The Witch Collector Part II

Rate this book
The Witch Collector Part II is the dramatic conclusion to Breeda's story, which will prove irresistible to readers of the Beautiful Creatures and Mortal Instruments series.

Picking up from The Witch Collector Part I's cliff-hanger ending, this digital original novel plunges Breeda into Chicago's fantastical underworld, a world of deception, betrayal, and madness.

Breeda is just coming into her budding powers as a powerful witch, alone. Her parents remain missing, and she doubts the intentions of her boyfriend, just arrived from Oregon. As the final battle approaches, who can Breeda trust? There is no one to turn to—except the new allies she has found in an infamous coven for disgraced witches in Chicago. Breeda can't deny that she's drawn to Miro, a darkly mysterious witch from the coven, but might he, too, be touched by the dark?

I was a reader before I was a writer, devouring everything I could get my hands on, including the backs of cereal boxes and the instructions booklet for building the Barbie dream house. Later, my obsession with reading evolved into an absolute need to write. After college, I wrote for national trade magazines, taught writing to college freshmen, and eventually found the guts to try fiction.

I'm the author of the upcoming All the Good Parts (Lake Union, 2016) and Digging In (Lake Union, 2017). Previous published novels include I’ll Be Seeing You and Empire Girls (MIRA Books).

When I'm not writing, I can be found knitting, baking, and doing all kinds of things my high school self would have found hilarious.

I live in the Chicago area with my two teenage boys.

Well, crap.
I have been dreading writing this review. I actually finished the book about three weeks ago and I just...well...ok, it's like this:
So I started pseudo-stalking Loretta Nyhan before I read her books because of Suzanne Palmieri-Hayes and I found I liked her (Loretta. I mean, I like Suzanne, too. Well, adore her, actually. I'll stop there before I sound like a creeper) and so I bought both these books. They were the first two ebooks I ever purchased (I get mine from the library or for free because I'm still not on the ebook bandwagon for about a million reasons. Or seven. Close enough. See how I'm putting off the inevitable?) My point here: I find Loretta to be a delightful person from what I know of her.
Then I read these books and because I like Loretta, I assumed I would automatically like the books just as well but I forgot about that critical-mind thing I have going and I couldn't shut it off because, apparently, it doesn't have an on/off switch and now I have to look like a jerk and I am not meaning to be horrid but even after three weeks of trying to figure out how to be nice about all this or maybe just make things up for the sake of harmony, I can't. I'm not like that. And that leaves me with being a jerk. And apparently all passive-aggressive with my whinging at the front and bitching at the end. Crap.

First, I have to echo what a lot of readers said in their reviews for the first part: I don't understand why this was published in two parts. I'm pretty sure that's a publisher thing - maybe testing the waters on ebook popularity? I don't know. But I felt the story did not need to be separated into two little pieces. It seems like, altogether, it would have been a normal teen paperback book size and the story wasn't in need of a break or anything so...what was that really about? If Harper publishes this in paperback format, I hope they put it all together in one volume.

Second, third, fourth, etc., *sigh* So the things I didn't like about part one are all still here. I couldn't get behind any of the characters as they all shifted around too much for my taste.
The dialogue was better - not as stiff or unbelievable - but it wasn't always appropriate to the surrounding situation. I don't have my tablet with me so I can't look at my notes, but I remember thinking over and over, "Why are they talking about that right now?" So even though conversation flowed better in this part, it didn't necessarily seem relevant or make sense in context of what was happening at the time.
I wanted to get caught up in Breeda's quest, I wanted her to grow into her powers, to realize her potential but the only thing I was caught up in was confusion.

I spent most of my time reading this being confused, wondering what it was that I missed. Probably, I'm just freaking old and don't get it anymore because I truly believe I would have loved this had I read it when I was a teen.

I enjoyed this book. I felt that it was very well written and did a wonderful job of engaging the reader, keeping them in the dark but providing them with just enough information to make them wanting more. It was exciting and well written. I would recommend this book to anyone who is into fantasy and loves magic. The one drawback that I had was that the magic did not feel grounded to anything or have any drawbacks. And it felt as though it is just there and had a limitless concept to it. Despite this, I still enjoyed the book and thought it was a wonderful read.

There is no logical reason for this "book" to be split into two parts since combined they are barely a novella. The book suffers for its brevity, as well as poor character development/consistency. The plot was good, so it gets a star for that. I don't know whether to blame the rest on the publisher or the author but below average is the best I can say about the ultimate product.

This was the conclusion and I have to say it was good. The ending was a little predictable. However getting to the end wasn't. it had a little bit of a twist. Over all the story line was good and everyone got their happy ending. Very good simple read that kept me interested.

Exciting conclusion to Part I! There were unanswered questions until the very end. I thoroughly enjoyed the book.
