Rate this book
The island of Kiria has been hidden away for hundreds of years behind great barriers of solid magic. It is a land of peace, ruled by the Magical Nobility and supported by the non-magical Commoners.

When she is brutally attacked, 8-year-old orphan Liane discovers that she is by blood Kirian Nobility; to save her life, her magic reveals itself, only to be shattered in the same fleeting moment.

Unable to use and learn magic the normal ways and forced to delve into the deepest, darkest secrets of magic in an effort to find her own unique style of casting, Liane rises to the top of her class - until her one and only true friend, a warlock with a mysterious past, vanishes.

Liane is the MagicWarper, forced to choose between everything she has worked to gain and the safety of her best friend.

Love this author's online works, but sadly did not really enjoy this story.

3 stars for first 70% of the book (school arc), 2 stars for the last 30% (the final conflict/climax), which rounds it down to 2 overall for me. Generally, it was very much a slice of life story and I missed having an overarching plot.

We follow the protagonist through her magical schooling (within a decently interesting magic system) and her teenage years, dealing with a magical disability and her insecurities. Her solution: outwork everyone else to gain competence and confidence. (You love to see it.)

There are minor conflicts here and there, and some great moments of triumph in this arc. But I'm personally not a fan of the lack of a larger overarching plotline. Her school time is essentially just school time.

The final conflict/climax essentially comes out without prior emotional investment and setup, and fell flat for me.

I am a longtime fantasy reader. I can't write my own, so I read and criticize others. I know that this review may not hold weight with you, but I am writing it all the same.

The Magic Warper is a good book. I won't say a great book, but it has what I am looking for in a fantasy series. A good main character, who is powerful in his or her own right, with good friends as well as a couple of villains that actually put her life in danger. Too many characters are too powerful, and only fall under equally powerful or more powerful villains.

The main character(who is female)has a romantic interest, but that interest is one that is only hinted at, rather than immediate attraction. I thought that the pacing of the story was a little rushed, in one case, she is taking a class, and in the next few pages, she is taking the final for the class. I would like to see some more world-building as well, as for the majority of the story, we see only the school she is attending, and a few other minor locations.

I do like a bit of hero worship in my stories, a sense of worship by the common people, a bit of pomp and circumstance. A good number of the books I write have that, but a couple have too much and others have none at all. This book satisfies that very well.

Love the Story. I love the fact that a little orphan girl can rise above an obvious disability. The magic while powerful doesn't turn her into a MarySue which has become pretty common in stories like this.

Quite fun

I had a lot of fun with the book. Solid, if complicated, magic system, interesting world and characters, and not many plotholes. Bit rushed at times, but mostly solid.
