My son and I reviewed this book and this is what we have to say. For more reviews visit us at http://motherdaughterbookreviews.com

SON SAYS:

What I liked and disliked:

My favorite thing about this book was that it was funny. One of the funny parts is one nobody is looking at the shelves, the monsters all steal the trophies. It was funny when Mr. Cyclops scares Mr. Blue Dude. I liked that on a lot of the pages there were ghosts and monsters and parts of them in the background. The pictures of all of the monsters are really, really funny. I really liked them. It's funny how they show one of the monsters cheating in basketball by grabbing all the monsters and putting the net down so his team can score.

There was nothing I didn't like about it.

My bottom line:

I liked this book and I would recommend it to all boys but not girls because girls like pretty stuff better than monster stuff.

MOM SAYS:

What I liked and disliked:

Once again Julia Dweck delights readers with a whimsical rhyming tale about monsters, ogres, and ghouls who descend upon Eville, USA for their annual convention. The most striking feature of this wonderful ebook are the absolutely stunning illustrations by Fian Arroy0. The level of detail and quality of images are unbelievable. Further, the variety of monsters and ghouls illustrated is astounding. Visually, the book has so much to offer young and older readers alike.

As always, Dweck provides a silly story told through a series of rhyming verses. These monsters were born to be bad and we really enjoyed seeing some of the ways in which they cheated in games, made scary faces, stole things, and were just plain Evil(le). I think my favorite part was learning about monster education and the three R's: learning to be Repulsive, Rough, and Rude. At least my kids didn't say that wanted to go to THAT school! lol

While we all really enjoyed the book, I felt that this one was a bit more disjointed than Zombie-Kids - the other Julia Dweck book we reviewed. For example, a few pages of the story were about monsters in general, not about the convention in Eville and once the story began focusing on the convention in Eville, it was a bit repetitive. For example, a few pages focused on cheating in the games and a couple of pages focused on stealing. There could have been more variety in the types of bad monster behaviour. That being said, I'm not the one trying to come up with these complex rhymes. For that reason, I'm really labelling that a small parental issue. The kids didn't complain!

My bottom line:

Overall, we all really loved this terrific book and I would certainly highly recommend it to kids 4+. Oh, and I cannot believe what my son said about boys versus girls in his bottom line! Seriously?!

Question: Where do monsters and zombies go to play?
Answer: EVILLE, USA!

Monsters and zombies need a vacation just like the rest of us.
"Evil-doers cross the nation
take a sinister vacation,
away from plotting, planning, lurking,
These villains need a break from working".

The monsters have all kinds of fun in Eville, USA. They relax by a swimming pool with a refreshing beverage, they attend a monster's convention and they compete in athletic contests.

This rhyming story with colorful full-screen illustrations will have children laughing out loud and begging for more.

I worked as an elementary school librarian for 30 years and read many, many, many monster picture books. This ebook is right up there with the best of them!

Ms. Dweck writes original, entertaining and humorous text that will delight young readers. The monsters in this story have unique personalities that children will find playful and even lovable. These are NOT frightening monsters.

Mr. Arroyo has done an outstanding job with the illustrations. Children will be captivated with the details in these monster drawings. I spent an extra 20 minutes looking at these pictures after I read the book.

I read this book on my Kindle Fire HD. The formatting is superb and a perfect fit for the Kindle. There are four lines of rhyming text with each full-screen color illustration. The text is bright and an appropriate size for easy reading.

Kudos to Julia Dweck! She is one of the bright shining stars in the digital publishing revolution. She is taking children's book publishing to the next level and I applaud her.

Prepare to be amused as you enter the world of Eville, USA by Julia Dweck. A place where "Evil-doers cross the nation take a sinister vacation, away from plotting planning, lurking. These villains need a break from working.
Follow evil creatures and monsters through Eville, USA as they attend their annual convention where they practice perfecting their menacing skills and "dreadful schemes."

Julia Dweck is an exceptionally talented author whose rhythmic story will have children squealing in anticipation of the next creature's antics. I loved the vibrant and captivating illustrations by Fion Arroyo. Through his illustrations Eville, USA comes to life.

Eville, USA is a ghoulishly clever story just in time for Halloween or anytime!

Julia Dweck is one of my favourite picture book authors.
I LOVE Eville USA.
The writing is great. Catchy, fun, humours and definitely a book that could make story time a whole lot of fun.

The illustrations are incredible. Bright and fun to look at, all of the monsters are unique and fun. Not at all scary so great for young readers
My favourite illustrator/author combo this far.

I'm sure I've said this about a few of her books but this is definitely one of my top favourites by Julia Dweck.
I could read this one many times and not be bored because your eyes are always drawn somewhere else on the page.

A blessing with kids who love to re-read the same book a million times.

Can not recommend this book enough.

I received a free kindle copy of Eville, USA (KiteReaders Monster Series) by Julia Dweck, Art by Fian Arroyo from Amazon in exchange for fair review. I gave it five stars.

Age Level: 6 and up | Grade Level: P - 2

"Each zombie-brat & creepy ghoul
learns the 3 R's back in school.
They are all taught bad attitude-
To be repulsive, rough & rude."

Monstrously cute illustrations & clever rhyming are the reason I gave this book five stars.

Just in time for Halloween. Free at time of posting.

Welcome to Eville, USA, where monsters take their holiday. They hang by the pool and go to the Dark Convention. They play sports all day and compete in monsterous games. Their time is filled by cheating and stealing. Join these monsters on their wicked vacations, but be careful not to be seen, humans are not allowed.

My 5 year old son loved this book. It has great rhyming schemes and the art work is amazing, it seems to pop off the pages. We will enjoy this book many more times. Another great read by this creative author and illustrator.

The Monsters & Gouls' Conference Meeting Story

I thought it was Avery unique and odd type of story, myself!
I did not really get excited about the way the author portrayed monsters and fouls to be rude, mean and frightening and only thinking of themselves instead of others. I would recommend this type of ebook for kids who love stories of this sort. I guess I am giving this four stars as I could. to lean into this type of way of teaching kids how to behave as most kids model after certain heroes. I received this ebook for free and now am leaving an honest review in return. Quite a creative story Julia and Fian! By Angela

Wow. I wish you could get this kind of stuff when I was in Junior High! Filled with illustrated boogers, warts, and surplus appendages of the highest order, what's not to like for a middle grader? Seriously, the graphics are incredibly rich in detail, probably over the top for the more respectable set, but definitely appreciated by the target age group. Join the multitudinous monsters and gregarious ghouls as they attend the annual convention in "wicked, Eville, U.S.A.", and behave like convention-goers everywhere!

Well, that was disappointing. A good premise and great, gruesome art go to waste here. Clunky rhythm, awful rhymes, and some of the poorest grammar I've ever seen in a published kids' book shoot this book down. If the author had just not tried to stretch herself and stuck to prose, this could have been a good little monster book. As it was, it was just a tedious race to the finish to force myself through to the end.
