I thought this book would be really good. It has such a refreshing premise, and promises to be rather exciting.

If you skip to about the middle of the book, you get what is promised. The storyline takes forever to get moving. I have lost a loved one, and I completely understand the devastation, the anger, the depression. I also understand there is a difference between how a Christian handles that kind of grief, and how someone who is not a Christian or who has turned their back on God, blaming Him for what happened handles those emotions. It just is not clear at the beginning what kind of person Lynn is to give reason for the way she is handling her grief. She prays on page 3.

However, it only seems an interminable age plowing through those first few chapters, and I found myself not really caring what happened to Lynn or whether Rachel made the right choice between the two men vying for her affections. I felt slightly cheated because the back blurbs held such promise, and the rave reviews from famous people said it was a terrific book. I just didn't find that between the covers of this book.

I think the main reason I felt cheated is because this is a proven author, with several published novels under her belt. Probably, I was looking for something different, and that was my fault, not the author's.

I intensely dislike head-hopping, and there is a LOT of that in this book. Written in 3rd person, the reader can browse through each character's head like browsing at Walmart. Macias uses a technique of allowing the character to tell the reader what she or he is thinking. When done sparingly, and done very well, it can be a powerful tool. I think Marcias over uses it.

In creative writing, we learn to make the characters tell the story, and we show what happens rather than telling what happens. There was a novel I reviewed several years ago that went to the opposite extreme by writing nothing but action, never telling what the characters were thinking, and therefore never head-hopping. It was unusual and unnerving. Macias, on the other hand gives each character a voice by head-hopping frequently, which becomes annoying. In a larger, more detailed work, this would give more room to develop each character. The reader is not given time to come to love the characters; therefore must subsist on the love between mother and daughter, and the two love interests for the daughter.

There are really good parts in the story. The descriptions of small town living, and the cantankerous neighbor who was Lynn's brother's best friend are wonderfully written. However, this book does not make me want to run out about buy up all Kathi Macias' other offerings.

I give it a 1 star out of 5 stars.

This is a delightful story set in a typical small town, Bloomfield. It explores family relationships, grief, faith, finding the direction Gods wants your life to take, sweet romance, helping those less fortunate than you are, peer pressure, perceived expectations, false first impressions, and new beginnings. The mother/daughter relationship between Rachel and Lynn is delightful, and their different personalities were woven together well. The only part I grew a little bit tired of was Rachel trying to decide what to do when two young men show interest in her. They were both very nice, so it wasn’t an obvious right or wrong choice, and she did ask God’s guidance. That part, I felt was a little drawn out and could have ended sooner. The outcome of the small mystery was surprising and satisfying. I did enjoy reading it.

Lynn left her hometown of Bloomfield 35 years ago to marry the love of her life, Daniel. She hasn’t been back to Bloomfield since her mom died more than 10 years ago. A lot has changed since then, her husband died and their daughter has just finished college. When she receives word her only sibling has died and left his estate to her, Lynn and Rachel take a road trip to Bloomfield. While sorting through the estate, they uncover a mystery from long ago. They pick up the trail where Lynn’s brother had left it before he died.

This book is part mystery and part romance. I found bits of it to be a little far fetched to be believable, but overall it was an enjoyable read. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good clean romance and mystery.

Lynn Myers is trying to find a way to move forward in her life now that she has lost her husband Daniel after being married for thirty-five years. How does one simply pick up the pieces and move on? It doesn't help when she also receives a letter in the mail informing her that her only brother, Myron Cofield has also passed away and didn't want her to know about it. He stipulated in his will that his attorney was to wait at least three weeks after his death before notifying Lynn that she has inherited everything he owns. The only thing is, all he owns is in the small town of Bloomfield that Lynn grew up in as a child and subsequently moved away from when she married Daniel. Is it possible to go back to her beginning to try and find a new path this late in her life?

Armed with her dog Beasley and her daughter Rachel that has just returned home after graduating from Bible college, both women set off on a road trip to see just what Myron has left them. All they know is he used to live in a creepy two-story house next to the town's cemetery, I mean seriously who would want to live there? But all Lynn knows is that she can't continue to live in the house she and Daniel shared because everyday was another constant reminder of what she didn't have any longer and the person she loved would no longer answer her calls for him in their home.

When they arrive in Bloomfield, they are delighted by just how truly the small town feel really is. The waitress, Jolene Trump at Bert's Barbecue is still working there and must be about seventy now. However Lynn soon realizes that a lot of the people she grew up knowing are still living in Bloomfield, population 9, 978 and still home of the annual Spring Fling Festival. After meeting with her lawyer, Lynn and Rachel learn that the house is still situated at the end of Cemetery Road and that her brother insisted that the grounds keeper, Jason would be provided a place to live as long as they owned the house. He carry for the "garden" as he called the cemetery and the people buried there were his plants! He took his job very seriously and it seemed as if Myron and Jason had a great friendship since both of them lived like recluses.

It doesn't take Lynn long to learn that her brother Myron was in the midst of attempting to solve the mystery of righting the wrongs of long time resident Last Chance Justice. He hoped that Lynn would carry on in his quest if he died before finding out the truth. Now it's up to Lynn and Rachel to find out just what happened to Last Chance Justice before it's time to decide whether to sell Myron's home or will the call of small town Bloomfield speak volumes to both Lynn and Rachel and call them back home instead.

I received Last Chance for Justice by Kathi Macias compliments of B and H Publishing Group and Christian Fiction Blog Alliance for my honest review and received no monetary compensation for a favorable one. I really loved this novel first of all for the small town appeal that Bloomfield immediate draws the readers in and makes you want to stay here. Second, is the mystery of finding out what happened to Last Chance Justice and if its possible this many years later to finally solve the town's mystery and bring the reputation of the town's most notorious criminal to rest in peace once and for all. I can't wait to read many more books in the Bloomfield series and just know that I will come to love them as much as the delightful characters you meet in this one. Hands down a 4.5 of out 5 stars in my opinion and a great novel to add to your summer reading list.

Kathi Macias in her new book, “Last Chance For Justice” published by B&H Publishing Group brings us into the life of Lynn Myers.

From the back cover: Welcome to Bloomfield, where life is simple, love is real and stories are shared.

Lynn Myers is still reeling from losing her husband of thirty-five years when word comes that her only sibling, an older brother, has also died. With no one else to settle the estate, she must return to her small hometown of Bloomfield, however briefly, to settle his affairs.
Lynn’s daughter, Rachel, has just graduated from Bible college and with no other commitments comes along to sort through her uncle’s huge old home, right next to the local cemetery.

It isn’t long before Rachel has two men — a handsome CPA and the youth pastor — seriously vying for her attention. At the same time, Lynn’s attention is drawn to a set of journals her brother has left behind detailing a long-standing Bloomfield mystery.

As they pursue solving this mystery, Rachel must make some personal decisions about her future, while Lynn is forced to face unexpected issues from her own past.

Where can you go to pick yourself up when you have two devastating traumas in your life? Lynn just lost her husband and then received the news that her brother died. Now she and her daughter have to go home to her roots to settle his estate that he left to her. You wouldn’t think it but Bloomfield is a restorative. It’s the people who live there, they all have their quirks and faults just like everyone else but they have the ability to reach into Lynn’s broken heart and help the healing. Then Rachel gets involved in a mystery that her brother was trying to solve before he died. It seems that there was a man named Last Chance Justice and he died with the scandal of thievery of $7.14 to his name. Bloomfield is the town where names are cleared, the past is restored, the future begins and love abounds. Bloomfield is a really nice town where great characters live. ”Last Chance For Justice” has a great mystery, wonderful characters that we grow to love and care for and is a terrific read. I highly recommend it.

The first book ("The Singing Quilt") I read by Kathi Macias got a five-star rating from me—no small feat as y’all know—and I’m sad to say it’s taken me a year and a half to pick up another book by her, why I’m not sure! She’s a great, clean, characters-with-great-faiths author! I really enjoyed “Last Chance for Justice”. (Even though I got caught up more in the John vs Hayden then the mystery, most of the time. ;) )

Last Chance For Justice is about Lynn Myers and her daughter Rachel. Lynn finds out her brother has passed away and left everything to her. She must return to the town of her childhood, Bloomfield, to settle his estate. Rachel comes with her, and helps Lynn face the town she left behind. With only a quick visit in mind, God has other plans and soon she and Rachel find themselves caught up in the legacy that her brother, Myron, left when he died.

The book was well written and interesting. It was a little bit predictable and cliche in some parts however it wasn’t over the top so it wasn’t annoying.

The characters were extremely likeable. They did have their flaws though so I did find myself mildly irritated by some of their actions however this did make it more realistic. I did find it interesting as there was no “bad guy” or villain in the story. I didn’t actually notice this until I had finished reading.

The book is a Christian novel and there are obviously Christian themes. I’m a Christian, so this obviously didn’t bother me at all. I didn’t find it preachy or too religious, it flowed well.

One thing I noticed about the style of writing is that everything is mentioned. “Pulling into the dirt-and-gravel parking lot, Rachel maneuvered the Corolla into a cool, shady spot and cracked the windows for the now-snoozing Beasley. Both women knew he’d be fine while they went inside to eat”. I actually really liked that. I don’t need to know if they go to the toilet however I’m the person that says, what about Beasley? You just left him in the car, is he okay? This book left me no doubts or unanswered questions like that and I really appreciated it. If you find that annoying, the book may irritate you, however for those like me – it is fantastic.

Overall I enjoyed the book and I am interested to read the author’s other works that are set in Bloomfield. I would definitely recommend it to those who like light romance with a bit of mystery thrown in.

Last Chance for Justice:A Bloomfield Novel by Kathi Macias is another 5 stars novel. Kathi's books have been on my To Be List for awhile and this one was given to me by Kathi Macias for an honest review and I am glad I read it. I think the books in this series are all stand alones. I do know they are written by different authors. Last Chance for Justice is the 4th in the series. But after reading this novel I brought the other three and hope to have every book in this series.
Bloomfield is just a little town where secrets are not kept. Lynn Myers and her daughter Rachel go back to Bloomfield to settle Lynn's brother estate. Lynn is worried about how the town's people will accept her after being gone so long. She left Bloomfield to marry Daniel, an outsider, who has just recently died. It was supposed to be a simple trip to get the affairs in order and leave. But once they get in Bloomfield things aren't that simple. Lynn and Rachel learn about a mystery that Myron, Lynn's brother, was trying to solve before he died. Lynn and Rachel are caught up in the mystery. I won't tell what the mystery is but will tell you it is about a boy named Last Chance Justice. Rachel even has a couple of love interests in this story. I keep reading this novel because I wanted to see if the mystery was solved and how it would be. I also knew who I wanted Rachel to choose. There was also the chance she wouldn't choose either because she might not stay in Bloomfield! The characters in this story are true to life and so easy to pretend they are real people like you and me. The ending makes you want to continue reading about the people in Bloomfield. I will let you read the book and see how it all works out!
I was given a ebook copy from the author for a honest reveiw.

How long does it take to clear the name of an innocent man? So far, Last Chance Justice has waited several decades. In fact, he died with his name still bearing the shame of the missing $7.14 from the church offering.

(I know, Last Chance is a strange name--with an interesting reason why the Justice family called him that.)

Lynn Myers, recently widowed, now finds out her brother Myron has passed away, leaving her with a huge old house next to a graveyard and an old mystery. She and her just-graduated-from-college daughter Rachel set off for Bloomfield, the town where Lynn had been born and raised. A small town heavy in small-town activities and big-time gossiping. A week or two to settle the estate, and they should be able to leave there and go back to the home she'd had with her beloved husband.

She didn't care about this old mystery her brother had tried unsuccessfully to resolve. Really, $7.14? No one in town even seemed to remember the incident. Except Homer Tatum, deaf and hungry at the local retirement home; Jason, the scruffy, smelly, supposed caretaker living on Myron's property; and Miss Pearl, the last living member of the Justice siblings. Why bother?

And yet--It had been one of Myron's last wishes. And Rachel is interested--or maybe she just wants an excuse to stay in Bloomfield a little longer where two guys are vying for her attention.

To find out the answers, you must buy the book. I mean, it's by Kathi Macias, one of the best inspirational writers in the business--how far wrong can you go?

After years of creating powerful, heartrending faith-filled stories, Macias turns to a lighter style that remains true to her Christian readers. With Last Chance for Justice, the author has created an easy read that is sometimes funny, sometimes sad, and always entertaining. Masterfully told, this is the story of two women coping with uncertainty. Lynn has already lost her husband of thirty-five years when she receives word that her only sibling has died and bequeathed his creepy home by the town's cemetery to her. Her daughter Rachel has just finished college and her temporary job fell through, so she returns home in time to learn of her uncle's death and her mother's planned trip to Bloomfield. They journey together, not knowing what to expect. While Lynn is facing issues from her past, Rachel is praying for guidance for her future.

Everything readers come to expect from one of Macias' books is here: masterful storytelling, a strong plot, engaging characters, and faith. The difference being that Last Chance for Justice is not as emotionally charged as her books on human trafficking or persecuted Christians. I like this style. Macias does well with it.

Last Chance for Justice is the fourth Bloomfield novel released by B&H Publishing. Featuring multiple authors and titles spanning a mix of traditional print and eBook-exclusive formats, these are all stand alone projects set in the small town of Bloomfield.

If you enjoy faith-based cozy mysteries, you should give Last Chance for Justice by Kathi Macias a try.

I was so glad I picked this book up after reading quite a few young adult books. This could be classed as young adult, but I view it more as adult light romance and mystery. It is a nice paced novel, with a sweet story, and just nice to relax with.

So Lynn is still struggling after the loss of her husband when she receives notice that her brother has passed, and that she will have to go back to the close knit, small town she grew up in. Luckily her only child, Rachel, is available to take this trip with her, and they both go on a journey that turns out a lot differently to how either women thought it would.

Lynn’s brother left a mystery that he wished to solve, and now Lynn and Rachel find themselves attempting to honer Lynns brothers last dying wish – to clear Last Chance Justice’s name.

This is a cute novel, perfect when you want a relaxing book to keep you company on a summers day. If you want a fast paced, racy romance, or a complicated mystery, this book is not for you. But if you want a nice summer read, this is perfect.

However, I do have a few negatives and that was the amount of repetition within the book – a lot of eating is one example. Also this book had a heavily religious side, but that is not a negative, just something I am not used to, but made the story slightly further away from my understanding of life. But that is just who the characters are.

An enjoyable light read. And a breath of fresh air after reading quite a few ‘heavy’ young adult books.

Travel with mother Lynn and daughter Rachel to Bloomfield—a small town where everyone knows everyone and nothing is secret from your neighbours. But still there is an unsolved mystery in Bloomfield.

When Lynn inherited her brother’s house at cemetery drive in Bloomfield, she never had thought that she would also inherit her brother’s desire to solve the mystery about Last Chance Justice. Who is this Last Chance?—and perhaps even more interesting is to find out how this man got his name.

Lynn grew up in Bloomfield and left town when she got married. After 35 years she’s back for a couple of days to go through her brother’s belongings and to put his house on the market. But things take longer than she thought and meanwhile she gets reacquainted with old friends.
Her beautiful daughter attracts the attention of the young men and soon there are two young men vying for her hand.

This was a relaxing and enjoyable read. The characters are so real and it really feels like the reader is visiting and having coffee or sun tea on the porch with them. There are some really nice and interesting secondary characters. The atmosphere is relaxed and lighthearted. The mystery keeps the reader guessing—I really had no idea where it was going. So yes, I think Kathi Macias did a nice job!

Kathi Macias has touched my heart with this book. I could relate to Lynn, even though I experienced grief due to divorce, while she was widowed. I also loved the relationship between Lynn and Rachel. I have three daughters and they are so precious to me. I value time with them just as Lynn does with Rachel. Rachel is seeking God's will for her life after graduating from Bible College. I also attended wives' courses at seminary while my husband attended there. Lynn has inherited her brother's home, which is right beside a cemetery. The characters continuously refer to it as "creepy" but I love walking through cemeteries and reading the stories of peoples' lives on the tombstones. My daughters and I visit them often. Kathi writes with such incredible detail that I felt like I was a part of the story. As I read, I kept telling my husband things about the book and I am sure he thought I was "off my rocker". This story has a delightful mystery as Lynn and Rachel try to solve the mystery of the missing money and Last Chance Justice. This kept me on my toes, trying to figure out what did happen to that money....money that ruined Last Chance's reputation.

This book has mysteries going both directions..into the past and back to the present. I was very happy with this read. In the beginning I was sure I would have it all figured out by a few chapters in. Then I thought maybe by the half-way point. Nope. Took me until the very end to understand all the complexities in this book!

The author has created a really entertaining cast of characters in this novel. The main character is pretty tough, but also feminine and easy to grow attached to. The thoughts she expresses are often funny and right on target, many times they were the kind of things I would think myself.

If you like novels where the romance is evenly paced and the characters actually take the time to get to know one another before suddenly being madly in love, you will appreciate the style with which Kathi Macias has written this. I particularly enjoyed Rachel. She was totally different than I would have expected when first reading the details about this book, and it was a pleasant surprise to see something unexpected.

Perfect for an afternoon away from work with a cup of tea and a blanket! This story is so well paced and enjoyable that you just don't want to put it down.

Hmmm... I'm having a hard time rating this book. I loved the plot. It was simple, sweet, and very slow. Very real-life vibes. But, at the same time, it also was draggy, which made it hard to keep reading.

Honestly, I had a hard time caring much about Lynn... which might just because of my age; I don't know. I loved Rachel, though, and her struggles with being assertive and navigating relationships with guys. I related a lot to her heart and passions, and I loved watching her romance develop with... I'm not telling!!

The mystery this story revolves around was so minute that it really added no tension to the tale... it felt like there wasn't much at stake, which I know was the intention, but still, it was difficult to stay interested. Add to that how often Lynn mentioned weight--how Rachel's metabolism could keep up with a lot of food, how her friends looked older with a few gained pounds, how she wished she could drop some weight--and how often Rachel's Bible college degree was brought up for no apparent reason... again, it was very slow, and annoying at times.

All the same, it felt like a very possible story, so I appreciated that aspect. Let's be honest, though... real life can be pretty boring sometimes!

My Review:

The main character Lynn, newly single mom, didn't really care for change. And lately due to the loss of her husband thrives on routine. She completely understands that God has a right to take him home but she misses him terribly. Shortly after the death of her husband she receives even more devastating news concerning her brother Myron and his death. How much is one person suppose to take, anyway? As she gets a envelope in the mail with a letter informing her of Myron's death there is also mention of an inheritance. This takes her completely by surprise, of course.

About the time learning of the house and property that she just inherited. Her daughter Rachel returns from college with a wild idea of going on an adventure with her mom. I really enjoyed reading about Lynn and Rachel. They reminded of my daughter and I. The author did a really good job bringing the characters to life and definitely proving that even in a fiction book God's ways are still going to be higher than our own.

**Disclosure** This book was provided to me for free for my honest review from Christian Fiction Blog Alliance.

Last Chance for Justice
By Kathi Macias

If you love a great mystery, you will absolutely love this book! Kathi Macias tells a great story that hooks you in and keeps you reading.

Sometimes change is good for us. However, Lynn Myers doesn’t like change, or surprises. She must learn to lean on God in the midst of the changes occurring in her life. Thirty-five years ago she left her hometown to get married. First her husband dies and now her brother has died, and Lynn and her daughter Rachel must return to her hometown to settle his estate. But, what happens when her daughter decides she might want to stay? Can they solve the mystery Lynn’s brother was working on before he died?

The characters in this book come to life and you’ll want to live in this hometown. Rachel meets John the youth pastor and Hayden the accountant. Both want her attention. Can they help solve the mystery of the missing money?

I would love to read more in this series! Does Rachel decide to stay here to live? Will Lynn move back as well? Pick up this great book, Last Chance for Justice by Kathi Macias. See if you can solve the mystery before Lynn and Rachel do!

Bloomfield a town I could love and hate. :) No, not really. I love the small town, homey, interconnected community feeling of places like Bloomfield. I can see how that same great place could drive Lynn Myers up the wall too. Everyone in your business and meddling, knowing things almost before you do. It could definitely cause a love/hate relationship.

That in itself is part of what makes the book fun. The town itself comes to life. Lynn left it behind years ago along with all the peer pressure and community expectations. She thinks she's over it. But coming home for a visit after losing her brother puts everything in a new perspective. Especially with her daughter Rachel along. Lynn may be in the later chapters of her life while Rachel is just starting, but their both facing the same questions. Where do I belong? What does God have planned for my life?

It's in the process of helping to fulfill Lynn's brother's dying wish that they find their own answers. Last Chance for Justice is a new chance for Lynn and Rachel.

Great story, funny and captivating. I enjoyed it so much, I kind of miss Bloomfield now.

Kathi Macias’ writing in this book flows flawlessly from beginning to end. I noticed in another review that someone had the same thought that I did about the writing reminding us of the Mitford Series.
I loved the two main characters, Lynn, the Mom and Rachel, the daughter. I loved the way both of them put God first in their daily lives, the way they loved each other, and the way they opened themselves up to new adventures together.
There is an old mystery looming that needs to be unraveled, new friends and old friends to meet and renew friendships and maybe more, an estate to settle and lives to settle.
This is a very easy book to read and I would recommend it to Young Adults and Adults alike. Last Chance for Justice was the first Kathi Macias book that I have read and I now plan to read more, I would love to find out about other people from Bloomfield, plus other books she has written.

This sweetly told tale is a treat: part romance, with Rachel caught between two men, part a decades-old mystery. The small-town charm and colorful characters are delightful.
Recently widowed, Lynn Myers doesn’t know what to do now. When she is notified of her brother’s death, she and her recent college-graduate daughter return to her hometown to settle his estate. They find instructions to solve the mystery of some missing money from many years earlier, to clear the name of the supposed thief. Lynn and Rachel work together with the residents of the town, and romance definitely blooms for Rachel along the way

May God’s grace and peace engulf you all the days of your life. In Jesus Name Amen.

Where to begin with this book.
I felt that the Macias repeated herself alot in the storyline. One character would think something.. then a little later they would be sharing it with another character. It seemed that they were always eating or having tea.
The solving of the mystery of the Last Chance didn't really begin until halfway through. Right when I though that the story would develop into a great mystery, it fizzled into giving up the ending.

At first I wasn't sure I would like this book. The sentences were extremely long and word usage was awkward, but my inner voice was telling me to just wait a little bit. Boy, am I glad I did! I found myself transported to Bloomfield and could hardly put the book down. It was like a different author (or editor) took over and ran with the story. Love, mystery and going home again all combined to make this a wonderful and not to be missed book.

Although the story was charming, I found that I was looking for a more mature plot. The author put too much emphasis on building the storyline and not enough on the suspense and mystery. It seems like in the end she just threw it together. It was an easy read and had its moments, but I was hoping for more depth and not so much focus on the woes of her daughter having two men fawning over her.

Lovely story....simple, but powerful in its own way.

Lynn is a widow and her daughter, Rachel, has just returned home from graduating college when Lynn receives a letter that her brother has died. Lynn and Rachel return to Lynn's hometown to settle the estate and to solve the mystery her brother was working on before his death.

This is a peaceful novel. There is no suspenseful action. No terrifying scenes. It is just quiet and slow moving. And at the end, it make you want to get a cup of tea and thank God for how He works in people's lives. The characters are firm in their Christian belief and that is an essential part of the novel. Kathi writes a hometown tale reminiscent of Anne of Green Gales, yet with a modern-day twist. She masterfully weaves a tale of mother-daughter love, complete with small-town gossips, a sweet romance, and a bit of mystery.

Refreshing

This books evokes memories of time when life was simpler. People were able to disagree and still be respectful. There is old fashioned dating and respect in this book. Reminds us that God cares about each of us and we can always trust Him.
