Call Me Sonya Grey: A Young Girl's Poems about Death, Life and Adolescence

Rate this book
Call Me Sonya Grey is a personal collection of poetic verse that is at once inspiring and challenging. Beginnng with the loss of her mother at age nine, Tupone Lloyd began collecting her thoughts in 40 poems in a diary from early childhood through her twenties. In Call Me, Tupone Lloyd describes the daily battles of self-image and self-expression she experienced growing up after the passing of one parent and the estrangement of another. With the death of her mother, Tupone Lloyd lost a part of everything she had known. Two states away, she finds herself with a different family, school, friends, home and a new name. The verses written during this time are one woman s exploration of her raw, emotional responses to dramatic life changes. This is Sonya's story. Call Me Sonya Grey

Knowing how theraputic poetry can be, I read with an open mind. I really loved reading it, and with each poem, I could feel whatever emotion Sonya felt when writing. I notice she had mostly painful memories, as the majority of poems were quite somber.
I absolutely loved Poem 17, Face. My favorite in the book, by far. I also thought the second version of April Walk was much better. The only poem I had mixed feelings about was, Poem 53. It was a fantastic poem, but the nature of it was immensely sad, and I found my heart wrenched.
All-in-all, if you like poetry, then you will love this little book! A huge recommendation from me!

This book made me thought and reflect about life the grey almost shadowy cover that made it looked like a memory, its magazine like pages, the content that's unique on its own dated back and forth through her childhood.Indeed it's very painful when you lose someone very dear to you it seems like your world stopped but in reality the world don't stop for anyone you have to move on and go on with your life it's hard but you'll get by.I like how every poem made its point or simply just conveying raw emotions at the moment page 49 titled Questions strikes me the most along with page 19,like a leaf and 41,the written word I can relate to some of it,imagined most, saw what it's like, empathizes with the whole content this made me reassess everything about me and other stuff I guess through this experiences will make us stronger and more determined in life.Thank you so much Sonya for sharing your story.
