SATAN IN HOLLYWOOD

The nude girl in the photograph was beautiful, young, and rich-and a witch. And RICK HOLMAN had to find her. It looked easy-until a beautiful corpse washed in with the tide with her throat slashed.

And until he met the Coven!

They were six young psychos who liked their sex mixed with dope and the Devil. But one was a rapist with a kinky taste for ritual murder!

4 stars because of 1) the gorgeous cover by Robert McGinnis, 2) the loopy plot that features a group of hippies that turn to satanic ceremonies purely for kicks, 3) for a randy private detective who likes to make with the quips...and 4) for passages like this:

She gave a startled yelp when I suddenly grabbed hold of her shoulders and pulled her down over my knees, and an even more startled yelp when I slid my fingers under the elastic waistband of briefs and wrestled them down around her thighs. Her exposed bottom was a thing of beauty in itself, I noticed with a connoisseur's attention to detail being both proudly arched and pleasantly plump. I started slapping it hard, cheek by cheek, and only stopped when my arm ached and her bottom had acquired an overall deep blushing-pink color. There was a kind of hiatus while she just lay limp across my knees.
"Beast!" she murmured finally.
"That's me," I agreed.

What else can I say?

Tell me this is written in the 70s by not telling me. The women in the story are dumb and annoying and all the men are abusive if not borderline abusive. Not that I didn’t enjoy the plot and the book cover but the characters were all unlikable. Even so, it was a fun read and the author isn’t bad. I might read more of his stuff.
