Susannah McFarlane is a successful children’s book author who, after many years working as a publisher, now spends her time writing and creating stories that kids love to read.

She is the creator and writer of the awarding-winning EJ12 Girl Hero series, the creator and co-author of the hugely popular series for boys, Boy vs Beast, and the author of the Little Mates series of alphabet books for under fives.

Susannah, who was also the original concept creator of two of Australia’s leading tween fiction series Go Girl! and Zac Power, understands kids and loves creating stories they enjoy to read. Her understanding and belief in the need for age-appropriate but fun content for kids comes from over twenty years experience as a children’s book publisher and from having worked with some of the world’s leading brands and writers. Susannah actually counts Thomas the Tank Engine, Winnie the Pooh, Tintin, and Enid Blyton as friends, not just former colleagues!

Susannah is also the founding director of Lemonfizz Media, a boutique children’s publisher that focuses on developing a small number of publishing projects across all content platforms, and a speaker on children’s publishing for the RMIT Editing and Publishing course.

She was previously the managing director of Egmont Books UK; the vice-president of the Egmont Group; the co‐owner, managing director and publisher of Hardie Grant Egmont; a contributor to the UK trade journal Publishing News; and the Convenor of the Children’s Publishing Committee and Board Director of the Australian Publishers’ Association.

a perfect book for those discovering their love to read.
EJ12 has a great story line for the whole series, and I still enjoy reading them many years after I first read them.

Emma Jacks and her friend Elle are singing along with songs from their favourite band Pink Shadows. They were dancing around Emma's bedroom with dress-up clothes on and a hairbrush as her microphone. At school Hannah, Elle and Isi are excited to tell Emma about the music competition. They want to enter their band in the 'We've Got Talent' competition. Emma is afraid of singing in front of a huge crowd and messing it up for her friends.

EJ12 secret agent for SHINE was told by A1, leader of SHINE, that the evil SHADOW had not been sending messages. They had to find out what was happening. Was Shady Lady the new lead singer of Pink Shadows in league with SHADOW? This megaband was about to have their final performance in the Decoder tour. Could EJ12 discover how SHADOW agents were getting their messages? Would she be able to perform on stage in front of a huge crowd?

Emma Jacks returns to school ready to perform in front of her school audience and friends as long as she sings as a duet with Isi. It's a perfect solution.

this book inspired 6 year old me to write my first ever short story (it was what you might refer to as fanfiction, however i was 6 and had no internet exposure and didn't know what fanfiction was. i also gave ej a talking dog with a cape. and wrote a long paragraph about how she got a phone for her eighth birthday which to me, a six year old, seemed a reasonable age for one to receive a mobile phone from their parents. no hints dropped there.) thank you susannah mcfarlane for poisoning me with the disease of putting words together to create a fictional narrative, i wouldn't be who i am without this book.

Ej12 Girl Hero book 4 Rocky Road
by Susannah McFarlane

Emma Jacks code name Special Agent EJ12 expert code-cracker in the under-twelve division for SHINE a top secret agency with a mission to stop SHADOW at every turn.
EJ12 face's the music on her new mission and gets to rock like a rock star for the night as she uncovers the code within the music from the pink shadows a top hits rock band.

but when the times comes for EJ12 to face the audience and save the day will her stage fright take the better of her or will she rock.
I enjoyed reading this again having read it a lot when I was younger I found it was still a fun read.
