When family problems push Riley Middleton into giving up a percussion scholarship in another state and attending college from home, her friends push her to try out for a local rock band. Of course, Riley makes the band. She rules at the drums.

Riley soon finds out rock bands have a different dynamic than marching bands, especially when each of her male band mates has a major ego and is a major player. Two of them relentlessly flirt with her. The other—a dark, sexy rock god she can’t help being attracted to— is a total jerk and pushes her to quit. She becomes determined to ignore his rudeness and his hotness. Even if she was interested in jerks, a hook up would probably get her booted out of the ego-ridden band, and playing keeps her sane. Behind the drums, the world and its troubles evaporate.

If she wants to stay in the band, Riley needs to ignore the growing sparks between her and her band enemy. But as she gets to know the man behind the stage persona, ignoring him proves to be more difficult than flowing through a time sig shift.

I loved this!

“Love doesn’t always make sense. To the person in it or to the people around them. The falling can be an emotional, chaotic whirlwind. The landing jarring and eye opening. But if two people are really in love, there’s nothing in this world that can overcome it. Even if they can’t be together, love doesn’t cease.”

A girl drummer....thats something new to me....I've read books where the main female character is more of a tomboy than anything, but RILEY...Riley skate boards and plays drums :) Its definitely a good kind of different.

I loved Romeo, haha, I couldn't help it. I love my men tall, dark, and handsome :)
He was patient, and caring, [except when he was acting like an asshole] and smart, and sexy as hell, and yummy.....*sigh*

Yes, definitely liked it. This was another book I randomly saw on my feed and decided to check it out on a whim. Glad I did!! I really did enjoy it.

Genre: New Adult, College-age
Steam: Mild

Riley Middleton has given up a percussion scholarship out of state, made the choice to attend the local college while living at home, and pretty much singlehandedly runs the household. Riley's parents are filing for divorce. While her father is already engaged to another woman, her mother is an emotional mess. Missing the beat of the drums, as it has always provided her escape, Riley tries out for a local college band, and makes it. The lead guitarist, Romeo, acts like a complete jerk and makes it obvious he's trying to get her to quit. Riley is determined to ignore his rudeness, and the small spark that leaps between them, in order to keep her place in the band. As she gets to know Romeo, however, his true personality shines through, and she knows that resistance is futile. With her family life falling apart around her, Romeo is everything good and right in her world. But, when things worsen at home, and choices have to be made, what will become of their newfound love?

Most people who know me, know that I am a HUGELY CRAZY fan of rock star/rock band stories. It's an illness, frankly:) So, when I read the summary for In The Band, it was a no-brainer that I would read and review it. I figured, unless there were serious problems, I was going to walk away pretty pleased. And, I did! In The Band is fun, easy to read, and there are a few aspects that I really enjoyed about this book. So, let's start with those.

Riley is an endearing character from the start. She loves her mom and, especially, her little sister so very much. She takes on most of the everyday burdens of running a house and raising an eight-year-old sister after her parents split up. Riley is also doing her best to keep her mother going while she's in the midst of depression. I felt deeply for Riley, and thoroughly enjoyed every time she entered her zone and KILLED IT playing drums with the band!

Romeo, after a rocky start, showed himself to be a sincere, serious and wise individual. Past hurts have allowed him to grow and see life in ways many twenty-one-year-olds might not. He respects love and commitment, and that was truly a nice thing to see. Plus, the boy plays just about every instrument AND writes songs. THAT is hot!

Riley and Romeo, together, have a lovely connection. They take things slowly, and encounter some hurdles, but, ultimately they fall very much in love. This is young love at its best. Toward the very end of In The Band, particularly, there are some great scenes between these two.

To me, what makes this a 4-star book rather than a 5-star is one of the very things I loved about it. Riley begins to come across as just a little bit too much of a martyr. Honestly, I admire her for her selflessness, but it made less of a positive impression on me the more she kept on. It did not add to the story.

Speaking of the story, I have to mention, my only other issue is the fact that there are some obvious, though not overwhelming, spelling and grammar errors.

In the end, Jean Haus does a great job with In The Band! If you love a good musician/band book as much as I do, I say give this one a try. Hopefully we'll see more from this author in the future!

'In The Band' is like a great mash-up of other books that I love: 'Easy' by Tammara Webber, Gayle Forman's 'Where She Went'. Finally, there's 'Five Flavors of Dumb' by Antony John. There's college dorms, hot and angsty guys, dysfunctional band dynamics, family and school financial problems, and a feisty female MC whose musical passion and talent drives the men who adore them into tortured despair. Lol!

So yes, while the plot is all too familiar, I still enjoyed this book. A LOT. It's a great YAR and tugged at the heart strings just right. Jean Haus' writing style is similar to Tammara Webber and Nyrae Dawn, two YA authors I admire. And that makes her a new fave author!

Why is love such a cluster fuck?

This was an impulse buy. Amazon suggested it in an email, I clicked the link, read the blurb that included the words dark, sexy rock god and was sold. Those are dangerous words you know. Its so sad how easily persuaded I am. Seriously. I have issues. lol. Anyhow, I was very impressed with this book and enjoyed it very much. I initially thought this book was going to full of angst and drama, but I was wrong, well…at least on the angst part. The story turned out to be much than I had originally bargained for.

I’ll keep giving and giving. My mother and sister are worth the giving.

Riley has just given up her scholarship; her dream. Now is not the time to go off to college and leave her mom and sister. Her parents are going through a divorce. To add salt to the wound, her father is already in a serious relationship with a woman ten years younger than her mom. Yea, her mom is not taking this divorce very well. Riley has now officially become the surrogate parent for her little sister. The only time she feels free is when she’s playing the drums.

She recently auditions for a college band and they are immediately taken with her. Her talent on the drums is undeniably brilliant. Of the three male band mates, one is adamant to not let her in the band. His name is Romeo and he’s going to do everything in power to make her quit.

Why is it if a person looks like they stepped off the cover of a magazine, they’re usually a certified dickhead.

Romeo knows letting a girl like Riley into his band is just asking for trouble. He can just see it now. His band mates flirting with her, vying for her attention. She’s sexy and extremely talented on the drums. Again, she’s like some rock goddess come to life behind the set. I can feel my temple pounding to her beat as Sam and Justin continue to peek at her in awe. She’s going to tear his beloved band from the inside out, especially since he feels an attraction to her the likes in which he hasn’t felt like in a very long time. Oh yea. This girl is going to cause trouble.

“It’s not too hard to hold someone who’s already caught.” ~ Romeo

This story was, at times, a little heartbreaking. Poor Romeo. Yes, he was a douche to Riley, but his behavior was based on the wrong assumption. After finally coming to the realization that his attraction to Riley couldn’t be contained, he’s willing to give them a chance. After learning of his past, when he falls for someone, he falls hard. I commend Riley and her selflessness, but part of me wonders at what cost is her martyrdom? She deserves a life, too. Her bitterness to her dad and girlfriend, her responsibility to her mother and sister, and to her commitment to the band: She’s being pulled apart. How much longer before it tears her and Romeo completely apart?

To wait and love wisely.

This story had a little added depth that I liked, a lot. I could not put it down and basically read it one setting. There were some parts where Riley’s martyr tendencies were driving me a little bonkers. She deserved happiness and Romeo made her happy. She was just so darn stubborn and it broke my heart for Romeo. Ugh! The drama! Gotta love it, you know? I would consider this a mature YA, even though the hanky panky between the H/h were on the light side. I so wanted more from them. I was craving it actually. But alas, my mind was left to wander. Oh well, I still really liked it and would definitely recommend it.

O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo? (~ ̄▽ ̄)ノ

*swoons*

I love this book as much as I lololo-love musical instruments! I can totally relate to Riley and her passion for music!

I know this could be your typical "girl trying out for a band ⇨ guy is going to hate her ⇨ they're going to hate each other ⇨ they'll fall inlove anyway" book but hey, the writing, the depth, and the chemistry of the characters can make a huge difference to the story. I dare say "In the Band" has done a great job in all these elements.

“I hate that shit, people breaking up because they can’t do long distance relationships. Like did he date you last year because it was convenient or something?”

I couldn't believe these words actually came from the almost-antagonist character, Kendra. Man, the girl can analyze. Why do people break up when the road gets tougher? How can you ever trust yourself to someone who sticks with you only when things are smooth-sailing and easy?

You see, this book has a swoon-worthy (with dripping sex allure) romance story and so much more.

Riley and Romeo will make you fall inlove and giddy, Riley's parent will open your eyes to the causes and effects of divorce, and the characters with bad reputations will prove you wrong. I really enjoyed reading this book!!! ☺

"The falling can be an emotional, chaotic whirlwind. The landing jarring and eye opening. But if two people are really in love, there’s nothing in this world that can overcome it. Even if they can’t be together, love doesn't cease."

Let me just tell you that I'm not really digging the title of this book plus the cover, thus, I became hesitant on reading this. But, I learned that one should not judge a book by it's cover (or title) 'coz Holy shit was this an awesome read! Why? Because ROCKSTARS duh! What I love about this the most is that the hero is not your typical drinker/smoker/manwhore-type. He's not just a musical genius, he also is a GENIUS, like literally. I can say he's perfect. The heroine is a badass drummer who attracts a lot of guys, I just don't like her tolerating her mother and all that martyrdom shit, but overall, I enjoyed reading this. Not a dull moment.

Some of my favorite quotes:

"Nothing else matters when I’m with you. You’re like a drug to me. I always crave more. I feel alive and euphoric when we’re together. I feel free. I feel like the person I always wanted to be."

"Riley, I’ll let you have whatever you want.”

"I just want you."

"You’ve had me for a long time."

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

This is another excellent example of the value of "New Adult" as its own category/genre. It's full of all the angst and passion and purpose of that age but without drama for its own sake and with characters who are honest, kind, and struggling to do their best as the realities of an adult world assert themselves.

I particularly like Riley. Her situation sucks as she takes on the role of functional caretaker while the adults around her descend into petty selfishness. Jean Haus deals with some weighty issues (depression, divorce, and neglect) but with a light enough touch that they don't obliterate the story. Some of that is Riley's determination and grit. And some of that is her having the release of her drumming and the friendships she develops through it. Her world isn't all dreary (though it feels that way, sometimes) and you can see that she's honestly doing her best to survive and drag those she cares about with her.

I have a lot less sympathy with Romeo. And yeah, that's a stupid name to give a romantic hero. I don't care if it's his last name since everybody is using it as if it's his only name—particularly Riley. I literally cringed occasionally when Riley would use his name. And yes, I'm using "literally" correctly. But it also doesn't help that he's kind of a jerk. The amazing thing is that I didn't end up hating him. Haus has real talent with characters at this age. You could see, eventually, the depth of his emotion and come to understand that his biggest jerkwad moments were part of his deeper turmoil and emotional inexperience and insecurities. Better, you could see his passions for his band and for Riley and how they tied his greatest strengths to his greatest insecurities.

The only thing keeping this from five stars is that every guy in the book was a jerk, at least part-time. Marco (the friend-zoned) was exasperating but Riley's dad was worse. It didn't quite come off as a statement of general gender bias, but it was a close thing. If Riley hadn't turned out so very stellar in the end, it might have been bad, indeed.

So a solid four stars for an excellent NA story with great characters. I hope the rest of the series is as good (or even close).

A note about Steamy: A bit low on my personal scale, but significant. There's no actual explicit sex as such, but there's frank discussion and enough playing around as makes no difference.

Really three and a half stars because while I liked the premise of this book and overall I thought it not only flowed well and was believable, I still had some issues with it.

Some of the supportive characters (Marcus and Chloe) started off strong but then seemed to fade into the background as Riley's interest in Romeo grew. This could have been done intentionally to demonstrate how sometimes when falling in love people can overlook other relationships but I felt like more could have been done to work them into the story line, especially near the end when things seem to come to a head with them and you're left wondering if they actually worked through their crap.

The conflict with Riley's family was good. Sometimes with stories in this genre that type of broken/breaking family dynamic can feel forced and overdone. In this case I thought Haus nailed it, especially with Riley's mom and her descent into depression. Her need to step into her mother's neglected role and her anxiety about leaving her and her little sister alone were completely understandable to the reader.

The only part that irritated me was the end and how much she was in her head about how things were left with her and Romeo. It seemed like it took her too long to snap out of it. I also didn't like that Riley stopped drumming. It seemed a little antiquated, like it's perfectly understandable for a girl to give up her life dreams when she meets the right guy.

I’ve had my eye on this book for a while. I love rock star books, so I’m a sucker as soon as I see “band”. I had gone back and forth on it (even though it sounded good) for at least a month, then I saw that the price dropped! As you can imagine, I snatched it up immediately.

I was hooked immediately. I loved Riley’s connection to music and drums. I can honestly say, I know how she feels.

Romeo…Romeo…(wherefore art thou Romeo?)…Lol, he definitely left me asking that through the first half of the book. He was definitely a jerk. But…jerks can be so much fun to read. Especially when they break from their jerkiness and show that they aren’t all bad. And fortunately, Romeo did do that…multiple times. I loved how confused Riley got when Romeo broke from his jerk mold and was sweet to her younger sister. Also, when she had a family emergency and Romeo took care of her…It just made me completely love him. :)

This was such an enjoyable book. I was actually cursing sleep when I couldn’t stay awake any longer to read. This book will definitely be a re-read for me.

This was a sweet heart warming love story. I found my self tearing up so many times. Romeo is probably the most refreshing and loyal book boyfriend out there. He really got a bad rap in the beginning. I loved how these two grew to know each other and really pealed back the layers to who they were on the inside. The story dealt with real life problems and all the thigns that young adults go through in this day and age. Riley was so mature and loved her family with everything in her. She made so many sacrifices for them and never felt bitter except for when her mom deserved a kick in the butt. She stood by her mom though and her love is really what held this family together.
Romeo was so endearing to me. His "one month rule" and the truth about how he treated women just touched my heart. His past and everything he went through just made him stronger and the kinda guy who would stand by Riley through everything. Even when she pushed him away.

They were both so right for each other and I loved every sweet moment. Might not have been up there with all the sizzling reads but the heartfelt message and love story stood on it's own. The intense make out sessions though....they were really really good. :)
I'm looking forward to some more heat when I get to Justin's book. After all they say those bad boys usually got that way doing some really "good" things.

This was really great! I think my favorite thing about it is that it dealt with some sad things, but without the intense angstiness that so many of the new adults I've read have had. And no DARK SECRETS that the narrator constantly hints at, but takes forever to tell you!

The relationship was nice and HOT. And I don't know. I just liked it. Would read more by the author, I think.

DNF. Surprisingly, I can't say I hated this. The writing was serviceable and the protagonist's problems realistic and authentic given her age (18? 19?). A musician myself, I can totally relate to Riley's love of music and her choice of instrument--drums--was a nice snub of gender norms.

In the Band, however, is a case study in terrible parenting and overblown martyrdom. As a book that's been sitting, unread, on my Kindle for years, it didn't rate 300+ pages of irritation.

Riley is a starting her first year at a local college, even though she had a very sweet scholarship deal, out of state. But her father has recently left her mother, mother is depressed, and Riley's kid sister needs a babysitter. So Riley turns down the music scholarship so she can stay home and play mom to her kid sister and useless mom.

At one point Riley explains that if she went away to college, kid sister would have to spend several nights a week with a babysitter. Oh, the horror! *Rolls eyes.* Oy, vey, talk about First World problems.

I'm not feeling Mom's plight. Yeah, yeah, depression-smession-sadness-cakes. Thing is, I'm all too familiar with the black beast (with a soupcon of chronic illness), but I take better care of my animals than this woman does of her kids. Even on my darkest days, I drag ass out to the barn, three times a day, seven days a week, in all weather, to feed, exercise, and otherwise care for a horse. The fact that Riley's mother (and Dad) would allow (tacitly encourage) Riley to throw away a great scholarship, establishes both as suck-ass parents. Mom is a selfish bitch, but Dad, largely absent in the story, is a dick-weed for not taking responsibility and making sure his progeny gets a chance at a good education and career.

Riley, meanwhile, has a major martyr complex. Devotion to family is wonderful, but pissing away your future to enable your worthless mother's whinging is just stupid. Riley's reaction to the situation reads true; true to the perceptions of a very young woman. But seen through the eyes of someone much older, her "sacrifice" is an act of stubborn stupidity, and not nobility. Even more aggravating is that when Riley eventually realizes that her needs are important, this revelation is driven solely by her "love" of a boy.

In other words, she never looks around and says, "Pull yourself together, Mom. I'm following my dreams because I deserve it!" Nope. Instead, the only thing that motivates her is the "need" of a man. She needs Romeo (ugh, that name) and therefore his wuv is what drives her to claim something for herself. This struck me as an unhealthy message for young women.

Two stars rather than the usual DNF one star, because...curiously, I didn't hate this.

In the Band by Jean Haus

This is the first time I have read anything by Jean Haus and she is an amazing author, this book In the Band was fantastic. Jean writing is easy to read, the characters are great, and this is one of those books you don’t put down till you’re at the end.

In The Band is about a young woman named Riley Middleton who has to give up her dreams of going to college and playing in the school’s marching band. Her mother is struggling, her father has left for a much younger woman and Riley needs to help take care of her sister. Riley attends a local college and has a few great friends who try to help out as much as they can, but you can feel that she is struggling at times and you feel for her. Then her friend suggests Riley auditions to become a drummer in a band. Well it’s not a marching band but Riley goes and tries out. Did I mention Riley is a talented drummer and of course you may guess what happens next?

Riley starts practicing with the band, she knows that a two of her band mates are thrilled she is there, but there is that guitar player Romeo who tells her straight out he is going to do everything in his power to get her to quit. Riley can’t believe this guy is such a jerk, and decides she will do anything to prove him wrong. But even though she can’t stand him there is an attraction to him and of course knows she has to push through that and ignore the jerk. Romeo is swoon worthy and as the reader you can’t wait to see how this all plays out!

This story is about love, loss, moving on and making new dreams. Jean Haus has written a fantastic story and I cannot wait to read more of her writing.

I have rated In the Band 5 stars and recommend anyone who enjoys the new adult genre to go ahead and purchase this novel they will not be disappointed.

i'm seriously doing a happy dance right now :D I absolutely loved this book. I couldnt put it down!

I loved Riley and how much she loved her family, enough so she sacrificed her future to be there for them. She had so much potential and yet she blossomed where she ended up. She was such a strong character that you cant help but root for her.

As much as Riley does for her family her home life really sucks. In order to keep a bit of her sanity she decides to try out for a local band. The band hears her talent and reluctantly the band leader Romeo says yes to bring her on.

Romeo has reservations about bringing this chick into their fold. Not because she's bad because she's amazing and beautiful and he cant take his eyes off of her. But he sees her as a crutch to bring the band down.
Romeo is so enamored by her and that scares him. He's vowed to do everything in his power to get rid of her. Their power struggles turns into something they never expected. Something blooms between the two and they cant help but be drawn to each other.

Will their connection be enough to stay together or will reality bite them in the ass?

Holy... This is just awesome. I don't even know what to say... *thinks hard* Hmmmm... I'll just go and enumerate why I like this book a lot.

One... MUSIC. I've been looking for a story with music in it. I'm getting hooked with books that has that kind of genre. I like music, who doesn't? I always wanted to learn to play guitar. Always bugged my bf to teach me how. But never got to learn it really well cause I'm not patient. :P

Two... Drummer... I keep on mentioning that I really like drummers. I really have a thing with drummers. Although in this case, it's a girl who played the drums and she totally ROCKED it. It makes me love drummers more. I've been having that dream where I'll buy that Drum Mania machine for my house and so I could play drums there. LOL. :P

Three... Guitarist. also known as Romeo. OMG. He's a bit dark and brooding, jerk (a bit), sweet, perfectionist, slave driver, HOT, talented and boy genius. Damn. What more could you ask for?

Overall, yes, I love it. Even the issues with Riley's mom and family. :)

I really loved Romeo :)

Male Character : Romeo was a rock god, and so sweet underneath it all. Totally crush worthy Book Boyfriend.

Female Character : Ridley was also a great character, she was selfless...nearly too much so at times. But overall she was really likeable :)

Storyline : It was great to have a girl being the drummer in a rock band. As opposed to a groupie etc.

Surrounding characters : I loved Chloe, she was great BFF & I would love to read more about her & Marcus. The guys in the band I don't feel like I really got to know.

POV : All Riley's which was perfectly fine place to be :)

Series cont : Yes :)

Note to self: When you start a book by Jean Haus, you need to be prepared for the fact that once you have started, you won't be able to put the book down until you have finished, so everything else in your life will become non existent.

Whenever I open my emails and find an email from Jean asking me to review one of her books, I have this little buzz going on for days and the urge to push it to the very top of my review list is so strong simply because I love the style in which she writes and her books are always full of amazing characters!!

Riley Middleton is such a strong, self sacrificing person. Giving up her college percussion scholarship to stay at home to be the support that her mother and sister need. She has slowly become the cook, cleaner and caregiver. But drumming runs deep within her veins!! Eventually she is convinced by her friends Marcus and Chloe to try out for the spot of drummer in the band Luminescent Juliet.

While the singer is eye candy, the guitar player is walking lust. Dark hair. Dark eyes. Muscled body in a tight, dark tank top. Everything’s dark about him except the small, silver hoops lining his ears. The girls waiting behind him practically pant.

In the band should have come with a warning... Contains one incredibly hot, inked, guitar playing rock god who you will swoon over, lust after and fall in love with!! Romeo is such a deep character and he is far from being the typical what you see is what you get rock star. I didn't think I could love him more but then he played the fiddle and had a love for Mumford & Sons, which happens to be my favourite band!! So from this point on, it's going to be pretty hard to top the perfection of Romeo in my eyes!!

But this is no love at first sight romance. Riley and Romeo can barely stand to be in the same room as each other and Romeo makes it his mission to get Riley to quit the band. But the attraction and sexual tension between the two of them is pretty hot!!

This book is not all happy romance, make out sessions, music and hot band members!! No, this book deals with some pretty tough issues. Between what Riley is dealing with on a daily basis and what Romeo has clawed his way back from... These are characters who have flaws. Characters who make mistakes and mess up. But they are characters who you will fall in love with!!!

Reading a Jean Haus book is my happy place! In The Band is another amazingly well written book!! And as with everything else of Jean's that I've read I will be reading In The Band again and again!!!

5 Fantastic, Amazing Stars!!!

-LOVE, LOVED THIS QUOTE! ♥

The good: Fast and easy read. The writing is very simple and to the point and the plot is decently thought out and executed. I also appreciated the fact that the female heroine is very strong willed and the male heroine is generally your guy next door beneath all of that rock star persona.

The bad: I wouldn’t necessarily call this bad but didn’t it at times feel as though Romeo was way too perfect? He seemed too unreal for this world! LOL.

If anything though, the main and only thing that lacked for me was the ending. It was too abrupt and rushed. I felt that there could have been more but it is what it is, so yeah.

My thoughts: First off, I LOVED the main guy’s name!! Romeo, how perfect!! It makes me want to shout, “Romeo, where art thou Romeo?”! Very cute.

I was actually surprised in how much I liked this book. Generally, I like New adult rock star romances but this one I was a bit “iffy” and on the fence at first for some reason.

I guess what it comes down to, is that when I think of rock star romances, I think of lots of erotica and hooking up with random girls and groupies. The main guy is supposed to be this womanizer but there was no evidence of it throughout the entire story.

SO, my verdict:

Yes, I would recommend to others!

Romeo’s relationship with Riley was very unique and interesting. They're characters are undeniably 'real' and their background stories are very heartbreaking and honest. I loved their banter and chemistry as well as their interactions with the band as well.

As a blogger now signed to be part of the “Ink My Heart (Luminescent Juliet, #2) ” book tour, I am now curious and excited to see the leader of Luminescent Juliet, Justin's, fall!! Until then, I will be patiently awaiting my ARC in my email!! Hehe. I can't wait!!

In the Band is the story of Riley, a band geek drummer turned rock star. Riley is also very selfless, smart, family oriented, a good friend, and a strong female. I really liked her character.
Riley had worked really hard in high school and landed a full scholarship to attend college in Virginia. But when her mother falls into a deep depression from her parent’s divorce, Riley selflessly give’s up everything for her family and is left with the responsibility of taking care of her 8 year old sister, Jamie as well as the entire household while trying to attend the local college. Upset about having to give up her dream her two friends Marcus and Chloe encourage her to try out for a local band, Luminescent Juliet, who are looking for a drummer.
She joins Marcus at one of the bands performances dead set on not trying out even if she likes them. She is only there satisfying her friends. But she ends up really liking them and decides in the end to try out after all. She wants to drum even if that means it’s in a band with these boys. Obviously she makes the band; the title of the book says it all. Tryouts are not as smooth as she thought they would be considering she has the band member, Romeo being a dick about her trying out. Even though she is obviously the most talented drummer there, Romeo makes her joining difficult. The band practices are no better. Riley and Romeo have a very heated rocky relationship and no matter how big of a dick he is to her she can’t help but be attracted to him. She hates that she feels this way. But when some family issues happen that has her world plummeting to the ground again she starts to see a different side of Romeo.
The weight of Riley’s world soon becomes too heavy for her shoulders. She is angry and frustrated at her parents for putting this responsibility on her because they can’t deal with their divorce like adults. She has given so much up, her dreams, her college of choice, her time, and most of all, she has just about given up any kind of life she can have for herself. She is drowning in her family’s drama and is desperate to grasp onto anything to keep just for her.
I really liked the book and I loved Romeo and Riley’s relationship and how it slowly progressed. I’m glad I bought the book and I can’t wait to read the next one. I hate it doesn’t come out until November. It is just so damn far away!

When Riley auditions as a drummer for Romeo’s band, sparks fly…

This is the first ‘rock star’ book I’ve read and really loved. Usually I find the characters are too over the top or out of control for me, but I think Jean Haus found the middle ground. In fact–I think her characters are more ‘grounded’ in general.

Let’s start with Riley. I loved Riley’s loyalty to her sister. She wanted what was best for her, even at the cost of her own happiness. This story starts out with Riley giving up her scholarship to a college she desperately wanted to go to, to play in a marching band she’d dreamed of playing in, all so she can stay home and take of her little sister and mother. Right off the bat, that made me like her. And I kept liking her more and more as the book progressed. She was level headed and confident and someone I could easily picture myself being friends with.

Romeo…he was so appropriately named. Though he seemed to be a hard ass, Romeo was a romantic when it came right down to it. I loved his history and how much he loved his family. And I love that when he realized his feelings for Riley, he was all in. His unwavering support and determination to see them together was irresistible.

My least favorite part of this book was Riley’s parents. She was more mature than they were, and the choices they were making were so frustrating. I just wanted to shake some sense into them. Oddly enough, the most mature adult in Riley’s life was her father’s girlfriend.

I do have to say…I missed the sex in this book. The connection between Romeo and Riley was so intense. They were so damn hot together. I can imagine what their first time between the sheets was like, but I really would have liked to read it. In the end, though, it just wasn’t enough for me to take away the star. The story was fantastic. I think it helps that my one of my favorite bands–Skillet–has a kick ass female drummer!

I loved this book. I think one of the things I really enjoyed was the fact that both characters had interests outside of the band. Their lives didn't revolve around it. They were both well rounded characters who had more going on in their lives than each other.

Highly recommended if you are looking for a quick, sweet read!

3.5/5 stars

After a night of sleep I just can't rate it any higher. I hate it when a story starts out very promising and then it just kind of fizzles out into nothing. I'm disappointed by this book.

It starts out with Riley. She tries out for a band, is - suprise suprise - a genius drummer and she gets chosen. There are three guys in the band with her - one of them is Romeo (horrible name, btw). He's a huge jerk to her at first, but his character get's better when you get to know him.

However his reasons for being such a jerk fall a bit short for me. I just don't think it's justified. When they get to know each other, I actually really liked them. But then some stuff happens and for whatever reason the just HAVE TO be apart - even though they're both miserable. I hate it when writers seperate the couple just to create drama and it was just a ridiculous reason.

The ending was way to rushed and I just didn't feel "it" anymore after all the drama. I felt like hitting Riley for the last 25% of the book. What's wrong with keeping people together and just having some sort of story outside of that? I just wish it was more original, as this just fell flat for me and I didn't care anymore how they ended things.

This is a real shame, because I did think the story had a lot of potential. It's a bit cliche, but it was a nice read until all the unneeded drama.

I think I won't be reading the next book, as I really didn't like Justin. So I'm not that excited to read an entire book about him.

3 sexy-drummer stars..!!

I went into his story expecting a lot. It may have been my fault but this book didn't meet my expectations. Loved the blurb! But the story was average.

The beginning 20% of the book was really good. I loved the initial relationship between Romeo and Riley. Liked their banter and the dynamic they got going. But as the story leads us it just fizzles out. It wasn't was I expected and it sort of became cold. There was the substance to attain to the soul deep love story the author was aiming for. All the scenes between them had me feeling something was left out. And trying to figure out Riley is an impossible job..!!

But, I did like Romeo. He was fresh and something unique. I loved and connected with his back story, where he came from. He was probably the only thing I loved in this book.!

Anyway, this was not your typical Rock star story. Romeo does carry the attitude but the story lacks the essentials.
3 stars for its humor and Romeo..!!

Genre: Young Adult Romance
Heat Barometer: 2 out of 5 stars

In the Band
, the perfect example of traditional young adult romance: sweet innocent love, angst, stupidity due to immaturity, more angst, and lots sexual frustration. What you also get with this story is a hot rocker/boxer as hero who has a strong sense of morals and a nasty attitude when he wanted to give it. There was depth in the plot and some real hardships and choices the Riley, the heroine had to deal with throughout because of her family situation...hence the angst. I enjoyed the book and it had me rooting loudly for Riley to succeed in the male rock and roll world. I can't get enough of these rocker story lines!!
