Bluebonnet #2

The Care and Feeding of an Alpha Male

Rate this book
Beth Ann needed a hero…

Beth Ann Williamson has finally had it with her on-and-off fiancé of nine years. The problem? No one in town seems to believe her when she says it’s really over. Now Beth Ann is determined to show the small town of Bluebonnet, Texas, that she can take care of herself. That means opening her own salon and not taking the help that her ex-fiancé seems determined to offer.

Of course, even the best laid plans go awry when she’s stranded in the woods in the middle of a downpour. Some independent woman she is. She can’t even find her way out of the woods without the help of a handsome, but scowling, Marine.

She got more than she bargained for…

A die-hard survivalist, Colt Waggoner’s none too pleased when he’s sent to find the town’s pampered princess. He’s even more annoyed when Beth Ann isn’t grateful for the rescue. Fine, then. He’ll just have to teach the sexy blonde a lesson--a weekend of roughing it out in the wild. Just the two of them, alone, in muddy, wet clothing that needs to come off…

But Beth Ann isn’t the spoiled princess he thought. And when she propositions him for a one night stand, he knows he should turn it down. Because this alpha male might need more than just one night in her bed to satisfy him…

This is a pen name for Jill Myles.

Jill Myles has been an incurable romantic since childhood. She reads all the 'naughty parts' of books first, looks for a dirty joke in just about everything, and thinks to this day that the Little House on the Prairie books should have been steamier.

After devouring hundreds of paperback romances, mythology books, and archaeological tomes, she decided to write a few books of her own - stories with a wild adventure, sharp banter, and lots of super-sexy situations. She prefers her heroes alpha and half-dressed, her heroines witty, and she loves nothing more than watching them overcome adversity to fall into bed together.

This was a cute, sexy little contemporary about a pretty, upscale young woman (Beth Ann) from a small town, prominent family and a guy from the wrong side of the tracks (Colt). They'd known each other since high school but never hung with the same crowd or really cared for each other. She was the pretty, popular student with the star athlete boyfriend; he was the social outcast who couldn't wait to leave town and his dispeputable family behind. Colt ends up coming back to town after serving in the Marines and works as a survivalist at a local ranch; Beth Ann has just dumped (for the umpteenth time--but this time she means it!)) her philandering, high school boyfriend and has opened her own hair salon. Colt happens to be the best friend of Beth Ann's best friend's future husband (The Girl's Guide to (Man) Hunting), so lately they've crossed paths. While trying to get her younger sister out of trouble, Beth Ann ends up stranded at a muddy campsite--Colt rescues her but decides she needs to be "taught a lesson". And he lies to Beth Ann, telling her that they won't be able to make their way out of the rainy campgrounds until morning. They're each physically attracted to the other, and soon realize that they've had the wrong impression of each other. Sparks fly and they spend an erotic night together under the stars. Will this be a one time only, or can Beth Ann and Colt actually have a chance together?

This was a typical, beach-read-type, light contemporary except for one thing--it was quite erotic! Beth Ann and Colt really, really steamed up the sheets! After years of being with a guy who never really appreciated her, Beth Ann was out to finally become her own woman and do what she wanted to do, the hell with what the town thought, and what she most wanted to do was be with Colt. Of course, that didn't sit too well with her whiny, controlling ex, or most of the townspeople, who wanted to see her with her longtime boyfriend. Why Beth Ann didn't get more of a backbone, and tell everyone to mind their own business, I don't know. This irked me a little--at times I thought she was too nice, and not the sharpest tool in the shed (she had no idea who was trying to sabotage her fledgling business--even though it was quite obvious).

Colt I liked, even though he seemed to have a chip on his shoulder about his family. But with Beth Ann he was adorably sweet, a little insecure, appropriately protective, and a whole lot of sexy! *sigh*

So if you're looking for a quick, light read that's surprisingly erotic, I think you'll enjoy this one. It's nothing deep or particularly original, but it's fast-paced and definitely packs some heat. 4 stars

*Warning: This book contains explicit sex (both lots of oral and one anal scene) and graphic language. Not for the faint of heart.

Another book Penguin wants us to purchase for the bargain price of $10? Does anyone know who this author is? Seriously? I don't care how good, no
"new to me" author should be charging such a price for their books. Seriously...whacked.

Light, fun, and sexy!!!
This was my second book by Jessica Clare and I was very impressed with her writing style. I couldn't remember much about the heroine, Beth Ann, in 'The Girl's Guide to (Man) Hunting', only just like she was such a beauty queen and a best friend of Miranda. So when I got to know her better in this book, I felt quite surprised by the depth of her character. I liked that she was never ashamed to tell townspeople that she was with Colt and felt so proud to be seen with him. Lovely woman!

Colt was a sexy hot alpha hero who was extremely protective, possessive, and caring. He was so deeply in love with Beth Ann. When she found out that he lied to her, she broke up with him. Colt was furious with himself for hurting her. He kept her shirt, the one she often slept in, under his pillow just to feel close to her because he desperately missed her. Oh, it just melted my heart!

I could say that the sex scenes were really hot and full of imagination, so much that I never got bored of them.

The ending had me smiling at the thought of Colt and Beth Ann in fancy dress costumes, Batman vs. Wonder Woman! It was a good idea!

This was my pleasurable reading and I’ll definitely read the next book in this series.

This left me wondering: Why on earth do I read books like this?

I mean the storyline is thin- if you don't count the string of continuous smut ( albeit good smut it is ). I like the idea of it. The execution however? Uhm... thin at best... *points at previous comment*

The character building has interesting aspects, I kinda like Colt and Beth Ann. But it feels incomplete. I like the crew, but again same issue. Everybody in Bluebonnet seems kinda interesting, but too cliche. It feels like Colts hotness and all that is based completely on his performance in the sack. And yep he defo delivers there, as I said. Good smut. Beth Ann.. well let's just say I liked her way better than in the first book of the series.

The writing, well, that's probably why I read this finished I guess, is good. Clare knows how to write. And let's just spell it out, she knows how to write smut really well. This is definitely smutilious.

BUUUT there lies my issue, I like a wee bit of good smut, but when half the book is just smut, even if it is good smut, I kinda find myself ... bored?...

The bottom line?
I want more than just sex!

I want the feels, depth of character, eloquence and some adventure- naturally I don't frown upon good smut either ;)
Hmmm... So basically I like my romance book the way I like my men...

Originally posted at The Book Nymphoicon AUDIOBOOK icon ADULTSONLY icon alphaYes! I totally enjoyed THE CARE AND FEEDING OF AN ALPHA MALE more that book 1, THE GIRL'S GUIDE TO (MAN) HUNTING. I do believe it was the difference in the couples.

Beth Ann and Colt knew each other in high school. Beth Ann was the popular cheerleading type while Colt was labeled as white trash because of his home life. Years later the two meet again and they can't keep their lust for each other under control.

Colt still has a clip on his shoulder about how the town sees him and his family. He left Bluebonnet to make something out of him and to put distance between him and his family. But some of the citizens in Bluebonnet still see him as white trash.

Beth Ann is smothering under her family's control and the town of Bluebonnet. She's no longer with her fiancé but the town's people just know that she will get back with him because they are so perfect for each other. But what they don't know is that the ex-fiancé is a cheating dirty bag.

I think the added element of the ex-fiancé added to plot every well and helped Beth Ann and Colt over come of the old issues they had. It really helped Colt see Beth Ann in a new light.

Jillian Macie's delivery is spot on for the series. She has a perky and sassy voice that works well for the female characters. Jillian does an ok job with the male characters. I will continue the series on audio.

The Bluebonnet series is an erotic masquerading as a sweet contemporary. Don't let the covers, titles and summaries fool you. This series has some serious heat to it! I recommend Jessica Clare's Bluebonnet series to romance readers that wish they got a little more heat with their small town romances.

Review also posted at Under The Covers Book Blog

Jessica Clare had out done herself with this second installment of the Bluebonnet Series. It had exceeded all my expectations and I can say that it is even better than the first. I cannot tell you how much I loved this book.

Because I loved this book, I feel like I will ramble on with my review so I wanted to keep it to the minimum and answer the questions I usually ask my friends about a book, here goes.

Tell me about the plot:

Well, this installment is about Beth Ann and Colt. Colt Waggoner ex-marine until he was injured, now co-owner of the Survival School with Dane(Hero from The Girl's Guide to Man Hunting). And Beth Ann is a born socialite, recently broken up with her high school sweetheart and attempting to stand on her two feet for the first time. These two were stuck in the local forest due to weather conditions. They spent time together and well, a relationship started from there. During their love escapades, they got to know each other and the book explored more of both their backgrounds. Let me tell you, finding out more about Colt was a drool educing adventure.

Was it hot?

Scorching hot!!! They started out with an extremely hot-bothering sexual tension and when they got together it was a full on explosion of mind-boggling banging, I mean love making. Plus any hero that would pick Batman over Superman for the reason that Batman is a millionaire who can get more “p*ssy” just tells you how hot he can be. NOTE: Watch for Chapter 5 and 10.

Was the Hero an Alpha?

This question goes hand in hand with the first. Yes. Colt is an amazing ALPHA male. And when I say alpha, I mean that in a psychological, physical and in his sexual appetite. Arrrg, I am dying to mention a certain scene that had me squirming as I read it. But I will definitely ruin the moment if I say it. However, I will tell you that in this scene, Colt shows how possessive he can be. Did I mention Colt is super thick and tatted?

Was the Heroine a dits?

Not in the least. Beth Ann came from a wealthy family; she is pretty, smart and courageous to start a new life of her own. Her downfall was her ex-fiancée who controlled her every move. Because of his mistreatment, she decided to end it and finally stand on her own. She never played the pity-card, in fact, she hated it when people treated her as if she is helpless.

Was it romantic?

Absolutely! The whole world seemed to be against their union including their friends who seem to think what they have is nothing but a fling. But love conquers all. Though their trials was hard, they stuck with each other. It was incredible to read about their love story.

Was it funny?

Yes. It was. The banter between the friends was hilarious and I found myself LOL several times. The main characters, Beth Ann and Colt are comical in their comments as well as the side characters.

Secondary Stories:

I love the recap of Dane and. We get a good amount of them in this book as well as Brenna and Grant, which I think, will be the next H/h of the next book. I can see the big set up for them and I can predict that it will be just as hot as this one.

Do I recommend it?

Plain and simple…. absofuckinlutely

The Care and Feeding of an Alpha Male is the only book I've ever read in the Bluebonnet series written by author Jessica Clare but it is actually the second installment in the series. I love these types of romance series where each book is a fresh story with a different set of lead characters. I didn't get the feeling I missed anything by reading this one book out of sequence. I actually enjoyed the characters and story in this book but there were too many sex scenes for my personal taste. Don't get me wrong, I can appreciate a good sex scene...I'm a healthy woman and lover of a good, sexy romance novel but this couple did almost everything and almost all the time- oral, anal, vaginal, self-stimulation, they did it in the woods, in other people's houses, in businesses, while eating birthday cake, while wearing role play costumes...it was a little much in my opinion. I read erotica sometimes but not on a regular basis so readers who prefer this genre above others would likely enjoy it a great deal.

The storyline described in the synopsis is actually what drew my attention to the book and what kept my interest. Colt Waggoner is a former marine and survivalist who is assisting in evacuating a campground during a storm when he runs into the town's princess Beth Ann Williamson. He has always been an outsider in the town and she has always been the privileged mayor's daughter. So when she turns down Colt's offer for help during the storm when she obviously needs it, he decides to teach her a lesson and pretends things are worst than they are, leading Beth Ann to believe that the two of them are stranded in the woods until the storm passes. Beth Ann's character was actually very relatable. She is trying to show the town the "real" her, apart from her well-off family and apart from her ex-fiancé who won't accept that she doesn't want to marry him. The town doesn't understand why she wants to be anything different than the role she has always filled but Colt does understand...and he likes the "real" Beth Ann very much. There are some other developments that occur during the story that keep the reader's interest and add to the story's climax. I'm happy to say the book ends with reader satisfaction...and of course many, many satisfactions for the characters.

The Bluebonnet series includes the following installments:
#1-The Girl's Guide to (Man) Hunting
#1.5-The Billionaire of Bluebonnet
#2-The Care and Feeding of an Alpha Male
#2.5-Hot Summer Nights
#3-The Expert's Guide to Driving a Man Wild
#4-The Virgin's Guide to Misbehaving

My favorite quote:
“Sometimes we just have blinders to how certain people are, because we want them to be how they are in our minds.”

Review posted: Happily Ever After - Reads

Beth Ann is DONE with her cheating, whiny fiancé. But her small town of Bluebonnet has seen this happen before and because Beth Ann didn’t tell everyone the truth about Allan and his cheating ways, they’re all convinced that Beth Ann will forgive him once again, they’ll reconcile and all will be right with the town’s golden couple. But Beth Ann is having none of that. She’s building up her own business and sink or swim she’s going to do it all on her own. However, one Friday night spent trying to locate her troublesome younger sister, who’s at a party in the woods, leads her right into Colt. They’re stranded in the woods (slight lie from Colt) during a storm through the weekend and get very up close and personal.

Beth Ann and Colt have never been friends. Beth Ann came from a wealthy family on the right side of the tracks while Colt had to endure the label “white trash Waggoner” growing up. He lived with his brothers and dad in a double wide that needs to be condemned. He escaped, enlisting as soon as he graduated, but a knee injury sent him home and now he’s running wilderness/survival classes with his friends Grant and Dane. What Colt knew about Beth Ann came from just seeing her around town and getting her glares or barely a glance from her. She’s different now, away from Allan, she’s trying to be her own person, doing things she wants to do and she wants to flirt with Colt and that leads to thoughts of a one night stand.

Colt and Beth Ann’s sexy weekend in the woods leads into a tentative relationship. The small town residents all have their own opinions, all bad toward Colt and his “lower” status. I really wish Beth Ann would have stood up for him in front of these people. She doesn’t buy into their talk, but she also doesn’t stick up for her man either. That aside, I had fun getting to know this couple. They’re very naughty, Beth Ann is up for any and everything and Colt is more than happy to oblige. The sex ranges from sweet and sort of vanilla to rough and dirty. And there’s a lot of it happening throughout the story.

I liked seeing Beth Ann grow into her own, her salon is struggling as competition opens up down the street and all her customers start flocking there. She can’t afford an apartment but she doesn’t give up. She keeps fighting for the life she wants and she’ll keep doing it until she can’t go on anymore. Colt gives her the support she needs and more importantly, he’s a shoulder for her to lean on when her life away from her relationship with Colt is going downhill.

There are lies that play a part in their relationship – Colt keeps a couple things from Beth Ann that you just know are going to explode at some point. Personally, I hate lies that play a role in any relationship and are used as means for angst. I did like that the once the truth came out, things didn’t feel so drawn out. The truth came out, feelings were hurt and the resolution all happened in a fairly quick manner. I just wish the truth would have come out a little sooner in the story.

I had fun reading this latest installment in the Bluebonnet series. I found Beth Ann to be so enjoyable both away from Colt and with him. Their relationship is hot and sexy and for me, what helped balance the many sex scenes throughout, was the story that played out for Colt and Beth Ann outside the bedroom. Colt struggles with family issues, Beth Ann with her business, but together they’re a fun, loving couple and were charming to get to know.

Beth Ann and Colt were my favorite characters, even as secondary ones, from the first book of this series. I still liked them a lot as they take center stage in their own book. We meet Beth Ann just as she's trying to make some big changes in her life - a break with her cheating boyfriend of 9 years, starting her own business, and separating herself from her family's expectations. I wanted her to put her foot down sooner, but I appreciated the process Clare takes her through as a character. Colt isn't an Alpha in the traditional sense. He is a quiet man of few words who demonstrates confidence in who he is and loyalty to both Beth Ann and his family.

Because I liked the characters so much, I wanted to love this book. I didn't. It is much more erotica than contemporary romance. Just when something would happen or Colt and Beth Ann would start to have a conversation the sex would start before any resolution. As I've said in previous reviews, the little details matter a lot to me. I have a hard time believing any southern woman would go to a different salon just because she has a coupon. Southern women are very loyal to their hairdresser. Also, there was a glaring issue with a plane ticket near the end of the book. You don't get one plane ticket and then if you lose it you have to buy another one. Maybe air travel worked that way before computers but not in my flying lifetime. Details matter, especially when a pivotal part of the story.

The Care and Feeding of an Alpha was a sweet book. The H/h had started off hating each other for their own reasons, but after being stranded (not really;)) Colt and Beth Ann started a hot steamy relationship. I felt for Beth Ann she had Asshole of an EX, and a demanding to be perfect family. I did like that Beth Ann didn't care what the people of Bluebonnet thought of her anymore, she wanted to be her own person. Colt realized almost right a way during their weekend in the woods that he misjudged her. Colt was always sweet to Beth Ann and encouraged her to her herself. I also really loved that Colt always protected Beth Ann especially from Allen (the asshat). I wish Beth Ann or colt busted Allen and let the town known what an ASS her was that would've been great.

Best Line:
“Do I have any choice? It’s either that or
let Lucy get impregnated by the Colossus,
right?”

This was a quick read with hot, steamy sex. The hero's revenge in the beginning was comical, and he quickly redeemed himself. The heroine's down-to-earth-ness and her desire to do things unexpected helped make her likable.

Overall, the plot seemed normal romance-in-a-small-town fluff, and instances of heavy or more in-depth situations/conflicts with the main characters fell short either because they were too dramatic or not given enough character reaction.

Beth Ann Williamson has had enough of her cheating, long time boyfriend Allen. She’s also had enough of being the perfect girlfriend, perfect daughter, perfect everything, it’s time she figured out what she wants to do with her life. After finally breaking off her relationship she finishes beauty school and opens a salon in her small hometown of Bluebonnet, Texas. Keeping the actual reasons for why she ended her longtime relationship with the town’s favorite son to herself, she can’t seem to make everyone else believe that they’re over, not her parents, not the townsfolk and especially not Allen. One evening her mother sends her to retrieve her younger, rebellious sister from an outing in the woods. While fumbling around and getting turned in circles over and over by her sister’s friends she realizes she’s lost and to make matters worse it’s now raining so hard she’s soaking wet and covered in mud. Enter Colt Waggoner to the rescue.

Colt Waggoner grew up in Bluebonnet as the boy from the wrong side of the tracks. Once he joined the Marines he had no intention of ever coming back, but fate steps in and after an injury ends his military career he retreats to Alaska learns to live off the land. Now he’s back in town and is part owner in a survivalist camp with his two best friends. As part of the rescue team sent to guide a group of role-playing QuestMasters out of the woods, he’s a little surprised to see that Beth Ann, in a dress and heels no less, is one of those people. At first he tries to help her, but when she brushes him off saying she doesn’t need his help he decides to teach her a lesson. He lies to her, telling her that the river is flooded and they are stuck out in the wilderness for the night. Together.

I’m a big fan of this author, in all her many forms, Jessica Clare, Jill Myles and Jessica Sims. Whether it’s paranormal or contemporary romance, I just like her voice and find myself looking forward to whatever she puts out. Colt and Beth Ann at first seem to have some rancor between them, mainly due to preconceived notions from back in their high school years, Colt is one of those “white-trash, no-good Waggoners” and Beth Ann is the daughter of the town Mayor and perfect girlfriend. Colt soon realizes Beth Ann is has changed, she doesn’t complain about being wet and muddy, even seeming to be up for their adventure and looking forward to some naked time with him. They spend a steamy, sexy weekend exploring each other and find that they enjoy each others company. When they get home they make the decision to carry on with their affair. Everyone seems to be against them and no one can understand why Beth Ann would want Colt when she could so easily take back Allen and live the carefree, pampered life. Beth Ann’s business is going down the tubes, she can’t find a place to live and her ex won’t leave her alone and take no for an answer. Right as things are starting to go good with Colt, everything else in her life is falling apart. She won’t accept help because she’s determined to do everything on her own, but Colt is there to lend support and help her in any way he can.

I really liked this couple and loved seeing their character development over the course of their relationship. They have just has many sweet, tender love scenes as wicked and naughty ones. I think the author did a fabulous job of creating a very erotic story while still letting the relationship unfold very believably. The main conflict in this story comes from secrets Colt is keeping to himself and Beth Ann’s problems with her ex and struggling to keep her business afloat. Everything comes to a head and is resolved pretty quickly, but to be honest I would have really liked to see Colt kick Allen’s ass for his involvement in Beth Ann’s troubles. In fact I think this might have made me enjoy the ending so much more. Other than that, I had a lot of fun reading this couple’s love story and am looking forward to the next release in the series, which I think will be about Grant and Brenna. They have a love/hate relationship that is sure to be sexy in the extreme when they finally figure out how much they want each other. Final Grade: B

Beth Ann Williamson has finally broke it off with her high school sweetheart, after years of him cheating on her. She realizes all the expensive gifts he gave her will never make up for the fact that he is never going to change, and she needs to move on. To her frustration, the small town of Bluebonnet, Texas don’t want her to give him up. Daily questions asking her why and when she will take him back, just make Beth Ann want to hide. Worse, she has moved back into her parent’s house until she can save some money to get a place of her own. When things get too much, she sleeps in the back room at the local salon she owns.

One night, her parents learn that her seventeen year old sister has snuck out to meet up with her boyfriend at some sort of QuestMasters weekend outing in the woods. Not able to say no to her parents, especially with her dad (the mayor) up for reelection, Beth Ann tromps out to the woods in the rain to try to find her sister and drag her home. The rain intensifies and by the time she is soaked and muddy, with still no sister, the volunteer firefighters have shown up to escort everyone out. This is where our hero comes into the picture. Colt Waggoner not only volunteers with the fire department but also works with his buddies in an outdoor survival type school. He has had a crush on Beth Ann since high school, but they ran in different circles – hers being the popular crowd, and his the more low-class. But times have changed, and when he finds Beth Ann deep in the woods, he tells a white lie to her that the river has flooded the road and they are stuck out in the woods for the night. Luckily there is a tree house of sorts they take shelter in, where Beth Ann then admits she has never had a one night stand and wants to try it out. Cue the sex.

This is the second book in this series and I liked this one a little more than book one. Colt and Beth Ann have a very cute and oh so sexy relationship. She surprises him at first, not complaining that she is dirty and stuck in the rain and very open sexually. He of course is totally alpha, full of ‘hey darlin’ with a wide repertoire of the sexy sex. The one night stand very easily turns into a relationship. From this point of view, there is really no conflict. They have sex, they enjoy it, they figure out they like spending time together, have a tiny fight at the end, and then happily ever after. I actually didn’t mind the ease of the relationship in this one, although this book is very heavy on the sex. I think some time spent just courting each other would have been nice to see. There is a really sweet scene with Colt and a cake though (that turns totally dirty) that I enjoyed.

The conflict centers more around Beth Ann's ex-boyfriend who refuses to let her go. This seemed to drag on a bit during the book, with a surprise at the end that I didn’t really like. I get tired of the stalker ex-boyfriend in romance books because they are so predictable as this one is.

Overall though if you like erotic books with lots of dirty talk, an alpha hero you might enjoy this one. There is also sex in a salon chair. That was a first for me.

Beth Ann was with her boyfriend for 9 years but during that time he cheated on her multiple times. She would break up with him, he would woo her back and then he’d eventually do it again. Why she stayed with him for 9 freaking years was beyond me. She finally got the balls to break up for good 10 months earlier. She’s started her own beauty salon in the town of Bluebonnet but no one knows why she broke up with Allan. The townspeople are constantly asking her when she’s going to marry that nice boy Allan, etc. and it goes on and on. Beth Ann is darned sick of it but no matter how many times she says she’s not getting back together with him the people just smile and move along, acting like they hadn’t heard her at all. Even Allan doesn’t believe that it’s for good – the slime.

One night Beth Ann is asked by her mother to go find her 17 year old sister who apparently has snuck out of the house to attend a Questmaster tournament. Beth Ann heads out into the rainy night but can’t find Lucy. The tournament eventually gets evacuated because of the rain but Beth Ann has no idea. In steps Colt who is a volunteer evacuator and a survivalist. He recognizes Beth Ann’s car and plans to go into the forest and teach her a lesson – apparently the two have never gotten along. (I didn’t read book 1 so I never actually saw them not getting along.) Colt tells Beth Ann that there’s no way out of the woods and they’ll have to spend the night. After one night though Colt realizes that he actually likes Beth Ann – he’s just lusted after her before this – because she’s got a backbone and goes with the flow – not the prissy girl he believed her to be at all.

After the first night they end up sleeping together and that pretty much starts the relationship. Throughout the book Colt is loving and caring and thoughtful and Beth Ann just soaks it up. The problems start when Beth Ann finds out that Colt lied to her about their first weekend together because trust is a big issue in her life as she never had any in Allan.

The story was pretty easy-going with Colt and Beth Ann relationship. The conflicts arose mainly from Beth Ann’s ex, issues with Beth Ann’s business and of course the whole trust issue. I really liked the story so much but I have to say there was just too much sex in the book for me. I enjoy sex scenes in books if it furthers the story but for me a lot of the scenes in TCaFoaAM were superfluous and I found it a bit annoying. I had a real issue with Beth Ann not standing up for herself with the people in the town and Allan himself – although she did tell him no repeatedly. I also would have liked to have seen Beth Ann’s parents reaction to Colt as they considered him to be poor white trash. Beth Ann’s mom said to Lucy that if Lucy were ever with one of “those Waggoner boys” it would give her father a heart attack. But then we never saw what happened when the parents found out about Colt and Beth Ann.

In the end though I thought it was a good story that I enjoyed very much. I definitely recommend this one if you’re up for a sweet sexy story.

Rating: 4 out of 5

*I gave this audiobook a B for the narration and C+ for the story at AudioGals.*

Being a lover of alpha heroes, I took one look at this title, and knew I had to listen to it! Having previously listened to one of Jessica Clare’s prior titles, The Wrong Billionaire’s Bed, I also knew that I would enjoy Ms. Clare’s mix of contemporary romance with a bit of humor and steamy, passionate love scenes. The Care and Feeding of an Alpha Male, generally delivers on all these fronts, and even includes a little suspense and a few crucial plot twists, to add to its allure. But it also unnecessarily overdelivered in one of those aspects.

Knowing that this was a small-town romance, I innocently expected a little heat. But what I got was so much more, that after a few scenes I found myself fast-forwarding through them (some of which were fifteen minutes or longer). These weren’t necessarily plain vanilla scenes either. It’s not anything I haven’t previously read or listened to before, but it was so unexpected, given this book’s description, and so gratuitous for this kind of story, that I felt it cheapened it for me. Without this issue, I would have given this story a B+.

Beth Ann Williamson, the belle of Bluebonnet, Texas, is finally done with her “perfect” on-again, off-again fiancé, Allen. As the daughter of the small town’s mayor, she understands the value of discretion when it comes to her public life, so she doesn’t tell others about Allen’s philandering ways. Of course, this just means that the whole town believes that they are still together or will eventually reconcile.

When she moves out of Allen’s house, she decides to be self-sufficient for the first time in her life, so Beth Ann opens up her own business – a salon. Things aren’t easy, but she’s learning to get by, even if everyone assumes that her attempt at playing the businesswoman will only be short-lived.

Ex-marine and survivalist, Colt Waggoner, is the exact opposite of the type of person that anyone in Bluebonnet would associate with Beth Ann. Born on the wrong side of tracks, and having grown-up in a trailer, most of the town considers him to be “white trash”.

Having gone to high school with Beth Ann, Colt has steered clear of her most of his adult life, assuming her to be a spoiled princess. One day that changes when during a storm, he gets an opportunity to teach her a lesson. What starts out as revenge, quickly leads to passion, and he neglects to tell her that they really aren’t stranded. One thing leads to another, and Colt and Beth Ann end up exploring a lot more than just the wild wilderness on their off-road weekend.

Expecting nothing more than a one (or two) night stand, both are extremely surprised when they can’t stop thinking of each other, which leads to an attempt to date. But the small town of Bluebonnet is not going to stand idly by and let this great catastrophe take place, never mind that Allen has made it his mission to win Beth Ann back. Can Beth Ann and Colt beat the odds to find a HEA, especially when certain crucial truths are revealed?

The Care and Feeding of an Alpha Male, Bluebonnet #2, by Jessica Clare
Grade: B-

“Just because I am female does not mean I need you to swoop in and be a hero. Sometimes we can save ourselves, you know.”

Colt Waggoner left Bluebonnet, Texas nine years ago and never looked back. Colt tried for years to shake the stigma of being a “white trash Waggoner” his entire life but now that he’s back he can’t seem to get the town to realize he’s changed. When he goes out to help evacuate a festival that go rained out he comes across the town princess Beth Ann Williamson lost in the woods looking for her younger sister. Colt decides to seek revenge on Beth Ann and keep her out in the woods for awhile but he never expected the spoiled girl to be an amazing woman.

Beth Ann Williamson spent nine years of her life trying to be the perfect daughter and girlfriend to her ex Allan and lost who she was. Even though Beth Ann broke up with Allen ten months earlier no one in the town, including Allen, seem to get that she is moving on and becoming her own person. When Beth Ann is sent by her mother to get her sister, she never expected to be stranded with Colt Waggoner but the more time she spends with him the more she likes him. Beth Ann is becoming her own person and Colt might be the man to help her achieve that.

It took me a little while to get into this book but by the end I loved it. This is the second book in the Bluebonnet series but can be read as stand alone with no problem. Beth Ann is your typical queen bee, daughter of the mayor, good girl who smiled when she was told to and stuck by her cheating boyfriend for nine years. Finally Beth Ann has had enough and is doing things for herself and no one else. I will admit that I disliked Beth Ann A LOT when I first started this book but as she got stronger and stood up for herself and what she wanted more the more she grew on me and I found myself cheering for her by the end.

Colt is just yummy and I loved him from the very beginning. I didn’t like that he first started out trying to make Beth Ann suffer a little in the woods or that he lied to her for awhile but he did redeem himself in the end. Colt has a lot of issues with coming from a family that was poor and looked down on in Bluebonnet but I liked seeing him work past the issues but I still felt that he had more to deal with that weren’t talked about or dealt with. I did really enjoy how he brought out a different side of Beth Ann and that he got her to loosen up so much.

I enjoyed this book a lot and my only big issues with it was that the characters repeated themselves a lot and Beth Ann in the beginning. I really hope the next book is Brenna and Grant’s because those two have a lot of sexual tension and I want Grant to be happy again. This was a great contemporary romance and I can’t wait to read more from this author.

DiDi's review posted on Guilty Pleasures

Have you ever realized you weren’t being YOU or you don’t know who YOU are anymore? Well Beth Ann Williamson has and has absolutely had it being who others want her to be, being loyal to her boyfriend of nine years regardless of how many times he has cheated on her. She has started on her own path to independence and is not going to let anyone stop her, including her ex and her parents.

Colt Waggoner, aka “one of those white trash Waggoners”, left town years ago to make something of his life. He has returned to Bluebonnet, TX to work with his friends Dane and Grant in their survivalist training business.

Stranded in the woods in the middle of a down pour Beth Ann finds she cannot resist the sexual magnetism of Colt. She tells him she wants a one night stand and Colt happily complies. The chemistry between these two is scorching hot! Once Colt and Beth Ann return to civilization they find one night was not enough. Colt realizes he has feelings for Beth Ann but is concerned he will not measure up because as far as Bluebonnet is concerned he is still one of those “white trash Waggoners”. Beth Ann doesn’t care she just wants Colt but the town, her parents and her ex will do anything it takes to keep her away from Colt and get her back with her ex.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Colt and Beth Ann. Beth Ann didn’t realize she had a sensual and naughty side until she was with Colt, once she did man o man did she embrace it with abandon. Colt has got to be one of my all time favorite heroes, he is sexy, tender, protective, possessive and loves Beth Ann just as she is. The things that occur in this book with birthday cake will run through my mind and make me fan myself every time I see a birthday cake, good gawd almighty!!!

One thing that I truly enjoyed about this book is that on top of being a sweet, sexy erotic romance, The Care and Feeding of an Alpha Male, is not rushed and it doesn’t feel forced. This is an erotic romance that actually has “romance” in it and the HEA doesn’t come in just a few days. THANK YOU for that Ms. Clare!

The Care and Feeding of An Alpha Male is an extremely sweet and HOT romance, Colt and Beth Ann are lovable, strong and sexy. The story line is funny, sweet, sexy, with just enough conflict and a twist to the story I never ever saw coming. The secondary cast are great, I loved seeing Dean, Miranda, Brenna and Grant. I love Brenna, her quirky ways and how she lives to torment Grant. I am crossing my fingers that we get a story for Grant and Brenna soon, I have a feeling it will be off the charts hot!

Jessica Clare is fast becoming one of my favorite authors.

My Review:
When I read the first book in this series, I wondered if I loved it so much because I was out camping at the time (that book is all about the survival school the three guys start in Bluebonnet), but I can easily say now that I just truly like this series.

Colt is the hero of the story. His family was always at the bottom of the social chain in Bluebonnet. Even though he left, joined the military, and made something of himself, his family is still the same and the people of Bluebonnet haven't forgotten. He has very wrong notions of who Beth Ann truly is. He just knows what he remembers from high school, but she's evolved since then. When he sets out to take her down a few notches, he is in for a surprise as he completely and totally falls for her.

For Beth Ann, the feelings are mutual, but she's the town darling who's always dated the town prince. The town refuses to see her with someone else. They just know that she is meant to be with Allan, although Beth Ann has sworn over and over again that it's over. They can't stand to not see her with Allan, but to substitute Colt for him is completely unthinkable. These two definitely face some issues with this small town who stays in everyone else's business.

Colt has a hard time seeing that Beth Ann truly cares for him. The town has a prejudice against him and it's colored his ability to see what Beth Ann truly sees in him. It was interesting to watch their relationship develop especially in the public sphere of this small town. At the same time, Beth Ann is dealing with this mess with the town and her ex, her business, which has been her sole means of identity for the last couple of years, is also failing. Everything seems to be falling apart. Her one high point is Colt, but he continues to get in the way of that.

I liked everything about this story. The plot was woven really well. I wasn't surprised by any of it, but I enjoyed every single minute of it. Jessica Clare simply writes fun, entertaining, and did I mention hot???...OMG! books. I love the town of Bluebonnet and cannot wait for Grant's story. His history is so tragic, but the sexual chemistry is sizzling between him and Brenna. I can't wait to see it explode!

I absolutely loved this book. This one is my favorite of the series so far. I am a huge fan of Jill Miles a/k/a Jessica Clare's writing. Jill's Succubus Diaries series is one of my all time favories. Jill really knows how to make a hot and sexy alpha male and a romance that is not only sexy but laugh out loud funny. The Care and Feeding of an Alpha Male (love that title) was no exception. One of the things I noticed about this book compared to her other stories is there is a HUGE amount of sex in this one. I was wondering if Beth Ann and Colt would ever come up for air. Jill, you are naughty naughty girl. LOL

Beth Ann Williamson is alone and on her own after breaking things off with her on again off again fiancé, Allen. Everyone thinks she's nuts for breaking up with him and thinks she will finally come to her senses and take him back. They just don't know what a lying cheating bastard he really is. After one of her family's many fundraisers, she sets off to find her sister at a Quest Masters party in the woods. It's dark and raining like hell and she is unable to locate her sister. Rescue workers evacuate the party and she is stuck in the woods alone until Colt Waggoner comes along. They hate each other and she is especially nasty to him. He wants to teach her a lesson and tells her that they are stuck in the woods for the weekend. They learn a lot about each other in their time together in the woods and Beth Ann offers him one night of sex. One night becomes many nights and they fall hard for each other, but Colt is keeping a big secret and Beth Ann wants a man she can trust. Allen tries to come between them and Colt's protective, alpha male side comes to the surface. Will Colt's secret come between them or will their love for each other be strong enough?

The hero was a great well developed character before we even get to the book. I liked that the book was not about him growing up (I am getting tired of this). I thought the development of the heroine (Beth Ann) was well thought out. I really liked that Clare allowed time to elapse in the book. You don't read about all the time passing, but get a character statement here or there along the lines of "I know it's been a month but...". I also like that the H/h didn't just "get back together".

So why only 2 starts, the Clare put in sex scenes for the sake of sex scenes. I don't mind explicit scenes but they were mostly the same! I got really tired of Beth Ann having to help Colt get her off (that was in EVERY scene). While it might be true, I don't want that in my romance books. This book was definitely erotica in my mine, which is fine also; it just wasn't well written erotica. Take out the explicit nature of the sex scenes and it was just a romance novel with a ho-hum story line.

THE CARE AND FEEDING OF AN ALPHA MALE is a deliciously hot read! Clare knows just how to build up the sexual tension and just when it hits its fevering point, she sets the pages blazing! The unique blend of sweet small-town romance and scorching hot sex scenes will have readers swarming to get their hands on this book.

With lots of drama, a touch of charm and plenty of hotter- than-hell sex, Jessica Clare has created a book that I could not put down. She is an author that readers need to keep an eye on.

I loved this love story. It about Beth Ann and Colt deciding to have a one night stand that, of course, lead to another night. Then another. Then another. You know how it goes. But the story line is a little unique because her ex turns out to be one unexpected. No matter the trails that they have to face, they end up HEA. And I love HEA. This is the third book in this series. Which I did not think that I was gonna like? But I was wrong. Jessica Clare is a great write and I will pretty much read anything the she creates. I am looking forward to the last book in the series. Great reads.

I have for a long time been a fan of Marines and Cowboys but oh my word ! This author took everything I love about reading and combined it all into one.

We have the small town, the here and there characters (that you can so tell will get their own books) a sexy cowboy kind that use to be one hot Marine. The sex scenes were smoking hot ! I could stop reading ..seriously ladies I had to force myself to stop just rest the eyes a bit.

Fabulous read and I look forward to more !
