A short story re-enforcing the character and the smooth MI6, operator Aidan Snow has become through the books of Alex Shaw.

Anyone reading this would not hesitate to seek out more of the same; well there are three or four novels waiting for you.

Although jokingly talking about Snow’s ‘licence to kill’ he is no James Bond. In this short background informing story we see the man as a loyal friend. A little impulsive; not afraid to cut corners and quick thinking in his problem solving. He is also a man of some integrity and those he helps seldom forget his support and remain grateful that Aidan Snow came through for them.

When a friend calls him in a last desperate cry for help from Kyiv, Snow drops everything to fly to the Ukraine to help a mate. He quickly learns that following a car chase his pal has been arrested awaiting charge. But there is more to this than the basic facts and it takes all Snow’s tactical skills to overcome not only a corrupt militia but to save himself as well as his close friend.

The political situation which the author knows from personal experience makes these stories both compelling and contemporary. I appreciated the action sequences and quick thinking demonstrated by Snow in an ever changing situation. There is a real sense of danger and I wouldn’t wish to party in the Ukraine without a mate like Snow on speed dial.

Well written, bright and full of colour and life. Shaw writes with conviction and now that his talent has been recognised I fully expect him to blossom fully as a thriller writer.

Copy of reader review from Amazon.co.uk:

I am glad to say that the latest from Alex Shaw has not let me down. It builds on his two SAS thrillers, Hetman and Cold Black but it can be read as a one off. Shaw states that the story was written `on location' and from the vivid descriptions I can see it worked.
The action takes place over a weekend. Snow gets a panicked call from a friend in Ukraine asking for help and immediately flies to Kyiv where he is pitted against both the mafia and the local authorities.
There are some decent new characters in this story as well as many old faces and the writing is very pacey. There is an element of humour which worked well.
If you haven't read anything by Alex Shaw then this is a great introduction. If you are already a `Hetman' fan then you'll love this.
Come on Alex, when's the next novel due?
