Saige Buchanan travels the world studying her dark past, guided by a strange gift that enables physical objects to tell her their secrets. Yet nothing can protect her from her family's sadistic enemies. Until - in her hour of greatest need - she encounters a mysterious, impossibly sexy shape-shifter.
Sent to find the woman whose darkness has yet to awaken, Michael Quinn battles his primal hunger for Saige. He alone can help her lay claim to her full powers. Yet in doing so, he will destroy her innocence, and mark her as his forever....
Rhyannon Byrd is the national bestselling author of more than forty contemporary and paranormal romance titles, including the romantic thrillers LONDON AFFAIR and NEW YORK SCANDAL, and her books have been translated into ten languages. After years of enjoying the California sunshine, Rhyannon now lives in the beautiful Malvern Hills in England with her family and their ever-growing collection of concert T-shirts and coffee mugs.
Ok this was very, very lame. The storyline was identical to book 1. The lead female who is supposed to turn into this mighty creature called a Merrick still needs a big strong man to rescue her time after time again. She makes dumb decisions all the time. Most of the book she's begging to have sex which the male denies her (like that happens) because he has a past that has scarred him for life. Aren't we all over those men? Aren't we sick of them yet? And to top it all off the sex scene wasn't even that good. This book is two hours I will never get back.
Rhyannon Byrd is fast becoming very accomplished at writing the stubborn alpha hero and her efforts shine admirably in 'Edge of Danger'. Michael Quinn is a raptor shapeshifter and Watchman for the Consortium - a organization charged with the task of monitoring supernatural activity. But with the reemergence of a being so fierce and destructive, Quinn and his fellow Watchmen have decided to take action. Quinn's task: Go to Brazil, find Saige Buchanan and bring her back to the base in Colorado. Sounds easy enough but as Quinn will soon find out, nothing about Saige is easy.
Unlike her brothers, Saige has understood and accepted the radical changes in store for her. Her Merrick, the once dormant primal being that lurks beneath her surface, is awakening and with that awakening comes the knowledge that her will to live will soon be tested.
For centuries the Merrick genes have been dormant after their arch nemesis, the Casus, were banished into a metaphysical holding cell known as the Meridian. But now, something or someone is releasing the Casus from their prison. After years of isolation, the Casus are mere shades of their former self. As their shades are released from the Meridian, they overtake a human with Casus genes, forcing that humans soul from its body yet retaining their memories and thereby assimilating into the modern world with frightening ease.
With her awakening triggered, Saige knows that a Casus is searching for her and not only is the monster looking to avenge its centuries long imprisonment, but she soon discovers that it's looking for the Dark Markers as well. A brilliant anthropologist, Saige has been searching the globe for the mystical crosses that throb with power and protection. It helps that she has the power to read any object she touches and thereby glimpsing its past. After touching many different objects in her search, Saige finally discovered the first Dark Marker in Rome. Sending the Dark Marker on to her brother, Ian, Saige uses the maps that she also discovered at its location to search for the others. The maps are coded and only with her power was Saige even able to decipher the location of the second Dark Marker in Brazil. But when her Merrick senses come alive, Saige knows that the Dark Marker is in jeopardy and she devises a way to have it taken safely out of Brazil. Yet her journey home isn't destined to be easy.
Quinn is a dark mystery to both Saige and the reader. Ms. Byrd never let's us forget his gorgeous good looks and rasping deep drawl. The man oozes sexual energy and Saige is helpless as she hungrily soaks him up.
And it's not just her human psyche that sparks at Quinn's nearness, her Merrick is stirred up as well and Saige is soon spinning in desire. But it's her distrustful nature that provides her some measure of control. All the men in Saige's life have abandoned her in some way or another and despite the fact that she knows Quinn is a Watchman and is here to protect, her suspicious nature blurs her rational. Quinn's mysterious allure also doesn't help Saige's initial judgement of him either and she resolves quickly to escape but first she wants answers regarding her Merrick. While she has a vast knowledge of the Merrick and Casus, little is known of female Merricks and she wants to understand what her change will entail. Lucky for her, she doesn't Hulk out yet retains the amazing strength that surpasses any human but her need to feed the primal being within her requires fangs and Saige is more than interested in sinking them into Quinn.
A dark and tragic past weighs heavily on Quinn's soul. He was betrayed, tortured and forced to watch as his fiance was raped and executed at the hands of the Collective - a human organization bent on the task of eradicating the existence of all supernatural beings. Quinn will do anything to protect his broken heart even if he has to harshly push Saige away and hold her back at a vast distance. He'll not let her become part of his tragedy nor will he ever give her the opportunity to betray him. And while he wants her with a terrible fierceness that would surely scare her, Quinn will not bring himself to get close to her even when she begs. But his heart can't stay shielded forever and he's helpless against Saige's onslaught as she steadily chips away at his resolve.
Both Saige and Quinn are naturally distrustful creatures which allows for a lot of back and forth angst coupled with highly explosive sexual tension. Makes for great reading, in my opinion. Funnily enough, both are also highly protective of each other and find themselves in a couple of life threatening situations based on their need to protect the other even if it means lying to achieve the intended outcome. But when push came to shove, Saige proved to be the most courageous with her heart.
Yet when Quinn finally comes to realize that Saige is strong, that she can handle his dark possession and raging passions, he doesn't waste time.
I really enjoyed 'Edge of Danger'. While Quinn was a stubborn hero, he wasn't as frustrating as Ian from 'Edge of Hunger', which made falling in love with him much easier in comparison. I also loved how Ms. Byrd reminded me time and again of Quinn's melting sexuality. And there is just something about a hero asking the heroine if she can take him again. He's so desperate that one earth shattering session of hot sex simply won't be enough and he must have her again, immediately. Be still my hussy heart!
Saige was wonderfully refreshing as well. I love when a character already knows and understands the ins and outs of their supernatural abilities and better still, that they accept it. It gives the reader the opportunity to focus solely on the relationship between the H/h rather than read tedious monologues of their irrational fears with regards to their awakening powers. While Saige tended to throw herself at Quinn, I don't think she would have cracked his shields nearly as effectively if she held her heart from him. Quinn needed to be reassured time and again of Saige's desire. She certainly didn't make it easy for him to ignore her and really he found that he couldn't stay away even if he tried.
I'm also enjoying the over-reaching plots and my curiosity has definitely been piqued over the Collective and the corruption that's taking place within the ranks. Definitely some interesting surprises there. It appears as though the Watchmen's roles are not only be questioned but changed as well. These shapeshifters are brave as they are loyal and I can't wait to learn more about each of those sexy heart-throbs.
its sensual smooth, but cliched and bland. hmm its really polished its not exciting and it wont leave you hating or loving its five stars for those who want a safe good read with no power to dwar you in, but its excellent if you like soft romance thats, heres the word i wanted very SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPSAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.PY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPSAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.Y.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPSAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.PY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPSAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.Y.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPSAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.PY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPSAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.Y.SAPPY.SAPPY.SAPPY.
Michael Quinn is a rapter shifter and he's sent to recover Saige Buchannon from The Amazon, whom is out searching for an ancient artifact said to annihilate malevolent creatures out to destroy her family. She is part of an old magical bloodline, imbued with powers to destroy evil and her inner power- called The Merrick- is awakening.
Find her he does, and just in time too, for the ancient evil is all but on her. But the enemy has captured a good friend of hers she trusted with the artifact and now it'll take both Quinn's people and hers, working together, to recover them.
Despite the intriguing fact that Quinn is a rapter shifter- the characters never really drew me in. The heroine didnt have much of a personality and frankly, if it were not for her "magical bloodline" bit, would have had little appeal. Throw in a mediocre paranormal romance plot and, well... meh.
It wasn't bad- I read the entire thing, though skimmed often- just lacked something to spark my interest.
I've wanted to try this author for some time- now that I have, I'll probably not bother with anything more by her. ::shrug::
Another excellent read. Book 2 of the author's Primal Instincts stars Saige, the Buchanan sister who, unlike her brothers, has always been a believer in the legends of the Merrick and the Casus. She is also the one who found the first of the Dark Markers used in book 1. Now she has found the second, and the Casus [two of them this time, and one is the brother of the Casus killed by Ian and is out for revenge:] have found her.
The hero is Quinn, a Watchman shifter introduced in the first book. Like the first book the hero and heroine both have issues - they struggle mightily for most of the book before they finally get together. RB does stubborn tortured heroes very well...
Read in order, these books [at least 1 and 2 which I've read:] are very closely linked and sequential...
Primal Instinct 1. Edge of Hunger (2009) 2. Edge Of Danger (2009) 3. Edge of Desire (2009)
This series has potential, I like the storyline, I just cannot seem to connect with the characters!
I was very frustrated in this book because the main characters seemed to be fighting their attraction and kept going around in circles about why they couldn't be together for about 80% of the book!
I actually enjoyed the book more once we were able to read about something else other than them. The other characters seem to be building up to books I might actually enjoy since I do like them better.
I'm curious to see what happens next in this world.
I really liked Saige and her tough trying to protect everyone around her ways. She manged to pull that off while still being lovable. While Quinn on the other hand was too much the stereo typical male, fight my feelings, alpha male, jealous of everyone, and came off as an ass much of the time.
I did like learning a little more about the Casus and then also the Collective and what they are about. I was hoping for more info on the Watchmen, but there wasn't much of anything new with them.
Update 2020 Rating 3ish stars I was just searching the romance KU catalogue and came across this, been years since I read this series and I was craving some pnr so thought why not reread...its definitely not as great as I remember. The concept of it is definitely very interesting though, pretty unique but I guess over the years my expectations of the pnr world has grown exponentially and the romance in it.
This is an exciting book from start to finish. Although, I really liked the first book in this series I think this one kicked it up a notch. The main characters where both tough and vulnerable at the same time. I love it how the interacted throughout the story and I found I couldn't put it down. This is definately worth reading!
The Primal Instinct series by Rhyannon Byrd is built around the Merrick—an ancient race marked by primal power, dangerous awakenings, and a destiny that ties them to both salvation and ruin. Among them are the Watchmen, warriors whose purpose is to protect the Merrick from enemies outside and from the darkness within. Bound by duty and sacrifice, the Watchmen live at the edge of danger, carrying both physical scars and the weight of responsibility.
Their greatest foes are the Casus, an ancient evil that seeks to dominate and destroy, exploiting Merrick awakenings to unleash chaos. This ongoing struggle forms the spine of the series, threading every love story with a sense of larger, looming peril.
It is within this backdrop that Edge of Danger delivers another darkly sensual installment in Ms. Byrd’s paranormal world, centering on the reluctant pull between Michael Quinn and Saige Buchanan. Tasked with protecting Saige in South America, Quinn has no desire to be saddled with a responsibility that feels far too personal. Betrayed in the past and scarred inside and out, he hides behind walls of iron control—yet Saige, with her fire and determination, chips away at his defenses from the moment they meet.
Quinn is the quintessential tortured hero that Ms. Byrd writes so well. Shifter, protector, and loner, his ability to take to the skies makes him unique even among the Merrick, but it is his guarded heart and mistrust that sets the tone for the slow burn between him and Saige, who for her part, is no shrinking violet. Though she is the “protected” in this dynamic, she pushes back, her mix of strength and generosity proving a foil to Quinn’s cold reserve. It is her willingness to see him for more than his scars that slowly draws them together, even when he resists.
The tension between them is constant, Quinn fighting his attraction and Saige refusing to let him dismiss what simmers between them. His betrayal at the hands of his former fiancée leaves him wary of desire and intimacy, while Saige continues to test his reluctance to engage. Their journey is one of collision as much as connection, Quinn desperate to deny what his body and soul already know.
I loved how Byrd captured the essence of Quinn’s torment, making him a hero readers ache for even when his actions frustrate. Saige’s blend of innocence and tenacity balances his darkness beautifully, and her role as his emotional anchor gives the story its heart. Still, I found myself wishing the ferocity of their appetites translated more fully to the page; too much build-up at times kept the consummation from being as explosive as the tension promised, which really was disappointing.
For all that, Edge of Danger is classic Byrd: lushly written, emotionally fraught, and steeped in the ache of desire barely held at bay. The mythology of the Merrick deepens here, with threads of villainy evolving in ways that hint at bigger battles to come.
Recommended for: readers who love tortured heroes, paranormal romance with emotional punch, and heroines who are equal parts strength and heart.
Final Verdict: Dark, brooding, and beautifully tormented—Quinn and Saige’s story keeps you craving every page.
Really, these two are seriously annoying. I seriously found Saige just too stupidly annoying for most of this book. But in the second half, Michael/Quinn became just as annoying. I nearly DNF this due to Saige continually being way too idiotic in her thinking and actions. Then in the second half, her moaning mentality and sexual whining became tedious. She has accepted her Merrick side for years, has known/ believed about the Casus but acts as if she is not in danger.
SPOILERS AHEAD. First she throws a beer bottle at a stranger in a bar, then, when being attacked, drops her knife and acts all screamy girly. This is the same woman we are later told in chapter 18 has a solid background in self defence. Really, this author needs to write better characters or keep their abilities in check. By chapter 10 she was firmly in the TSTL category and I just didn’t care about her anymore. Arguing with Michael, instead of getting the hell outta dodge after he is injured having to save her AGAIN from the Casus. Then she does a complete about face in moments, going from lying/not trusting him all the time, to wanting Michael. Whiplash anyone. Michael is always fighting his feelings for Saige. Trying to be a gentleman but also held back by his past horror. The fact he trusts Saige’s word when she does nothing but lie, silly. Then he goes the opposite direction in not trusting her once she tells the truth. Though I feel he was right in his thinking. Then Saige doesn’t use her special power and read the paper McConnell passed over to see if he was lying. Then we get a major TSTL moment in chapter 19. The back story is intriguing but the characters themselves are appallingly annoying. I read the first two books many years ago and saw these were in KU. But I feel I’m done with this series after reading the next two books. Read through kindle unlimited.
This was a paranormal novel that has some cool factions and an interesting backstory. The two main characters have some good chemistry.
Everyone has different tastes, and this one was not to mine. Saige made really stupid decisions, even at the very end, which is annoying. It's like she learned nothing. And there were too many overused words. Quinn was very male and masculine and hard (everywhere: face, voice, body, good bits) and Saige was feminine (hand, body, the length of her). In fact "womanly curves" was used as a description a few times. And there were a lot of husky voices. The repetition and cliched characterizations were grating for me.
The two main characters lust and whine and moan internally for each other throughout the entire novel. It was a bit over the top for my taste. But, if you like that sort of obsession and overused words and phrases don't bother you, you might like this book.
This is book 2 of Rhyannon Byrd's Primal Instinct series and tells us the tale of the second Merrick Saige Buchanan and her Watcher Michael Quinn. Book 3 deals with Saige's other brother (bk 1 was Ian and Molly's story) Riley who is Sheriff of Henning and wants nothing to do with the primal thing in his blood. This book goes from the Rain Forests of Brazil to the Mountains of Colorado and is a quick decent read.
Better than the first book, probably because the mmc wasn’t so insufferable. There was still a lot of angsty back and forth, though. Overall, pretty good, although a few plot holes, like how can the mmc fight three of the bad guys at once when previously one of them would have taken out a Merrick by themselves? I’m being nitpicky, though.
Second book in the series and it’s saiges turn to become merrick. Do like a strong female lead but don’t like when authors make them do stupid things. Overall good read.
So 3.5 stars. I loved Michael Quinn. He is strong, stubborn, beautiful, and is a tortured soul. I mean seriously the stuff he went through in the past is awful, for me that was emotional to read. He alone is what makes this book worth the read and is why I give it 3.5 stars rather than a lessor rating. I definitely enjoyed him over Ian from the first book.
The problem....I didn't like the heroine, Saige. Yes she is strong and stubborn in the sense that she will risk her lives to save those that she loves. However for some odd reason she feels like she has to do these things alone and never asks for Quinn's help. That annoyed me.
Either way though I wasn't disappointed that I read this book. Quinn was my favorite and he is beautiful. We can't like every character, heroine, or hero in the books that read so I can look past Saige.
Besides I really enjoy reading books by Rhyannon Byrd. So far I have read 5 of her books and still look forward to reading more of them :-) She definitely knows how to write a strong alpa maile character.
Synopsis Saige Buchanan has always accepted that she is different and that once awakened her family bloodline will endow her with the ability to shift into a mythological creature. Now that the time is upon her, Saige will have to place her trust in an enigmatic stranger if she is to survive the evil forces who seek her destruction.
Review
A pale imitation of the first book.
There is very little character development and it is difficult to care about the main couple. Saige is annoying and her actions clearly make her TSTL. Quinn is overbearring and secretive. It is completely unclear what these two see in each other beyond the animal attraction.
The mythology underlying the story is not sufficiently development. The exact nature of the Merrick and Casus has yet to be explained in full and suddenly there is a new force in play (Collective Army) that is barely introduced.
Overall, a disappointing sequel to a promising debut. I may continue with the series but it is on the back burner for now.
I loved this book so much ,Quinn is totally awesome and dreamy , he does have trust issues but in the end Saige is able to break down his walls & its totally awesome when she does.
Saige was cool , I liked her but then there were times where I was questioning some of the things she did but after a while she finally started to let Quinn in and it was so great to she her and Quinn finally get together, there was so much sexual tension between her and Quinn from the moment they saw each other that I kept waiting for them to rip off thier clothes & ravish each other.
loved the side characters that were sll totally cool, can't wait to read more about them :)
overall this book was really good , there were a few times that it kinda felt like the book was missing pages, like some of the parts she didn't go into detail about were kinda something you needed her go into detail about, but in the end It doesn't ruin the overall awesomeness of the book.
Spectacular! Michael Quinn is something else. He's a shifter who becomes a raptor - a very dangerous and vicious killer. He is tasked with protecting Saige Buchanan who is on an archeological dig in Brazil searching for one of the dark markers. Like her brothers, Saige is also a Merrick and her beast is finally awakening. Of course, the Casus is after her and Quinn must protect her and transport her back to Colorado and safety. Now you know love is gonna happen and Quinn fights it mightily due to past horrors. Saige is all for it and rather testy when Quinn rejects her.
In spite of the danger and the tension, this is a really romantic story. I really liked both Quinn and Saige much better than Ian and Molly from Edge of Hunger. Quinn is definitely hero material and Saige is an incredibly strong and stubborn woman. I look forward to reading Riley's tale in Edge of Desire.
I enjoyed the second book in this series. Saige is the little sister to Ian Buchanan from the first book. Saige unlike Ian has a great need to find out as much about her Merrick creature that lives within her. She knows that her awakening is coming and there will be nothing she can do to stop it. She is doing her best to protect her family by finding the markers that are meant to protect the Merricks. As an anthropologist she has access to finding things in the earth. And she has been given a power to read its past by touch. When she meets Quinn the shape-shifter who was sent to protect her she reads his thoughts by touching a beer bottle he has touched. And boy does it ever get him in trouble with her. Quinn is a Raptor so he can fly. And this comes in handy when Saige puts herself in grave danger.
At times the heroine, by her own admission, was TSTL, and at other times the hero was acting almost unforgivably. Hmm...still gave it 4 stars though, because it evoked enough emotion to make me cry. And I'm going to ignore all the GREAT books that just came out (Retribution, Storm's Heart, Blood Hunt, others) that just came out and continue with Primal Instinct. Now THAT'S saying something!
