Aberdeen Pack #1

Pocket-Sized Prince

Rate this book
Iben Khenti knew he was an alpha by the time he learned to walk. Unfortunately, due to his small size, no one ever takes him seriously until it is too late. Having lived over two hundred years with a wolf that refuses to accept anyone that Iben is interested in makes for a very lonely life, and one that is quickly coming to an end. Iben is losing control of his wolf, and if that happens, the bloodshed will be unimaginable. Iben needs someone to counter his feral nature. He just never expected to find it in the omega of his new pack. When Zack Evens is sent to welcome the new alpha into pack lands, he could think of a million other places he would rather be. When Iben steps down from the plane, Zack is positive that there has to be a mistake. He is all of five feet seven and a hundred and thirty-five pounds. When Iben shows interest in him, Zack is positive that the alpha is just like the one that had abused him. He can't help but show every bit of disdain he feels for Iben, putting them both in a dangerous situation that could cost them not only the pack but their very lives.

This was different! I loved the fact that we got the ‘big’ bad alpha as a small, skinny dude and the omega as the bigger guy. Throw all stereotypes out the window!

Zack isn’t too sure about the new alpha. He had some really bad experiences with the old alpha and he is sure the new one will be just as cruel. But then he meets the new alpha, Iben, and Zack couldn’t be more surprised to see he is this short, skinny guy.

Iben is used to being underestimated because of his size. That doesn’t bother him, since they will all know soon enough what kind of alpha he is. What Iben knows for sure is that he wants the tall, sweet omega. But it looks like Zack doesn’t want anything to do with alphas….

These guys were adorable! I loved that Iben was small but powerful and Zack was big but sweet. The big issue in this book was getting the pack to believe Iben was not the cruel alpha they were used to and to get Zack to admit he had feelings for Iben. We had some lovely hurt/comfort with both of them comforting the other one when it was needed.

It was an action-packed short story with some wonderful sexy times (an alpha who is not afraid to top AND bottom, yay!).

I can’t wait to read the rest in the series.

The short version is that, for me, this is a werewolf book with a difference that made me smile, as well as follow the developments with great interest. The main characters couldn’t have been more different, and I really liked that the alpha defied all the preconceived notions present in so many other books in this genre. As for the plotline, that was pretty "standard – new alpha comes in to take over pack in trouble", but adding the character differences and somewhat unusual internal conflicts made this a very enjoyable read for me.

Iben is the alpha with a difference. He is small and has some very endearing psychological traits that made me like him from the very start. While he is strong enough to hold his own, even seems to have some mysterious "extra" powers which I would love to read more about in a future sequel, he doesn’t believe in violence. He knows he wants Zack from the very start, but he does not use violence or coercion to make him submit. I thought the difference Iben makes between his wolf (the wilder side) and his man (the civilized side) was great, very explicit, and believable. The man is in control here, not the wolf; the man behaved like one, not like a hormone-driven macho. Very refreshing!

Other than for his physical size, Zack is about as bratty an omega as you can expect. He has reason to be afraid of alphas, and his experiences in the past were bad, but when he rebuffed all of Iben's efforts time after time and just didn't want to admit that this guy might be different, I was ready to climb into the book and tell him what’s what, I mean, honestly! For all his physical strength, Zack is the one held back by his way of thinking and behavior that he needs to change – a lot!

If you enjoy werewolf stories with slightly different characters, if a new alpha coming in and helping a previously terrorized pack recover sounds like an interesting plot to you, and if you enjoy very hot man-on-man action once the two main characters get their act together, you will probably like this book.

Rounded up from 3-1/2 stars.

Reread 2021: I’d forgotten how far off into drama-lama land this book veered off into. And, for pity sake, canines don’t roar. Rounding down for accuracy.

The story unfolds when Iben Khenti arrives to assume the alpha position of the Aberdeen Pack whose previous alpha had used abuse, intimidation, beatings, and killing of those who opposed him to keep them in line. Zach, a low level enforcer, is sent to greet Iben knowing that this is intended as an insult to the new alpha only to find out the new alpha isn't offended and actually treats Zach courteously and with respect. That is until he is alone with him and discovers the new alpha intends to sexually use him just as others of the pack have in the past.
Iben never thought he'd ever find his mate so when he arrives at Aberdeen and sees his soul mate waiting to greet him he knows that fate has finally smiled on him before it's too late. When Zach makes it clear he's unwilling to have sex with Iben he's resigned to spending the rest of his life alone. That is until circumstances occur that put each of them and the entire pack in danger. And Zach realizes he may loose Iben before he has a chance to find out if what he feels is love.

I think I'm in love. This book is written by a new to me author who really knows how to work a story line and cast of characters that jump out at you from the start. Iben is an ubber alpha and knows it. I love that the author created this compact guy who kicked ass when he needed to yet had a sweet caring side for those people he cared about or loved. And Zach. While this character did irritate me, I still got on the bandwagon when he finally came into himself and showed the power to be had when he came into his own. These two were destined for each other whether they knew it or not.

As to the man on man action scenes. Quality erotic scenes that I would have appreciated more if they had been more developed. I get that in the beginning of any relationship the lust factor is there but guys need the slow sensual sex as much as women do so there really should have been at least one intimate prolonged scene. Just as I was getting into enjoying the play between these two the scene ended. **pout**
I do have to say though that there are a couple of cuddling scenes that was so sweet and endearing that I do have to admit to having that ahhhhhhh moment that caps off a loving moment between the two. Now that's what I'm talkin' about. ☺

Did I have issues with this book. Sure. But you know what? Every once in a while I read a book that I loved enough not to care about or point out the negatives as, in the end, I didn't care. AND I really want the author to write follow-up stories for Djal, Rory, and Sitka. PLEASE!!!

When I read the blurb on this book, I thought "Hmmm...two things I love: Hot M/M romance and shifters!" So, after reading , I'm thinking "Hmmm...This was definitely different."

Originally I only gave it 2 stars but decided to bump it up to 2.75 and round to 3. It wasn't that it was bad, actually, I enjoyed the story. It was just...different. Certainly a different take on shifter mates where they could choose their mates instead of a predestined thing like most shifter books.

Another difference was Iben, who is the new Alpha of the Aberdeen Pack, was a small man. Usually we see big, beefy alphas. However, his wolf was huge. And, he definitely had alpha magic etc. The shifters are born male and can only reproduce with human females. Any females born are human. Thus, it makes it easy for it to be okay to be gay.

Zack was an omega...meaning he could help control the emotions of the pack. However, what was really...different, was he was the Alpha in the bedroom with Iben. It was very strange to me and I had a hard time wrapping my head around how Iben could separate his human self from his wolf in that aspect and allow another wolf to dominate him.

It took a while for Zack to accept Iben as his mate and I was a little disappointed in how it all came about. I would have liked to have seen it handled a little differently....lots of miscommunication that leads to angst.

So, I sort of enjoyed this but it was just different..

Oh boy, there was so much DRAMA!
It was 2.5 stars really. I thought it would be better.
There was a reason why I don't read f/m harlequin romance stories and it is because they are simply too stupid. well, most of them. This book is different than every shape-shifter book I've read and although it kept me curious I'd put it on a shelf with m/m harlequin stories :/

Why it was different? well, It was the first time i read about alpha reading auras and having a power of telekinesis (i don't know how else i can call an ability to throw ppl across a room without touching them...). What is more, normally alphas in their human form are big, tall and very masculine guys and here we have a "pocket sized" man with eyeliner... Moreover, in all the books I've read werewolves lived as long as humans and Iben is 200 years old!

I liked the blurb and I liked the idea of new alpha coming to the pack with a lot of problems and solving them all, but it didn't feel natural for me, it was all forced somehow. It was easy to read, but everything was plastic, artificial, there was no real life there...

I'm all for brainless fun and this author is like a cheesy straight to DVD type author. An impressive backlist of really simple and one dimensional characters, but hey without some brainless reads we'd all be crying a river somewhere. This is a typical shifter story about mates. Alpha is a little guy but packs a punch, overthrows a horrible alpha and inherits his pack. There he meets his mate who refuses him because he doesn't trust the new alpha and he hates not being asked and always being used. Overall it's a forgettable read but I can't say it wasn't fun in a (bad) way. I liked the characters to a certain extent, but there seemed to be a lot of bawling and melodrama but hey you expect that here. There is a market for these types of books and they are brainless reads without any substance, but as I said they are okay to read for some fun.

The best book Stormy Glenn has written in about two years. Until the last 2 chapters. At which point it turned into a stereotypical Stormy Glenn book and everything just went south.

Would have given this book a 4, except the last two chapters killed it.

OMG! OM effing G!!! I've always love Ms. Glenn but this just makes me want to put her a darm pedestal. Been looking for a book like this for a while now and do i LOVE this! no battered mate or soap opera bad experience to swear off love, there's just an unconventional alpha who finds a mate with a surprise but welcome attitude and the in betweens that got them together & a battered pack who knows when they got something good will fight to the teeth to keep it. sometimes things just need to be kept simple. this was just ahhhh LOVELY

I enjoyed this because it was a bit different. The werewolves were a bit different, and Iben was different than other alphas that we normally read about. I thought the story was just OK and things seemed a bit overdramatic for me. Still, will look forward to who is in the next story.

Hm. Tricky.

First: Mates by choice, not fate. Yes!

The first few chapters were brilliant. Starting with Iben’s first dip in the lake, some of the phrasings became a little repetitive, but to be honest? I loved the story and the characters too much to care about the intricacies of the writing.

Sadly though, this was also when things began to break down a bit. Zack’s reaction to their first intimate encounter was over the top. And the explanation we later found in his thoughts did not entirely mesh with what we knew about the previous alpha’s rule and Zach’s life under him. Since if Zach ever denied the ex-alpha’s advances, how would he even still be alive?

The measures Iben took were, of course, extreme, but no less impressive for it. The story drew me in again, except for minor blips, such as: Sissy is a human woman. And she does wolf howls with her siblings? Well, maybe that’s part of being born to a wolf father (I do dig that all wolves are male by default) and maybe that’s why she’s apparently not aging faster than her siblings. None of that was explained in any way; I am just taking wild guesses here at how the humans work in the context of wolf families.

Anyway, up to that point I was still fully ready to hand four stars over for this story, no questions asked. And then it happened.

The moment the mating is through, Iben turns into your usual bottom as seen in countless shifter stories with strong role division, right down to being virginal. Seriously, he becomes all submissive and easily scared and… I am disappointed. The concept of a small, powerful alpha? That’s a good thing. And I do get what the author is trying to do here, with creating this dichotomy within Iben. Sadly it results in the exact kind of pairing we’ve had a bazillion times before. It’s character-breaking instead of allowing for a duality.

So no, I was not happy with Iben shown trembling and scared of the council after that, nor of Zach starting to carry him around more often than not. Or of Zach’s disrespect towards Iben in front of others, including making him into the laughingstock and lording his dominance over him. Yeah, Zach does lip-service at the end there but it just does not fit with how he actually behaves.

Is this really the only way the author can handle a small-figured protagonist? By turning him into “the girl” except when he needs to chomp down on villains? Is this kind of relationship (buff guy in control, little guy seeking comfort) really all she can do?

I would hope not. I dimly remember instances where she broke that mould, but I might be mixing her up with other authors.

Well, I still enjoyed most of this and for that reason I won’t let my disappointment ruin the whole thing for me. I suppose even with that character-break it’s still a nice enough story. Certain illogicalities notwithstanding. It’s fantasy; I pretty much expect lapses in logic from a particular type of book.

Review is at Lasha's Paranormal M/M Reviews

Stormy Glenn’s paranormal books are a secret pleasure that I slip in periodically to my reading/buying habits. When I want a really enjoyable shifter or vampire novel, she’s the author I turn to. In Pocket-Sized Prince, Ms. Glenn once again weaves a charming and quirky tale of werewolf mates and their struggle to be together.

Zack Evens is a low-ranking enforcer in his pack. His family was banished and he was forced to stay on when his old Alpha was deposed and he’s been alone ever since. The current Alpha and his inner circle have been abusing pack members ever since until Zack’s Alpha challenges the wrong wolf — and loses — causing a leadership change. (For those with triggers, there is mention of past abuse, but it is not on-screen or extremely graphic).

Sometimes I buy books spontanously, without reading reviews, without checking them beyond the cover and the short description. When I do that, I am in the mood for a specific book or setting, and I think that the book fulfills it.

Two men, shapeshifter, alpha and omega - they all ticked my boxes. And admittedly there were some good moments and the characters were likeable, the world interesting.

So why did the authoress decide to go over the top in every single scene so much that it made me cringe? Worse, I kept waiting for romance, but there was none (or at least none I was able to recognise). If the characters had just a few more days to get used to each other, to make them at least a bit emotionally invested into what is at stake. But I think there was less than 24 hours between meeting and "the catastrophe" in the middle of the book.

Sometimes, "Wolf" is simply not enough of an explanation.

2015 Review ...

This one didn't hold up well when re-read ... lots of inconsistencies jumped out at me and I found the angst didn't really hang together well either ... biggest WTF-ery was when Zack was abducted by Dawson ... I was like "why?" ... then there is Iben's ability to throw people around with a flick of his wrist yet he took on ten wolves and very nearly lost because he didn't use his super powers ... admittedly, this is better than usual Stormy Glenn, but that's not saying much.

Original Review...

One of the better shifter books that I have read ... There was the odd plot twist to keep the trope fresh ... slightly let down by the lack of background but over-all, a very nice read ... one of the better Stormy books too.

Second read: I loved this book just as much this second go around. Iben and Zack are very unique characters. The storyline is excellent and very well written.

I can honestly say that this is a definite favorite Stormy Glenn for me. The writing was extra good and the characters and plot line fleshed out almost perfectly. It was definitely a few steps above being just brain candy. Most enjoyable and the MC's were wonderful.

This is my new favorite book by Stormy. Great mix of humor and emotion. Can't wait for the other characters in the book to start demanding their own stories be written.

Update-Just had this book stuck in my head and decided to reread it. Enjoyed it just as much as the first(and second) time I read it.

The concept had potential but it ended up being a bunch of trivial angst crammed together. I didn't have much expectation for it being a shifter book, and yet even then it was disappointing. Heck, even its supposed selling point was a let down.

I didn't mind the misunderstanding between the two, although I did think it tended to be a bit forced. And I understood Zack's differentiation between the alpha and the mate, but the omega suddenly acting like an alpha threw me.

Having said that, I did like how Iben's size led so many to underestimate him, and how when he shifted, his wolf was larger than anyone expected.

Iben is the new alpha of the Aberdeen Pack. The previous alpha was an asshole and abusive. Zack is an Omega. He does not know this, he only knows that his previous alpha won't let him leave the pack. Iben meets Zack and knows about the Omega status immediately. Iben wants Zack. Zack refuses. Iben is upset. But I actually got it. Zack just met the guy. He knows notting about his new alpha and the first thing the new alpha wants is him. Yeah...I could definitely agree with Zack that it didn't seem like he had a great new alpha. He even insults him. Than is turns out the new alpha is not so bad. So Zack wants to apologize for being wrong about the alpha. And Iben can't control his wolf any longer. He rapes Zack. Yes it is rape, because there is no consent. How could there be consent, when they haven't even talked? About anything? You see, Iben has a very strong wolf. And the wolf had not let Iben have sex with anybody in over 200 years. The wolf wants Zack, but Iben just doesn't talk about this. Instead his wolf becomes too strong and Iben rapes Zack (as a human, not as a wolf). Iben is horrified to realize that Zack doesn't want to mate with him and accuses him of rape. So he locks himself up and awaits the decision of the council. Zack understands noting about what has happend. That is because nobody speaks to him about anything. Zack tries to talk to Iben, but Iben still does not explain anything. In the end there is an attack on the pack, Iben goes to get rid of the attackers alone. Knowing he might die. His three best friends are all heartbroken, but finally tell Zack what is going on. Zack realizes he does not want the alpha to die, so he decides to mate with him. That happens. Finally the couple are together. But I did not think there was love. Zack was forced into this mating because of circumstances beyond his control. Although in the end the couple do seem like an even match, it still left me with a sour taste in my mouth.

Oh, and what's with the stupid title? The alpha is shorter than Zack, but not tiny. Pocket-Sized is just degrading and insulting.

Read it before buying and then make up your mind.
The ideas in this book could have been developed a lot better. The characters have sever personality swings which makes them feel fabricated and not real. The story has many paradoxes and contradictions, from the basic character trades to their abilities, etc.
The story is rushed and feels too simple. But there are also amusing moments . I guess it is ok if you want to read something while commuting that doesn't cause you to miss your stop or to keep you from boredom in waiting rooms and long lines. However if you are planing to have some quality time this is certainly not the right book.
As I already got Aberdeen Pack #1-#5 I'll give it a try, though I wouldn't have bothered if I only had the first volume.

...do animals in nature get mates given to them by fate...?

It's interesting that the wolf is so wholly a separate being. That's not really typical in M/M. But then...there are moments when it's typical M/M fare, and then times when it goes back to this. The mate thing especially. There were a couple moments they talked of mates as if they were the "fated mates" thing.

The whole thing with his wolfy choosing the person or whatever sounds oddly like "fate" to me. Unless the alpha's ruled by his own set of fucked up rules, separate from those of mere mortals.

To me, it sounds like there's an element of fate to it all, even if the involved parties are technically given the choice to go through with it or not.

There are a bunch of inconsistencies in this thing, but I'll admit I'm fascinated with the dynamic between Iben and Zack.

Really enjoyable read. The end got a little melodramatic but I expected that. Loved Iben, though he was irksome at the same time. Zack was great, can't really blame him for anything. I wish there had been a little more resolution, at lot happens off page and we're only told about it after the fact, and also I wish Iben/Zack had talked more, they seem to get their relationship together without really addressing anything. But all in all a great book, and a fun series that I keep being shocked that I enjoy so much.

I HAVE A LOT OF OPINIONS. First of all, the characters were DRASTICALLY different from the start to the end, and by this I don't mean like an evolution, but rather they were completely different people, at least to me.
Second, ASSAULT IS ASSAULT. It doesn't matter if you were into it, if the other person don't ask for your consent it is ASSAULT. I don't know who told the authors this was a sexy thing, because it is not, and I very much would want if they stopped writing it because it seems that they associate desire and queerness with it, and it is disgusting. (Yes, I realize this is an old book, I am making this comment in general).
Third, I was thrilled with the premise of a small guy being alpha and dominant and the big guy being an omega and submissive??? But at the end it was everything back to the same stereotype. Like why wouldn't Zack feel protected by Iben just because he's a smaller and feminine guy???? It gives fragil masculinity, heteronormativity and toxic gender roles to me

DNF, chapter 3, did not skim the rest.

Personally I wanted to like this novel, I really did....because it had all the elements that I liked: ABO, an unlikely bottom, a smaller top, and a potential angsty past for one of the MC. I honestly clicked into this novel based on the summary, which I really LOVED....I was honestly soooo excited when reading it. QAQ

However, the characters were so one-dimensional and a lot of the plot seemed too forced and contrived. Perhaps it's because I have higher expectations for third-person POV, but this novel seemed like it needed either an editor or at least a beta-reader.

While I personally do sometimes like me some brainless reads......this novel sits very extreme on the available spectrum......I guess I'm more disappointed than I expected because the background settings for the characters were right up my alley....

I don't read reviews before picking up books because I want to form my own opinion about them, but sometimes it bites me in the back. okay, lately it bites me often.
It was strange beginning with sudden and out of place... flirt (?) from alpha-mc. I hoped there would be more plot before it shifts into innuendos, lap sitting. Was it really number 1 priority for alpha to convince omega to be with him in first 10 minutes after their meeting? why is he even mad when omega doesn't reciprocate?
and writing is a bit half-baked.

I really liked this book. I liked that the alpha was small and not like most of the other shifter books that I have read. I also like that the omega was big. It kind of took most of the norms that you read and flipped them.

I also liked that there were parts that were funny and parts that really made you want to cry. This book is a great start to this series. I am so hoping the rest of the series has a similar feel to it when reading.
