Story of how Mark Berry retraced the steps of Thomas Baines' trip across the Limpopo River in 1871 - from which the present day border crossing of Baine's Drift got its name - and discovered that an error in his chronometer meant that the real path covers was in fact some 50km to the west of what the records indicate. In order to validate the real path followed by Baines, Berry needs to find the 'Great Tree' a 65 foot diameter baobab described in Baines' diary. This book tells the story of that quest, including the comprehensive evidence carved into the tree that proves that the present day Baine's Drift was in fact never visited by Baines himself.
