This is hardcover Viking edition. It's currently available at The Open Library, but I don't know how much longer it will be up.

Wesley Dennis was a fantastic equine artist. Although this book is entirely in black and white, he really pulls out all of the stops. Although Holiday is a Thoroughbred-type horse, perhaps the best drawing is of a gorgeous draft horse in braids for a show.

This story is told in first person by Holiday the horse. That's an old narrative device, but works here. Holiday sees the farm's Dalmation strutting about with a massive blue rosette on his collar. (That's a first place rosette, UK readers). So, of course, Holiday wants one, because he wants to be the best in the world at something.

Be careful what you wish for, readers.

This was actually an unpredictable little book. Holiday is the world champion free Jumper. I had no idea free jumping classes occurred in the 1940s. Either that, or Dennis' imagination was decades ahead of his time.

The book also has great little details. Hunters (horses competing in hunter classes) whinny in Irish brogues. When Holiday is walking about after his first show, you can see in the background a hapless groom trying to physically push a balking horse into a trailer. Holiday's tack trunk has his name on it.

Awesome book for horse lovers and Wesley Dennis fans.
