Overview: Reckoning caught me off-guard. It’s labelled as a paranormal story, so I wasn’t prepared for how creepy certain scenes were. Along with the intense descriptions, I was completely blown away by this debut novel. I love horror and I love paranormal, so when the two mix together as seamlessly as they did in this novel…I’m in bliss. The author portrays what scares Kat so clearly that it gave ME goosebumps. I also liked how the narrative in the novel wasn’t “dumbed down” simply because it was told from a teenage point of view. The music preferences of the characters do make the novel feel dated (late 90s), although when I went to high school those were exactly the bands I listened to, so I didn’t mind.

Plot/Characters: Kat has visions of dead people and these visions are getting harder and harder to hide. Her mother tries to hook Kat up with the cute new neighbor, but he gives Kat the creeps. No, Kat rather fantasize about hooking up with Rick, who she’s too terrified to talk to despite her huge crush. I really enjoyed Kat. Although she sees visions, she really does act and worry like the average teenager. She’s concerned about buying a car, finding a boyfriend, and spending time with her best friend, Rachel. Rachel is a pretty kick-ass best friend. She’s spunky and bubbly but not annoyingly so. Lovell is definitely a creepy neighbor, but I he has a very seductive side to him. He’s like a younger and sexier version of Hannibal Lector- only he doesn’t eat people. At least, I don’t think he does. For those who don’t see the sex-appeal of Hannibal, this comparison between the two guys might be lost.

Ending: I like the intensity of the ending. What I didn’t like was how more questions were raised just as fast as my original questions were being answered. I’m disappointed that book two isn’t released yet. I have a suspicion about Rachel that I REALLY want to know if it is true or not. Now, I have to go hunt someone else down that has read the book to figure out if anyone else picked up on these “hints” and to compare theories on book two. Because, you know…I will definitely be reading book two.

(I liked the book so much that I purchased a copy for my mom immediately after finishing my review copy. She’s a school teacher and this will be perfect for her paranormal loving school kids. I received my review copy as part of the blog tour in exchange for my honest review.)

Reckoning is an enchanting, easy to read book with a touch of the paranormal. I really liked Halls writing and the pacing of the book. I didn't like that it ended on a cliffhanger.. which I will definitely be reading the second book. I was intrigued with the paranormal aspect of this book, Kat is not your run of the mill ghost seer, she's special.. important. Why? That's something we'll find out.

Cover and writing style
I love the cover it draws you in. (I like dark, creepy covers!) I especially like that the girl on the cover is a good visual for the character. The writing style is great, a little over descriptive, but she uses current vocabulary and the story is told from Kat's POV.

Main Character
I can relate to Kat, she has struggled with normalcy since she was born (you know.. seeing ghosts and all). Because of that, she's kind of a loaner and a tad bit awkward. She also loves antiques and watched Antiques Roadshow, which is a plus in my book!

Swoonworthy points: 7
Reckoning has the making of a love triangle, though it's not quite there. Kat had been swooning over Rick all school year, and he finally asked her out the last day of school. A new neighbor moves in, Lovell who always manages to be at the right place, at the right time. She finds him creeptastic, but intrigued as well. Both men are equally attractive!

I recommend this book if you're in the mood for a bit of adventure, romance, and mystery.

The story began mysterious as ever. I totally pictured the evil, dark, mysterious guy and Melinda from Ghost Whisperer. (I had a sudden nostalgia).

The first chapter started out creeping me out (in a good way). The writing was vivid, so much so that my sympathetic nervous system was firing like crazy. I was imagining Slender.

Characters:

Kat - Boring <---I really can't say much about her. She is just so typical that I can lose her in the sea of YA main girl characters.

Rachel - overly happy, fangirling type of girl. Like this:

Rick - Again, very typical YA male character. You know that gorgeous guy at school who has actually liked the main girl? You found him? Yup, that one.

Lovell - Mysterious boy who comes to town and intertwine his life into the main girl's? Heard that one before, next.

Plot + Rant:

What I don't like and don't get is that why does most YA urban fantasy writers write in a beautiful, bubbly character in their novel as the main character's best friend. It is so repetitive and boring! I find Kat and Rachel a bit like Nora and her best friend from what is that book? Oh, Hush, Hush. What else I don't get is that why is there always girl drama in most high school oriented books. I mean I guess without the drama it gets boring? But I just find that the stereotype of the gorgeous girl being a bitch is so overrated. Guess what I am trying to say is that I didn't enjoy the high school scenes in the book, in all books. It is so boring. Authors, personally I think if you can avoid the whole high school part, please do. I mean it serious takes more than 100 pages to get the story started and for things to get interesting. I mean I don't want to sound snobby and all but I really don't have the time for a book to take 100+ to introduce stuff.

After the initial 100+ intro, the story was pretty good. Molly can really right intense scenes but those scenes don't come around enough for me. Which some what frustrates me since I know what Molly is capable of writing more epic things but she doesn't bring all the potential out. It is like teaching that one math student who thinks he sucks at math, therefore he doesn't even attempt to open his books *takes a deep breath* but he is probably smarter than you and no matter what you tell him he thinks you are lying. <---Personal experience.

I really think what can improve this book and series is that write more scary, awesome undead scenes.

Anyway I have to give this book a 2/5.

Random things I loved:
Kat's cat is called Alecto.
The cover is actually really pretty.
Random bits and pieces:
"With her short denim skirt, black leggings and black Uggs, multiple bracelets and choker necklaces, I can’t decide if she’s a remarkable trendsetter or a fashion question mark." (Okay, I say that is a fashion no-no).

"The glass doors to the cafeteria open, the sun’s reflection in the glass momentarily blinding me." (And this hot guy walks in...well, I totally thought of Twilight).

My Reckoning Review

I really liked this book, It got a bit spooky at times for me, but I was able to handle it. I am a chicken, lol. I really liked the main character Kat, she is a great person. In the small things that she does. How she talked about spending time with her older neighbor who is all alone, and just overall had respect for those older than her. She has a good heart.

I was not sure what to think of the new neighbor Lovell, he seems creepy, but has some appeal to him as well. I believe there is more than we know there.
I liked the whole "seeing dead people" aspect to this, it's pretty interesting and creepy too.
Kats best friend Rachell is a great spunky girl, I really liked her, and she is a great best friend. I also think the relationship between Kat and her mom was great. I enjoyed the ease they talked.

The paranormal world the author creates here is unique and to me sets it apart from many other YA books out there. It had excitement and spook right from the beginning. I was hooked.

I don't want to give too much away, but want to say, its written very well, and I think it's a great start to a new series. I certainly will be reading book 2 as many more questions came up just as fast as some were answered, sortof frustrated me. Lol

The start was a great one, and great climax at the end, but of course it does set us up for the next book, with all sorts of new questions that come up.

I highly recommend it. Great for Teens, and adults alike.

5 out of 5 stars for me.

I received a copy of this book from the author for my honest review.

This review has been crossposted from my blog at The Cosy Dragon . Please head there for more in-depth reviews by me, which appear on a timely schedule.

There was action and romance right from the word go in this novel. I loved it. The climax at the end was really great too. Yay! The only point against it, which wasn't really a bad point, was that I didn't realise it was part of a series, and I was wanting some sort of conclusion that wasn't coming!

Kat was endearing to me as a character, I enjoyed hearing about things from her perspective. Sometimes she didn't seem all too bright, and I didn't follow what she was thinking, but the rest of the time it was fine. And surely some of that was from when she was in shock.

The romance sort of thing was really good. Kat wasn't really sure who she was being attracted to the most, and why, and then the betrayal she feels is just great. Well, not great for her, but great for my reading experience.

I loved the cover. I'm pretty sure Kat never wore a dress like that, but she'd be going for one if she did. She does look pretty amazing, if a little old (presuming that is her on the front cover).

I finished this novel and was filled with great things to say about it, and then I promptly didn't get time to write them all down for a couple of days, so this review is a bit skimpy by my usual standards. It was super enjoyable though, and I would recommend it for sure.

I'd recommend this novel to teenagers who are just moving into the paranormal and fantasy genres, as well as those who already enjoy it. Yay! Five stars from me, and I can't wait to get my hands on the other books in the series.

'Reckoning' is a really interesting first book in a young adult paranormal/fantasy series. The book focuses on Kat Matheson, whose life has been plagued with the strange ability to see the dead for as long as she can remember. Only now, the visions are becoming more vivid, the voices more persistent, and the nightmares more real. On top of her increasing problems and fear for her soul, she must deal with the arrival of her mysterious and gorgeous new neighbor, which only serves to complicate her life further. Kat must figure out what her visions mean and what powers she actually wields before it's too late and the curse that controls her fate wins.

I found the description and concept of this book to be very interesting and unique. The story had a great mix of mystery, action, romance, and adventure. The writing was well done and flowed effortless with the plot being fast paced. The characters were intriguing and really likable - I could easily identify with Kat and her struggles and I liked the character of her best friend, Rachel too. I liked the unique history and story behind Kat's gift and her curse, as well as the paranormal world that the author creates. I think it added an unique aspect to the book and sets it apart from other YA paranormal books. This will be a fantastic series for fans of paranormal fiction and I'm excited to see how the story progresses in the next book.

Disclosure: I received a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Review to come soon...

What do you do when everything you think you know, it the furthest thing from what really is. Reckoning takes us through a journey to find the truth.

Kat Matheson is a young, slightly naive, beautiful girl, who thinks she is not beautiful and believes that she is invisible. But Kat is certainly not just a typical young girl, she can hear and see the dead and has kept it a secret since she was a little girl. Kat has a very likable personality even when her world is turned inside out. When the boy she has had a crush on pays her attention she is completely thrilled. Enter the mysterious neighbor, Lovell.. There is a lot more to Lovell than Kat knows. There is no love triangle and the romance that does take place was sweet and at time heartbreaking.

The world building was a little slow, bit was just enough for you to keep wanting to read and find out just what was really going on. I found Kat's psychic ability to be fascinating and her connections with Lovell was something I would like to know more about.

With a few twist and turns, first loves, and betrayal, Reckoning makes for an enjoyable read. I would definitely say give this one a try.

Kat Matheson should be living a normal teenage life, instead she sees ghosts and the apparitions are getting more intense as she gets closer to her birthday. If that wasn't weird enough, her new neighbor sends out warning signs and she is riddled with questions about who he really is. As her life is put in danger, she is surrounded with questions about who she really is and who can really give her the answers she needs.

Electrifying story, Kat is wanting to be a normal teen and tries so hard to hide her unusual side. The story is rich in detail and by the end you are eager to pick up the next book in the series. I loved Lovell, her new neighbor he is intense and there is a raw quality to him that makes the eager to read more about this interesting character. Excellent read for paranormal fans.

Molly pens "Reckoning", a paranormal thriller in a well written, smoothly flowing plot and characters that are believable. I read the book in one sitting and loved how it brought brings back memories from my past. The ending was intense with a bit of a cliffhanger to the point wish the second book was released. Highly recommended for all paranormal, supernatural thriller fans.

First, let's start with the cover. I like dark, creepy covers featuring a woman with a gown to die for. If readers judge a book by its cover (and some really do), then they can immediately know that this book has a paranormal story.

The storyline is simple and nothing much new. The heroine, Kat, can see and hear dead people. This may bore me, but good thing the author added something more to her destiny which not only make the book bearable, but also interesting.

The characters are typical – those you find in high school and perhaps can relate with. Kat is described as someone who struggled to be normal since she was a kid. Seeing and hearing ghosts are not something one can feel confident having with so she mostly keep to herself. She has a crush on Rick, her high school mate who happened to be more than that. Then later, an extremely gorgeous yet mysterious man, Lovell, moved in to the house next to where she's living with her parents. Things became more suspicious when she felt that Lovell knows more about her and her secrets.

The narration is also okay. It is Kat's POV and I like reading her thoughts throughout the story. Sometimes, I feel for her while in other times I just can't understand her. She doesn't seem perfect, and I like it. Other authors build their heroes and heroines like saints that I feel disgusted reading their stories.

As for the writing, I admit I felt sleepy in the beginning. The pace is slow, but fortunately in caught up somewhere in the middle of the book. Still, some parts are dry that I caught myself skipping some lines just to catch something important. There's also romance included in the story, but I am a bit disappointed that it wasn't built that strong. However, I like the love triangle and I find myself sympathizing Kat after the betrayal she felt when she learned about the truth and her destiny.

This book is recommendable for paranormal, young adult, and romance readers. Just a bit of a warning though – don't expect much in the end! I hate cliffhangers and I hate it more when the second book is not yet available. It keeps me wondering what will happen next and then later on, I will find myself constructing my own book 2. Hehe. So Molly, if ever you're reading this, please finish the second book so fans of Reckoning will be able to follow Kat's story.

Reckoning

I was originally drawn to Reckoning because of its gorgeous cover. Yes, I do choose my books by their cover, but don’t judge me for it. I just like looking at pretty things, who doesn’t? The summary of the book cemented my desire to read it and I’m glad it did. Reckoning is about sixteen, soon to be seventeen year old Katriona Matheson, a young woman who has been able to see dead people her entire life.

Her gift is not without danger though and now that she can no longer ignore it, something dark is coming for her. While I really enjoyed this book and the characters in it, the pacing is rather slow. Don’t get me wrong, I like seeing inside Kat’s head and major points for putting in so many awesome bands, Kat’s taste in music is the best.

But a large portion of the book focuses on the relationship between Kat, her family, and her best friend Rachel. While I’m not complaining about these things, because I really enjoy her friendship with Rachel and how they’re always there for each other no matter what, but I do think there could have been more action.

You learn a lot about Kat in the first part of this book, but not much about what her gifts are. It picks up in the last few chapters though and if you came make it through the book until then you won’t be sorry you read it. The last five or so chapters of Reckoning are full of information and the betrayal, pain, regret, and determination that is thrown at you will literally have your head spinning, but in a good way.

I have to say that while I like Rick, Kat’s high school crush for like ever, I am totally Team Lovell. The way Hall describes him I swear he’s like walking sex I just want to reach in the book and touch him. I knew there was something about him, but I totally didn’t expect what it actually was. She pulled more than one twist out of left field at the end and now I’m anticipating the second book in the series.

I would definitely recommend this book and I urge any readers to stick with it even though the beginning is slow, the payoff is in the end and boy what an end it is!

For years, Katriona Matheson has had a secret to keep. She can see and hear ghosts. This fact has gotten her into trouble on more than occasion, but she's done her best to pretend that there's nothing wrong with her. She's ignored the supernatural world that surrounds her in hopes of living a simple life. She wants nothing to do with the ghosts, and keeps hoping they'll leave her alone, once and for all.

When her dreams take a darker turn, Katriona starts to question the world around her. At times, she wonders if there's something she's not seeing. Her visions have increased, and she keeps seeing something she knows she shouldn't be there. Deep inside, she knows something isn't right, but she's not quite sure as to what's wrong.

The arrival of a new neighbor further unhinges her reality. At times, he seems to be so familiar to her, yet she knows she's never seem him before. Lovell, on the other hand, has been doing everything in his power to befriend her. Something, she soon realizes, begins to freak her out.

Immersing herself in her studies, and her new found relationship, Katriona tells herself that things might not be what they seem. Perhaps she's just losing her mind. Unfortunately, she knows that's not true. The darkness surrounding her is growing ever closer, tormenting her at every turn. If she's to defeat it, she'll need to embrace the powers she's suppressed for so long. Unfortunately, she has no idea on where to begin.

This was such a great journey. It was lovely to see Katriona grow in so many ways. From a small child seeing spirits to a young woman determined to save her friend, I think she came a long way from beginning to end. The story sucks you in and doesn't let go. Not even after you stop reading. Definitely looking forward to what comes next for this delightful series.

” I see dead people”….. Says this girl! ooooh, did any of you like the movie “6th Sense” as much as I did? Well, what if it was a girl who could see dead people? I would also like to say that though it’s labeled YA paranormal… it’s got a slightly creepier feeling to it, so maybe add some noir, or dark, to it LOL just in case you wanted to know that part!

I think the most thing I like about Kat as a character is that she felt real. She has flaws and she makes mistakes, and is sometimes naive but she’s a teenager! I love that about her. Her insecurities are what every teenage girl goes through. I like that she has a will for herself, and not so easily pushed into peer pressure. I also like that she has a smart mouth that is useful LOL I overall liked Kat, and I especially loved her best friend Rachel, but you all know I love those supporting character roles, and this one is excellent!!

There are two guys, but there isn’t really a love triangle, and while I do have some commentary about both guys, I think I will maybe keep them to myself because I don’t want to ruin anything for anyone. I know I just said there wasn’t a love triangle, but I know some people won’t read a book with a love triangle in it! I will talk about the awesome suspense, and the totally excellent ending, cliff hanger and all! Yep, we’ve gotten one with a big ole goodie! hahaha But this is a series and how else are author’s going to keep you getting their books! HA! Well done!

I will definitely be getting book 2! I am intrigued enough to guarantee it! Plus, I thought that it was an easy read because it was pretty fast paced for me! I thought the romance part was sweet as well, which is a plus for me! So… 4.5 CREEPTASTIC HAUNTING PAWS from me!

This book wasn't really what I expected it to be. I had thought that it was just going to be another book about some shy yet secretly strong girl who discovers that there's more to her past then what she believes. Of course, this has to be facilitated by the arrival of an undeniably attractive male. Said girl knows that, for her own safety, she should have absolutely nothing to do with him yet weakly succumbs to his masculine charms.

Yeah, not this time.

The thing that I admired the most about Kat was how practical she was. From a young age, she learned that telling people about her "gift" wasn't going to get her anywhere but a psych ward, so she never talked about it. And when the "gorgeous and mysterious" Lovell moves in next to her, she does not immediately fall in love with him. In fact, she doesn't really like him much at all. You know why? Because Kat is smart.

My main problem with Reckoning was that it took a pretty long time for the story to actually get started. Now, don't get me wrong, once things did start moving along, it was hard for me to put the book down, I just wish that it hadn't taken so long. There were a few dry parts that I had to sift through to find the gems buried in there, but, overall, it was worth it and I really enjoyed reading about Kat and her destiny. Now if only I knew what that was.... Curse you, cliffhangers!

Background: Kat can see things that others cannot, but she has spooked her parents so she pretends not to see them anymore. One night a mysterious boy moves in next door without any parents, and to top things off, these spirits that she sees are getting stronger for some reason.

Review: I was very surprised by this book, I was expecting a paranormal YA read, which the quirkiness of some teenage romance and drama. What I was not expecting was the chills it sent down my spine. There were a few occasions reading at night that I could not get images our of my head, spooky spirits, dreams Kat experiences, sexy neighbor and his creepy house. It was a nice difference to normal YA paranormal reads though. It gave the book an edge.

I really liked the spooky, creepy elements and they brought more to the character development, even though I did feel like Kat is kind of dumb sometimes, but as teens we are were/ are...

I think what I enjoyed was the questioning through the plot, not the kind were the author just completely leaves you hanging at the end, but the kind that is built up through the plot without the reader realizing, some are answered and built up, others were waiting to be addressed fully later.

I think that Molly Hall wrote a spectacular YA. There are elements for everyone, suspense, action, some good looking guys, some romance, and some of that star-crossed lovers/ companions feel.

Very much enjoyed.

There are many things that makes a book a great read: amazing male characters, strong women, action, love, drama, and every once and a while, a book that really introduces you to its characters and the action starts just a few chapters before it ends. That was the Reckoning for me. Normally, I enjoy a book that starts off with drama or action from the beginning. I live for those kinds of books. But Hall takes a different approach and really lets the readers get invested into the characters. I got to know them before anything happened so when small drama pockets where presented, I knew how they were going to act. It was brilliant because it made me feel like I was a part of the story. Kat’s neighborhood, I can see it in my head. Her house, her school, or Lovell’s house, the layout is in my brain.

During the book, you have no idea why this is all happening to Kat or if these people in her life are apart of all of this. Kat has a completely normal life, besides seeing ghosts. But when you hit that chapter and find out everything, it all completely makes sense.

Hall takes the time and sets you up because about five chapters before the book ends, the action starts and when you get to the last page, you will wish you had the second book ready.

I received a copy of this book for an honest review as part of a blog tour.

MY OVERVIEW: Ok, I have to go “fan-girl” here for a minute… Within Temptation is an awesome band and I was thrilled and surprised to find them mentioned in this book. Not many people know of them. Ok, I am done now, onto the book… I thoroughly enjoyed the story. I think that everything Kat went through to try and extinguish her powers was interesting. It would seem like a very very hard secret to keep and she did it very well.

PROS: I really liked Rachel. There is something different about her though, and I hope we find out exactly what in the next book. Rick is also great. I am so on team Rick. (Nope, don’t like Lovell at all.)

CONS: Not the most original story out there. There were a few times while reading it, that I was thinking “Haven’t I read this somewhere before?” Also, apparently Kat comes from a line of women with powers, yet it is never fully explained why her mother and grandmother don’t seem to have any.

MY FINAL THOUGHTS: There are a lot of questions left unanswered and I look forward to finding out the answers in the next book.

I am baffled.

RECKONING

From so many Young Adult Fantasy / Paranormal books it becomes to be pretty hard to find something good and original. I do not refer just to the story itself, to the events that occur, but also to the feelings and reactions that the author induces. Well, I liked very much both Reckoning and Relentless. The proof is that despite shortages of time, I not resisted not to read the second volume. It was enough for the tour to read only one book, but at the end of the first volume I was restless to see what happens next. But first things first.

You will find in the Reckoning the school and its problems, and parental relationships and self discovery. But what do you want and how could they miss? It’s YA! and you assumed their presence from the moment you decided to read the book. What is important is that the author manages to convey the heroine’s feelings. I felt and understood them, and my curiosity was well stirred. Each element that appears, every detail that was introduced can change everything, nothing seems randomly. There are enough of these little details not yet used that can reverse the situation entirely and I am convinced that the author will use them in one way or another.

Since the volumes are connected (and this is obviously early enough from the first volume) the action does not seem train, boring, on the contrary. The author sets the stage for supernatural and she does it very well. The mundane problems blend wonderfully with the fantastic ones, they complement and motivate each other. There are plenty of interesting and enjoyable scenes.

Characters: you'll love them whatever role they will play and whatever changes may still occur. And once again the author will play with you and will leave sufficient open ways so that even a betrayal can come from where you least expect.

There is a love triangle! No matter what you think in general about this kind of dilemma I think you'll like this one. Why? Because so far you cannot not like both guys involved and Kat's motivations are understandable. I chose my favorite, but for the first time I have some emotions that he will not be “chosen one”. Again, details are very important and well used. New attractions and old love will face the picture (blurred yet) of "destiny VS free will." The author drew me into the game, I made plans and I was bothered when a certain relationship was going too well.

RELENTLESS

Volume two picks up the baton and continues the race successfully. If in the first volume we deal with the discovery of the “secret” and accepting fate, now the Kat's training for the supernatural, and the fights begin. Challenges, testing, rescues and travel through space and time will be take place in a sustained pace. The moments of rest are animated by visions and love triangle story which is now secondary. However, it is present and offers pleasant and exciting moments to the reader: dialogues and confrontations between rivals, and special interludes between lovers (improperly may use the term).

The villain character is more present and you start to ask yourself some questions about him. It is a cat-and-mouse game in which that poor little mouse can cause surprises. New details are brought in addition to those of the previous volume, and again, anything can happen. Betrayal, ways to survive, sacrifices, manipulation, assumed risks from love or devotion, you’ll find everything you would like and it is important that all these elements are properly used and at the right moment.

The ending takes you somehow by surprise, it leaves you on the edge and eager for the next volume.

I warmly recommended to you.

“He wishes he could forget about her. Ignore her existence. But he can’t. Because his future is irrevocably tied to hers.
Maybe he should just kill her now.”

“The photograph is obviously old, the edges cracked and torn. […] I look closer. Even though the photo is faded, the eyes still hold that intense, penetrating gaze. The gaze I’d seen in real life, just moments ago. My hand shakes and I feel slightly sick.”

“He smiled, remembering the look on Katriona’s face. Anger. Grief. Shock, mixed with horror and disbelief. Perfect.”

“There is one who will be with you, and one who will go. Do not lose faith.”

Reckoning by Molly M Hall is a paranormal romance for young adults about a girl named Kat who can see ghosts. She has kept her ability secret, but lately the apparitions she sees are getting out of control. Hiding the truth from the new guy who moved in next door and her new boyfriend she has drooled over all year is getting harder with lights exploding around her and invisible people pushing her down stairs. Kat tries to maintain control of her world discovering she has a destiny, a destiny to save the world.

This novel is well written and will draw you in. It’s formatted well for kindle with only a few copy editing issues such as missing words or too many words and once or twice the wrong word, but nothing bad enough to frustrate a reader. The cover is lovely and designed by one of my favorite artists Phat Puppy Art.

This first book in the series is more of a set up book, introducing the reader to the main characters and the protagonist’s problem to solve. It has a climax and resolution of sorts even though none of the story line is resolved, so you will have to read on in the series for an ending.

The main character, Kat, and her development are familiar in young adult fiction, a self-conscious girl pining away for the hot guy at school with an outgoing, beautiful best friend who gets everything she wants. At least Kat has the courage to go for the hot guy when the opportunity presents itself. I do wish YA writers would find a new way to make their main characters sympathetic.

There are two or three scenes with ghostly apparitions to help the reader understand Kat’s plight. Most of this book is about her developing relationship with her new neighbor, her developing relationship with her new boyfriend, and learning the truth about her abilities, not a lot of action until the end. It’s not about her and the ghosts. The way this book ends does promise more with ghosts and action in the next book.

At times, there were scenes of Kat getting ready, taking showers, brushing teeth, that I wish had been shortened to help the pace of the book. Whenever I encountered these scenes, I tended to skip read through them to get back to the real story. A simple, Kat woke up and got ready, would have been plenty. Some readers may disagree.

Despite the comments above that sound negative, I did enjoy reading this book. The writing style draws you in and keeps you interested. The story line promises adventure to come and sets it up well ending the book leaving you wanting more. Even though Kat’s background is similar to other YA books, her personality is interesting enough you will be able to overlook the similar setup.

I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys watching a girl get the crush she has dreamed of, and watching a girl on the verge of becoming a stronger person. Pick it up and give it a try.

I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

From the opening scene the reader is aware that this book will be eerie, perhaps even creepy. Yea! What can I say, I love a little creepiness in some of my reads. It starts with a scene from Kat's childhood, illustrating that she can see beings that others cannot. As a child she's just plain confused (who wouldn't be when your own parents dismiss you as daft?). When we meet seventeen year old Kat, she's learned to hide this ability within herself, hoping if she ignores it that it'll just go away. Well, that seemed to have worked for a while, but nothing lasts forever, especially peace of mind...

Reckoning is written in first person from Kat's point of view so the reader is immersed in her thoughts. We also experience her visions first hand, see the devastating affect they have on her psyche. She prefers to lay low in life, which would be a natural byproduct of her unusual childhood. She tries to stay invisible in school just like she tries to hide from her psychic gifts. I felt an immediate connection to Kat. She begins to experience an increase in visions and other odd events that make it apparent she can no longer hide from the truth. As things begin to spiral further out of control, she seeks answers from the only person that may have them.

Enter Lovell, the sexy and enigmatic new neighbor. Kat is immediately suspicious of him and his motives, not to mention the odd effect he seems to have over her mother. She's attracted to him both physically and psychically which bothers her to no end. She's continually drawn to him, much to her chagrin, since she'd prefer to pretend he didn't exist. He pushes her psychically when all she wants to do is hide her gifts deep within. Lovell seems to know so much more about her than he should which increases Kat's inherent distrust of him.

Rachel is Kat's best friend and quite a character herself. The opposite of Kat in personality, she is outgoing and confident. Though she is beautiful and from a wealthy family, Kat enjoys that Rachel is free spirited and down to earth. Rick is the main love interest. Kat has been crushing on him for a year. He's not a very developed character so I really don't have much to say about him.

I liked the fact that the plot took a few twists and turns I didn't anticipate. This is the first book in a series so the ending is a bit abrupt, leaving the reader with more questions than answers. Yet overall I was satisfied with the ending. Yeah we're left hanging, but not in a way that's just frustrating.

I recommend this book to those that enjoy an interesting paranormal mystery with a touch of creepiness and a splash of romance.

Kat has a secret--she sees dead people. It's nothing new to her, but lately, even a glimpse of a spirit sends chills up her spine. She's beginning to feel unsafe, but with the help of a mysterious new friend, she finds out the truth about her abilities. As it turns out, this type of thing seems to run in the family.

Our protagonist is just a typical teenager. The only difference between her and most others is that she's more sensitive to emotions, which is one of the reasons she can see and hear the dead. There's no one that she can turn to, so she just tries to live her life as normal as she possibly can. When the hottie she's been ogling all year long shows an interest in her, things begin to look up. Unfortunately, whatever force is behind the sudden nightmares and shocking visions won't stop until it has what it wants.

The first half of the story was a little slow for me, but it was still enjoyable getting to know Kat, her best friend Rachel and even her cute new neighbor, Lovell. Though the plot was what caught my interest, I noticed that a majority of the story was devoted to the relationship being built between Kat and Rick. The author knows how to make you suspicious of her characters throughout the story, but I felt as though there could have been more twists thrown in to make it a little more interesting.

The book wasn't completely what I was expecting, but it was good, nonetheless. Reckoning was a fairly quick read, as I got it done in just a few hours, and the characters were mostly enjoyable. My only real disappointment with this book is that there wasn't much ghost interaction involved, which is what I was looking forward to the most.

(Source: I received a digital copy of this book for free on a read-to-review basis.)
Kat has always been able to see ghosts, but she has never told anyone. She just doesn’t know how to convince someone that she can see something that they can’t.
2 weeks ago a girl in a pink prom dress started twirling around the school fields, and no matter how much Kat ignores her she won’t go away. What is it about this ghst that makes her different? Why is it that Kat can’t look away?

Kat also has a new neighbour to deal with – Lovell. He’s gorgeous, his parents are out of town, and her mother seems to keep pushing them together, but there’s something weird about him that Kat doesn’t like.
Where are his parents? Why does he seem to be watching her?

I enjoyed this book. I liked Kat, she was a good main character, and there was plenty of mystery surrounding Lovell, who was a little strange.

I was a little wary of Rick (the love interest) but Rachel (Kat’s best friend) was another great character, and she played her part well.

I liked the storyline, although I thought that quite a lot of time was devoted to Rick rather than the supernatural aspect of the book. The ‘ghost’ girl was fairly creepy, and there were some other creepy scenes too, but thankfully not too scary!

I thought that the grand finale was done well, although it is obvious that there will be a second book due to the cliff hanger ending! A lot was revealed really late in the book, and so there are a lot of questions still to be answered.
Overall; A good YA paranormal, and I will be interested to see what happens in the sequel!

First I want to express my gratitude for being apart of this tour and having the opportunity to review The Reckoning. This book was unlike a lot of books I have been reading lately which really intrigued me, the first chapter drew my attention immediately, my thoughts began to whirl with questions as to what the author had in store as far as plot was concerned. I have to say though I finished the book in a matter of hours, (4 to be exact) there were some parts that were flat for me and began to lose my interests, but the good thing is these parts were very slim to come by.

I loved how Kat at first thinks she is going crazy in certain situations and how (and I know many will probably get wide-eyed on me for saying this) did not fall for the hottie...yet. She stands strong against his good looks, yes Lovell is another one destined to become a book crush of many avid readers out there and listen there is no disappointment when it comes to him, you can tell that he has underlying feelings for Kat even though he never voices it but you can be certain that their relationship will grow, as it would if you are spending some much time with someone.

Now before I give more information that I should I will end my review here. Overall this book had a great pace and capture my attention leaving me grasping my reader hoping that it wasn't the last page but alas it was.

I look forward to the next installment in the series and would recommend this to anyone looking for a fresh new read to add to their goodreads for 2013.

Kat had a secret she kept for 17 years, she could see and hear the dead. up until now she had ignore the strange images and whispering voices. but things were not so simple anymore. increasingly frightening nightmares haunted her, spirits appearing and disappearing, locking her attention on them, making her froze in her steps, even resorting to physical contact. in the meanwhile, a new neighbor moved into the empty house next to theirs. Lovell was good looking yet mysterious, he seemed to have the ability to appear when he was most needed, and held disturbing amount of knowledge regarding her.

with plenty hint of romance and action since the very beginning, the book was easily read in one sitting. the climax was completely unexpected, while the cliffhanger was enough to leave me wanting more from the next book. Kat was a lovable character. following her perspective, it was easy to see why Lovell turned out to be both charming and disturbing. his honesty since the very beginning would be perfect but then, things would definitely get less interesting if he did. with the perfect flow of storyline, i just couldn't get enough.

2.5 Stars

The story of this one was pretty good but I feel like you didn't get enough of it. By the time things started to get interesting it was over.

Katriona, Kat for short, has always been able to see things that other people can't but she has spent her life learning to ignore them. That has become more and more difficult recently and she doesn't understand why. Add in to the mix finally dating her crush and the new hot, but creepy, neighbor and things start to get out of hand for her.

I don't feel like Kat's character was very well developed, you really didn't feel like you got to know her. And Lovell, if he was supposed to be her protector, and has been watching her for years, and knew she had to learn her history, why did he wait till right before things hit the fan to reach out to her. And I don't really see what her relationship with Rick brought to the story.

Finally, I feel like all the important things about Kat's history and her destiny and all that were squeezed into a few chapters and were difficult to follow. So, overall, this one was just ok, I may pick up the next one to see what happens. Hopefully it is more like the last quarter of this one.

Kat can see dead people, which she's pretty used too. Though, one certain ghost won't leave her alone, and she's in more danger than she realizes..

The first chapter sucked me in, it was so vivid and creepy, i loved it.
Though, this all went down hill with the rest of the book, only picking up again at around 70%.

There was a few glimpses of the supernatural aspect, but it was mainly about Kat's love interests. This really bored me, as i didn't really connect to either boy. Rick was boring, and Lovell seemed abit of a stalker. Always waiting for her to come home, always trying to get her to hang out with him.

The ending was great though, but by that point i was too bored to really care.

The supernatural bits were written good, they were very creepy. I just wish the book was more focused on that than the romance aspect.
