A really wonderful start to Valiant's big crossover event. To begin with, it's great to see the Valiant heroes come together for a first time. However, one of the things I really love about this crossover is its non-linear narrative, focusing on the characters of each individual comic. Unity #0 shows the beginning of the story, but then The Eternal Warrior and Archer & Armstrong shows linking narratives. Finally, the futuristic Magnus backs up and shows some of the backstory! This isn't how Marvel and DC do it at all, but I find it vastly superior in many ways.

This volume also saw the first issues of The Eternal Warrior and Archer & Armstrong. I love The Eternal Warrior premiere, with its back story going back to Mesopotamia, while I found Archer & Armstrong weaker, since it starts en media res and dumps readers straight into Unity. (Maybe there was an issue #0 that had already been published?) The weakest part of this first volume is probably the Magnus issue, because it focuses so much on Magnus' own problems ... but still it has a great intro of the future Eternal Warrior and that great (and surprising) Unity backstory.

Overall, this was the original Valiant at its best, really showing off its great ideas about a big crossover.
