The Urban Preppers Disaster Survival Hand Book was the result of the concern James has for his 90 year old mother that lives 12 short miles from a nuclear power plant that was constructed on an earth quake fault in the middle of prime wild-fire country. In his spare time, James loves to play with his dogs, grow vegetables and travel to exotic ports to experience new cultures, scuba dive and take under photography.

While the author sounded a bit like a nut job at the beginning of the book, and while I do think some of his stuff is overboard, that is the norm for the prepper culture anyway, and after reading the book, I found it to be very comprehensive and well thought out.
He covers survival skills for everything from power outages to tornadoes, drought, volcanoes, pandemics, terrorist hazards and more.
He includes instructions for people with pets, children, and the elderly.
I learned that in a pinch, you can pour some olive oil in a bowl, float a wick in it and it will make a nice light source.
There are a lot of links in the book and since I have it on my kindle, I found the links to be a bit frustrating because I kept accidentally opening them when I went to turn the page. On the other hand, I now know that there is a web site that lists all of the active volcanoes in the world. I am not near any of them.
If you want a very comprehensive prepping book then this is the book for you.

This little gem may very well be the best deal on Amazon. Tons of useful information that everyone should know, but if you live with your family (or pets) then this is definitely a MUST read.

Compared to the other prepper books found on Amazon, this book is a gem. It incorporates just about everything you will find on building a Bug Out Bag, Barter Goods, Personal Hygiene, Clothes, Communications, Having enough gas to get to your Bug Out Location if you have one. It is more comprehensive than most books on Amazon. I read it in one day and will be reading it again tomorrow because it has good advice. Yes, it is full of Amazon.com links, and some may not appreciate that. However, having links gives the serious reader a price range for something they may need. I also appreciated the section on bugging out with animals and the links for the Dog Emergency Survival Kit.

Funny, well written, and very well organized look into spending (more than the normal) 72 hours with your family and loved ones in the wake of a SHTF moment of time. If I could make one (.5) note against it: way too long for the subject matter and there is a lot of rehash per chapter, but otherwise recommended.

Good book, and EXTREMELY thorough. It even had tips on how to survive a volcano eruption!

Preparations are necessary in this unpredictable world. There have been many recent natural disasters that have destroyed communities and cities. Urban Preppers is the ideal tool to have to establish a contingency plan for unforeseen threats. One of the main benefits of the book is it takes into consideration your pets. Chapters 63 to 66 covers the main topics that pet owners must encounter in the face of disaster. As a pet owner myself, I appreciate this information.
The information provided in the book is elaborate. There are chapters about hurricanes, tornadoes and earthquake. I also love chapter 36 which recommends the best foods for long term storage. I like the idea that the book covers the basics and also expounds on other scenarios that may arise.

I received this book for free via the Goodreads First Reads Program.
This book was very educational. Even though I don't actually live in an urban area, I still was able to glean knowledge from this book. It shows what foods you should have around, how to deal with a wildfire, what kind of fuel you should have, and other very important things regarding survival.
It actually is a very useful book, even if you aren't an urban prepper with kids, pets and parents!

A good introduction to a complex subject. Well-written and thorough introduction to prepping; it contains a lot of information in an easy to use format. Well worth purchasing. The admonition in the book is adequately solid and avoids pitfalls of giving admonition on advancing areas like accoutrements and alone touches agilely on political issues. Over all this book provides a great overview.

James Mushen has written a book full of tips for any disaster scenarios that can occur. Many people's first thought might be "that not going to happen to me", but I prefer to be prepared for the unexpected. Highly recommended.

This book provides practical, easy-to-understand and carefully thought-out advice on what real people, like you and me, can do now to prepare for an emergency.
Most people don't expect an emergency to happen in their lives. But, with the increase in the frequency and intensity of severe weather events and natural disasters, the chances of finding oneself in an emergency is much greater than it used to be.
So many people are caring for children and elderly (or disabled) family members. This further complicates the task of preparing for an emergency situation. Advance preparation is vital. This book helps with all these things.
Some books are considered guilty pleasures... I feel guilty I didn't read "Urban Preppers" sooner!

The "Urban Prepper with Kids, Pets & Parents" is a very well written practical guide to preparing for most conceivable disaster situations. We are somewhat causal preppers since we live in an area that is prone to being snowed in and we have lost power for days at a time, so we have planned to be self-sufficient for upwards of a week. Having read a lot of books on prepping, some with very bad advice, we have put together strategies for staying in our house and another if we should have to leave for an extended period. This book is an excellent starting place for those beginning to think about prepping and there is quite a bit here for even experienced preppers.

I've read a few articles and Prepper books and none of them spelled it out quite as well as "Urban Preppers with Kids, Pets & Parents". Most of the other books seemed written by mountain men which really isn't where we urban folk are coming from. Yes, some of the basic tips can be taken from a mountain man skill set but the most important thing to have is a plan. Without a plan, no amount of skills can even be utilized.
This book reveals that plan, how to prepare for contingencies we hadn't anticipated and how to follow through for the overall survival of our families and pets.
Get this book and be prepared like you never dreamed you could be.

Good, but nothing too special.
This is an easy to read, useful, and practical book full of good information. However, while it does go into very good detail about multiple events and circumstances, it seems to be relatively common sense stuff that seems to have been copied and pasted over and over again throughout the book in order to fill the pages.
Overall, plus three stars for the organization of information and practicality of most of the tips. Good starter book to add to a new collection.

Urban Preppers is an outstanding book to read mainly because it has the ultimate advice for survival of past and present events that have happened or could happen. I love how it lays out scenarios or situations that occurred step by step.
This is a great book for kids also because it will teach them different techniques on how to handle the ways of life and how they should react to unfortunate possible accidents or natural disasters.

I got this book as a gift from my husband on our Anniversary. I am book reader and I read all book related to education, politics, and biographies. Knewing my interest my Husband gave me this excellent book. It covers complete detail of Urban areas and It shows what foods you should have around, how to deal with a wildfire, what kind of fuel you should have, and other very important things regarding survival.

Urban Preppers is a great book for everyone, but especially those looking for info on how to prepare for all sorts of unforeseen events and disasters. From biological threats to winter storms, this book is a comprehensive storehouse of disaster prep information. It contains all sorts of facts and is really an excellent buy. I'd recommend it -- you never know when it will come in handy.

I haven't read the entire book but from the first few areas of discussion, I can tell this is going to be quite a unique but very enjoyable read. I'm afraid to admit that I'm not the most practical person and some guidelines on surviving natural disasters and the like is something that's beneficial for me. I may just live a bit longer thanks to this guide. Awesome!

I loved this book it is a very detailed, well-thought out book about disaster preparedness. The book addresses preparing to meet your basic needs of food, water, shelter, heat, and personal protection. It then provides advice for surviving most conceivable disasters, including natural and unnatural (man made) varieties.

This book is highly detailed in what to do in what to do in a disaster. I couldn't take what I was reading seriously at first but as the book progressed, it became very eye-opening.
Being ready in any situation is very important in this world especially when you have a a family. You need to know what to do in a disastrous situation. Its a very practical and easy to understand book.

Above average. As with many of these books, I felt like an outright socialist while reading the first chapter. (Apparently, American conservative is quite a few leaps to the right from a Canadian conservative.) However, otherwise, it is quite good with lots of practical and very detailed advice. I now feel very prepared for many an emergency that would never happen in suburban Toronto.

This is a great book! Mr. James did a fantastic job with it! Even if you don't believe in the ending of the world or en eminent Doomsday you should still read this book! It has some very valuable information and readiness tips. I thoroughly enjoyed it!!

I totally love prepper books, and this one hit the nail on the head. It helps you learn how to prepare for just about any type of event you can think of. But the book can't do the work for you, you have to do the work after reading, but it certainly gets you ready.
