In this companion short-story to Matt Archer: Monster Hunter, fifteen-year-old Matt Archer finds himself in the Australian Outback on the trail of his latest targets...and hunting hyper-intelligent, mutated Dingoes is not his idea of a great summer vacation.
Making things more complicated, Matt's Uncle Mike--aka Major Tannen--is his C.O. for this mission. To Matt's consternation, the major's new fiancée, Captain Julie Hunter, is also along for the trip.
When Captain Hunter disappears during a routine scouting trip, it's up to Matt to help his uncle find her before it's too late.
Kendra C. Highley lives in north Texas with her husband and two children. She also serves as staff to four self-important and high-powered cats. This, according to the cats, is her most important job. She believes in everyday magic, extraordinary love stories, and the restorative powers of dark chocolate
Matt Archer: Monster Summer by Kendra Highley is definitely titles correctly as the crew sets out to eliminate the last of the monster dingoes and the battle makes this novelette so intense, making me want to read more about Matt and his motley cast of characters.
Great short story! I recently finished "Matt Archer: Monster Hunter" and noticed there was another book that follows. This is a short story that continues Matt Archers adventure. I really enjoyed it. I like the humor that goes along with the book. The author did a great job giving us some action packed scenes along with some good characters to follow.
Again I will say that I am looking forward to more of Matt Archer's adventures and what will await him next.
I'm a huge Matt Archer fan! Monster Summer is a great short story about Matt's struggle to be a grown-up monster hunter. Even though he has to face very ugly situations, he's still a fifteen year old kid who wants to spend time with his uncle. I really like how he is able to put everything in perspective and once again save the world from monsters.
*I received a free copy of this book from the author via Smashwords in exchange for an honest review*
Matt is finally coming to terms with his role as a monster killer and has best friend Will working with them. For the summer, they are part of a military operation in the Australian Outback to kill mutant dingoes. But these creatures are smarter, speak Australian English and work as a team, leading to one of the squads being kidnapped.
"It was just an attempted strangling...nothing serious."
Matt and Will are happy to be working together and visiting Australia though that changes when they are attacked by trash talking Aussie mutants. Matt is already struggling with his jealousy over having to share his precious time with Mike with Mike's new fiancee' Julie, who is part of the team for this mission. When Julie's team are kidnapped, Mike has to risk Matt and his team to rescue her. Could the Archer family have a more complicated time right now? In later books, I will assume yes!
I wasn't sure if I would take to Julie but she is a good character and Mike does deserve a bit of happiness when he is not monster hunting. You do feel sympathy for Matt though. Mike is his father figure and sharing him with a stranger is difficult, especially when Mike and Julie will be moving to DC. In this book I really enjoyed the dingoes new intelligence and the fact that it was a different monster from those in book one. It keeps things interesting when there are different monsters and locations.
My only complaint is that the book was just too short! I'd have liked to have seen more in the search for Julie to give it more time for the tension to build up, maybe a more fleshed out big fight at the end. But that is just a bit of nitpicking on my part! I did enjoy this book even though it was short and I'm moving straight on to book 2.
Did I enjoy this book: I did enjoy this book. I read it every free chance I had and finished it in a day.
This was a fun adventure that helped reintroduce me to Matt, Mike, and Will before I read Blade's Edge. (I read Monster Hunter almost a year ago...I remember it but this was a great way to catch up.) And we get to meet Captain Julie Hunter, Matt's soon-to-be aunt.
The action was great. I enjoy how Matt and Will, best friends, work together in the field on their top-secret missions. Matt is still young but starting to grow up a bit. He is finding his way.
Would I recommend it: I would recommend it. If you have read Matt Archer: Monster Hunter and you plan on reading Matt Archer: Blade's Edge, read this one. It's a great addition to the story.
If you love monsters and mayhem, definitely check out this free intro to the Matt Archer series. You'll be hooked, and the full-length books don't disappoint when you're craving to read the full story. This is perfect for those who love action and is a super quick read - I read it in one sitting because I couldn't put it down.
Hey, I am really beginning to like this kid! Fun short story, gave us a little bit of the snarkier side of Matt. I liked that the story was a little darker and a little more dangerous. And dingoes. You can't go wrong with dingoes! :)
This continues on in true Monster Hunter style. I reallly enjoyed "spending the summer" with Matt in the Australian Outback and can't wait to see what book 2 holds :)
Come by my blog post to read an excerpt if you want. Just click the cover below. I just loved this series, and this book, and best part is this novella is free for kindle, at Amazon. I read book one, then was looking forward to the Outback mission, then started book 2, and was freaked as it was 6 months later and skipped over the summer Outback mission, so went to look at what I missed. I seen this at Amazon for free and downloaded right away, was happy about that.
It did not disappoint at all, I loved the action and fun in this book, and some scary too. It’s a short fun read and a great addition to the series. I suppose you do not have to read it to read the others, but it is a mission that I had fun reading about.
What’s there to lose? It’s free. Go get it.
I give this book 5 out of 5 stars just like all the books deserve.
I really enjoyed this sneak peek into the world of Matt Archer. I wish this series was around when I was a teen! Author Kendra C. Highley accurately portrays the life and emotions of a youth trying to find his way in life. As I commented while reading this companion novella, the story and the whole premise itself is reminiscent of Charlie Higson's "Young Bond" series. From action and suspense to heart-warming family bonding and romance, "Matt Archer" has it all! Matt, a teenage boy who is growing up without a father finds a hero in his tough, yet nurturing uncle Mike. Their relationship is very touching. However, the military lingo was a bit tiresome; I'm not really into that kind of thing. But apart from that, I loved this story! I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the "Monster Hunter" adventures! I would highly recommend this book to everyone who likes great action movies. Science fiction fans and outdoor enthusiasts will also be entertained.
matt and will continue their monster killing duties, this time in the land down under. whilst in the australian outback will gets some official training with the green beret's while matt spend his time trying to avoid interrupting his uncle and his soon-to-be bad ass aunt julie's personal time, and waiting for the chance to take care of the dingo's that are infesting the outback. the mission doesn't go according to plan when they realise the dingo's are a lot smarter than first thought and have taken uncle mikes fiance and her team as hostages.
monster summer is everything a short story should be. it's funny, entertaining, and helps bridge the gap between book 1&2 perfectly. a definite must read.
This is a short story showing Matt in Australia helping to hunt the rest of the Dingoes before they reek havock in the outback.
Matt is learning more about who he is and has gained some confidence in his abilities. He is finding out how to seperate his life at home from missions, espically in the case of his Uncle Mike and soon to be Aunt, " Badass Aunt Julie". Plus there's his best friend Will always at his back and they are trying to learn everything they can about how to fight the enemy without getting hurt or killed on the job.
this is great. we see matt in his new element. On his first major assignment matt faces many challenges. He needs to prove himself, get the guys to accept him and make his uncle proud. Alot to put on a fourteen year olds shoulder. while this is happening, Matt also needs to help save his Uncle's love interest Julie.
the side characters are great here. I love Johnson and crew. And Matt's sister is great. she is like a kid in a genius body.
A fun exciting book that has us see what Matt is going to be and what he is going to go through as he fights monsters.
Monster Summer is a short novella in the Matt Archer series. It takes place between the first and second full length novels in the series. Monster Summer develops Matt's character, along with some of the supporting cast, making it a worthwhile read. Don't skip over it especially since it's free on kindle!
