Faerie

Rate this book
Like her mother before her, Leonie of Bosewood carries Faerie blood in her veins, a secret she harbors to protect her own life. For although the people of eleventh-century England believe in magic, their ignorance and fear have made being different a very dangerous prospect. Caught between the human and Faerie worlds, yet belonging in neither, Leonie must guard her heart…no matter how strong the temptations.

As the king’s emissary, Philippe le Peregrine has watched Leonie mature from gangly girl to alluring woman. With each encounter, his attraction grows, but he knows a match between them can never be. For Philippe hides his own secret, one that has condemned him to a life of lonely celibacy for fear of harming the woman he loves. But when powerful forces prompt them to unite against a sorcerer intent on conquering the world, Leonie and Philippe realize that only together are they strong enough to combat the evil threatening to engulf them.

3.75 stars, promoted to 4 for Simon Vance's superb narration. I enjoyed this fantasy romance more than expected, but that very graphic sex scene startled me. It seemed out of place, if spicy. That's really my only quibble. I think this author should try writing straight fantasy, with only a thread of romance running through it. She seems to have a good feel for fantasy, a strong knowledge base or background for that.

No spoilers here!

WRITING STYLE: The story is told in 3rd person via heroine and hero. I liked how this fantasy flirted with some factual aspects of Medieval England (the real king Willaim/Rufus, King Malcolm, etc). The writing is good quality, the protagonists likable, the setting vivid enough (especially Summer Land and Castle Bosewood). The plot is linear in sequence yet somewhat twisty and unpredictable. The romance / relationship was different than the norm because the heroine and the hero were both cursed or bespelled, in different ways, making obstacles to trust and love. I liked how that was resolved. Liked how the heroine (faerie-human named Leonie) stubbornly fought off the spell that distorted her memories. Good scene.

TONE: The story isn't funny or lighthearted, but the banter between Philippe and Leonie has a slightly witty edge. The feeling throughout is somewhat grim-dark (black sorcery, mind control, monsters, gholens, feral hounds of hell, etc), but always with a hopeful overtone. There are some heartwarming secondary relationships, as well as a good feeling between the lovers (eventually). It ends happily, as I knew it would, having decided this is definitely a romance.

SETTING: The story is set in about 1090 England, under the reign of King William ii (aka Rufus, aka William the Red). He's William the Conqueror's son. French-speaking Normans are intermingling and intermarrying with the Germanic-based Anglo-Saxon English. Tensions flare across the land and the king doesn't really trust any of his knights, except maybe Philippe de Peregrine (aka the falcon, the hero). Meanwhile, Scottish raiders, under King Malcolm, skirmish with the English. In some ways, the politics and witchcraft / sorcery felt like Macbeth.

SUPPORTING CAST: Good secondary characters, but the big bad villain needed a stronger backstory. Secondary characters who play the strongest roles: Rufus (William ii) King of England, the Earl de Mowbray (aka The Black Earl, aka the Earl of Northumbria), Bishop Durham, Lord Fulk of Durham (Warrior for God), an old crone, a young boy named Sigge, a maid named Ealga, and a big dog named Ilse.

Via kindle Unlimited, I borrowed the kindle ebook and Audible companion piece, narrated by Simon Vance (love him!).

As the reader is drawn into this fantastically written romance from Delle Jacobs, the first thing to be seen is an old crone…making a deal with a King. From then on the mystery, adventure and supernatural thrills come one right after the other.

Leonie is a half/human, half/faerie who truly loves to walk in the woods and be a part of nature. She had a slightly hard ‘beginning’ when her mother simply disappeared into the woods one day – running from the people that wanted to hang her for being a witch. Leonie was taken in by a tremendously wonderful family and is trying to deal with the fact that she is very much like her mother; she has powers that must be hidden in order to remain safe and not be judged or threatened by the ‘people.’

Philippe le Peregrine is a Knight – the King’s favorite, in fact, who works extremely hard to serve his country. What he wants most of all is to be left alone. He wants no fiefdom, no wife, no anything – just the ability to deal with his hideous secret and live out the rest of his life as a virtual monk.

He remembers Leonie as a tall, gangly girl, but when he once again meets up with her (because he is assigned to serve and protect her world) he meets a true woman. She is beyond beautiful...a little too beyond, as if she is far different from all the other women on the planet. She has the strength and courage of the knights themselves, Leonie is also the best archer to be seen, and proves this by besting him in front of one and all.

However, when Leonie stumbles across some seriously strange happenings, she suddenly accuses Philippe of harming her…even though the image she remembers is not actually the truth. To save her maidenly virtue, the King forces Philippe to marry her. And even though they are both beyond upset about their circumstances, when the real danger of a sorcerer in their midst is revealed, they find out that they desperately need one another in order to survive the darkness that’s about to be unleashed.

It will not be a shock to any Delle Jacobs fan that this is yet another novel that will surely be in line for more awards and accolades. Yes…it is that good. The stunning descriptions of the land, the forest - all the way to the wardrobe and diction – are dead on, making the relationship of the half/faerie and her struggling knight absolutely unforgettable!

Whether a fan of romance, adventure or fantasy, this is the book for you!

Leonie of Bosewood like her mother, carries Faerie blood in her veins, a secret she keeps to protect her own life for most in the eleventh century feared the unknown and the unusual usually opting to destroy that which they feared. Sandwiched between the human and Faerie worlds Leonie must guard her heart…no matter how strong the temptations. As the king’s emissary, Philippe le Peregrine has watched Leonie grow from gangly girl to alluring woman. Unfortunately, with each encounter, his attraction grows but because of a secret past, he has condemned himself to a life of lonely celibacy for fear of harming the woman he loves. However, when powerful forces force them to unite against a sorcerer intent on conquering the world, Leonie and Philippe realize that only together are they strong enough to combat an evil threatening destroy them and all humankind.

*** I have been a great fan of Delle Jacobs for many, many years, and in my opinion she has only gotten better with time. Jacobs work has always been both intriguing, highly original and extremely creative. She has the talent to mix high action with creative scenarios and sprinkle just enough sensuality to make you continue turning the pages from the moment you start till the very and most times surprising end.

The heroine Leonie, a half human, half faerie lived a careful life in that she always had to be aware of trying not to be obvious of her healing power when her kind heart saw suffering that she knew she could cure with her touch. Leonie had always noticed Philipe and though he was a huge man, she was attracted and had loved him it seemed forever. However she thought he didn’t like her based on how he paid scant attention to her. (Very few knew of his vow to never love again or the curse put on him by the evil being that killed his first wife.)

Jacobs threw in a big wrench to wreck the romance when a very evil incident happened to Leonie in the woods making her extremely fearful of Philipe which made for a lot of animosity between the two. However, even with the distrust that bore ill feelings between both characters I thought Philipe was a wonderful character and I found the discourse between he and Leonie traveling together was fraught with some laugh out loud moments (especially in the caves)!

Overall, you have magic, good versus evil, action and political upheavals in the a magnificent Medieval Fantasy. Loved every moment and highly recommend this book.

Enjoyable fantasy world. It kept my interest.

There are faeries with special powers, an evil sorcerer, fighting skeletons, and shades who inhabit human bodies. The faeries and creatures interact with humans.

The setting is 1093 with knights who fight for the King of England against Scotland. Leonie is half faerie half human. Philippe is an English knight. He was cursed by a sorcerer who will kill anyone he falls in love with. So for years Philippe is celibate and avoids falling in love. He and Leonie are drawn to each other. Something evil attacks Leonie.

My quibbles:
I’m all for keeping secrets in a story if the liar has a good motivation for lying. But Philippe and Leonie lied, or let others assume the wrong things for no good reason. For example, he thinks I am X so I better run away. She doesn't try to explain things. Also I wanted more development of the evil one’s motivations and actions.

The best part was the fight scene at the end. There is a happy ending.

DATA:

Could have done without the sex scenes

Legit if i never hear the words "shaft" or "nub" for the rest of my life it will be too soon. The book and story itself was great, the sex ruined it, you can have a romance book without sex scenes especially the ones in this book. Wasnt too big of a deal tho since they were bascially100% unnecessary i just skipped all of them and didnt miss any important things so 🤷

An entertaining, well-told story. I found faerie aspect and the plot interesting. Hero and heroine were likable characters and I enjoyed their interactions. Romance was ok--relationship could have been developed more. It felt like the love came out of the blue.

Didn't love it, but did like it enough to read more by the author.

Despite its fantasy-genre title, and its historical 1093 AD setting, this novel primarily falls under the romance genre. It has been a while since I last read a genre romance, so I admit that some of the language and the early nude appearances (only 20 pages in!) took me by surprise. The book isn’t overloaded with sex scenes though those that are described are more graphic than the older romance novels that I have read in the past. The plot contains some unfounded surprises that are thrown into the rushed, whirlwind of a climax, but Jacobs’ characters are likable. None of them really stand out beyond the stock genre types - strong hero, stronger heroine, some loyal servants, and even a rather magical dog. The writing doesn’t really detract or add to the story - though there are some really rough transitions between two main perspectives (though it is surprising that the hero receives about an equal amount of point-of-view). It would have been nice if the fantasy elements had been developed a bit more to make it more of a blended fantasy/historical romance.

AMAZING!
...ok, I better write more. Where has this author been and why haven't I run across her work.
The work building is stellar, Delle Jacobs plops you right back in time; a time of kings, castles, knights and Faerie.
Medieval England has never been quite so delicious now that we get to meet Philippe le Peregrine, the kings best man; tall and broad shouldered with locks of golden hair. Almost as beautiful as his bronze skin and rippling male muscular form. It is no wonder Leonie of Bosewood has admired him since she was a mere lass. But now she is grown, a wild and untamed beauty with a secret that no one must ever discover; for she is a halfling, part human and part Faerie.

Philippe has his own secrets...he has chosen a vow of solitude and celibacy, asking that he never be forced to take a wife. Why? He is now finding it difficult to keep this vow... when Leonie's wild spirit and strange beauty tempts him so...

You must read the book to find out more. This one does get quite steamy!

Meh.

Not quite sure why I kept reading this book despite my lack of interest. The synopsis and amazon sample really sucked me in. And then blarg.

Leonie is the typical strong willed heroine. Peregrine is the too handsome for his own good hero that swore to celibacy after his last marriage ended with his wife dying and him being cursed. So of course they fall in love. Duh.

I did not like the writing style. It seemed to come and go and distracted me from the story. I get it, it's set in the 1000s in ye ole England. I also would have liked a quick history lesson, but that's just me being lazy.

It's definitely a romance novel and lead to an awkward experience in a waiting room since it went from ye ole England to bow chicka wow wow in a hurry. Thank you Kindle/ebooks.

However, this book gave me one of my favorite lines ever. "The cock, the feathered kind, would soon crow."

Woo buddy, that was a struggle.

First of all, I didn't even know when I picked this up for free on Amazon that it was a romance. I knew it was going to have romantic elements, but the overall premise of the book seemed interesting enough. What is this book about, you ask? Well! Have a sit and let me tell y'all a story.

So, Leonie is an unattractive, attractive woman (because that's how they all are now, right?) who lives in her uncle's castle sometime in the Middle Ages. Leonie is part Faerie (hince the title) and she doesn't fit in because she's practically a blonde giantess who walks like a man (legit the way the love interest describes the way she walks). Leonie's problem is that she's of strong mind and will in the Middle Ages where men rule everything and women are naught but dirt beneath their boots. Leonie also, thanks to her Faerie blood, can take her bow and arrows and outshoot anyone.

Phillippe, the Peregrine, is a knight belonging to the King of England. He's hot (duh) and totally unavailable because his late wife jumped headfirst out of a tower to save Phillippe from becoming the pawn of the sorcerer, Clodomir, who also put a curse on the Peregrine after he lopped off Clodomir's head, and told him that he could never love anyone else again except for the woman he was going to kill by his own hand.

So. The Peregrine is a regular at the Leonie's uncle's castle, and Leonie is totally in love with him, but the last time he was in town she made a bet that she could outshoot him and the price was a kiss. He spurned her because he's not allowed to like women lest he accidentally kill one. Leonie was young, maybe twelve when this bet took place. She was traumatized from her embarrassment, but still loved the Peregrine.

A few years after this incident, Phillippe comes back to the castle, and sees Leonie full grown and striding around with an injured child. Phillippe is disturbed by this because no woman should have walked around with the same confidence as a man (perish the thought). He is at once completely and graphically turned on by her confidence, and totally put off. He's confused, but still challenges her to another shootout. He loses.

Later, in the woods, Leonie discovers some bone men who tricked her into thinking the Peregrine tried to kill her. Weird right? The Peregrine finds her half dead on a forest trail after she had been missing all night. He scoops her up and takes her back to the castle. When she wakes up, she has a searing headache and a deep seated knowledge that the Peregrine is her attacker.

There's some back and forth with the King about whether or not this was a real thing, and in the end the King decides that the only way to keep things from going out of control is to force Phillippe and Leonie to get married. Because that solves everything.

So then the rest of the story is Leonie running and the Peregrine always finding her. There's some other Faerie related stuff that happens, but is relatively unimportant.

I had major problems with this book.

First, okay, I realize that the Middle Ages weren't very kind to women, but Phillippe is a jackass. The northerners that raised Leonie see her strong will as an asset, but all the Peregrine sees is a belligerent woman who won't keep her hair up and incessantly turns him on despite his best efforts to not be turned on. 'Cause that's definitely the woman's fault.

Second, there are underlying bits of racism that bothered me. There is a character known as the Black Earl of Northumbria, and he was also referred to as a demon, and that his heart is as black as he is. The Earl is actually a good character (you'll see why later), but I didn't like the way he was talked about. I thought it was unnecessary that the Earl actually is black and then it's pointed out every time he shows up, and keeps getting pointed out. I don't know, it just didn't sit well with me.

Third, the actual writing wasn't terrible, but the dialogue was often dreadful. The author tried to write in the style of the period, but it often came out clunky. Especially since it was mostly just a few words like "haps" and "naught" that were used in place of the other obvious words. I see what the author was trying to do, and I appreciate the effort, but it just didn't work most of the time.

Fourth, I said I didn't realize it was a romance novel when I started it because the first sex scene came out of completely random nowhere, and took place in a dream. I was thrown off guard, though surprised that the scene itself was relatively successful. It didn't make me shake my head and roll my eyes until the fourth scene where it turned cheesy and some of the phrases really struck me as unnecessary. I was not a fan.

Overall, I would have enjoyed this book more if it wasn't a romance novel. But even then, maybe only a little bit more. I give this one a solid "meh." I wouldn't spend my money on it.

Wow. So much I didn't expect.

Wow. Just: wow. This book is a time piece set in the time of the Normans and the Saxons when England and Scotland were awash in blood and battle. Very well done in the research department. Being a fantasy, I really hadn't expected how well and truly we would be immersed in that time period and boy was it a ride! Mrs. Jacobs meshed her fantsy novel chock full of the old European myths with the morals and customs of the time that it was truly beautiful.

The story was told from multiple perspectives, though primarily from our main duo Phillipe (a knight of king Rufus)and Leone (an heiress and half Faerie). It's full of intrigue, political maneuverings, scheming parents and sovereigns, secrets, myth, and of course romance so you should get any need you have fulfilled. There are also some very steamy scenes as well as a few battles with some blood and death.

The narrator did a great job. There was no voice he did that grated or sounded awful and I enjoyed the whole ride.

As the cover says this is no ordinary Faerie tale!

FAERIE is a paranormal romance with a dash of fantasy mixed in. It's also historical, like super medieval, which usually isn't a genre I read. That might be why it took me so long to get into. Once I did though I was able to enjoy the story.

Although the story lagged at times, when it was flowing correctly it had a great pace. But then the pace was super fast at times too. It simply wasn't smooth and I'm not sure if that is Delle Jacobs' writing style. And while the story was enjoyable enough I'm skeptical about the odds of me reading his work again.

Very well written and entertaining but just not my cup of tea. I found it a bit of a slog in parts. That might be because I started it, stopped and then started it again.

The premise is very interesting, but there were elements I really wished were explained more. Like The Anwynnn King element - it was just : oh you are an anwynn King NEXT move on.....no! no no no. Explain it please. The ending was rushed which I didn't like.

Don't get me wrong it was a good book, I liked it but I just thought that there were a number of small things throughout the book that bugged me.

Totally loved it!

This is an amazing story that takes you back to the 11th century and gives you a glimpse into life in that era. Life for a halfling faerie girl, that is. The story bends and twists so many times, you just can't put it down because you need to know what happens next. I'm super grateful for the free audio with Kindle Unlimited because I could listen while I drove to work. It's an excellent book and I'm now intrigued to read more from this author.

Exceptionally well crafted

I rarely rate a book 5 stars. This one easily earns the distinction. An original world vividly described with colorful details that fill the imagination. The characters are well fleshed out with feeling. This is my first experience with this author, I look forward to future reads.

Ehh...

I don't know what to make of this book. Starts out a medium paced, set up of a mediocre, heard before story that lasts for about 2/3 of the book, slams into a couple of EXTREMELY X-rated sex scenes, especially so since the lead up was so G - rated, and then closes with a great idea of a story line that you wish the author had developed from the beginning.

There was nothing new in the story. But it was a fun adventure, nonetheless! The heroine was a half-breed that can wield a bow and arrow better than anyone else. The love interest was an older, good looking, monkish man. They were married against their wishes and then trouble ensued. There was a happy ending, literally! Some of the parts were too-in-your-face. But overall, entertaining!

Faerie

Here is another wonderful story from Delle Jacobs. She is a marvelous writer. She always makes me feel like I am there watching everything that is happening. This story is magical in sense of the word. If you like to read about romance and magic then this the story to read. I hope you will enjoy reading this book as much as I did.

DNF.

This book was just uncomfortable to read. It’s like a romance novel written by an insensitive caveman (OK that might be a bit of an exaggeration, but not by too much!). Seriously though, almost clinically graphic without any actual romance. It’s possible the plot would have been engaging once it started to unfold, but honestly I couldnt get far enough to find out.

Adventurous!

It was such a fun book to read. The characters were fun and well fitted for each part. I wanted more of the tugging war between the lovers but the story was well written as it is. The end felt a bit short or rushed. I guess it left me wanting more of the main characters.

Very Good Read

I enjoyed the book, but I thought the fight at the end was kind of a let down. The book built up to it, and then it was over. But, I did like all the characters in the book.
