Danger looms large in the sequel to Haven , which Booklist called “a blend of the Gemma Doyle trilogy, the Twilight saga, and Lois Duncan’s thrillers.”
Violet McKenna is back for her senior year at Winterhaven and thrilled to be with Aidan after a long summer apart. But while their love for each other is as strong as ever, their troubles are far from over.
News of a rogue vampire on a killing spree sets everyone on edge. While Aidan is determined to stop the killer, Violet is chilled by a horrifying vision she simply must prevent...for if she can’t, two people she loves will meet a violent end.
In the midst of Violet’s fear, a mysterious newcomer enters her life—and he has some vital information not just about her past, but about her future as well. Now everything Violet held as truth is upended, and she is left not knowing whom to trust, if she is in danger, and—worst of all—whether she and Aidan are really meant to be together.

Okay....Okay....Where to even begin? I shouldn't really. I should just stay hushed about this...but SQUEAL!!!!!!!! I love this book. LOVE. Full review coming closer to the release date.
Updated! Full Review:
MIRAGE was one of those books that I couldn't wait to get my hands on. HAVEN, the first book in this series, was amazing and the countdown to MIRAGE was almost painful it was so long. But, wow, when I finally did get to read it, I was so not disappointed. In fact, MIRAGE may be even better than HAVEN, a feat I didn't think could be possible.
Violet and Aidan have spent the summer apart and are finally about to come back together at the start of the book. Violet's impatience to see him is palpable and, I must say, something I felt myself. How would Aidan be in book two? Is it possible he'd still have the same effect on her (me/everyone else) as he'd had before? Surely, not. But, oh yes. Yes, he does still have that same effect, and then some. Excuse me while I swoon.
Aidan and Violet's relationship heats up in many ways, but there is also a lot of uneasiness surrounding them too. It's not exactly written into their words, but you can feel it all the same. It doesn't help that there is a murderer on the loose, Violet's visions are increasing in urgency and she's learning more and more about her Sabbat history.
The secondary characters in MIRAGE really took a front seat, and I loved every minute of it. Tyler especially. You may remember him from book one, but if you don't, I wouldn't worry. After MIRAGE, I'm not sure you'll be able to forget him. And then there's Matthew--or Dr. Hottie as the girls of Winter Haven like to call him--he's certainly fulfilled his role in this novel as well.
I love MIRAGE didn't follow the typical "book two break-up" of so many other YA novels out there. It went a way all its own and was all the better for it. MIRAGE is a heart-pounding, pulse-racing adrenaline rush of a sequel that's packed with mystery and sexiness in all the right ways. MIRAGE left me screaming at the last page wanting more. Let the countdown for book three begin!
This was slightly better than the first book. I still don't like the romance between Aiden and Violet though. Its creepy that Violet looks like Aiden's dead ex girlfriend. I just can't bring myself to believe in the romance between them because I don't buy Aiden's feelings for her. Its pretty obvious that the only reason he's with Violet is because she's the spitting image of his first lover… His feelings for Violet aren't really genuine because they're based on another woman which is more depressing than romantic. I don't know why Violet's so cool with her looking like Aiden's dead love… in reality she would always wonder whether he was truly with her for her or for his ex. Also when they eventually have sex, it'll be weird because he'll obviously be remembering having sex with his dead girlfriend and maybe even imagining her instead of Violet - it's all so creepy and weird. Anyway, the story line wasn't all that - Violet spent most of her time moaning about Aiden whilst Aiden spent most of his time moaning about finding a cure to his vampire affliction. Oh and that whole arc with the vampire killings felt like an afterthought. It was all so predictable. Also what was the point of adding in that Megvid guy when it's obvious that Violet will end up with Aiden?? Honestly, the romance in YA books are so predictable, I don't even know why authors bother with love triangles, drama or angst when it's clear how things are going to end up. All in all, it was fairly rubbish. I might just read the next book for completions sake though if I'm able to borrow it from ye olde library.
Aidan. Aidan. And, oh yeah more Aidan. That's what we all wanted right? Well don't worry he's back and effecting as ever *insert sigh*! Kristi certainly doesn't disappoint with the sequel to Haven. It's everything we could have asked for and more. Sexy, constantly on edge, and full of thrilling moments. Mirage is a constant page turner with an end that will have you begging for the third book!
We start off back at Winterhaven, where Aidan and Violet have been apart all summer. And, they are both so happy to be back with each other. Then, Violet starts getting freighting visions about people she really cares about. Soon everything seem to take a turn towards constant turmoil: Violet isn't sure who to trust, there's a murderer on the lose, and oh yeah... her latest visions are visions that constantly haunt her. As Violet dives more into who she is, and Aidan fights more to find a cure, their senior year at Winterhaven is anything but easy going.
I truly loved where Kristi took this sequel. Violet, is a smart girl (strong too!) and I love watching her with her friends, teachers, and of course Aidan. With Violet, comes the bigger role of Matthew, aka Dr. Hottie. I loved his role in Mirage and I cannot wait to read more about him! Also, the minor characters play a big part in this series and I truly love that! One in particular is Tyler. His cockiness, athleticism, and overall demeanor totally won me over in Mirage. And of course the final boy... Aidan. Aidan is one of my favorite book boyfriends. I think he's got all the goods and then some. All throughout Haven I was rooting for him, and in Mirage that didn't change one bit. I almost felt bad for him in this one though, it seemed as if Violet and him were constantly going through some kind of trouble. Though, I'm still rooting for him and his cure! And, I'll still be expecting tons of Aidan sexiness in book three!
Kristi definitely takes readers on another thrilling journey in the lovely world of Winterhaven in Mirage. There's some parts I honestly didn't see coming and other parts where my heart dropped into my stomach. There's still secrets that need to be revealed and I cannot wait to find out what they are! I love this world and this story and I seriously cannot wait for the third book!
LOVED this book! Cool new characters, fascinating mythology, and so much more of the deliciously mysterious Aidan Gray!!! If you loved HAVEN, you won't be disappointed with MIRAGE! Can't wait to get my own signed hardcopy and add to my Winterhaven collection.
And now the "official" review:
Local Westchester resident Kristi Cook is back for her second installment of the HAVEN series (Simon Pulse), MIRAGE. If you think vampires are done, think again … because the mysterious—and sexy—Aidan Gray has returned to print and is in fine, fine form.
Back at Winterhaven—school for “gifted” paranormals like Violet McKenna—things aren’t perfect even though they should be. A dangerous killer is leaving a trail of dead bodies, and Aidan and Violet need to work together to stop him before it’s too late. Even though their relationship is stronger than ever, doubts begin to creep in, pushing them further and further apart, and as Violet trains to become the vampire slayer she was born to be, she begins to question everything … including her trust in Aidan.
MIRAGE is the thrilling sequel to HAVEN, filled with old friends and new ones, an electrifying new plot chock full of mystery and intrigue, and a deliciously forbidden relationship between vampire and vampire slayer. It’s the sequel you won’t want to miss! This book will not disappoint. MIRAGE will keep fans of the series satisfied and wanting more!
I did like this book just about the same as the previous it had the same problems as well plot was way too slow it needed to move at a much faster rate. I still liked the characters my opinion of any of them has not changed I still liked Violet and Aidan even with all of the things that happen in the story. I liked the plot of the story even with it moving at a very slow pace. I liked Violet finding out more about herself and Aidan really trying hard to find a cure for his vampirism. so overall I liked this book will finish the series at a later date.
When I started this series. I didn't think I would like it. I was totally wrong. This was sooooo much better than the first book. I really enjoyed this book and I can't wait to read Eternal by Kristi Cook.
I liked this, it was an easy read. Aiden wasn't the best boyfriend ever in this story, but Violet stayed loyal to him anyway. Tyler, Matthew, and Jack were all a bit irritating.
I loved this sequel to Haven just as much as the first one. It did not lose momentum at all. I can't wait to read the third book and find out what happens next.
Mirage is everything a sequel should be. Introduces some new characters, keeps us updated on the characters we love, introduces new obstacles to the characters and is a continuation of the story we have a connection to which is why we are reading the sequel right? Kristi does all this and more in Mirage.
After being separated from Aidan all summer long, Violet can't wait to not only start her senior year at Winterhaven, but be reunited with Aidan again. Of course, the wonderful feelings of reuniting doesn't last long because Violet's visions start showing her horrifying things, however she isn't sure if she just had a vision, or if it was a nightmare since she was sleeping at the time. Violet ends up working with "Dr. Hottie" when he tells her he has the same gift she does, and he helps her learn to control her visions so she can understand better what she is seeing. I loved getting to know Matthew aka Dr. Hottie better and loved that he was more involved in this novel.
Aidan is once again relentlessly trying to find a cure for his condition and is in the lab constantly working on his experiments. The scary part is that he is still using himself as a guinea pig. And, as if all this isn't enough Violet also finds out more about the prophecy regarding who she is and what is meant for her and it could mean that she and Aidan will not share a forever like she dreams.
While there were parts of the novel that I saw coming, it held my attention and excitement throughout. I loved that Mirage made me feel a plethora of emotions. I sighed at the romance, laughed at funny parts, and got teary at the ending. That cliffhanger ending is one I didn't expect, and combined it makes for a read that I loved. I am a big fan of Haven the first book in the series, and I am happy to report my love affair with the series continues. I can't wait to see where the amazing Kristi takes us next. I am completely under not only the "Aidan effect" but the "Haven series effect"!
I really love this series. A boarding school for psychics, a girl who’s destiny is to kill vampires, and a really hot vampire who’s ambitious to for the cure for vampirism. Not your typical vampire book, but kind of typical for the paranormal romance + boarding school genera (Similar to Hex Hall, Vampire Academy, Dead Beautiful…ect.). I really love paranormal boarding school books. So, in this book Aiden is really eager to find the cure to vampirism so he can be human and live with Violet and grow old together, so he starts injecting himself with this serum he’s working on. It seems to ward off the bloodlust, but after a few changes in the serum, so ill-effects appear. And also, there’s a “Vampire Stalker” on the loose in Manhattan. Murders that seem like they were done by a vampire, but could just be mimicking a vampire. This book introduces 2 new characters: Tyler, a micro-tellie guy who’s a really great fencer, and Matthew Byrnes, a science teacher who’s a precog and Violet’s new mentor. Tyler’s a bit of a egotistic player, and Mr. Byrnes is trying to help Violet deal with her visions. I would go as far as to say that any love triangles develop between them, Violet and Aiden, but they do make Aiden a bit jealous. Violet only has eyes for Aiden. He does have the Aiden Effect (which I actually got a pin from the author at RT that say “Aiden Effect” on it.) This book has some really great mystery and who-done-it in it. I can’t wait till the next one comes out. This is a trilogy, right? I wish it was a quartet. Aiden is the new, improved Edward (and not sparkly and creepy). Cover Art Review: Really simple, and to the point. Mirror for mirage. Love the butterfly. And love the title.
Mirage is the second instalment in author Kristi Cook's Winterhaven trilogy. When I read the first book Haven last summer, I clearly remember reading it within a few hours. I loved the characters, the plot, Aidan, everything.......Ohhhhh it was fabulous! So when I was trying to decide which book I was going to read out of my stack of TBRs, I said, "Caitlin...be honest....you must read friggen MIRAGE!" I am glad to say that I was not disappointed- Mirage was a hot and addicting sequel.
I continued to love our heroine Violet in Mirage. Both her visions and relationship with her vampire boyfriend continued to bring along issues that I think she handled with ease. This was especially apparent in the last few pages of Mirage. There is a lot that happens in the conclusion that I felt Violet dealt with a lot better than I would have expected! In addition to her mental strength, I also loved seeing Violet continue to work hard at school and take the time to hang out with her friends. It might seem very random, but I loved seeing her making these normal, every-day things a priority.
The romance in this series continued to make me swoon....a lot....Aidan, Violet's dashingly handsome beau, has both a romantic and dark side that makes him alluring and hot as hell. Small things like the way Aidan refers to Violet as "love" just make me want swoon over and end it all! His supernatural vampire trait also makes his character that much more addicting! Both him and Violet make an incredible duo- and I'm not just saying that because of the awesome make-out sessions we all get the pleasure of reading....I swear ;)
I didn't really remember much from Haven except that I enjoyed Violet's character, I was in love with her boyfriend Aidan and the story swept me away. Getting back into the Winterhaven world was easy though. There was enough recap to catch me up but not take away from the story. It continues on as the new school year is starting, and keeps dealing with the issue of the cure, and other plotlines from Haven. There are some steamy moments with Aiden and Violet and I loved those. There was also reasonable doubt placed in Violet's head, and I like that she pushes for the truth despite the consequences, and that she loves and accepts even when she finds out the truth. There were some new characters and also some rocking returning secondary characters, and I also enjoyed getting to know them better in this one. There are hints at a love triangle/square thing, and a bit of flirting going on, but I am glad that it didn't go beyond those hints. But I am glad that it explored that line with boy and girl friendships and how those work, and can be confusing and cause serious jealousy. I really enjoyed this sequel and flew through it.
Bottom Line: Great sequel. Loved being in Violet's head again, and swooning over Aiden.
Another good story carries over into book two, with A LOT of unanswered questions/unresolved situations at the end.
The gang is back at Winterhaven for their senior year in high school. Violet is excited to see Aidan again. All summer she stayed at her grandma's house so she hasn't seen him in a long time. And he is still working on a cure so he can no longer be a vampire.
This book brings in a couple new characters. Tyler, a senior who came from a sister school and Dr. Hottie as the girls call him, a new teacher on campus who insists Violet call him Matt when he's helping her on weekends hone in on her gift of seeing visions of upcoming events.
These two characters do play an important part of the story, as I believe they're both trying to get Violet's attention away from Aidan and on themselves. Also, there's a vampire stalker in Manhattan, as people are being found with puncture wounds in their necks and near death before being found and taken to the e/r for blood.
This was another good story and it ended with a cliffhanger. Will Violet and Aidan end up together or apart? And what will happen when they graduate and she goes off to school? And will he ever find a cure to reverse the effects of being a vampire, or will he die trying?
Mirage is the perfect sequel to Haven. Mirage leaves you in suspense and wondering what's going to happen next. Kristi Cook introduces you to new characters and they blended it right in with the rest of the Winter Haven Crew. I really enjoyed these new characters. They create new chemistry with Violet and her friends, which I really liked.
It's senior year at Winter Haven and the crew is just coming back from summer break. But senior year won't go as easy as planned. A chain of unfortunate events occur, which shakes up the very core of Aidan and Violet. While Aidan continues to work in the science lab, Violet's visions are coming on strong. Our Winter Haven Warriors are on full effect!
Kristi went out her way to make sure that Mirage and its characters entertain you. I caught myself laughing a few times and also trying to play detective as well. Mirage is an easy and fast paced read. I am looking forward more now to the last book in this trilogy. Mirage is a definite Good Choice for Reading!!
4.5 stars out of 5 I LOVED IT, LOVED IT. Oh my god the end just left me excited, speechless, stupid, screaming, crying and wanting more. There HAS to be another book, I need to know what happens next. Okay, I can't believe the whole Sábbat/Megvéd thing, I mean Dr. Byrne?! Oh sweet lord, even though I'm not gonna lie I kinda suspect it when they found out about the legend and the mark, it was pretty obvious. I somehow though Violet was gonna kill cute-and-sweet Aidan Gray because of her visions, but that means there's more story to read right? I NEED to know what happens with Aidan oh! Anyway, like Vi I think there's something supicious about Tyler, don't know what though, but I feel like he's got something to do with the serum and the way Aidan acted. I don't know why people compare this story with “Twlight”, because it is pretty different you know? It may be about vampires but the stories are nothing alike. Whatever, talking about Winterhaven I really like the events of this book, it kept you alive and wanting more. Can't wait till the next book. Hurry up pretty please?
Frankly, the general plot is predictable. Our heroine is the usual character: beautiful, smart, strong without effort, and attractive to every male she encounters. All of her guy and girl friends magically get together to make the perfect cluster of couples for the group. Ultimately, she's a flat character. I found it hard to really appreciate the book simply because I knew what would happen already. The mystery behind the topical girliness is fairly interesting and some of the supporting characters are unique but ultimately the simple fact that everything in this book goes so accordingly to plan, that everyone is perfectly beautiful, smart, and strong, makes it hard to stomach. I get that it's a book about psychics and is unrealistic by nature, but the relationships and the drama are simply too unbelievable. I will probably read the next book because I want to know how certain mysteries are answered, but I won't be reading it for the romance. If you were happy to let the story rest with Haven's ending, you can skip this sequel.
I loved Haven so i was pretty eagerly waiting to read Mirage too.. And yes i loved this one tooo...Aidan and Vi's story got more and more complex than making it simple.
And now there's some out there who's trying desperately trying making Aidan as bad and make him and Vi separate.I have my guesses who they can be but i am not sure. And the entry of Tyler is no less of suspense and so the new revelation of sabbat history(I was pretty shocked to know about it)!
I thought there will more clue's as to whos doing it but it wasn't.I was really sad after reading the end...but i am sure i will find more action in the next book and hope Vi and Adian gets united again...and we would know more about Aidan's heritage and how will that be effected to all..!
Though this was not what i expected i surely enjoyed reading it...hoping for little more action maybe?Alas i will wait it in the next book eagerly!
I'm officially annoyed with Violet and Aiden. It seems in this day and age that more girls are realizing that you should never ever change yourself just to please a boy. The same holds true for boys, but Aiden seems to have missed that memo. Can a person survive if he alters his very nature, or will he invariably lose himself? I had a little problem believing that Aiden really needed to change himself from a vampire into a human this very instant so that he can stay with Violet: One, it's inconsistent with someone of his age; and two, he is a somewhat heroic figure acting like someone with OCD. I didn't buy it and because of that, Mirage lacked suspense for me...it just kind of petered to its obvious conclusion without an actual resolution. I still enjoyed the book, but I don't think it was what it could have been with stronger character motivation.
Plot moved faster than book 1, that's for sure. Significantly less cringey, and the main character seems to be toughening up as compared to the whiny, lovesick sap we saw in book one.
Overall the storyline seems very weak and flimsy, and certain dialogue/scenes were so redundant they became embarrassing to read. Gave this 2 stars because it didn't make me wish I was illiterate as often as book 1 did.
Excited to finish this goddamn trilogy! Here's to another shitty love triangle, lame conversations that go absolutely NOWHERE, and another predictable, boring ending.
Is it really so hard to write a female protagonist that isn't whiny, spoiled, and insolent? Violet is so unlikable. Really every character is bland and mundane. I can't even manage to care about Aiden. More detailed review when I finish the third book.
I wish I had the ability to read faster because it makes me mad that I need to spend more than an hour on this book but it’s my fault too because as much as I hated on Haven - the 1st book, I was curious at how Kristi could redeem herself from the boringness and moping around that was in Haven.
Admittedly, it was a better read, time went by faster and I found myself turning the pages in curiosity. It’s STILL NOT very good because Violet is still moping around a lot. But I give props to Kristi for trying to make her seem likeable and independent because she still stayed (though too easily and unbelievably) a genius top student and winning fencer of the All Ivy team. Even if she was still horny and pining for Aidan.
Violet’s still fainting about and we’re going to hear a lot of people asking her ‘are you okay? You look so pale. Do you need water?’ And it’s super annoying but she brushes it off better this time so I respect that. Aidan’s STILL on his quest to cure his vampirism and she gets that now - allotting time for her too good to be real friends and studies and cue Tyler - the new hot (of course) flirtatious guy who’s also into fencing and who just transferred from Summerhaven (yes, Winterhaven has a sister school) and thankfully he’s a good distraction for Haven and ignition for Aidan’s jealousy.
Violet tries to take control of her visions and successfully replays them to hone in on clues so she can try to stop it. Her friend group is also starting to look less perfect - Kate breaks up with her long term bf Jack. Cece hooks up with Tyler who then hooks up with Kate, causing a strain. Marissa who appeared the most hostile in book #1, got a boyfriend who plays in an emo punk band and that’s out of character for her ! And they spend less time fawning over Violet and we see them living their lives which was great.
I also appreciate Kristi’s efforts in making Violet’s attempt at thwarting her visions from coming true more logical (UNLIKE BOOK #1 ffs thank goddd) We see Violet making better choices now - she first had a vision of Whitney (her bf before all of this btw) being preyed on by Aidan, and he looked like he was going to attack her, suck her blood and all. But that can’t be true right? Aidan’s lovely, trying to be in control, has principals! And he’s good and loves her. He would nEvEr do that. She tries though to revisit this vision with the help of her new guidance counsellor - Dr. Hottie/Dr. Bryne - who’s equipped to help her because he too has sees precognitions of bad things happening just like her.
She isn’t able to replay it unlike her other visions and chalks it up as a dream. Logical. Also, the scenario would’ve happened in the wintertime at a park. But she had no plans to see Whitney. It was Whitney who showed up at her door step unannounced (and I thank the author for building their friendship enough for this to happen believably). She also gets a call from Trevors warning her that Aidan was OTW to her, but acting very weirdly/dangerously. (Trevors is Aidan’s vampire butler and has been for years now - Aidan killed some evil vampire who turned him and killed his wife, and was imprisoned 20 years for that. OF course Trevors pledged his loyalty to him) This freaks Violet out and she calls Whitney to leave the apartment immediately though forgetting to inform her *not to run to the park ! ! Oopsie but a believable Oopsie.
She calls her Megvad. Introducing a ‘destined vampire hunter mate’ who is most often always a MALE, and are to be companions to Sabbats - the female vampire hunters. They don’t do anything except offer their presence and support to them lol. And it’s Dr Hottie himself :D - and he manages to make it to NY in minutes to save the situation :D (hooow now)
They all get there on time to see Aidan, eyes red rimmed and face of hunger, stalking at Whitney. Matt urges Violet to use her stake on him but she of course resists his suggestion & her own urge to kill and instead, talks Aidan out of it. He is horrified to learn that he’s been the infamous vampire Stalker that has been murdering humans and leaving puncture wounds unhealed.
Why that complicates things a lot. And I don’t forgive you Aidan - even if it seems like you were under your serum spell. And I won’t forgive you too Violet, if you went with him. Kristi leaves us at that cliffhanger, and Aidan threatens to turn himself in to the Tribunal - aka the vampire rule upholders.
Now I wish I could have hours of my life back but I know as much as I don’t really like this book, I HAVE to read Eternal. GDI Kristi. At least she knew how to pull us in. I’ll give her that.
Mirage (I don’t know why it’s called mirage there seems to be no correlation to the book at all) has some romantic scenes though not very much. Aidan is in one of her class and with Tyler’s presence, we get to see hi, being jealous and possessive with Violet. Now we also see other character dynamics playing out and that’s BETTER content than full mopey pining for each other content. It’s a fairly good filler book and provides space for development - though the new love lines and vampire hunter assistant mate thing was…a laughable development. Romance junkies will eat. it. up. I’m sure.
