A Hidden Enemy

Rate this book
Erin Hunter, the #1 nationally bestselling author of the Warriors series, is back with book 2 in the action-packed Survivors series. The time has come for dogs to rule the wild.

In the aftermath of the Big Growl that destroyed their city, Bella and the Leashed Dogs have finally settled in the forest where there is plenty of clean water and prey. But a fierce Pack of Wild Dogs has laid claim to the land, and their menacing Alpha will stop at nothing to ensure that it is his alone.

Lucky has taught the Leashed Dogs much about survival since they lost their longpaws, and they refuse to back down. Bella hatches an intricate plan to force the enemy Pack away—a plan that centers on Lucky's sly cunning and intelligence.

Though he still feels the pull of a Lone Dog life, Lucky agrees to help, knowing that he can't leave his friends until they are safe. Now, Lucky will be tested in more ways than one—and his actions will threaten the survival of both Packs.

I just love animal lit (am I the only one that calls it that?)! Are they masterpieces of modern literature? Uh, probably not, no. But I'm an animal lover, and just as I love fantasy with wizards and dragons, I love hese kind of books because I see through different eyes.

As with the last book I find myself saying "This just isn't the Erin Hunter style of writing." It seems painfully obvious to me that several different authors wrote this who were not involved with the Warrior series. It doesn't have that spark of magic and the plot that other books by the Erin Hunter writers had. The dogs don't really act like dogs, they are written more like small four legged humans which was the first problem I had. The characters are very shallow and flat. There is practically no personality in them - especially the side/background characters.

As with the previous book the plot is also very shallow and hardly believable. There's no real reason for Lucky to stay with either pack and his loyalties are 'tested' but I don't feel the authors wrote it out very well. There were many times when I sat there thinking "Why would you do that? It is the wrong thing to do and goes against what Lucky is trying to do..." The ending was weak, at best - playing (yet again) on the Leashed Dogs inability to think of the dangers outside of their Longpaw homes.

I could see this series ending as a trilogy, very easily. So I don't know what the other 3 or so books are going to be about. I just can't see, or imagine, that there is enough plot or character development left to do anything with, with the way these authors are writing.

1/7/25: DNF. It was wayyyyyyy too based on the dogs’ beliefs. I stopped reading after the first couple chapters and prob won’t be picking the book up again. The first book was okayyyyy but this one was strange. Like, for example, the dogs call the sun, “Sun-Dog” and the moon “Moon-Dog” and saying that sun- and moonset are the “Moon-Dog” and “Sun-Dog” going to sleep, same thing with sunrise and moonrise, both being that the “Sun-Dog” and “Moon-Dog” are “waking up”.
???????
Same thing happened in the first book, yes, but they didn’t mention it THAT much—at least not as much as this book did.
Couldn’t finish.
Disappointed and confused because I LOVE AND ABSOLUTELY LIVE FOR Erin Hunter’s other books, but just could NOT finish this one! Prob won’t ever come back to it and ever resume reading it.

At times I couldn't remember all the characters in this book which made it for me difficult to read. The book was in general okay as also the plot, but I had hoped for more. A little disappointed.

Lubicie pieski? Znacie jakieś książki z czworonogami w rolach głównych? Dzisiaj przychodzę do was z 2 tomem serii, która w interesujący sposób łączy pieski z postapo. Mowa o „Ukrytym wrogu”.🐕

Kiedy Fuks i pozostali członkowie Sfory w Obrożach odkryli las pełen jedzenia i świeżej wody, byli pewni, że odnaleźli nowy dom.

This is the second book in the Survivors series. Lucky made progress helping the Leashed Dogs (led by Bella, Lucky’s litter mate) develop survival skills. Unfortunately they encounter a pack of wild dogs who won’t let them drink from the only fresh water source in the area, and they won’t let them hunt. Lucky infiltrates the wild pack and then things get complicated. He feels allegiances to both groups and to stay alive and help the Leashed Dogs survive, Lucky has to do things he feels are dishonest and dishonorable. The book ends with a fierce battle and Bella and Lucky having to make very hard choices.

This book is okay. I did not enjoy the writing style nor the characters. Erin Hunter's characters (particularly the protagonists) are usually very similar. The plot was fairly okay, but I often find it odd when, in this case a character is half dog, half wolf. Other then this the book was good.

In this book a pack of dogs are trying to find clean water that isn't poisoned. They find a lake and another pack already claimed it. They start fighting and one dogs gets killed. Then there is a big growl (earth quake) that stops the fight. Then Bella (the leader of the pack) thinks that it would be a good idea to send a dog to the pack that fought with them. The only dog that was not seen by the other pack was Lucky. So he went and the rest of the book is how he spy's for the other pack and he get close to them. Then one night as he was sneaking out to go talk with Bella and then the Omega found out that he was a spy and made a deal with Lucky that if Lucky could find a away to make the Omega be higher up in the rank then he wont tell anyone. So he did and another dog was put to Omega. Then in the end Bella got a bunch of foxes and they killed a dog/wolf and a puppy. Then in the end both packs united to fight the foxes off. There is another book so find out what happens to the packs.

I loved how this book had action and suspense. The lesson in the story is friendship. I like that at the end of every chapter there was a cliff hanger, so it was really hard to put the book down. On every page I could see in my mind what was happening. There were a lot of characters bu tit wasn't that hard to keep track of them all. All together it wasn't to hard to read it was about 250 pages and was really a fast book to read.

A hidden enemy by Erin Hunter was a strange, action-packed, and sad at some parts. The main character, Lucky is a leader of a pack of dogs that have been forced away from their city home and are in need of a new home. Lucky was not happy however, because he preffered to be a lone dog and depended on himself but being forced to help lead these dogs to new home was new to him. Lucky and his packmates while they travel they meet an enemy that is not friendly and didn't want to share land or food. I think this book isa good book for people who want a book about dogs who must work and fight for survival and must learn how to cooperate. I rate this book 8.5/10 stars.

I enjoyed this book a lot! The plot is amazing and the characters seem so believable. With my creative head and artistic skills, reading this book took me to whole other dimension filled with lots of excitement! When I read this book, I got so deep into the story that I could almost feel the Characters pain, and relate to some of their situations. The action feels so real, and the defeat of some characters almost made me cry. I loved it so much, that I’m drawing the whole series as a comic in my free time. Some parts of the story didn’t seem like they should’ve been added, But I truly enjoyed reading this book and I bet you will enjoy it as much as I did.

Wheeeeee! A whole new refreshing series from my beloved author, now zoning in on one of my favourite animals -- dogs! If you could make cats and bears interesting and deep, then I have faith in you, Erin! But this time its one main character only, which is a surprising but fun change in her writings, but I can still see her pen in this new and to-be-amazing series. BTW, love the cliffhanger at the end!!

A Hidden Enemy is the thrilling second book to the Survivors series, and there's so much to like here. After the rather mediocre (but still enjoyable) first book of the series, this was refreshing and every nitpick I had with the last book is pushed to the side upon reading this one. Lucky's loyalties are tested after the Leashed Dogs are attacked by a pack of wild dogs after trespassing in their territory, and he begins to be torn between this new life after the Big Growl and the one he once knew as a Lone Dog scavenging in the city. Unlike the last book, Lucky's character begins to develop as he's struck between decisions. He knows that with everything the other dogs have told him, life is different now and that alone, a dog can't survive the havoc that has wreaked the city. Though of course, it's hard for him to let go of this. Lucky was much more likeable in this book, and the things that go through his mind, especially directed to the Wild Pack from the eyes of a newcomer, matches the reader's feelings. After watching the Leashed Pack from a distance, not wanting to interfere, he comes across Sweet, his old friend from the Trap House, saving her from slipping into a chasm in the earth. Sweet is Lucky's only chance of going forward with a plan his sister, Bella, tells him about. In order to have access to clean water and prey that they want to steal, she suggests that Lucky joins the Wild Pack as a spy. I felt bad for Lucky in the sense that he was being used by his own sister, guilt-tripped into doing it it seemed. I really didn't like Bella in this book for that, but it was interesting character development and I feel she could have some sort of redemption later on in the series.

Lucky goes along with this plan and joins the Wild Pack. The dogs are suspicious of him and hate the fact that he used to be a Lone Dog, taunting him for his City Dog ways and mocking the Leashed Dogs time and time again. Lucky doesn't reveal that he actually new them, causing this conflict to come into play. Lucky begins to feel the tug of pack life the longer he stays, but he tries to push it back, finding a lot of their traditions and way of life inefficient and stupid. He brings back information to Bella, who is able to lead the Leashed Pack to their water source when the pack is busy. Lucky is caught in the act by the Wild Pack's Omega, Whine, who blackmails him into helping him rise in the ranks or else he'd expose his secret. Desperately, Lucky takes the offer.

God I hated this smug little rat, but it made such an interesting plot point and concept. Poor Lucky is now being used by two dogs, but he stays in hopes of helping the Leashed Pack. At the end of the book, the climax kicks off by revealing that Bella was lying about her packmates being weak, sending a band of foxes to attack the Wild Pack. Lucky is completely split between his loyalties and ends up trying to help both packs by killing the foxes. The book ends with Lucky's secret being revealed by Whine anyways, and it ends on another cliffhanger.

This book was such a thrill, with a bunch of action and conflict coming at you from all corners. Of course, it had a couple of minor flaws, but nothing large enough worth mentioning besides the fact that Lucky still thinks he wants to be a Lone Dog, though again, that could just be a key part of his character development. I can't wait to see more from the Pack, and the series is quickly picking itself up for an interesting adventure.

Note: This will not be a comphernsive review as this is the 2nd book in the Survivors series.

As I had been reading a lot of chunky books lately, I decided to break it up by reading a less intensive one, and I chose Survivors: A Hidden Enemy by Erin Hunter. It continues the struggles of Lucky and the former pet dogs that he took under his wing as they try to survive in a world racked by dangers such as frequent storms and earthquakes as well as poisoned water and low food stores. In this volume, they encounter other dogs-a Wild Pack- and learn that not every dog is friendly or willing to share their resources, even if it may doom both packs because of their refusal. The outcome of this confrontation will determine whether any of the dogs can survive in this changing world or will they perish because of their inability or desire to adapt?

I really liked that we got to meet an authentic Wild Pack in this book as I was interested in how Hunter was going to showcase this aspect of the series. Would it be similar to Warriors or something completely new? Turns out, it was similar in some ways as they create camps similar to a Warriors camp, patrol their territories and divide their tasks, and have fierce loyalty to each other. However, their social structure is more similar to wolves with them having an Alpha, Beta, and Omega as well as howling to commune with their ancestors/gods/spirits that have passed. When it comes to comparing the two lifestyles, I still like the Warriors’ way of doing things better, but I did enjoy learning about the dogs’ way of doing things. I also liked how Hunter was able to give each dog a distinct personality, and to be honest, I am not really for sure how she did it, especially with juggling so many different breeds and dogs. Somehow she manages to make every dog stand on its own which is useful as it could very easily get confusing if she hadn’t handled it as well as she did.

In all, I thought this was an exciting continuation of the series, and I can’t wait to keep reading. 5 stars and keep writing Hunter, I’ll keep reading☺!

I love reading Survivors. It's cool reading about dogs instead of cats for once. To be honest, I've read these books in a random order, years ago. But I don't remember what happened so I'm reading the series again.

It was a really good book. It had lots of tension and parts that left me holding my breath. Especially the ending. I won't talk about everything that happened, I'll just talk about the interesting parts.
It was awesome, reading about Lucky joining the Dog Pack as a spy. That was one of those parts that left me holding my breath. I was always afraid that he would get caught and found out.

I think that Mulch was a not-so-nice dog, but he didn't deserve to get framed. But I understand why Lucky chose him over the other Pack members. I just feel bad that Mulch got beat up by Alpha and Beta (Sweet) even though he didn't do anything.

THE TENSION AT THE END. I don't like Whine. I never did. ;-; What will Alpha do about Lucky's betrayal? I JUST WANT TO KNOW BEFORE IT KILLS ME!
It's time for Book #3.

Book two in this new series by the Hunter-team. And I will say that even though the Warriors-books had a slower burn, I really think these books are a bit… quicker in the story? If you get what I mean.

I’m still annoyed at the main character Lucky. Although there was a bit less of “I’m a loner-dog! Promise!” this time around, which I appreciate. He is admitting that he likes the bond and belonging there is to be a part of a pack. He admits it. That would never have happened in the previous book.

I liked the half wolf half dog hybrid that is the leader of the wild pack. He’s just called Alfa or wolfdog. A scary character, but not in a villain way. Not once since his introduction did I think of him as a villain. Harsh, tough and sometimes cruel, yes. But not a down and out evil villain. Nor is Sweet, his right hand paw. That pair will do ANYTHING to protect their pack and their territory. Including walking over bodies. The pack-structure is also extremely important in this wild pack. Which was kinda cool to read. I have to wonder why every pack has to have an Omega though, the bottom of the pecking order, the bullied dog? What’s the reason for that, I wonder?

Anyway, there’s obviously similarities to the Warriors books. Especially in this with the wild pack. Bella’s pack of previous pet-dogs are more a gang of friends, even if they DO get tougher in this book, which I really liked. (Especially the smaller dogs! Damn, girl! Who knew a cute Maltese dog could be a fighter like that!) But the similarities are there.

And the spy mission Bella gave to Lucky and is a HUGE part of the book was…. Kinda cold-hearted by her, honestly. Shows that she has slowly grown into her place as a leader to the previous pet-dogs though.

I couldn’t see how this spy mission story would end, but I did not expect what I got. NICE! I like it when even fantasy-books for kids/teens can surprise me! I hope we can get our hands on the next one in swedish soonish. I did enjoy this read for sure, despite some of its weaknesses.

I thought I would give this a chance, after not being terribly excited about the cat version, but even though the sort of warrior tribe hierarchy works better for dogs, I still sort of bristle at the setting. Like, Watership Down is the same thing but rabbits, and I think that's... fine? Maybe it's something about the absurdity of rabbits having a social ladder that I can't get past because I know how cats and dogs are like.

"Only hunters hunt! Patrols only patrol!" Logically, I understand this, but emotionally I think I hate that dogs would be willingly taking on human jobs in a way that's not silly/adorable, independent of humans. Maybe it's the seriousness of it. Maybe it's just that I've already read Watership Down. I don't know.

Despite it being book 2 and not having read book 1, I could at least pick up what was happening. I just couldn't get myself to finish it after getting not even halfway in. I did at least read the last chapter, and it... ends. Just ends, in the middle of a decision point. Not really fond of that, either.

I can see why others would love this series. It just for what reason doesn't feel like my cup of tea. What can I say? Recommended if you liked Watership Down and want to read it but with dogs, I guess.

The book A Hidden Enemy is the second book of the series Survivors, written by Erin Hunter. Unlike other storybooks, the character of this series is a group of dogs. This series of books is about Lucky, the street dog, how he survives with a group of house dogs. Lucky, the only one who knows how to survives outside without human’s help, faced a lot of arguments with dogs that have a totally different experiment than him. However, their pack faced some problems with the other more advance pack that have more experience on surviving by their own. Lucky has finally extricated himself from the old city-dog pack, but he was forced to returen and help them again because of the attack of the wild pack. Because of several reasons, Lucky joined the wild pack while he is also taking care of his old pack. If the leader of the wild pack found out this secrete, then Lucky will end up in death.

I really like the character Lucky, as he is loyal, smart, and kind. We can see these characteristic in the book when he is helping the city dogs. His skills of surviving without human’s help is enough for him to survive, and the city-dogs will only make him encumber him. However, he stll choose to help by using his talent and leadership.

In my opinion, I really recommend this book to people who have a pet or love dogs. This book will gave you a brand new perspective, and giving a illusion on how dogs will survive if humans are gone.

Często, gdy odkładałam książkę to myślałam, by z chęcią do niej powrócić, a podczas czytania strony same uciekały.

THE GOOD

Lucky: I do like Lucky, and this whole book I feel bad for him. His litter sister is guilting him into things he doesn't want to do, he's being forced to lie to dogs he likes, he's being blackmailed to destroy another dog's life and reputation. It seems like everyone is trying to use Lucky for their own gain - like they've forgotten he's supposed to be their friend.

Sweet: I liked Sweet a lot. She's strong and doesn't back down from others.

Fiery and Moon; We don't get to know them much, but I did like what little I saw.

Snap, Twitch, Dart, etc; I really enjoyed a large majority of the Wild pack - with a few exceptions.

THE BAD

Alpha; I could not stand the wolf dog Alpha. He's cruel for the sake of cruelty, and that's no way a leader should be.

Bella; Her schemes and plots and dirty tactics were shameful.

Whine and Mulch: My least two favorite of the Wild pack, they try to make them off as characters to sympathize for, but I really can't bring myself to feel bad for either of them.

I’m a bit torn on this book. This book was certainly better than the first one and had better pacing. However, Lucky’s character has done lots of change, but the writing poorly shows his changes. Lucky is still a frustrating character, but he is less so in this book. There are also a lot of misconceptions of wolves and dogs in this book. While this is fiction and it is not necessarily bad to change animal behavior to fit the narrative and age group that the book is targeted towards, these animals feel more like humans poorly trying to act like dogs and wolves based on prevalent myths surrounding their behavior. Otherwise, I did like seeing Lucky become torn with his loyalties and I do like where his character arc is heading. I was able to sympathize more with Lucky and the world is growing bigger in some interesting ways. The dogs’ myths and legends are also fascinating and I loved that they were featured more.

In this sequel, heartbreak as well as joy envelops this tale. Poor Alfie, so quick to run up to the wild Pack is killed in a border skirmish with Alpha, which broke my heart to read. Lucky manages to convince Sweet and Alpha to take in the Leashed Dogs with poor Sunshine becoming an Omega. They settle into their new roles and try their best to protect the pups in the Pack that belong to Moon and Fiery. Alpha and Lucky disagree on a great deal and Lucky tries his best to remain in the Pack as he continues to spy for Bella prior to them entering the Pack. Prior to Bella and the Leashed Dogs joining Alpha's Pack, Lucky spied for them, letting them know where to safely get water and food sources without getting into an altercation with Alpha's Pack. Lucky and Twitch are also at odds, and the tension between the two begins to boil, which will become dangerous.

Przeczytajcie najpierw pierwszy tom, a później drugi, czyli: „SFORA, UKRYTY WRÓG”

The characters are very thought out, but then again, I've always been a sucker for the cliché characters. The Wild Pack was one of my favorite things with the book, and I really relate along with Lucky, as I grew attached to them.

The Alpha was one of my favorite characters, and added a very good antagonist to the story, even though he wasnt truly the villain. My heart clenched when Bella and the others were being so hesitant about telling him that Bruno and Martha were okay.

If I had to point out a flaw, it would just be the stereotypical jealousy Lucky felt, and how he completely trusted Sweet when she said it was just a "partnership".

Lucky, a Lone Dog, has ended Book One of the Survivor series leading an unlikely pack of “Leashed Dogs” to survive in a world of change and destruction. Book Two sees Lucky drawn to and helping both his friends and another wilder pack. His deception of one to help the other almost costs Lucky his life, but honesty, loyalty, and bravery save him and his friends from destruction.

Although the dog fights are fierce and graphic—I skipped over many some—the life lessons are good for ages nine and older.
