Here is a unique collection of intimate vignettes and photographs chronicling a year in Lindsey Kugler’s life as a social worker and an online provocateur in Austin, Texas. Her seriate composition shifts between different events: her family, her dog, her roommate, her then-boyfriend, her job assisting the disadvantaged, and her private life as a webcam model. Kugler has a gift for describing assorted periphery; her spotlight effect on non-central details gives each piece a rich dimension. She examines everything in simple specifics and bares thoughts and experiences that are occasionally lurid but always affecting. Taken together, this intensely personal and moving account provides us with a raw and revealing memoir unlike any other.
I was able to read "Here." in one sitting, and not just because of the length. "Here." is written in a way that enthralls and envelops, and learning about the experiences Kugler has her year in Austin is fascinating. The short vignettes make "Here." an easy read that I immediately fell in love with. A must read.
I finished this in one sitting. It's one of the few books I've come across in my lifetime that I've truly devoured. A very unique memoir, HERE. is like no other book out there.
The author is honest, frank, and blunt. The short paragraphs are great for those with short attention spans, her truths are simply stated, and presented in a relatable way.
The story definitely let me see the author as a person above all else. Her words convey a sassy personality, she has friends, boyfriends, and possesses a young adult's vitality outside of her life as a camera model.
Thanks Lindsey for the book through the Firstreads giveaway!
