**ARC by Grand Central Publishing via NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion**

I appreciate the free copy, but I just couldn't finish. DNF at 70%.
The people who love these series might love this one too, in which case, don't mind my review :).
The two main characters were okay, but the narrative in which the story was written, confused the hell out of me. Especially when there is supernatural things going on.
Sentences like:

Do I need to stand here and be reminded that she's been with you?

While that "you" is not even in the room! It's just too confusing.
I always thought that 2nd narrative should be used only to write some short notes of love declarations or to write letters, not novels or novellas. When there is dialog, there is a lot of "you" and I don't know if "you" is the first person talking about the second, or a second saying something to the first :-S.
If someone would hold me at gunpoint and ask me what this story was about, I wouldn't be able to tel to save my life.

Beautiful cover though :).

This was an okay read for me. Maybe if I’d have read more of the series I’d have enjoyed it more. Some parts just isn’t click for me. Having said that I liked the storyline and may go back and read the series at a later date.

A few things to begin this brief review of "Take Me Back" by Kelli Maine: First, this is the first work I've ever read by Maine and its in the middle of an ongoing series. That may skew my perspective slightly more compared to someone who is already familiar with the "Give and Take" series. Second, this is a novella and a very brief read which I took my time reading over, and actually didn't mind the writing style. I've written in this style of prose several times before (and it reminds me that I have a brief piece that I have to finish for a review I wrote quite some time ago, oddly enough it's also erotic themed. Coincidence? Pretty much.).

Tangents aside, "Take Me Back" was a brief erotic read that showcased the relationship between Rachel and Merrick, a couple living in a home their restoring an old hotel on Turtle Tear Island. It actually had an interesting backdrop that I wish had more character, place and situational intimacy to it than it did. Rachel discovers a trunk that leads to old secrets that are within the place they're restoring as well as people who once lived in the area. But there's a part of the past that calls out to her (in the form of a ghost) that prompts her to discover the truth of why that ghost can't rest well. It causes tensions between Rachel and Merrick, who doesn't believe in ghosts and thinks Rachel's off on an obssessive journey. In the end though, the mystery comes to some turns, but not in a way that satisfied me.

I thought the writing style could've been used to give this a lot more bite than what it did - there was a great deal of detachment that really didn't use the style to its fullest form. Even the sensual scenes were brief, dashed off, and lacking fire. It felt a bit too repetitive to me on that level, but at least my attention was held by the interactions between characters and learning a bit about them as I went through this story, as well as the involvement of the ghost and what that led to. There were a few questions I had with respect to Merrick and Rachel's relationship that I realized just from reading the plot synopsis of the first book, but there were other points that I picked up within the text fine. It was okay for a brief read, but somehow left me wanting more from it. I don't know if I'll check into this particular series more, but I'm willing to read other works from Maine in the future just to have more of an idea of her style.

Overall score: 2/5

Note: I received this as an ARC from NetGalley, from the publisher Forever.

This book reminded me once again why I love this series. Kelli's writing is so unique and wonderful and, even thought it took me a while to get used to the style and POV, I was completely sucked in to Rachael and Merrick's world once again.

Going in, I really didn't have a clue what this next installment was about. I'd read the blurb, got a little idea but I wasn't prepared for just how interested I would be. I was dreading that it would turn in to some sort of historical/paranormal read but I was so wrong.
Rachael is fixated, obsessed and going crazy over the history of Turtle Tear. After coming across a trunk full of goodies, belonging to a couple who lived on the Island hundreds of years ago, she is determined to do all that she can to bring the 'spirit' back home to Turtle Tear. Even if that means she puts her relationship with Merrick at jeopardy..
"Obsession is what brought me here in the first place. It's not always a bad thing, is it?"

This obsession of Rachael's really puts a huge strain on the relationship of her and Merrick and at times I wanted to shake her to make her realise what she was doing, but Merrick did a good enough job of that. So often in a book it takes forever and a day for the couple to realise the issue and sort it and it's usually done in an awful way. Not here though.. I agree with the way Merrick handled things - he let Rachael realise on her own, with the tiniest amount of help, where she was going wrong.
"We don't communicate, and if we can't talk to each other, then we have no foundation to build a relationship on."

I love this series, I love that we got to be in the company of not only Merrick and Rachael, but MJ and Maddie, Beck and even Joan. I feel like they are one big, dysfunctional family and I enjoy reading about the goings on that happen between them and at Turtle Tear. I can't wait for the next installment!
"I don't give you half of what you deserve for putting up with me. I owe you my life, Rachael. You are my life."

I want more. Merrick, Rachel, Maddie and MJ have grown on me and when the books end I miss them. I swear Maine makes the books short just to leave us hanging.
The book had a touch of paranormal in it and I am happy for the turn of the events on that matter. The strange narration continued. I want to know what the author is trying to achieve by making Rachel tell us the story that way. I don't know about you but that captivates me.
It was short but it had a purpose. The mystery behind the ghost on the island had to find peace. I was worried when Merrick and Rachel faced a problem but in the end the only thing that it was clear is the fact that Merrick and Rachel are meant to be together forever.

Where do I even start with this one... First off let me say that it wasn't what I was expecting at all. But what I got was EVEN BETTER then what I expected!!!!

If you have read Taken, you know the story behind Rachael and Merrick and Turtle Tear Island... If you haven't read it STOP HERE! Go buy it and get caught up. So moving on... Rachael has always had a little bit of an obsession with the Island. When she puts her mind to something she doesn't quit till she has it all figured out. For this book we are back at Turtle Tear and the Anniversary Party they were prepping for in Taken By Storm (again you must read to understand this) is coming quickly. Rachael has a full party coming in a few days but she is totally distracted by the things that involve the island especially the history and the past.

At the end of Taken by Storm Merrick gives MJ the Weston Plantation where Ingrid and Arichbald raised their family. It was said that Ingrid is buried somewhere on Turtle Tear, but that her spirit haunts the plantation that MJ is now to renovate... Well let me tell you the creep factor in this book, brought chills and goosebumps. Even the ice queen Jane who was sent to help MJ manage the renovations is affected by this part of the story. If you can rattle her facade then you can imagine how good it is right! The problem is not everyone is a believer...

I was so excited reading this one I couldn't put it down. Kelli does another AMAZING job weaving together this intricate story of Turtle Tear and the history it holds and the story of the original owners. Everything ties together perfectly but not before there are many bumps in the road and a heartbreaking scene between Merrick and Rachael that left me in tears... You'll see when you read it. The beautiful thing is that even with the tension in this book and the creep factor it moved their story along beautifully. I couldn't have asked for more out of this installment! Kelli has me on edge wondering what is going to come in the next book. I'm excited to see where the story heads next. Rachael, Merrick, Maddie and MJ are some of my absolute favorite book characters, and I feel like they have a lot of story left to tell... The next book cannot come out soon enough!

Take Me Back is a Novella that takes place after Taken, No Take Backs and Taken by Storm. Rachael and Merrick are getting ready to return to Turtle Tear Island. MJ has taken over the renovations at the plantation, but with the news of Ingrid's ghost haunting the plantation causes Rachael to try to sort out how to reunited her with her home. The Island.

Consumed with a need to piece together the puzzle, an obsession is slowly wedging itself between Rachael and Merrick. He doesn't believe in ghosts and she can't stop feeling that the soul of a woman she is so connected to is not at peace. In the middle of planning the first hosted event at the Island the mysteries of the past are colliding and Rachael can't let it go.

We know how Rachael has come to find herself at the island, we know how Merrick took her, we know how they fell in love as they discovered the pull that the island seemed to have for both of them. We met MJ and Maddie and we've learned parts of the secrets that infected their lives. But this novella is not part of that story. This is the story of getting Ingrid home, trying to figure out how to reunite her body and her soul. We get a few more bits of information that makes you start to question what other lies are to be unearthed in the next installment.

I am not sure if I can put my finger on what it is about this series that I have come to love. The story point of view is different and adds something different to the way you read it. I don't always feel like I am in the middle of the story with them, but watching Rachael tell her story years later; recounting every moment that brought her to Merrick - that brought her to Turtle Tear Island...

As much as I am taken with Merrick & Rachael's story - part of me is craving more of Ingrid & Archibald's history. Will they seek out members of their bloodline? Will they end up sharing more of a true connection to these two lovers than just the Island?

A mysterious island, steeped in mystery, a couple fighting to not let obsessions come between them, slightly erotic scenes, personality conflicts, whew! All of this in a novella length read! Take Me Back by Kelli Maine has intrigued me enough to want to read ALL of this series!

Rachel discovers a trunk that leads to old secrets that are hidden on the island’s home they are restoring. Part of the past that calls out to her (in the form of a ghost) and she becomes obsessed with helping this troubled soul. It causes tension between Rachel and Merrick and may cost them their relationship. Can Rachel find the answers both she and the ghost need before she loses Merrick?
Kelli Maine has told her story through the voice of Rachel with great depth and feeling! Her writing style has an almost dreamy quality to it as we see the world through Rachel’s conflicted mind and the message is clear that the title holds as much meaning to Rachel as it does for the ghost.

This was a good little novella!
Although I am usually not a fan of novellas because I always feel like they are too short and I am left feeling as if what I read was not finished. I COMPLETELY understand the reason for them.

Some are to supply the readers with some closure to other books, some are to keep your interest in a series.

I have to say when they are released in-between books it is a VERY smart thing to do. It reminds the reader how much they enjoy a series, to give them a little taste of what is to come. AND well Kelli Maine has done it YET again!

I loved the "past" aspect of this one! I was wondering how it was going to come to play since the history of the island is brought up in Taken by Storm a few times, (as well as in the first book Taken) so I knew it was going to be important and I have to say that I am VERY excited to see how it plays out!

I still have Enzo in the back of my mind and want to know how that is all going to go. BUT this did make me want to know about other things. Happier things. I am looking forward to reading where it goes in the next book!

I will say that Merrick did get me upset just a tad, but then again so did Rachel when she would just take off and not say anything, knowing it would upset him. They have a lot to learn about each other and how to make their relationship work but in the end it always seems to work out. They seem to always understand where one or the other is coming from and try to do their best to work harder next time.
It does make me wonder though...how much more is there for them to really go through? They have been through quite a bit I would say.
Can't wait to see what is yet to come. :)

(ARC received in exchange for honest review.)

This was the first the book in this series that I have read. My review may have been different had I read the first two books in this series. But, I didn't and it really wasn't fulfilling as a stand-alone novella.

It is part romance and party mystery or at least I think that was the intent of the author. So, this is the story of Rachel and Merrick. Rachel works for Merrick as a project manager/party planner/I'm not too sure entirely what her purpose is at a hotel/estate/other building on Turtle Tear. There is also a planation involved. I'm not entirely too sure how these two places are related to each other. And, Rachel may own the island. I'm not too sure - I got a little lost.

Anyway Rachel is determined to bring the spirit of Ingrid from the plantation to the estate/hotel/other building. Along the way she encounters relationship issues with Merrick, who apparently kidnapped her in a previous novel. Uh, okay. That's a shocker - relationship issues with a kidnapper.

Despite the ghosts and dramatic relationships it was all very subdued and anticlimatic.

I had a difficult time envisioning Turtle Tear and the "treehouse". Was this literally a treehouse, like a child's treehouse? But, it had a upstairs and downstairs? It seemed like this treehouse was significant, but I have no idea why.

The novella was written in first person from Rachel's viewpoint. So, that left me being Merrick. I think this may be one of the first books that I've read from this perspective. It was unusual and a little creepy.

Maybe I would have been more drawn in if I had read the first two books in the series. Will I go back and read them? I haven't decided.

I absolutely loved this novella, "Take me Back!!!" I love that Kelli gives us Novellas between her fabulous books. This series is so addictive!!! The love story between Merrick and Rachael is just unbelievable. They go through so many different stages in their relationship, that the reader's emotions are all over the place. I have been dying for their story to continue. This wonderful Novella will hold me over until Kelli's next book is published. Kelli really knows how to create a storyline that hooks us all in. I am definitely hooked. If you have not read her books, I suggest you start at the beginning of this wonderful series with 1) "Taken," 2) "No Take Backs," 3) "Taken by Storm," and this amazing Novella, 4) "Take me Back!!" What a great series!!!

I am going to begin with I have not ready any of the Give & Take series. Such is the life of a reviewer. Sometimes you get the whole picture and sometimes only a quick bite. With that said, I will do my best to rate what I have in front of me. Take Me Back is a short novella at under 100 pages. Looks like the author likes to do novellas between each full book and seeing that this is listed as 2.5 this must be one of those interlude books.

I can’t quite put my finger on why I couldn’t connect with this story. I really don’t think my lack of having read the previous books is it. I think while it had heat, it just felt very lacking and detached. In addition, the voice of the story had my struggling to sort who was actually speaking. I’m not a fan of narratives that I find confusing. Is the whole series like this I wonder. While I do feel there was quite a bit of potential in Take Me Back, the delivery and voice just didn’t ring well with me. Maybe followers of the series will fair better than I did.

Stars: 2

Overview

DESIRE THAT CAN'T BE DENIED

Rachael DeSalvo is haunted by the past. She's come home to her beloved Turtle Tear Island, where she looks forward to happy days and bliss-filled nights in the arms of Merrick Rocha. But when she finds a trunk full of old photo albums and handwritten notes, Rachael soon realizes that the island has not given up all its secrets . . .

For long before Rachael and Merrick made Turtle Tear Resort their home, this historic island was a haven for sensual, forbidden affairs. As Rachael and Merrick work to restore the grand hotel to its former glory, they will be caught in the perfect maelstrom of conflict and desire.

My Thoughts

In the last installment, we see that Merrick has purchased the Plantation that is part of the history of the owners that have Turtle Tear, and there's much more there going on. there's this 'legend' so to speak that the ghost / soul of Ingrid - the owner is still in the home, and wants to be returned to Turtle Tear where she loved it so much and her body is. Rachael has become so involved and obsessed with the story of these lovers, that she does everything that she can to uncover the story and the history and help return Ingrid's soul.

Where this story takes us though is on a portion of Rachael and Merrick's romance, where Rachael's obsession has become so much that it's taken away from her responsibilities on the island and things begin to fall through the cracks. She begins to lie to Merrick about where she's going in the hopes that she can help return Ingrid, and this puts a riff between them. So much so that Merrick sends her home to Cleveland to 'think things through' and decides that they need to be on a break.

I think that what's really interesting about this is that we know that neither of these 2 have a stable history of relationships, and this is something that comes to the forefront in this novella installment. Because they are both really bad at communicating, it puts the future of their relationship in jeopardy and you begin to wonder what it will to keep them together and if it's even possible.

At the same time as this duo is going through their 'stuff', we see Maddie and MJ in an even better place. In the end of book 2, MJ put a promise ring on her finger and it seems like things are going well for this couple. You can't help but be really happy for them.

I guess my question now is whether this is the calm before the storm and if we're going to see things get thrown all about since we know that Enzo is still on the run and he's not going to let things go so easily. I also wonder what's going to happen with the Twin that we just met in the last book, and with Gina - since there's something that's not quite right. I think that what was hinted at - at the liklihood of a 12 yr old fathering a child on his first time having sex being slim to none - i'm curious is there's more to the story there. I don't know about you guys - but part of me wonders if it was Enzo and not Merrick that fathered the twins. just sayin....

So i guess it's now off to reading Given - the 3rd full installment to see where things go. While i'm not sold on the 2nd person that we often get when Rachael is the narrator - at least the story itself is getting better to keep me engaged.

"I have more than I've ever dreamed of...It used to be just me and a hotel in ruins on an abandoned island. I can't stop thinking I'm going to wake up and find all of you gone."
"It's real, Merrick. Believe in us."

Take Me Back is a novella continuing the relationship of Merrick and Rachael following Taken, No Take Backs: A Taken Novella, and Taken By Storm. They are settled at Turtle Tear Resort, but Rachael is still fascinated with the love story and history of Ingrid and Archibald. Their love story was what initially drew her to be interested in Turtle Tear in the first place and her account of their history started the chain reaction that led to their unorthodox way she came to the Island in the first place.

There are strange occurrences happening at the Weston Resort Plantation House that MJ is renovating. Rachael becomes obsessed with finding out the secrets and trying to give peace to a ghost. But in the process she is in her own head, shutting people out, lying and shirking her responsibilities.

"Merrick has never understood why he...well, how we came together like we did, but I know why...Fate. He and I are supposed to carry on the tradition of Turtle Tear. Carry on what comes next."

And Merrick and Rachael still have communication issues to work out. And feelings of doubt and uncertainty begin to creep back in. They still have hot chemistry and need for each other, but out of the bedroom they are struggling to find common ground and compromise.

"I love you...I'm sorry that I 'm not good at this. I've only had one other relationship..."
"There's nobody worse at relationships than me. You know that. You're our only hope."
'We're in so much trouble."

Can you really move on in a relationship if you have to hide what is important to you? And if you cannot communicate effectively, can a relationship survive?

It is obvious how much they love and care about each other, but will love be enough?

"You brought me here, remember? You can't just return me. I'm not returnable, Merrick."

This was a short novella and a quick read. I enjoyed being back at Turtle Tear Resort with Merrick, Rachael, MJ, and Maddie....and even Beck. I really like Merrick and Rachael even when I want to slap sense into them. This one had some relationship drama, romance, sexy scenes, and a little paranormal twist. This is told in first person point of view from Rachael like Taken was so she refers to Merrick as "you." I still find that a little different initially, but I get used to it once I am involved in the story line. I am invested in all of these characters and their stories and look forward to the next book Given.

Thanks to Kelli Maine, Netgalley and Hachette Book Group,/Grand Central Publishing/Forever for allowing me to read this book for an honest review. Quotes are from ARC version and subject to change.

Take Me Back by Kelli Maine is a short novella in Ms. Maine's Give & Take series. Presumably, as I've not read the earlier book in the series, this takes place after the events in the first few books. Unfortunately, it was fairly unreadable.

The author has opted to write in the first person and in present tense, which can make it difficult to understand who anyone is. I did not know the name of the hero and heroine in this book until a couple of chapters in and forget about a description of the characters. Ms. Maine has not made it easy for a new reader to the series to simply pick up the book and enjoy it. Readers don't need a complicated precis on the events of the previous books but a short synopsis would not be amiss. As the book was written from the perspective of the heroine, it would not have stretched the premise for the heroine to reflect back on past events.

This, however, didn't happen and it made it difficult to feel invested in any of the characters or the plot.

Rachael DeSalvo, our heroine, has an obsession. She is obsessed with the resident ghost that appears to have decided to haunt her. She is so determined to figure out how to bring the ghost to peace that she ignores aspects of her job and her relationship with her lover, Merrick Rocha.

The two of them are attempting to revitalize the old hotel on Turtle Tear Island, an island and hotel that has a connection to the ghost and the plantation house owned by Rocha. Presumably, the complicated relationship between the hotel and plantation house was described in earlier books. Rachael, while going through some trunks brought over from the plantation house, finds papers and letters that start her obsession with the ghost.

Despite recognizing that this obsession is negatively impacting her relationship with Merrick and her job, Rachael is unable to stop herself. She blows off her duties and lies to Merrick, something that does not endear him to her. This, of course, brings conflict to their relationship. In the end, it is not Rachael who is able to bring peace to the ghost, but, despite his disbelief in the ghost, Merrick, who manages to figure out how to appease the ghost.

It is a simple enough plot, even if it had me scratching my head trying to figure out the dynamics of the relationship. I couldn't figure out why the couple was together. It didn't help that towards the end of the book, the author (finally) provides a bit of background on the relationship by revealing that Merrick had kidnapped Rachael after she refused to work for him. I am not sure why this was considered an acceptable start to a relationship, but apparently it was.

This novella is billed as erotica, so I presume that the author believed this type of relationship falls into erotic fantasy. Unfortunately, I do not find it so.

Speaking of the erotic nature of the book, lets talk about sex. The scenes are not particularly erotic nor particularly vivid. There are perhaps two or three scenes in the novella, only one of which was particularly memorable and that was more for its silliness than sexual nature.

In the end, Take Me Back is not really worth the time to read.

“I collapse on top of your rising and falling chest and close my eyes. Nothing matters but the feel of your warm skin under my cheek and the sound of you heart pounding in my ear.”

Rachel & Merrick are happy. No matter how they began, they are happy now; except there is someone who needs their help, someone who has passed a long time ago but has yet to move on…

Ingrid is trapped at West Plantation and wants nothing more than to return to her home, Turtle Tear Island. Rachel and Merrick have moved to Turtle Tear and are getting ready for their first large celebration; a vowel renewal and 50th Wedding Anniversary for a wonderful couple along with family and friends. So why can’t Rachel concentrate on the party instead of Ingrid? There is a connection to her that Rachel can’t let go and even if she loses the man she loves, Rachel is determined to get Ingrid back to Turtle Tear.

“You have to drop this irrational obsession. It’s causing problems.”

While Rachel is hell-bent on helping Ingrid’s spirit find rest, Merrick takes more convincing. Because he refuses to listen with an open mind to Rachel, she closes herself off to him pushing them further apart. Being that Merrick isn’t good with relationships, he pushes right back; sending Rachel home to visit her mother. This isn’t met without a fight but Rachel doesn’t want to lose Merrick so she will do what he asks in order to give them both the time they need to sort their feelings out.

After a few days, Merrick and Rachel both know where their hearts are…Turtle Tear Island. Merrick just needed a little push (by none other than Ingrid herself) to see that Rachel isn’t crazy or obsessed and can actually help to bring Ingrid back to her own peaceful resting place. Upon returning home together, words of wisdom are shared and a gift is received.

Remember this:

“The candle enclosed was the unity candle that burned at our wedding ceremony fifty years ago. Our minister told us whenever one of us needed to talk to the other, to light it and leave it burning on the dresser, then the other would know it was time to listen with an open heart and mind…”

Life is all about growth and change. When you have a partner in which to share that journey with, hold on. Remember to always listen as much as you speak. Keep your ears, eyes, and heart open. Life is tough, be the soft place for the other to land when needed. I loved the message of this book. I did not like the point of view and how it seemed like the author was writing a letter to her lover (but with dialog). I did however, get used to it and although different, I don’t think the story suffered much. I will definitely be checking more out by this author…maybe I should go back and start from the beginning!

This is a bit of a ghost story with steamy romance. My rating 3.75.

I decided to try this novella to see if I might like the series. This story, taking place in the development time of a new relationship between Rachael and Merrick, has an almost gothic setting and feel – probably because of the ghost.

Merrick is apparently a bit older and a suave, experienced business man. He had interviewed Rachael to be project manager for the resort that he is renewing at Turtle Tear Island and the Weston Plantation. Rachael declined the job as it would take her away from her mother but Merrick returned and basically kidnapped her. All that was part of book 1, Taken, but the history was filled in enough in this novella to get the feel for the excitement, yet fragility, of their relationship.

Rachael has become obsessed with a ghost, Ingrid, a woman who lived in the time of the Civil War. Supposedly the ghost had made her wishes known – she wants to be returned from the plantation home to the Turtle Tear property. She continues to pour over letters and belongings in old trunks to try to find how to bring the ghost back from one property to the other. Merrick is frustrated with her distraction which is pulling her focus away from the 50th year wedding anniversary celebrations that she is supposed to be handling.

Rachael and Merrick have a very intense sexual chemistry but they are still feeling their way to complete trust and commitment in their relationship. Now Merrick feels ignored and betrayed but Rachael also feels betrayed by his withdrawal and refusal to see how important the ghost issue is to her heart. Will this disagreement break the fragile trust they have built?

The story is written in first person which was a bit awkward reading. There is a big focus on the passionate relationship and I would classify this as borderline erotica which I did not realize when I selected the title. The ghost story was interesting and was a good background for presenting the couple’s relationship problems. They were both stubborn-headed.

The novella is an entertaining, engaging and quick read. Although well written, this was a bit too edgy and therefore not my style. However, others you enjoy a sexy romantic intensity might like to try this series.

I picked this title up from NetGalley (review posted on blog in 2013).

Take Me Back starts off where Taken by Storm left off. It’s been some time since we have been in Merrick and Rachael’s head so I am happy for this novella to see them again.
In restoring the old plantation house, Rachael encounters a trunk filled with many secrets and mysteries of the islands past inhabitants, Archibald and Ingrid Weston. Their love was a love like no other and Rachael is both fascinated and obsessed to learn more about them.
Ingrid’s soul wants to return to Turtle Tear Resort and Rachael will do anything to get her back there. Rachael and Merrick are at odds with Rachael’s obsession but Rachael feels a strong connection to Ingrid.
“Merrick has never understood why he…well, how we came together like we did, but I know why.” I tear my eyes from my reflection and find Maddie’s. “Fate. He and I are supposed to carry on the tradition of Turtle Tear. Carry on what comes next.”
And though I understand Rachael’s need to bring this spirit home where she belongs, I am frustrated with her as she becomes so obsessed that this may break her strong love and connection with Merrick and her family. Everything she is working on has now taken back seat and she is affecting many people around her. It was almost TOO selfish and made my heart break to see cracks in their relationship. I never questioned their love for each other but would have loved to see Rachael talk to Merrick more so that there wouldn’t be so much tension and miscommunication and lying.
Will Rachael lose Merrick forever? Will Ingrid the ghost ever make it back home to Turtle Tear? And what lessons will this couple learn to make their relationship even stronger and better than before?
You will have to read this book to find out!
I love Kelli’s style of writing in this series which is different than what I have been reading. I love this cast of characters and look forward to learning even more about them and where Kelli will take them next. I love seeing MJ and Maddie and can feel their happiness. I am also interested in reading more about Beck and what his story is and what the future holds for him!
This was a quick read and a good addition to the Give & Take series. Look forward to more!

TAKE ME BACK is the second novella in the Give & Take series, the fourth book overall. It begins where TAKEN BY STORM ends, but with Rachael as the main character. It follows the obsession that Rachael has with Ingrid, a deceased woman who once lived on Turtle Tear Island. She becomes bound and determined to discover what Ingrid is trying to "tell" her from the grave and it ends up affecting Rachael's work and personal life in many ways.

TAKE ME BACK was a quick read that fell a bit flat for me. I had a hard time staying interested in the story as there was not much that was new. It just felt like more of the same from the last book, TAKEN BY STORM.

I was happy to be reading about Rachael and Merrick again as I do love their relationship. However, their reactions to each other in TAKE ME BACK seemed a bit over-dramatic. They were quick to fight and then quick to make up, which made their sex scenes seem tacked on and not always right for the moment.

Getting to know more about the history of Ingrid and Turtle Tear Island was what was interesting in this novella. It's a sweet story and I love that it gave Rachael an insight to the island's past, which in turn connected her more to her present.

I most likely will not be continuing on with this series as I am still struggling to find the same intensity that I loved in the first book, TAKEN. I do plan to read more of Kelli Maine's work, though, as I truly enjoy the way she writes. Perhaps her next series (DOLLS & DOMS) will give me more of what I came to love about her writing when I read her first book.

“ I can’t stop thinking I’m going to wake up and find all of you gone.”
“It’s real, Merrick. Believe in us.”
While going through the rooms at the old plantation house, Rachael finds a trunk filled with antiques, notes and old photo albums. On a mission to find out the secrets of the island she becomes a bit obsessed with the story of Ingrid and Archibald. She has always felt a special connection with their story.
The history of the island used to be a haven for forbidden affairs. While restoring the old hotel to its former glory strange things begin to happen.
“Merrick has never understood why he... well, how we came together like we did, but I know why.”
“Fate. He and I are supposed to carry on the tradition of Turtle Tear. Carry on what comes next.”
When Rachael starts to drop the ball on her duties and then starts sneaking around, Merrick has no choice but to send her home to Cleveland to clear her head.
“You’re right, I do get carried away sometimes when I immerse myself in a project I love.”
Caught between her obsession with Ingrid and her desire for Merrick, she needs to make a choice or risk losing it all.
Rachael and Merrick continue to figure things out. Like every relationship, there are ups and downs. Although Rachael is obsessed with finding with putting Ingrid’s ghost to rest, in doing so this also causes some major tension in her and Merricks relationship. Nothing about their relationship is conventional so they pretty much learn as they go and they manage to stay afloat.
I have to say that reading a book in the 2nd person takes a bit to get used to and it can be confusing. I would recommend reading Take first to truly understand Rachael and Merrick’s story. It is so unique and that is makes these stories more intriguing for me.
Kelli Maine did a fantastic job making it realistic and not too farfetched with the paranormal aspect of this story a fun and entertaining read.

Just Something Missing...

Okay, what's missing is my fault. This is a novella between two full length books in the Give & Take series by Kelli Maine. I entered the Goodreads Giveaway for Taken by Storm by Kelli Maine, but was not lucky enough to win an ARC of that book (big bummer!)

Also a member of NetGalley, I found this novella relating to the same series as Taken by Storm and instantly requested an opportunity to read it (in exchange for an honest review). Yay! My request was accepted!

So, what was missing... my having read the series before this novella. The series (or at least that portion of the story that comes before Take Me Back), as I have come to understand by other reviewers would have given me a better introduction to the characters than this novella, as well as their relationship with one another, their histories and their personalities.

This is not the fault of this book, in my mind, but my fault for jumping without knowing better. I believe this is meant to be a stand-alone story, but while I was reading, I kept feeling like I didn't understand the characters well. I kept feeling that information was missing. I didn't feel connected to the characters. That and the erotic scenes were dog-gone short -- straight to the point, then over in a blink of an eye.

If this were truly a stand-alone novel, it'd be giving the book a two-star rating for the above reasons. Instead, I am giving it three-stars because Ms. Maine's story has me still interested in reading Taken by Storm.

If you have enjoyed others parts of this series, give this novella a try. If you haven't enjoyed other books in this series, you should probably pass on this.

Thank you, Ms. Maine, Forever (Grand Central Publishing) and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this digital edition.

If you haven't read Taken, No Take Backs and Taken by Storm then this short novella may not make sense to you... I guess you might be able to read it as a stand alone but it is a continuation of this series. And, if you're following this series you kind of need to read the novellas or you will be a bit behind on the plot. I realized I had missed the novella that came out after Taken... so I was left filling in some blanks when I was reading Taken by Storm. I really think that the novellas should be tacked onto the ends of Book one and Book two... a little annoying to have to pay for a "piece" of a book this short.
So, it's about 100 pages and picks up just where we left off in Taken by Storm. Rachael becomes obsessed with the ghost of Ingrid and helping to solve why she is haunting the plantation. This causes problems with her relationship with Merrick because he feels she is acting irrational. I found that amusing... Merrick wouldn't know anything about acting irrational right??? (giggle) I also found it very amusing that Rachael got mad at Merrick and so she packed a bag and went to sleep in the "tree house"... are we 16 Rachael... LOL. Anyway, that's about all I can say without revealing too much of the plot.
I will say though that I was disappointed that we experienced the same awkward POV writing style as book one. I liked the writing style of book two so much more. And, I wanted more from the ghost story element... it was kind of short and sweet. Kind of a wasted opportunity... I think I am done with this series if there is more to come. I did give it a fair shot but enough is enough!

A Georgia plantation house which contains a ghost? Rachael isn't sure what to believe, but the current owners of Weston Plantation encounter trouble as they try to build a hotel. Apparently Ingrid, wife of a former owner, scrawls unhappy messages in the dust. She died at Weston but was buried at the family's second home at Turtle Tear in Florida, and her spirit remained at Weston. Rachael and her partner Merrick are renovating at Turtle Tear and about to host a wedding party. Rachel uncovers a trunk of old objects and letters, which leads to her becoming just a little obsessed.

TAKE ME BACK is an erotic love story (and we could have done without every bedroom detail of every day) told in present tense. Merrick has unresolved issues in his past, such as whether he fathered a child at the age of twelve, and he is cross with Rachael for not telling him everything. She realises that wanting to find an old recipe for key lime pie is not a wholly convincing excuse for travelling from Florida to Georgia to look through a barn full of junk and kitchen equipment. The female owner of Weston sees a message smeared on a window and panics... odd since nothing sinister is happening. Rachael investigates and thinks that maybe a ghost cannot cross the water to an island to be with her grave. Her relationship is going downhill fast, and she barely notices.

This novella by Kelli Maine could appeal to those interested in family trees and histories. I disliked Rachael's habit of constantly speaking to Merrick in her mind as she tells her story, "I wondered what you would make of it." Combined with the present tense this makes it hard to get into the story and the reader feels someone else is being addressed.

I received this ARC from NetGalley.

Not having read any of the previous books in the series, it's a little hard to pass judgement on this novella. It actually doesn't do too badly as a standalone story--I could tell there was a lot more background that I didn't have, but I was given enough information to get the main gist of it all. I certainly didn't feel like I was floundering. However, I also didn't feel any particularly strong emotional connection to the characters, and with no background to establish otherwise, the main character came across as needy and dangerously obsessed rather than justifiably concerned about the ghost story aspect of the plot.

My biggest issue, however, was with the writing--while I have no problem with a first person POV, the consistent use of "you" to refer to the male lead was just odd. It made it feel like the story was addressed to Merrick, without any overt indication that it was so, such as establishing this as a letter or a diary entry or some other addressed format of writing. From the bonus chapters included, it appears that the original book followed this same conceit, though the sequel about MJ does not appear to. I just found it disconcerting enough to keep me from falling into the story.

I expect existing fans of the series will be satisfied with having this ghost story resolved, but it didn't make me want to run right out and get all the previous books to find out what I'd been missing.

Thank you to NetGalley and Grand Central Publishing for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Expected publication date: June 4, 2013.

Kelli Maine’s Take Me Back (Given & Take #2.5) is a must read for fans of the Taken series. I needed a Merrick fix and this novella spot.
TMB picks up right where Take Me Back left off…with the focus back on Merrick and Rachael (Yes!!!) Life on Turtle Tear Island is still steamy…and turning into a paranormal hot bed. While continuing to restore the islands historic resort, Rachel unearths a trunk that is packed with the belongings of one the former inhabitants. She opens it and in turn opens up a Pandora’s Box. Rachel becomes sickly obsessed with the trunks owner and its contents. Will their beautiful island paradise turn into a ghost town? Will Rachel loose her mind and her man?

I enjoyed this faced paced novella and Kelli Maine’s writing style. I wish there were a few more steamy scenes… but then again this poor couple is dealing with ghost drama and Rachel going cray cray on Merrick. I can't wait for the next book. I recommend reading this series in order (check out Kelli Maine’s blog for the order). I can’t wait to see where this series is going…because I am hooked. Three and half stars.

Review will appear on Goodreads, Amazon andFacebook.com/KindleCrack .

When I got the book I was unaware it was a companion short story to Maine's series. I went ahead and read it anyways, so I can get a feel for the author and what her work was like. From what I read, I found that I like her work very much. If her series is anything like her novella, then this short story has done its job and turned me into her works.

If you haven't read the Give and Take series, you may be a bit loss. However, within this book there is a mini plot that is all its own. The only thing that maybe loss to you are the relationships between the characters. There is mention of background stories, so you get an idea of everyone's stories. With that said, if you don't like spoilers, then you will be better off reading the series first. Fortunately, I'm not one who's ruined by it, so I didn't mind much. In fact, it made my desire to read the series increase. I want to find out how everyone got to where they were.

The writing was great. I enjoyed how Maine used what you think is the main plot of the book, a ghost story, and used it as a vehicle to delve further into Merrick's and Rachel's relationship.

I always look at these novellas/short stories as previews of authors who I've heard about. They serve as a sample of what their works are like. With this novella, it raised my interest in the Give & Take series. As far as I am concerned, this book did its job.
