El joven Lovecraft #1

Rate this book

Borges, Phillip Dick, Clive Barker κ.ά.)

Love this series, although I suspect that the Old Gentleman of Providence would not have approved. The charming naive style drawings and amusing plots in these graphic novels are something unique in the universe of Lovecraftian fiction. I've read the first 3 volumes and hope that the adventures of Howie, his girlfriend Siouxsie and Howie's pet ghoul continue.

Me he divertido mucho leyendo este libro.

I wanted to enjoy Young Lovecraft, but I found it pretty disappointing. The idea of imagining Lovecraft’s childhood with the creepy, fantastical creatures from his later stories is interesting, and the art is decent, but the storytelling didn’t work for me. It felt messy and a bit forced, and the humor didn’t really land. Fans of Lovecraft might get a kick out of it, but for me, it just didn’t click; fun concept, but poorly executed.

Finally I could read the first volume of the adventures of Young Lovecraft! Hallelujah! I bought a hard cover copy of this comic and I read it in two days just because I wanted it to last a bit longer. Normally you will read it on a single sitting. Young Lovecraft 1 has a prologue by José Oliver telling us about his initial idea and how it became a book, then we have a couple of comic strips with the authors introducing us to their creation... and, well, the story itself begins with Lovecraft facing a bully and how he deal with him... Later on we meet a couple of the main characters: Glenn and Siouxie. I love the way José Oliver retell famous stories such as Treasure Island, El Quijote or even Hamlet... but he also deals with poetry and presents poets such as Poe, Rimbaud and Baudelarie. Bartolo Torres has a quite peculiar drawing style that fits just perfectly to the theme of the stories. I could not imagine anyone else drawing for Young Lovecraft. So, if you love Lovecraft, Edgar Allan Poe, literature in general and even dark comedy, you must read this comic!

Although my Spanish is limited, I thoroughly enjoyed this wicked little set of comics. The basic premise--the daily life of HP Lovecraft as a morbid-minded pubescent boy living in some odd amalgam of his own time and the present day--is both clever and amusing. The art is appropriately creepy while maintaining lightheartedness appropriate to the silly plotlines.

Lovecraft--usually called "Howie"--has a hilariously morbid imagination superseded only by the actual (or are they?) supernatural creatures and events occurring around him. I'm particularly fond of Glenn, the ghoul he meets, and the irrepressible Siouxie (who *must* be an homage to "Susie" of Calvin & Hobbes fame).

A great read, even if, like me, you need to plug numerous phrases and sentences into Google Translate or use a dictionary to supplement limited knowledge of Spanish. I look forward to following the ongoing comic on the Web at: http://eljovenlovecraft.blogspot.com/

I did not like Young Lovecraft. I thought the premise was great, but the delivery was poor. I know it's Lovecraft, but it was just too depressing and dark for my taste. If there was a sort of Calvin and Hobbes feel to it, I might've liked it a little better. The art was great and everything, but, like I said, it was the delivery. Lovecraft is dark, but, as a kid, there's gotta something better than calling forth demons and such. Dark, dark, dark. Didn't appreciate it.

José Oliverin ja Bartolo Torresin "Young Lovecraft" (Kettledrummer Books, 2012 - 2nd ed.) on strippimuotoinen huumorisarjakuva H.P. Lovecraftin nuoruuden seikkailuista. Nettijulkaisuna aloittanut sarjakuva on aika köpöinen viritelmä. Kenties parhaiten mieleen jäävät ns. sunnuntaisarjat, joissa päähenkilömme muokkaa vanhoja klassikkoromaaneja uuteen, uljaampaan ja cthulhumpaan suuntaan.

Stellar art and some clever ideas are betrayed by a juvenile male sense of humor and lack of story-telling arcs. Instead of using the characters for a series of short gags, I would have liked to see a narrative emerge, but I suppose that is too much to ask, re: juvenile male humor.

While this is a kinda cute graphic novel, it's not for the kidlets. I did really like the Great Reworkings of the Classics segments.

Enjoyed this! It's funny, sharp and short! And I picked some classics out of it, which I put on my reading list. So overall a good one. And I liked the art very much! Therefore recommend it!
