the contents vary drastically just like the lifestyle of Mahakavi P.. In some chapters he's telling very day-to-day activities but in many other chapters he's going very deep into the cultural richness of Kerala especially Malabar area (Guruvayoor to Kasargode).

This book contains all 3 autobiographies of Mahakavi P. published over the time. But the book doesn't have the introduction written by M.T. upon Mahakavi's request. I feel inclusion of that essay by M.T. would have added more justice to the book and helped the readers to understand Mahakavi better as a human being.

The author is looking back at his own footsteps (Kaviyude Kaalpaadukal) as he travelled in quest of meeting the goddess of poetry (Nithyakanyakaye thedi) and his unfulfilled journey towards self realization (Enne Thirayunna Njan).

In first book, Kaviyude Kaalpadukal, - which is the longest one too - there is no linear order to the story he tells. You feel so much of his life is missing from these books when you look at his life full of unique experiences.

The poetic prose in which Mahakavi P. has written this book, is very unique and enriching and I don't think there other books with such rich poetic language.

ഒരു മഹാകവിയുടെ ആത്മകഥ. കവിത കൊണ്ട് ധനികനും ജീവിതം കൊണ്ട് പരമ ദരിദ്രനുമായ ഒരു മഹാകവി. അദ്ദേഹാം കടന്നു പോയ ഗതകാലങ്ങളിലെ ഓർമകളെ, കാൽപ്പാടുകളെ മൂന്നു പാരമ്പരകളായി പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ചതാണ് കവിയുടെ കാൽപ്പാടുകൾ എന്ന ഈ ആത്മകഥ. കവി ഒരു യാത്രയിലാണ്. പതിനാലാമത്തെ വയസ് മുതൽ ആരംഭിച്ച ഒരു യാത്ര. ഒരിക്കലും താൻ കണ്ടെത്താനോ കണ്ടുമുട്ടാനോ പോകുന്നില്ല എന്നു തോന്നിക്കുന്ന കവിതയെന്ന അനശ്വരയായ തന്റെ നിത്യകന്യകയെ തേടിയുള്ള ദീർഘയാത്ര. ഈ യാത്രയിൽ അയാൾ മറ്റെല്ലാം മറക്കുന്നു, അല്ലെങ്കിൽ അയാൾക്ക് എല്ലാം നഷ്ടപ്പെടുന്നു. കവി തന്നെ ഒടുവിൽ ഇങ്ങനെ നെടുവീർപ്പിടുന്നു "എല്ലാം പോയി എല്ലാവരും പോയി പ്രിയപ്പെട്ടതും പ്രിയപ്പെട്ടവരും എല്ലാം ഒഴുക്കിൽ ഒലിച്ചു പോയി". ജീവിതത്തിലെ സ്‌മൃതിഭാണ്ഡം അഴിച്ചു വെച്ച നോക്കുമ്പോൾ കവി തിരിച്ചറിയുന്നു കഴിഞ്ഞ കാലം വെറും നഷ്ടക്കച്ചവടമായിരുന്നു എന്ന്. എങ്കിലും അദ്ദേഹത്തിനുള്ളിൽ ഒരു വിളക്ക് കെടാതെ കത്തുന്നുണ്ട്. അത് വസന്ത പരിമളം ചിന്നുന്ന നിത്യകന്യകയെ പറ്റിയുള്ള സ്മരണയാണ്. അത് കവിയുടെ രക്ഷാമാർഗമാണ്. ജീവിതം ആ മാർഗ്ഗത്തിലൂടെയുള്ള സഞ്ചാരമാണ്. ആ യാത്രയെ മലയാളമെന്ന സമ്പുഷ്ടമായ ഭാഷയിലെ ആഴമുള്ള വാക്കുകൾ കൊണ്ട് മഹാകവി രേഖപ്പെടുത്തുമ്പോൾ ഈ ആത്മകഥ എന്തുകൊണ്ടും മറ്റുള്ള ജീവിതകഥകളിൽ നിന്നു വ്യത്യസ്തവും മികവുറ്റതും ആകുന്നു.

കുഞ്ഞിരാമൻ നായർ ഒരു സഞ്ചാരിയായിരുന്നു. എന്നാൽ ഏറെക്കാലം തമ്പടിച്ചത് വള്ളുവനാട്ടിൻ്റെ മണ്ണിലായിരുന്നു. പട്ടാമ്പിയിലും കൊല്ലങ്ങോട്ടും തിരുവില്യാ മലയിലും ഏറെക്കാലം പാർത്തു. എവിടെയൊക്കെയോ പൊറുതി കൂടി. ജീവിതം ആഘോഷിച്ചു. എന്നും ഓട്ടക്കൈ ആയിരുന്നു. എന്നും ഒന്നുമില്ലാത്തവനായിരുന്നു. കയ്യിൽ കവിത മാത്രം.
