A Hidden Enemy is the thrilling second book to the Survivors series, and there's so much to like here. After the rather mediocre (but still enjoyable) first book of the series, this was refreshing and every nitpick I had with the last book is pushed to the side upon reading this one. Lucky's loyalties are tested after the Leashed Dogs are attacked by a pack of wild dogs after trespassing in their territory, and he begins to be torn between this new life after the Big Growl and the one he once knew as a Lone Dog scavenging in the city. Unlike the last book, Lucky's character begins to develop as he's struck between decisions. He knows that with everything the other dogs have told him, life is different now and that alone, a dog can't survive the havoc that has wreaked the city. Though of course, it's hard for him to let go of this. Lucky was much more likeable in this book, and the things that go through his mind, especially directed to the Wild Pack from the eyes of a newcomer, matches the reader's feelings. After watching the Leashed Pack from a distance, not wanting to interfere, he comes across Sweet, his old friend from the Trap House, saving her from slipping into a chasm in the earth. Sweet is Lucky's only chance of going forward with a plan his sister, Bella, tells him about. In order to have access to clean water and prey that they want to steal, she suggests that Lucky joins the Wild Pack as a spy. I felt bad for Lucky in the sense that he was being used by his own sister, guilt-tripped into doing it it seemed. I really didn't like Bella in this book for that, but it was interesting character development and I feel she could have some sort of redemption later on in the series.
Lucky goes along with this plan and joins the Wild Pack. The dogs are suspicious of him and hate the fact that he used to be a Lone Dog, taunting him for his City Dog ways and mocking the Leashed Dogs time and time again. Lucky doesn't reveal that he actually new them, causing this conflict to come into play. Lucky begins to feel the tug of pack life the longer he stays, but he tries to push it back, finding a lot of their traditions and way of life inefficient and stupid. He brings back information to Bella, who is able to lead the Leashed Pack to their water source when the pack is busy. Lucky is caught in the act by the Wild Pack's Omega, Whine, who blackmails him into helping him rise in the ranks or else he'd expose his secret. Desperately, Lucky takes the offer.
God I hated this smug little rat, but it made such an interesting plot point and concept. Poor Lucky is now being used by two dogs, but he stays in hopes of helping the Leashed Pack. At the end of the book, the climax kicks off by revealing that Bella was lying about her packmates being weak, sending a band of foxes to attack the Wild Pack. Lucky is completely split between his loyalties and ends up trying to help both packs by killing the foxes. The book ends with Lucky's secret being revealed by Whine anyways, and it ends on another cliffhanger.
This book was such a thrill, with a bunch of action and conflict coming at you from all corners. Of course, it had a couple of minor flaws, but nothing large enough worth mentioning besides the fact that Lucky still thinks he wants to be a Lone Dog, though again, that could just be a key part of his character development. I can't wait to see more from the Pack, and the series is quickly picking itself up for an interesting adventure.
