Karsten Alnæesin "Herääminen: Euroopan historia 1300-1600" (Otava, 2004) on norjalaisen kirjailijan teossarjan ensimmäinen osa. Se ei välttämättä ole paras mahdollinen valinta lukijalle, joka haluaa täydellisen yleisesityksen aiheesta, mutta sujuvasti kirjoitettua ja mukaansatempaavaa historiankirjoitusta on silti luvassa kuudensadan sivun verran. Löytöretket, tieteen kehitys, voittamaton Armada, Grönlannin asutuksen katoamiseen liittyvä mysteeri, renessanssin mestaritaiteilijat, rutto ja muut kulkutaudit - kyllähän näistä aiheista kelpaa lukea!

Pidin eniten kirjan toisesta osasta "Yhdeksän kertomusta Euroopasta", jossa vakokeilaan nostetaan yksittäisiä ihmisiä tai vähemmän tunnettuja tapahtumia, ja pyritään näin kertomaan jotakin vaikkapa aikakauden moraalikäsityksistä, naisen asemasta, tapakulttuurista tai uskonnon harjoittamisesta. Varsin kiehtova oli esimerkiksi 1500-luvun puoliväliin sijoittuva "Martin Guerre palaa takaisin", jossa pikkuisessa baskikylässä koetaan dramaattisia hetkiä kun oikeus joutuu pohtimaan, mahtaako vaimonsa luokse palannut aviomies olla sittenkään se kuka hän väittää olevansa!

Luultavasti jatkan matkaa Alsnæesin kanssa vielä 1600-luvun puolellekin!

Whether this is brilliant history book or not, will largely depend on your expectations.

If you're looking for a history book that will in detail give you all the facts and dates of important European rulers so you can win every history quiz, move on and get yourself an enclycopedia.

If however you're curious to learn how the middle ages and especially what life looked like during this period, this is the perfect book. Very well written, it takes you through the important periods of these centuries: the black death, the religion-wars, the hundred-year war between France and England, the sea-adventures of the Portuguese, Luther nailing his papers on the door, the golden century for England with Elizabeth Tudor and this book even describes the horror that was the Duke of Alva (for me, being Flemish, just hearing that name makes me shiver, even though i had forgotten what exactly he had done).

It does this not just quoting a year and the facts, but it gives a lot of detail and context that is important to understand the facts. It also doesn't only on positives: Elizabeth Tudor for instance is described for what she brought to England, but he did not forget the trouble she caused for the Irish. All in all, i found it a well-balanced, well-written and interesting history book.

Herääminen on yleistason esitys myöhäiskeskiajasta ja renessanssista Euroopassa. Teksti ja argumentaatio poukkoilevat sinne ja tänne. Vaikka näkökulmat (henkilöt, mikrohistoria, keskeiset tapahtumat) on hyvin valittu ja kokonaisuudesta syntyy ihan hyvä yleisesitys, on argumentaatiossa niin paljon ongelmia, ettei lukeminen lopulta ole kovinkaan nautinnollista. Asiaa haittaa surkea suomennos, joka tuntuu enemmänkin ensimmäiseltä versiolta kuin viimeistellyltä tekstiltä. Harmi että sinänsä mielenkiintoiset asiat hautautuvat huonon esityksen alle. Silti luin 700-sivuisen kirjan aika nopeasti, miltei ahmien, joka kertoo enemmän aiheen kiinnostavuudesta kuin toteutuksen laadusta.

I enjoyed reading this book about europe´s history ! He dealt with both the big questions of the renaisence , the religious wars , kings and queens of europe but he also wrote about the simple merchant in the middle ages in europe. He wrote about the great artists and their strive and struggle . It is really a good book !!

Boeiend boek. De auteur valt echter vaak in herhaling en schrijft naar mijn mening te suggestief voor een geschiedenisboek. Bepaalde passages zijn echter wel aangrijpend en geven een goed beeld hoe het leven in die tijdsperiode moet geweest zijn.

Een synthese van 300 jaar Europese geschiedenis. Vlot geschreven en dus vlot te lezen hoewel de massa feiten en gebeurtenissen het onmogelijk maken het overzicht te behouden. Dat werkt soms frustrerend. Want wat kan je van dit eerste deel onthouden? Ik heb me vooral laten onderdompelen in de Middeleeuwse geschiedenis, zaken herlezen die al al ooit eens las, nieuwe dingen ontdekt die ik misschien alweer ben vergeten. Belangrijk was dat ik van dit boek heb genoten zoals van een roman en daarvoor ben ik de auteur-verteller heel dankbaar. Het volgende deel ligt al klaar.
