Heirs of Ireland #2

In Golden Splendor

Rate this book
Irish immigrant Seamus Hanley is a lost soul, haunted by his past as a U.S. Army deserter and living alone in the wilderness of the Rocky Mountains in 1849. But after witnessing a deadly stage coach crash, he finds purpose in the scattered wreckage -- a letter with a picture of a beautiful and captivating woman named Ashlyn living in San Francisco at the height of the Gold Rush.

Moved by her written plea for help, he abandons all and sets out on an epic journey across the wild and picturesque American frontier. While being pursued by those who want to hang him, Seamus encounters fascinating characters including a young Pauite Indian who makes the ultimate sacrifice in helping Seamus to cross the snowy Yosemite Valley.

Battered but changed for the better, Seamus reaches San Francisco on Christmas Eve as the city burns in the tragic fire of 1849. But there is little time for rest, as an even greater, more harrowing adventure involving Ashlyn is about to begin.

This is the 2nd book in the Heirs of Ireland trilogy, picking up in 1849, about 3 years after the first book, Flight of the Earls, left off.

Clare has returned to New York from Ireland, bringing her siblings Davin and Caitlin with her. Caitlin becomes involved the abolitionist movement, Clare is still writing for the newspaper, and 11 year old Davin decides to set out on his own to find his oldest brother Seamus.

The main focus of this story though is Seamus; haunted by his past as an Army deserter, he is living alone in the wilderness of the Rocky Mountains when he witnesses a deadly stagecoach crash. Among the wreckage, he finds a letter with a picture of beautiful woman named Ashlyn, living in San Fransisco at the height of the Gold Rush. He is moved by her plea for help and sets out to find her, encountering danger, and some fascinating characters along the way. Little does he know that when he finally finds Ashlyn, a more harrowing adventure will begin.

This 2nd book of the trilogy had a different "feel" to it than the first one, but I enjoyed it just as much. It can be read as a stand alone story, but I recommend reading Flight of the Earls first, so that you can fully understand what motivates Seamus in his actions.

What a captivating read, from the moment you turn the cover you are in a page turner. There is action around every corner, whether it is beauty of the country side, or murder by known or unknown assailants.
We get a glimpse of the Irish Countryside, but more of the majestic western part of the United States.
We follow Seamus Hanley throughout the book, from his beginnings in Ireland to the California Gold Rush. From his rescue of a trapped horse, to the fantasizing over the picture of a woman he has never met.
We find Gods Hand over Seamus, I wanted to cry when the Indian Boy Shila made the ultimate sacrifice. God's Grace was every where, he answered prayers right and left, ones in a way that was never expected.
This book in long, but you won't mind it, in fact, I wanted it to be longer, routing for good over evil. There are even a few chuckles to be had.
I hope you take the opportunity to also enjoy the fabulous read. I am so glad I didn't let the size of this book intimidate me.

I received this book through First Wild Card Book Tours, and was not required to give a positive review.

My Thoughts On The Book: If you are a fan of reading about Ireland and its rich history, the history of immigration to America and America in the early to mid 1800’s then this is definitely the book for you. It is one of the most well written books I have read in a long time. I could not put it down and you won’t be able to either. The characters and settings are so life-like that the reader feels as if they are actually in the story.Michael Reynolds is an awesome wordsmith! He story unfolds with rich detail and color that actually breathes life into the characters and setting.I cannot wait for his next book to make it to the shelves and I plan to read the first book of this series. This book is a 5 in my book and a must read!

Reading Michael K Reynolds Book 2 of the Heirs of Ireland trilogy due to release July 15th. Definitely not to be missed!

Seamus is back in the forefront of this epic western adventure that sees him travelling from his life of isolation in the Rockies to the bustle of San Fransisco. All to answer the plea of an unknown beauty's letter he's discovered in a stage coach crash. Seamus's harrowing journey alternately had me holding my breath and heading for tissues as Reynolds imaginatively recreates the wilderness and the wildness of the characters who travel there. Not for the faint of heart!

But our protagonist has proven himself to us and to himself. He reaches his destination only to be thrust into the struggle against the raging fire and the woman he has carried in his heart. A conquest no easier than his mountainous journey to reach her is about to begin...

Adversaries and advocates from unlikely corners add to the intrigue and intensity of the plot. The increasing pace builds from one twist to the next, not only for Seamus, but the reintroduction of favourite family characters from the original book,Flight of the Earls. Absolutely captivating family journeys add the unexpected that kept me turning every page with anticipation.

Another delight. Thank you, Michael! For writing and researching.
I look forward to Songs of the Shenandoah

God comes to us in golden splendor........."

My reaction to this, the second in the Heirs of Ireland series is, "magnificent!" I was impassioned by Flight of the Earls, and equally impressed with In Golden Splendor. The author shares impressive knowledge of the history of mid-19th century America and the gold rush. It is obvious that much research went into the writing of this indepth novel. and the terrain traversed by a young Irish immigrant, an Army deserter.

Seamus Hanley's uncertain future is affected by many varied incidents throughout his search for a beautiful young woman whose picture he discovered in a letter. His travels from the Rocky Mountains to the coast of California are filled with unforgettable moments. I find it difficult to put into words the effect this novel held for me. I experienced numerous emotions throughout the reading of this book. There are numerous impressive passages. The one below took my breath away.

"There spinning beneath them, breathlessly and seemingly miles below, was a valley finely taylored in a stunning cloak of white and generously covered with snow-flocked forestry. It lay at the base of a symphony of granite that reached like grateful hands up to the heavens."

The poetic descriptions throughout this book add grandeur to adversity as Seamus traverses the mountains and unpredictable countryside, having no knowledge of what lay ahead.

I highly recommend this unforgettable novel of haunting memories that touched my heart and brought tears of both sadness and joy. This series is an impressive set of novels, books that I will read again. I can hardly wait to read book 3 in this series, Songs of the Shenandoah!

I loved Flight of the Earls, book one in the Heirs of Ireland series, so I couldn't wait to read the next installment. In Golden Splendor follows Seamus Hanley (Clare's troubled brother from book one) after his poor decisions in book one have landed him in a remote mountain area. Soon Seamus embarks on a journey of redemption where a beautiful stranger unlocks his future.

I loved the setting of this book. Pre-Civil War western America never felt so alive! Michael K. Reynolds does a tremendous job with the details. I could see the trails, feel Seamus's hunger, picture a booming gold rush town. Seamus's spiritual journey was fulfilling to read. I wanted him to succeed.

At times the plot became overwhelming--Seamus dealt with many near-death experiences which I'm sure was realistic for the time period--but I had to catch my breath as one crisis led to another with little time to process them. Other than that, this book was terrific!

I'm looking forward to seeing what the future holds for Caitlin Hanley!

In his continuing saga of The Heirs of Ireland, Michael K. Reynolds does not disappoint in crafting another fine story of the Hanley family, especially Seamus Hanley.
Seamus heads west to the gold fields and along the way, he encounters many colorful characters. For example, Winn, a pretend-preacher; Shila, an Indian boy, and a most sought-after woman named Ashlyn.
Throughout the journey west, the characters develop well and their search for gold and relationships, leads them to new love and redemption.
I look forward to the next book in the series, Songs of the Shenandoah, due out in January.

There is nothing on the cover of the book, front or back, to indicate this is a sequel. I was asked to review it by a publicity group and was disappointed that I had not read the first in the series. And you do need to read the first one to receive the full impact of this one. Much of the action in this novel comes as a result of actions in the first novel. Also, a character that impacts the end of the novel has a history that must have been told in the first novel. Part of my rating reflects the lack of the publisher informing potential readers, right on the cover, that this is the second in a series. See my full review at http://bit.ly/1932NzK.

In Golden Splendor kept me captivated from page one. No doubt a real page turner all of the way up to the last page. I really loved following the adventures of Seamus in the second installment of the Heirs of Ireland #2. I also loved to be able to keep up with what's going on with Clare, as well. I'm ready to dive straight into Book #3 to see what happens. In Golden Splendor is one of my favorites I have read of all time. Michael K Reynolds definitely is a true storyteller of Irish American history.
I highly highly recommend this book!

In Golden Splendor is a compelling read laced with lush historical detail. Michael K. Reynolds has a gift for creating a cast of characters that remind me of a Charles Dickens novel--even the most minor characters catch your attention, like flakes of gold hiding in the dirt.

Fast-paced, and transportive, In Golden Splendor captured the adventure of those brave enough to enter and explore the rough expanse of the West. At turns humorous and melancholy, I felt a connection to Seamus and the internal struggles he faced.
I've had the pleasure of meeting, and being taught by author Michael Reynolds. He is passionate about what he does, and motivated to reach his reader in creative ways.

I loved the first book of this series and was excited to dive into the next one. I honestly didn't enjoy this one as much. It had a few different storylines and some felt disjointed - like they were started and then just fizzled off.

I grew up in the Sierra Nevada mountains in the county where gold was discovered so it was fun to read the storyline that took place in many areas I am familiar with. And I now live near the Appalachian Mountains so that was also an interesting setting.

I would have loved to have more focus on the fire in San Francisco. It was practically raced past - came and went and then wasn't spoken of again by anyone in the city (besides those that were from the orphanage). It was as if no one else in the city was affected by it and it just wasn't believable at all for such a devastating event.

I'm hoping the third book brings a little more than this one.

My great grandfather was a gold miner in 1849 after landing in San Francisco in September. It was interesting to read this book that included what was going on at that time in Yerba Buena, then later named San Francisco in 1847. It was a little bit of a fluffy read, but still good. I think I'll wait awhile to read the book that follows.

This past Monday, I had the privilege of interviewing Michael K. Reynolds who penned the Heirs of Ireland Series: Flight of the Earls (January 2013), In Golden Splendor (July 2013), and Songs of Shenandoah (January 2014). It was a wonderful experience and I certainly learned a lot! Thankfully, I was prepared for the interview because he was gracious enough to send me a copy of In Golden Splendor which I now consider among my favourite books.

Appearances

First things first: the cover of In Golden Splendor is absolutely beautiful! Please judge this book by its cover! Lol We can tell people ‘til we’re blue in the face to not judge a book by its cover, but let’s be honest: we all do. Thankfully, I believe this will work in Michael’s favour.

Length

As for the length, I admit, I was initially daunted by the size of the book. Not because I don’t like lengthy reads, but because I had less than a week to read it! But I dove in and it was a wonderfully easy read. I loved that Michael wrote short chapters which, I think psychologically, makes the reading quicker.

Content

Michael did a phenomenal job with the content of In Golden Splendor. I shared with him that I often have a dislike for Christian novels because they preach and aren’t written that well, but Michael shatters that mold. The truth of God is present in In Golden Splendor, but it doesn’t ruin the story; it enhances it. We are able to see the journey of a ne’er do well Irish immigrant find God and come into his own in life. We see the beauty of love in numerous capacities and are completely taken into the tale.

Also, I love the double entendre of the title. For a nice length of the book, I thought it was solely because of the Gold Rush that makes a huge appearance in the story, but its overarching reasoning stems from…well, I’ll let you read it and find out..!

You truly fall in love with the characters that you are meant to and also dislike the ones you are meant to. You are able to see into the complexities of the various personalities, even the ones who make only a short appearance and speak few words. You are able to hear their accents; not just read them. Michael writes in these accents as well as he imitates them!

Culture Clash

One of the more intriguing factors to me was the clash between the cultures present in the mid-19th century America setting. The Irish and the Americans. The Irish-Americans and the African-Americans. The Americans and the Mexicans. The Native Americans, Chinese, South Americans, and more were all present creating a true melting pot of characters even, if they didn’t mix as we’d like them to. You see the gritty reality that was mid-1800s America. You begin to realize the depth of the political, ethnic, and cultural issues present at the time of the story. In truth, it’s a wonder our nation is still standing. Michael orchestrates all of these factors beautifully.

Extras

I love, love, love that Michael added Discussion Questions at the back of the book. It’s a small additive that makes a huge impact. It encourages people to read the book in a group and discuss it. It even includes a Prayer of Salvation! It’s positioned in a way that you can find it easily enough if you’d like to use them and you can skim over them if they’re not your cup of tea.

All in all, I adored In Golden Splendor. I can’t wait to get my hands on Flight of the Earls and look forward to the January 2014 release of Songs of Shenandoah. I encourage each of you to support Michael in his well-done endeavor and purchase your own copies of his books!

I just got the most wonderful opportunity to review an incredible new series, The Heirs of Ireland by Michael K. Reynolds. I haven't read the first book in the series, but picked up In Golden Splendor which is the second novel he just completed and it's simply a compelling historical story that you can't put down. This takes you into the heart of the Gold Rush days where people were literally coming from all over the world to get their stack at a claim in California in hopes of striking it rich.

We are introduced to Irish immigrant Seamus Hanley who finds himself trying to survive as a mountain man in the harsh winter but is failing miserably at trying to hunt game and also sell the furs for money. He happens upon a wagon accident that claims the life of the driver but leaves one horse alive. Seamus sees that the horse and contents belong to the U.S. Army and it's a mail delivery wagon. Taking the horse would automatically be grounds for hanging taking military property, but he knows if he leaves the horse behind, it won't survive. Thinking God's providence is upon him, he takes the horse and a letter on which Open Immediately is scrawled across the front. Inside Seamus finds a heartfelt letter and a photograph of a woman named Ashlyn who is pleading for help in finding her father.

Seamus believes it is he duty to aid this beautiful woman even though the letter was not addressed to him. It seems that the recipient of the letter has not be faithful in returning his response even though it appears that there is a relationship between them. Ashlyn needs to locate her father who has gone off searching for gold in hopes of providing an income to support her while she waits behind in San Francisco. But in order for Seamus to find Ashlyn he must find a way to get through the brutal mountain pass in the Rocky Mountains as winter is approaching. With little to go on in the ways of supplies, he believes God is calling him to answer Ashlyn's pleas for help and will trust God for a way to make that happen.

I received In Golden Splendor by Michael K. Reynolds compliments of B and H Publishing Group and Christian Fiction Blog Alliance for my honest review. I received no monetary compensation for a favorable review. This is my first novel by Michael K. Reynolds and the reviews from other authors inspired me to pick this one up. I am always a fan of historical fiction and think Mr. Reynolds did an exceptional job at transporting the reader in the heart and soul of Seamus Hanley who found himself a U.S. Army deserter and has been branded physically for such action. It's the ultimate game of hide and seek for Seamus to make his way through circumstances that quite literally have you holding your breath. I would have never made it as far as he did. Along the way we learn that both Seamus and Ashlyn have deep secrets that need to be resolved for past mistakes that they feel are holding them back believing the lot in life they have found is a good as it will get. However God has bigger plans that we see slow unveil during this novel. I am now a huge fan of Michael's and will be picking up the next book, Song's of the Shenandoah due out in January 2014. If you want to begin this series, you'll want to pick up Flight of the Earls first before reading this one to make the journey even more unforgettable. For me, this one rates a 5 out of 5 stars and I look forward to pick up the first novel in the series to see just how the Irish family came to America.

The second book in the Heirs of Ireland series is taking its readers into the pure adventure of the Wild West and gold fields and farther - into the land of grace and forgiveness.

The first book in the series was about the oldest of the Hanley children clan, Clare, and her journey from famine-plagued Ireland to the New World. This one is about her brother Seamus, the one of with a bad reputation and with a hidden pain in his heart. Seamus was never much loved or respected by his father, but the one moment of inattention has just crushed his heart even more than his father' s cruel words - the moment his young brother had died. From this moment Seamus doesn't believe in his worth and forgiveness. Driven by the unhappy flow of actions, he fought for U.S. and against it and even ended as a trapper in the Wild West. And there, in the postal cart damaged by the crash, he feels a push to take a letter that is not intended for him, and to open it. The unhappiness and the need of the young Ashlyn, accompanied by the photograph of her face, just seizes his heart and he is decided to make all things possible to help the beutiful unknown girl.
Ashlyn has her hands full with her little orphanage and her heart full of troubles - her father is missing in the gold fields, there are no resources to feed the children, her fiancé is unresponsive and there is also the secret...So why should she believe the handsome stranger offering his help?
And young Davin Hanley is up to the unexpected journey himself.
And all of them will experience the unexpected grace within their adventures.

This is just one good (if a bit prolonged) read! I love that the author doesn't surrender the literary part to the Christian one, as the book is catchy, readable and full of adventures to capture the attention of any reader, Christian one or not. I would recommend it for any of my friends interested to a good read with a healthy side of a food for thought. This book is the rare bird of a literature nowadays - catchy yet not fluffy, heart-touching but not an emotionally blackmailing, honest but believable.
The heroes are likeable and their struggles are (almost) real. ("Almost" goes for the horse thievery part, which I just find unrealistic.)
I could understand the pain the the Seamus's heart and also how he could use this in serving people. When you go through heart-breaking experience and you can use this as a part of your story, you can help the others well - just because you understand how it is for them.

I also like the God' s timing, which was well described in the book.

I have just two concerns - the Shila story was somehow unfinished for me. And, as a Catholic, I was unhappy about how formally Seamus (and author) treated his Catholic faith.

Having said all that - this is one interesting, good book. It was a pleasure to read it, and I recommend it deeply.
