The Naked Truth

Rate this book
The Naked Truth is the true story of my summer as a live-in worker at a popular nudist resort. It was at the end of the 1970's when I was 18, the summer between high school and college and I needed a job. I was a small-town girl, naive and unsophisticated in the ways of the world, my heart and rampant nudity. These are all true stories of what happened that unforgettable summer.

Quick, entertaining read with some pretty humorous stories about a young woman working at a nudist resort for the summer before she heads off to college.

Spoiler alert here, but just a couple of thoughts. The author acts as though she was innocently looking for adventure and should be commended for her open mind and willingness to actually work and live in a place others would deem a semi- freak show. But I can understand why the residents were not big fans of her. It's clear after these stories that she wasn't just there to work, but to observe the weirdos and get some juicy stories that she could tell later on - perhaps she could even write a book about it! For the residents it was their way of life, and they were simply living.

After hearing Lisa Brandt, the author, talk about "The Naked Truth" on our local radio station yesterday, I had to download it. I'm so glad I did! A quick, hilarious read that looked lightly at some very awkward situations.

The book chronicles the summer of 1980 which the author spent working at a Naturist resort when she was in her late teens. I don't know too many student jobs out there that led to the predicaments that Lisa found herself in, but I'm definitely glad she shared!

Lisa Brandt is a familiar radio voice in Toronto. Quite interesting to read of her experiences working at a nudist resort. This would have been over 30 years ago in my estimation, and times have changed a fair bit.

Brandt presents a viewpoint from the view of a younger girl who had no interest in the lifestyle herself. Just a summer job. Yet it is a microcosm of the world in general, nudists are everyday people, you have the good, the bad and the ugly everywhere. But to each their own. The lonely ex-principal in the book was clearly out of line of course.

I'd probably have had a similar point of view as the author if I had been working there every day as opposed to someone enjoying the freedom as a visitor. The mundane everyday work world would have negated the novelty fairly quickly. I just would have felt strange not "going native" at least once.

Just a short e-book, file under "unusual summer job experiences".

I Totally enjoyed this book. It brought me right back to that day when I together with my exhusband and a friend of ours dared to venture into the Four Seasons Nature Resort to see the "Miss World" (naked world) pageant taking place there. As I laughed through part of Lisa's account of her "working" summer there I also totally identified with her sometimes awkward but nevertheless stalwart determination to keep her clothes on, to which she succeeded I might add. Very entertaining read!

This is a short, fun read. I laughed out loud in several places. It took me back in time to my own late teens/early twenties - those years when you learn so much about yourself, and about others. Well written and totally entertaining! Loved it!
