Loveless fashion model Nola Nichols thinks being beautiful is a curse; that is until she is cursed and her looks begin to fade just a week before the most important photo shoot of her career.

This imaginative quest takes her from the Caribbean to Glasgow’s own City of the Dead. Along the way, she finds herself taking part in a rather unconventional funeral, involved in a voodoo ritual, reveals one or two unrests in her own past and falls madly in love with a doctor. Erm, that would be a witch doctor, right…?

We meet Nola Nichols as she’s journeying from Barbados to London. She’s left her polo playing boyfriend behind and is returning after time away from the spotlight to model a new collection for a hot glossy magazine. Straight away the reader is introduced to Nola’s lifestyle and on the flight home, we get a glimpse of her personality that goes with that lifestyle. It’s during the flight back that she is cursed and from that moment, nothing is quite as it seems …
As Nola’s beauty fades she’s drawn on a quest with doctor Louis. During this time, opportunities present themselves, which in turn causes a reaction in Nola to look beneath the surface.
The lead characters and those on the periphery are well developed. The descriptions of the places we visit alongside Nola are well written – it was easy for me to feel as is if I was by her side. The pace of the novella doesn’t rush us through Nola’s story but unfolds at just the right time. As well as containing a moral, the reader has the romance between Nola and her doctor (with a couple of will they won’t they clashes).
How Do You Voodoo? is a novella that will entertain you and engage you … perfect for reading on that journey, as a break between full-length novels or when you have a spare couple of hours to yourself.
I would like to thank the author for a Kindle copy in exchange for an honest review.
I really like the morality that runs through the heart of this story. It’s a short, sharp, snappy read that takes a light-hearted look at the importance we place upon appearances and the detrimental behavior this encourages. The treatment Nola dishes out to the old woman is fairly typical and probably not too far-fetched, if we’re all honest.
Having a voodoo curse placed on the book’s main character is a unique and fun direction to take with this bite sized romance, and makes for an entertaining read – plus it is always satisfying to join a character on a his or her’s journey of self-discovery. The second book in the series is sure to be a hoot.

This was the second book I received from Loveahappyending magazine to review and I finished it in about an hour! Although it is a relatively short book it’s fast-paced and very amusing. It’s about a young girl called Nola who is, how do you put it? Quite stuck-up and self obsessed. Being one of the most beautiful models in the UK she feels that her beauty is a curse until one night, on a flight back from Barbados she encounters a woman who is making her flight hell. After numerous complaints the woman turns to her and puts a curse on her – unbeknown to Nola – that will gradually make her looks fade. Nola meets this woman’s son, Louis, who takes her on a strange journey through voodoo and spiritualist rituals, helps her come to terms with her past and unintentionally makes her fall in love with him. Nola opens up to Louis and reveals that she isn’t just a self-obsessed, ignorant model after all. Even if it did take a curse for her to realize.
For a short story, I thought this was a very enjoyable and clever plot. The author wasted no time tip toeing around what was going on and from the first page I was hooked. Hence why I finished it in less than an hour. The characters seem very well thought out and you begin to learn quite a lot about them – despite how fast-paced the story is. Although at first Nola seems like exactly the kind of person you wouldn’t want to meet, it’s interesting to read about a main character who isn’t your typical ‘good guy’. In fact, see’s extremely infuriating! But nevertheless, she interesting and the fun really starts when she gets cursed and her teeth start falling out. I really liked the character of Louis – he was everything that Nola was not and they really complimented each other however I wasn’t 100% clear on the time frame from when they first met till when they next meet. Their relationship is one which seems as though they’d known each other for years – which was lovely but from what I was aware of it was only a few days. She develops these deep, intense feelings for him in such a short space of time and although it seems unrealistic, I guess it can happen for those lucky few.
The only tiny criticism I have is that I noticed a few typo mistakes throughout the book but to me that wasn’t a big deal and perhaps something the author can ensure doesn’t happen in the future. For a short story, this book was jammed full of drama, humour and a splash of unexpected romance. For the length of the story it lacked no description or imagine and It definitely shows that people shouldn’t underestimate short stories as they too can be extremely fun and enjoyable.
This is quite a short book – 70 pages – and I started reading it because I needed something short to read and, although I don’t really read much romance, the title intrigued me.
Nola, a high-powered, glamorous model, with an inflated opinion of herself, came off the page as particularly unlikeable. Not a good start for a romantic story. She is on her way from the Caribbean to London for an important photo shoot, when she falls foul of a Haitian woman who puts a curse on her. From then on, things start to happen to Nola, which causes her to lose her looks. Her skin changes from a healthy tan to a greyish colour, with a healthy, or should I say an unhealthy, eruption of pimples. Her blonde hair turns mousy brown, and she loses two of her front teeth. Doctors indicate she is suffering from a virus, but Nola is convinced she is cursed.
She seeks out the Haitian woman’s son, Louis, in an attempt to reverse the curse, and from then on things get very interesting. There is a trip to Glasgow, a creepy cemetery visit, a reunion with her mother, and a growing attraction to Louis.
I must admit I had mixed feelings when Nola suffered her loss of looks. I swung between feeling sorry for her, and feeling she deserved all she got. The scene in the Necropolis Cemetery was full of the kind of suspense you would expect in a Stephen King book, and I feared for her, expecting the worst. If I had been writing the story, this would have been the lead-in to some nasty happenings. However, this is a romance, therefore blood and gore cannot be part of the menu. The suspense did continue though, but now it was romantic suspense, and it had a different feel.
By the end of the story, Nola had become a very different, and much more likeable person, and I was rooting for her to succeed in capturing her man, if not her career.
I must say, I enjoyed this story much more than I expected to, and consider it an enjoyable read.
This new novella by author Janice Horton is a short read for Halloween time. At only 20,000 words it's a quick, entertaining contemporary read.
Nola Nichols is a top fashion model, used to her appearance being preened and polished to perfection at all times. Whilst on a flight traveling back to the UK from the Caribbean, trying to sleep in her first class bed, Nola is irked by a woman who appears to be ill and has been moved up from economy making noise and causing disruption to her peaceful routine. Demanding of the staff that the woman is removed back to her economy seat, Nola is aware of some words that the woman utters; could this be some sort of curse? Thinking little more of this at the time, when she returns home, strange physical changes being to happen to Nola. Suddenly the things she has prized most highly, her looks, are starting to fade, and with an important new modeling job coming up, she must somehow find a way to restore herself.
There is a strong moral behind the story which is very current when thinking about our society nowadays. The main character is very focused on her appearance, believing that this is what matters most. Through the events within the story, she grows to realise that how she behaves and how she treats others are the things that ought to matter to her much more, and that kindness and friendship are more rewarding than selfishness and vanity.
Will she confront the ghosts of her past? And how will things develop with Louis, the doctor she has met? The story takes in, amongst other places, the City of the Dead or Necropolis in Glasgow.
It was a nice change to read a shorter story but one that still felt fulfilling and delivered intrigue and character development. Another entertaining, fun modern-day tale from this author with a nice balance of humour, sweet romance, morals and a spooky side!
The beautiful but selfish and self-centered Nola is returning from her getaway to the Caribbean. Now that Nola was on her way back to the UK and looking forward to a big photo shoot all she wants to do is rest on the plan. But, all of that is thwarted when a woman is brought into the cabin where she is and begins making a lot of noise. Nola being the diva that she is is angered by this disruption. She is rude to the hysterical woman and to the flight crew. While Nola is busy demanding things the woman begins placing a voodoo curse on Nola. At the time Nola doesn’t believe that could be what the woman was doing. But, when her precious looks seem to be gone almost over night then she believes. In an attempt to beg the woman to lift the curse. When she finds out what happened to the woman she thinks all hope is lost. That is until she finds the woman’s son. With her son she must help him so that he will help her, but in doing so will the curse be lifted or will she be forced to leave the career and life she has lived for so long.
Though this was only a novella, this story was as good as some of the full length novels I have read. The story was wonderfully told and the characters did a great amount of developing in a short amount of pages. I really enjoyed Nola’s transition and the value the finally found in being judged by who she was instead of what she looked like. I think this story was great example of the kind of storyteller Janice Horton is. I can’t wait to read the rest of the trilogy and one of her full length novels. I know that I will enjoy those as much as I did How Do You Voodoo.

I really enjoyed this book from start to finish, was a shame it was only a short story but still fab indeed. It is a book that you can sit down and relax with especially on a rainy day. I loved the character Nola Nichols, it did really make me laugh the problems she was having, shows that being beautiful isn't always everything. I do hope Janice does a follow on book so we could find out what happens more in Nola's life.
I suggest if you do own a Kindle then do purchase this little Novella as you won't want to miss out i promise you! It is a perfect light hearted read.
A short, lively and entertaining read that was fun to read and thoroughly enjoyable.
Nola is a beautiful and up and coming top model and lands a job that could be her big break but on the flight back to the UK from the Caribbean, after drinking too much free champagne and wanting her beauty sleep she is disturbed by a panic stricken elderly lady and insults her! The elderly lady retaliates with strange mutterings about revealings but Nola takes no notice despite overhearing murmurs about the lady being a Mamba - voodoo priestess - until she discovers the beauty that is the key to her life is fading fast. Could Nola have been cursed?! As her golden hair fades to brown and her tan drains away, Nola needs answers - and a reversal - fast! She needs to track down the Mamba woman's son and in doing so becomes enmeshed in the strange world of voodoo magic. Will Nola get her reversal or will she never get her looks back?
This is a fast paced and humourous read and should be a warning to everybody that you never know who you are being rude to! Hold the tongue and be more patient or you just might find yourself on the wrong end of a curse!
A one of a kind read that I would recommend as a light, feel good read that can't disappoint - and I'll certainly be looking out for the second voodoo book.
Nola (Nora) Nichols is 23 yrs old rising star in a fashion model industry. Because of one mistake and one papparazzi's photograph she is sent to the Carribbean island of Barbados.
When the photo is forgiven she gets a call from her agent to get back to the UK where a new - a break through - job is waiting for her.
She leaves the Barbados and her current 'date-friend' on a plane in a first class as she got used to. But on the plane nothing goes as she thinks it should. Not eating properly, drinking too much of champagne, finally she loses her temper over a female passanger who is brought to the first class area, because of her panic attack and bad heart condition.
Complaining too much over everything because of the Haiti Lady, she throws a spell 'of reveal the true you' over her. Not believing in 'mumbo-jumbo' stuff, Nola is very surprised and at the end also afraid to find out that something 'funny' is going on with her...
I read this novella in one day and liked it. I cannot say in one sitting as unfortunately I don't get that much of free time...
Why I gave this one 4 star review? Because I wanted it to be longer... Simple...
Nola Nichols is a top model. She had broken free from her humble beginnings in Glasgow and turned her life around and was now a national icon, who models for the top UK designers, make-up manufacturers and prestigious car companies.
Nola’s life is great, until on a flight back to the UK from the Caribbean, she is rude to a fellow woman passenger, angry words are exchanged. Not long after this incident things start to go wrong for Nola, she begins to lose her looks when strange happenings occur.
Could be that the woman on the plane Nola exchange words with as put a Voodoo curse on her?
With less than a week to a big important photo shoot, Nola must act fast to find the woman and have the curse removed. Will she find a lot more than she is looking for?
A superb novella from author Janice Horton an interesting storyline about a character who thinks she as it all but learns there is something missing. I really enjoyed the story and I thought it was really well written and very entertaining too. The book can easily be read in one sitting. This the first book by Janice Horton I have read and I look forward to reading more.
This is a short novella and was perfect rainy day reading for me. Just the sort of lovely story to relax with. Nola is a top model. She has everything going for her and is thought to be one a very beautiful woman. However, on a flight back from Barbados, Nola’s life is about to take on a staggering transformation thanks to a Mambo or a voodoo priestess. Can Nola really break the curse and get her life back on track? There’s everything at stake here, including a top modelling job. But, as Nola soon begins to realise, she has forgotten about what the really important things in life are and what her humble beginnings were. Meeting Louis soon changes her thinking, but is it enough to fix her life in time? This was such a fun read but with a serious message throughout. Nola’s lessons throughout the book are lessons for the reader too. The story has just the right sprinkling of romance and humour that doesn’t detract from the underlying message. Well done to Janice Horton for a lovely story.
When we first meet Nola she is on a flight back from the Caribean and is disturbed by another passenger, Nola behaves like a complete diva. She wakes up having lost her tan, having problems with her hair and my miss out on a photo shoot the will sky rocket her career.
Nola goes in search of the woman who cursed her and instead finds her handsome son Louis, they go on journey to Scotland to try to lift Nola's curse.
This is a great short story from Janice, I couldn't help but like Nola even though at times she is selfish and a proper diva. Louis is respectful of his mothers beliefs, even though he doesn't believe the same things.
Louis and Nola grow close on their journey and then have a disagreement. Can Nola forget Louis and get on with her life?
How Do You Voodoo? is a novella of approximately 20,000 words and what a fun 20,000 words it is.
I really enjoyed the light-hearted tone of the novella and the humour that Janice Horton brings to it. There's a little bit of everything, romance, intrigue, mystery, black magic and fun. It touches on a few more serious issues, but all in keeping with the style and genre. The story takes a trip to Scotland and it was really great reading about the area.
A really fun and heart-warming read to curl up with over Halloween or, indeed, any time for that matter.
Be careful who you upset ... this is a unique little story and what a brilliant idea from Scottish author Janice Horton. Immediately you begin reading it you recognise her inimitable style and if you have read Janice’s other novels (which I can heartily recommend), you will not be disappointed with Voodoo! Short stories can sometimes leave you feeling a little cheated, but this novella is an absolute delight. Nola experiences a range of emotions as the story unfolds and finds herself up against something that makes her think twice about who she is and what’s important in life.
After reading Janice's book Bagpipes and Bullshot (which I thoroughly enjoyed) I read this first book of her Voodoo Trilogy and enjoyed it quite a bit. A light and easy read with a different story than I'm used to. Humor, fashion industry, vanity and voodoo curses are a few of the things you come across. Without giving too much away...be careful of who you sit next to on an airplane! You never know what can happen. I found myself at times hanging on by a thread wondering what was going to happen next. Love a little suspense. Very fun read.
Janice Horton has done it again! How Do You Voodoo? is a great read with larger than life characters. Even though the heroine, Nola, whose real name is Nora is selfish, you can sympathise with her plight. After all, she believes she's had a voodoo spell cast on her.
I particularly liked the segment that takes place in the Glasgow Necropolis, but then I happen to like cemeteries.
A great novella with a unique theme! Meet self-obsessed Nola and watch her slowly fall apart until she meets handsome doctor Louis! Can he uncurse her and will their unconventional start lead to more than hocus pocus?
A delightful story - my one complaint - wish it had been a full length novel! 4 stars!
An entertaining read which I devoured in one sitting. I really like how Nola developed and grew over the course of the tale. I have the next in the series already waiting to be read!
