I’m a writer. Well, technically an author, because they say that you magically become an author (i.e. true creative) if you’ve published something, and you’re a writer if you haven’t (you know those closet aspiring geniuses who just scribble stuff into notebooks and hide it from the world?). But I still call myself a writer. I’m one of 4 brothers. The middle son. I guess that’s supposed to make me uber weird and dysfunctional, but the jury’s still out on that one. I love mint chocolate chip ice cream. Like, really love it. Watching movies and going to rock shows are 2 of my favorite pastimes, and I am addicted to telling stories.

It all started because a 5th grade teacher decided to become a meddler in my life. That’s right, one of my least favorite authority figures at the time assigned us to write these 1 page short stories for class. We had the freedom to create whatever we wanted (within reason), but the assignments were do every day, and upon completing the school year, the plan was that we’d all bind them to compile a book. Well, at the time I hating reading, hated writing, and wanted to be a comic book artist. I figured I’d one day work for Marvel or Disney or something. And I was pretty good at sketching too. But I always found it hard to create my own characters, and I often just settled for copying somebody else’s masterpiece.

Something was missing.

Well, then a 2nd meddler enters the picture. My pops. He starts helping me with the stories. And by helping me, I really just mean I was there more as a consultant and a constant nuisance, ensuring proper grammar was employed. He was the real writer, in my mind. I just wished I could be him. My teacher started grading the stories, and I was floored to see A+ after A+. And she liked my stories enough…ahem, our stories enough, to read them in front of the class. The response was terrific. My classmates actually gave a crap. They wanted to know what happened next. So I turned 1 story into about 12 or so, and made a little book out of it. Looking back, it’s probably terrible. But the point is…I was hooked on the game.

My father and I began discussing book concepts until finally, in 6th grade, I set out to write a “real” book, all by myself. 3 years later, Servant of the Realm was born. It was so under the radar it wasn’t even funny, but I was just stoked to have my book searchable on the internet. It’s a pretty cool feeling when you’re 15. 3 years later, I released The Sacred Sin, a much darker story about a detective on the hunt for a serial killer who can steal souls. (THE FORSAKEN is the revamped version. I literally rewrote every page, and added about 100 more pages to the story. So if you haven’t picked that baby up, you might wanna.) 3 years after that–I know, 3 is the magical number, it seems–ARSON was unleashed. This story is closest to my heart because it came from a very unique place and time in my life. It’s like I grew up while writing it.

Well, sorta…

Flash forward to now. I’ve got 5 novels and several short stories out. I’ve been interviewed on TV, radio, and the internet. I’ve done several blog tours, have my own Youtube channel, twitter page, FB page, so quite frankly, there’s really no reason for you not to stalk me. I’m still that sort of college kid looking for his path while already on a path. I love to write. I love to ask the big questions, to create raw, flawed characters who do incredible things. And I’m reminded every day why I do what I do, why I write, why I tell stories…because of you. Because of something greater than myself. Because if I didn’t, I’d probably go insane.

Welcome to my dysfunctional world.

Spread the fire!

When I got asked to review this book I was so excited. The cover is gorgeous and the story line sounds so fresh and new. But as I was reading the book my feelings started to change much like the heroine Mary’s did. But before I get into that let me tell you about the book.

Mary’s life is going the way she always wanted it to. She is engaged to the love of her life Joshua and she is an artist. But she learns that Joshua has inherited his father’s broken down mansion out in the middle of the country with nothing around them. Her wedding day is getting closer but as the seasons change Mary’s feelings for Joshua turn from love to hate and when she is presented with an out she takes it. But Mary doesn’t realize is that her actions have consequences that even she couldn’t imagine.

As I said at the beginning of my review my feelings changed much like Mary’s did as I was reading this book. Let me start off with what I loved about this book first. The characters are very relatable and Estevan has written them so well that you feel every emotion from love, laughter, fear, and heart break right down into you soul. Estevan paints such a beautiful picture with his words that you can see the country side and broken down mansion as if you are actually looking at them. And for me that is the best thing an author can do is make me feel every emotion and see every scene as if I am standing there right along with their characters. Now for things that I had trouble with as I started off reading this book I was enjoying it and the world Estevan has created but as the book went along I found myself getting completely lost as if things are left out of the story line that I feel were needed to explain what was going on. And towards the end of the book I was so lost I felt as if I was reading another book entirely. I didn’t understand if a character was the devil or a demon and if Joshua was an angel. I was just very confused and so very much heart broken like the heroine Mary as a book I started off enjoying but towards the end just fell flat to me.

Even though this book wasn’t for me I do hope you read Winter Sparrow and come to your own conclusions. I also plan to read another book from Estevan because even though this book wasn’t for me I love his writing and am I am hoping that his other works make me fell the same emotions down into my soul as very few books have done this. 2/5 Bloody Fangs

Mary is a mess a huge freaking mess.. She has what every girl dreams of. Shes a successful painter shes engaged (and rather quickly married ) to a successful architect who loves her, Joshua. Together they move into his families run down mansion. She SHOULD be happy but shes not. Haunted by her past and in my opinion deeply depressed. I swear so many times in the first half of the book I just wanted to slap the girl!

As patient and loving as Joshua is Mary is... well as my mother would say Mary is UGLY! That's right folks in my house beauty is defined by ones personality. Shes sour, rude and unhappy. Of course it would affect her marriage and consume her life.. Of course when someone is in a deep depression they can't help the person they become.. I just want to clarify that I completely understand the severity of depression..

After a huge fight Mary is in an accident and her life completely changes.. Waking up to a stranger and unsure what the french toast is going on.. Only to hear she is married to the stranger and lost 3 years of her life! I’m stopping there already I feel like I’ve said too much!

Winter Sparrow reminded me some what of Before I Go To Sleep.. But at the same time it was original.. I was quickly drawn into the story.. Despite my initial dislike of Mary.. I grew to I dare say like her Lol.. I Love Vega's writing start to finish I Loved it! I didn’t expect the twists and turns he threw at me and I loved him for it.. I cant wait to see what else is in store for us from Vega..

Winter Sparrow is a dark, powerful novella about a newly married young couple, Mary and Joshua, starting out their lives together in an old, run-down mansion given to Joshua by his father. Mary is struggling to believe in the love they share together, but her doubts put more and more distance between the couple as she grows colder and turns inward, deeply depressed. Joshua struggles to hold on to Mary, to bring her back to him emotionally.

When Mary reaches rock bottom, she escapes, is in an accident, is rescued by a dark stranger. She awakens to find she is trapped in a sinister world with a dark-winged malevolent being. Her memories of a life with Joshua seem dreamlike, causing her to wonder if it was ever real.

Mary must get back to Joshua, but how? Does he still love her? What will she find?

This is my first book by Estevan Vega, but it won't be my last! His style is rich and emotionally charged!

I had a love/hate relationship with this book. What I loved about it was how it started off with a relationship in which the main character Mary has many doubts and seems confused about what she wants in life. The story then takes a sort of supernatural, but very interesting turn that intrigued me. This is a short novel, so I feel like there's a lot of unanswered questions that left me confused when I finished reading it, which is why I didn't give it 5 stars. I gave it 4 because there's a decent amount of twists and turns, and the story was sad yet beautiful at the same time. I recommend it if you're looking to get a quick read under your belt.

I read Winter Sparrow from beginning to end. I have to say it started off really good had me interest but once I got into it I felt so lost, I really wasnt sure what was going on anymore. The book felt incomplete to me. I must say however, that Winter Sparrow was well written no grammar or editing errors that were noticeable. Estevan Vega has a lot of potential in this story. I loved the characters, I just wish things were explained a bit more so the reader could understand what is going on.

Um ...what did I just read? Would have been a DNF but it was short, so I pushed through, but ... not sure about this at all. From the start, it just seemed a little off, the writing a little stilted. In another review it said it felt like it had been translated from another language. From the start, it was just bland. Mary was certainly not a likable character. There wasn't much to the story, and what was there was all pretty normal. If I'd been putting it on my shelves I would have stuck it on the "contemporary" and "realistic" ... but it did NOT stay there!

Winter Sparrow by Estevan Vega is an awesome dark fantasy. It is very different from any of the books that I have read. The storyline is very interesting and had my attention from the very beginning and all the way to the end.

Mary is a young woman who is a struggling artist with a passion for painting. In her youth, her family didn’t live anywhere long enough for her to call it home and the love that her father gave her was a father’s love. Mary ran away from that life and didn’t ever look back. She has been able to go on with her life but she still has some painful memories from her past that is haunting her. She has given up on relationships before but Joshua changed that for her. He reminded Mary what it felt like to be alive.

Joshua is a young architect and is the love of her life. He is a wonderful man who loves and cares for Mary very much. They are engaged to be married soon and will be starting a new chapter of their lives. Before their wedding, Joshua takes Mary on a road trip to his father’s mansion in the middle of nowhere. He had inherited the house when his father passed away. Mary knows that it is a very big commitment of buying and owning a home. The idea of it is scary and she isn’t ready for that at all. When they arrive, Joshua gives Mary a tour of the mansion and the grounds. While she is in the front yard, she sees a figure of a man standing across the street looking at her. She has this eerie and uneasy feeling about this man. Who is this strange man lurking around his father’s property? After that day, she is still having a tough time accepting the idea but Joshua was able to convince and change Mary’s mind about moving there.

Mary and Joshua’s journey has begun. They are married, have moved in the old mansion and are very happy together. Joshua has been staying very busy renovating the inside of their house making it beautiful for Mary. The seasons have gone by. Something happens that changes their life and Mary’s feelings toward Joshua is not the same. Her emotions are spiraling uncontrollably. Will Mary be able to get her emotions under control? Will she be able to change things? Will it be too late for her to save their marriage? She needed some time to herself to think so she leaves the mansion and tells Joshua that she will be back later. As she was driving, she sees this mystery man walking on the side of the road before she wrecked.

As I was reading, I could see and feel their love, pain and sadness that they were going through in the book.

Estevan Vega has done a wonderful job writing Winter Sparrow. I am looking forward to reading more of his books.

Review to come as part of the upcoming blog tour!

This is not your typical Fantasy/Romance. This isn't boy meets girl, girl falls in love with boy, boy falls in love with girl, and they lived happily ever after. This is about life and love. It isn't always pretty, it doesn't always make sense, but oh how we all long for it. This book is poetic and beautiful and haunting. Read this line!

"He was the sunrise she missed so strongly, perhaps, and she was the cloud that, in time, might eclipse him."

Or just previous to that when the author describes the scene for you with:

"BY THE END OF SEPTEMBER, dawn resembled dark poetry. A spellbound earth sat behind the hills and clouds and dim but rising light. It was made new by irregular colors. The trees on the south end of the mansion flexed rebelliously out of the black dirt womb and created skinny branches. The shades of leaves faded."

Can you not see every shadow lit gently by the light? Does it not evoke a bit of creepy stillness that comes with early morning fall? I could practically smell this morning at their house in the country.

Mary and Joshua are about to begin their lives together. From completely different upbringings, one being taught that we are "made to love" and the other to doubt self-worth in every aspect, you would imagine that these two overcame hurdles to fall in love. While I was reading, one of my notes said that I pitied Josh. Mary refers to herself as neurotic, but that is such a gentle word for what he is dealing with. As their lives begin, so does their downward spiral.

The imagery and ethereal beauty of Estevan Vega's writing stuck with me. It is visceral and yet soft; strong and clear and yet confusing. The entire book was much like a dream itself, with bits and pieces coming together to evoke a response but without having total clarity of the events that got us there. You have these references to Mary's past experiences, to her father's words, but nothing is concrete. And that is why this novel works so well. If it were concrete, you wouldn't have to fill in the blanks with your own emotions and past. You wouldn't be able to step into Mary's shoes or Joshua's. This was the first book I have read by this author and I will definitely be picking up his others.

Winter Sparrow it’s an amazing book, a dark and powerful novella about a married couple, Mary and Joshua. She is an artist, he is an architect, one perfect match, one may think. Mary isn't sure if this is the life she wants, if this marriage is for her, but Joshua keeps trying to convince her they are made for each other. After they got married, Joshua was given a mansion by his father and he decides it’s the perfect place to start they’re new home. He starts renovating it and put his hear and soul into that house, to make it as perfect as it can be for them, and especially for Mary.
Mary is struggling with everything, her doubts put more and more distance between them as she grows colder and turns inward, deeply depressed. Joshua struggles to hold on to Mary, to bring her back to him emotionally. But they argue and she runs away, trying to escape that life and has a car accident. She is rescued by a dark stranger Lucas, who heals her. She awakens to find she is trapped in a sinister world with a dark-winged malevolent being. Her memories of a life with Joshua seem dreamlike, causing her to wonder if it was ever real. Mary must get back to Joshua, but she isn't sure if he still loves her and wants her back.
The story it’s incredible and the author really managed to describe everything perfect, his writing style it’s rich and keeps you intrigued. This is my first book by Estevan Vega, but it won't be my last!

Once I started this book I could not put it down, i had to know what happen next. Mary gets married to her love name Joshua and they moved to his fathers house which needs work on. Mary loves to paint. Mary gets all these feelings inside of her that she doesn't know what to do. Mary and Joshua gets in a fight and don't talk to each other. Mary can't let go of her past and its still haunting her. Finally her and Joshua talks and she tells him she needs to go for a drive to think. She does and she call's her sister Jamie to talk to her while she is talking to her Mary see's a man in the road and the only thing she can do is turn the wheel the other way, and the car goes into the railing and Mary gets thrown out of the car down into the bank, Mary tries to move but she can't. The guy that was on the road comes down asking her if she is okay and he tells her he will make her feel better and soon she does. Mary wakes up the next day and sees the guy and realize's that he is not Joshua. Mary soon finds out who this guy is, and all she want's is to go back to Joshua and soon she does. But one of them must die in order for the other person to live, Joshua soon finds out about the guy and everything else. I could go on about this Awesome book, but I am not If you have not read it, you need to It is a MUST Read!!!

This book started out normal enough. It appeared on the surface to be a simple love story between Mary and Joshua. Mary and Joshua are living in a home which was left to Joshua. Mary is an interesting character, she is insecure, nervous, and haunted by her past. Joshua meanwhile loves her dearly.

The characters are all well written. You get sucked into the story and want to keep reading to try to figure out where the story is going. I did have to re-read a few paragraphs here and there to confirm what I had read, because I thought at first I had read it wrong, but that is a minor issue since the twists and turns this book take are right out of this world.

I have to say the book is well written and has a VERY unexpected storyline. I can honestly say I would recommend this book to anyone who likes books with a huge twist. I'm sorry, but I can't give it more than 3.75 stars. I think the ending really felt rushed, and the book itself was a little confusing at times. But all in all it was an interesting read and it did keep me turning the page.

I received this book free from the author in exchange for an honest review. This book was a quick and easy read, until the end. I got very confused as to what the hell was going on. The ending felt rushed and not well explained. But on the bright side, most of the book leading up to the end was beautifully written and you could feel the characters emotions, they were lain out perfectly. This book is classified as romance, I was say not only is it a romance, but a dark romance with a hint of paranormal. I would even go as far as to say it could even fit into the horror category a tiny bit. I did enjoy the story I just felt it was a little strange.
Mary was a touch character to crack. I don't know if she is crazy, depressed or just an artist or all of the above lol. She is just strange all around. I felt the same about Joshua. What's his secret, he obviously has one. But I liked how hopeful his is with everything. Lucas swoops out of the blue, I instantly disliked him, and for good reason. I would really like to know what he is. At first I thought he was an angel but now I know better.
This is a series that I am undecided if I will continue. I may skim book two in order to get the answers that I want. I would recommend this to readers who like eerie romance novels.

Winter Sparrow is a dark paranormal romance that left me confused but I liked it. Mary & Joshua are starting out their lives as husband & wife. Before the wedding Mary is already questioning whether she's happy or not & the mansion Joshua's father gave to them, isn't helping at all to ease her fear. That is until she sees the garden. It's like a work of art & with Mary being an artist, she can appreciate it's beauty. After a while of being married & growing even more depressed by the day, Joshua tries talking to her about the changes. They argue, she runs off, & that's where the story gets interesting & confusing. (At least for me.) What is Lucas? Is he a bat? Is he a demon? And furthermore, what exactly is Joshua? Did he come from a line of witches? So many questions were left unanswered for me. I really enjoyed this story, though. Very heartbreaking there at the end. The story was original & I read it in one sitting. I'm definitely re reading this just to make sure I didn't miss anything.

In the spirit of full disclosure I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

The Bad:

Descriptions are heavy handed, to where I found myself wanting to skim. I get that Mary has some deep issues, but I think they are focused on too much. She’s supposed to be getting married, right? Where’s the happiness? The metaphors confused me, drawing me out of the story each time. Several parts were so confusing they pulled me out of the story. The entire last half of the story had me in a storm of confusion. The ending makes no sense.

The Good:

Joshua really cares for Mary. He’s everything a husband {or fiancee} should be. Strong, patient, understanding, encouraging. I enjoyed the playful verbal banter between Joshua and Mary. I liked that Mary was an artist and Joshua wasn’t against doing the repairs himself, though I think it would have been more meaningful if they’d worked on them together like a couple. I liked the scene where Mary sings. The struggles were realistic and heartwarming.

Everyone kept telling me how good this book was and I was anxious to find out for myself. I was not disappointed. Mary and Joshua are in love and engaged to be married. Right away we are thrown into the story with Mary having doubts about everything. She goes through the motions, marrying Joshua and moving into the house he has inherited.
Without giving spoilers, this story is a true page turner even though it is a bit on the depressing side at time. The author did a wonderful job creating his characters and the trials and tribulations the couple must face as newlyweds. Then something terrible happens, a surprising twist to the story that keeps you glued to the story line to find out what will happen.
I usually don't rate on half scale marks, but have to give this story a 4.5 out of five stars.

I've read quite a few of Vegas books and this one is at the top. I loved it. I'm not really the kind of guy who sits down and reads a book from start to finish. I usually read it in chunks when I have time. I don't usually think about the story while I'm not reading. This one was different, though. My eyes were glued, reading past when I needed to put it down and go to bed. And when I wasn't reading, I couldn't help but think about it. Read it in 2 sittings. Throughout the whole book I kept finding myself thinking, "Wow, I didn't see it going that way". Very fun read.

My Thoughts
This book was really good, I enjoyed the whole way through. It kept me at suspense to what would happen next. I enjoyed the way he wrote the chapters, the way he described the hurt they felt. It was so beautiful, but so dark. There was times I wanted to cry, but that is a fantastic writing. As I would read this I would zone, and it made me feel like I was apart of this. I can't wait to see what else he has stored in his other books.

Mary has always dreamed of having wings. After marrying Joshua she sinks into a depression and gets her wish. Buy it comes at a high cost. Lucas finds her broken and battered and grants her wish. But will her love for Joshua free her? This is a unique story, but I wish Lucas was explained a bit better. You are left going "what in the world". Overall it was a great read.

I'm afraid I did not enjoy this book. Most of the time I was totally confused and I didn't understand what the author was trying to convey. The whole story felt disjointed and having got to the end the only thing that came across was the power of love.

It's not that this is a bad book; it's just really, really not my thing. It's very over the top arty in its language choices, and the ingenue is, kind of literally, a manic pixie dream girl.
