Madeline isn't thrilled that her mother has signed her up for sleepaway camp for the whole summer. So Maddie arrives at camp cross, cranky, and ready for one long, hot summer. But then she spies Gabriel. It's fun watching him, noticing what he's doing, and keeping track of him. Then Gabriel spies Maddie. And he seems to have fun watching her, noticing what she's doing, and keeping track of her. What happens when a crush goes both ways? Does it have to go anywhere? Maddie is about to find out.
I really do like these books. Are they books written for adults who read children's books? No. Are they exactly what being in my head was like during my hormonal younger years (which in my case was from about age 9 to age 25)? Yes.
Summer camp is a much-beloved tradition for Maddie, but after the death of her father, she is not so sure she even wants to be there. Things get even more complicated when she develops a crush on Gabriel...and thinks that maybe he likes her back. But how can she tell? And what should she do?
While I realize that young girls probably/definitely don't need any more OMG!! BOYS!! messages in their lives, I like these books because they reflect the reality that many girls are already thinking "OMG!! BOYS!!" while at the same time demonstrating some reasonable behaviors. Like, deciding you like Volleyball or crafts more than you like boys. Or deciding you like both. Or deciding that just because you have a crush doesn't mean you have to do anything about it.
That being said, I thought there was a weird disconnect between the age of the characters and the age level the writing of the book seems to be aiming at. The girls are middle schoolers, but the writing felt more upper elementary-y...Which is not to say that upper elementary-schoolers wouldn't enjoy/relate to this, but I think an older middle school girl would find it a bit immature.
Also, can I just say that I love the melodramatic covers?
read this book sometime ago back when I was a teen... I gotta say though u may be in ur twenties.. yet reading this book never gets old.. :P I LOVE THIS 10 OVER SERIES =)))))!!!!!
This is one of those cheesy series that I love reading. It is all about crushes and girls obsessed with their crushes, nothing else. At least in this book the boy likes the girl back. In the first book, the boy, Charlie, was a jerk and the girl, Lauren, was so obsessed it was kind of sad. I gave this book a three star rating mostly because of its cheesiness.
