Nathan McBride #3

Option to Kill

Rate this book
Nathan McBride has taken down terrorists and torturers. But nothing has prepared the former covert agent for the danger he faces after receiving a strange text from a kidnapped girl.

He conducts a daring rescue of twelve-year-old Lauren, who claims to be in the federal witness security program. When the kidnapper and his thugs continue their relentless pursuit of Nathan and his new charge, it's clear the girl either has something, or knows something that's endangering her life.

Is there a connection between a series of murders on the Mexican border and Lauren's abduction? And why did the girl's mother--a woman Nathan has never met--give Lauren his cell-phone number to use in an emergency?

While racing to stay one step ahead, Nathan questions if this whole thing could be an elaborate trap. Against all his instincts, he must learn to trust the troubled girl in order to solve the mystery, and save their lives.

Andrew Peterson is the internationally bestselling author of the Nathan McBride series. Born and raised in San Diego, California, he attended La Jolla High School before enrolling at the University of Oklahoma, where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Architecture.

An excellent marksman, he holds the classification of Master in the NRA’s High Power Rifle ranking system. His familiarity with weapons and dedication to research has resulted in many speaking engagements ranging from craft workshops to ATF canine demonstrations.

Andrew began writing fiction in 1990 and sold a short story, Mr. Haggarty’s Stop, to San Diego Writers Monthly in October, 1992. After attending his first writer’s conference in 2005, where he met Ridley Pearson, he became serious about writing the Nathan McBride stories.

FIRST TO KILL (FTK) is Andrew’s debut thriller which features Nathan McBride, the brutally effective, trained Marine scout sniper and former CIA operations officer. FTK was originally published in 2008 by Dorchester Publishing as a mass market paperback. Early in January 2011, Andrew signed with Thomas and Mercer. Then in 2012, FTK was re-released in trade paperback, eBook, and audiobook editions. FTK has been translated into six languages.

Nathan McBride is enjoying a quiet night at home, watching a move on the DVD player, when his cell phone rings. This is odd in and of itself, given that virtually no one has the number. Even odder is the message he receives on the phone from someone claiming to be a kidnap victim in great jeopardy.

McBride is not your ordinary couch potato. Rather, he's a highly trained ex-Marine who operates his own security company and who still has ties that reach high into the U.S. government. Within moments of receiving the text, McBride is armed and in his mustang, racing in the direction of the kidnapped victim, who turns out to be a twelve-year-old girl named Lauren.

Nathan rescues the girl, inflicting great bodily harm on several nasty thugs in the process, but this is only the beginning of a dangerous adventure that will stretch out over the next thirty-six hours. Lauren is a very bright and precocious kid, and Nathan cannot begin to imagine why her mother, whom he has never met, would have given Lauren his phone number and instructed her to call it in case of an emergency. Is Lauren genuinely in trouble, or is this part of an elaborate scheme to entrap him?

Whatever the case, Nathan and Lauren are now joined at the hip with some really bad actors desperate to catch up with them. Lauren has helped herself to something of great value to the evildoers, and they will not rest until they've recovered their property. The result is that, for the next day and a half, Nathan McBride will be in the fight of his life--and of Lauren's as well.

This is a very fast-paced novel that races through several highly-charged moments to a particularly brutal climax. McBride will remind a lot of readers of other action heroes like Jason Bourne, and anyone who enjoys their action cleverly plotted and their protagonists smart, tough and daring will certainly enjoy this book.

Few books I've read had a better start, and the suspense does keep going throughout the book. While the plot does get predictable in the middle, the action is great, as is the ending(I'm a sucker for good endings though). A good read overall, especially for action thriller fans.

A true page-turner. Originally published in episodes, cliff-hangers abound. It keeps your interest on several levels. Tightly wound around the relationship of McBride and his (surprise) 13 year old niece the plot roars along. I've read all of Peterson's books and this one is the best in my opinion.

The third in the Nathan McBride series and pretty much like the first two this novel is quite corny!
McBride is a wooden character, the dialogue in the book is stilted, robotic, and unrealistic....people just don't talk to each other like they do in this novel!
The story frustrated me at times, I'm all for a bit of escapism, and pushing the bounds of realism.
The story revolves around a young girl texting McBride for help after being kidnapped. What follows is a series of events with McBride going on a one man quest to bring down a criminal gang with a 12 yr old in tow. This beggers belief as McBride is dating a senior FBI agent and for some unknown reason, ( the author tries to explain why but it never makes sense), he doesn't just call his girlfriend, turn himself in, and let them deal with it!!
The end scenario starts off well as McBride sets out to outfox the baddie but you just find yourself saying 'oh come in get real' when he prevails despite having injuries that would have knocked out an ox let alone a man, one of which is self inflicted!!
The author can write a novel but he seriously needs to make his dialogue more akin to how people actually speak rather than the script from an 80's B movie action script.

Nathan McBride, “the most brutally effective thriller hero to appear in years” (Ridley Pearson, author of Killer Weekend), returns in the third installment of one of the best new series in thriller fiction.

When Nathan McBride receives a text message from someone who claims she’s been kidnapped, it triggers a deadly chain of events that has the potential to haunt him for the rest of his life.

Nathan will soon learn that nothing from his past could ever prepare him for the crisis he’ll soon be facing. The girl’s name is Lauren and she’s just twelve years old. With virtually no experience with children, Nathan’s patience and compassion are about to be tested to their limits

In a violent confrontation, Nathan rescues Lauren from her kidnapper, but as he unravels Lauren's story, he realizes his troubles are only beginning. She says she's in the Witness Security Program, and doesn't trust the US Marshals because she thinks they're complicit in her abduction. Not only that, her stepdad was murdered last night.

In a desperate and unlikely alliance, Nathan and Lauren must stay one step ahead of her kidnapper and the brutal mercenaries who will kill anyone who gets in their way. Played out over the course of 36 lightning-fast hours, Nathan and Lauren must learn to trust each other or they won’t survive.

Stupendo.Imperdibile.

This book is interesting and engaging from page one. Just a fantastic launch to the story. McBride receives a text message from a strange who knows his classified callsign. The message claims the sender has been kidnapped. It's enough to cause McBride to take immediate action. And where things go from there? It's clever, and it will have repercussions throughout the rest of the series. Great character development, well-developed suspense, and outstanding action.

In short, another outstanding Nathan McBride book.

McBride is a truly interesting character...

...Andrew Peterson has developed one of the most interesting new characters I've grown to respect and admire in a long time. I have a few favorites, and Nathan McBride is right up there with with my favs. Peterson has given us a look into the mind of a patriot that has to turn that emotional "switch" off, an essential mindset that is imperative in order to be a sniper. Some can't handle what they are doing, and worse yet... some even like it. Sick, I know, but there it is. Only a handful, a very special few has the ability to be as ruthless as the situation dictates, and yet still remain empathetic for all human life, (even if the target deserves it)...And after they do what must he done, then have the ability to turn the "switch" back to being a mentally healthy person. Peterson really gives us a good glimpse into the mind of an OPERATOR (no one calls them spies anymore) and has created a very deep and complicated character. And the action is riveting! HERE'S A SUMMARY, NO SPOILERS:

Nathan McBride is a loner. The scars on his face, and on his psyche make him rather reclusive. Only his friend and partner Harvey Fontana is really close to Nathan...until now... fate is about to make his small world drastically different. For Nathan, his world is about to get more complicated...and crowded! It seems he has a half sister that he never knew existed...and a niece to boot! A mysterious message, a classified call signal, proof of the situation (along with a twelve year old named Lauren) are dumped into his lap. One look at her eyes, the same eyes that stare back at him from a mirror, are also proof of what's going on; there is confusion and also a deadly human trafficking ring that comes Nathan's way. This is NOT his usual thing! Instead of he and Harv singly going after some elusive target, Nathan has to protect Lauren and find this half sister that he's never know of!? What a time for Harv to he on vacation!!

My first reaction to this story........Oh-my-freaking-gosh!! What an exhilarating adventure!! The action in this book far surpassed that in the first two books! With Nathan tackling ruthless mercenaries by himself and in most cases out gunned and out numbered. The action in this book was so believable and vivid that I had no problems envisioning the events in my mind thanks to the crazy amount of details from Andrew Peterson. Even though I have never fired a gun, let alone held a gun the description of the gun play in this book makes me feel like I already have!!

With every book I read my love for Nathan grows, he is definitely the most formidable character that I think I have ever read and he is quickly becoming one of my all time favorite characters!!!!

But great action is not the only thing that makes this book so amazing. In this book Nathan responds to a cry for help from a girl who knows something about him that she shouldn't. She claims she is kidnapped and instead of ignoring the call, like most would, he responds to her plea and jumps head first into a world of trouble. As he rescues this girl, Lauren he suddenly becomes the hunted as he is seen fleeing the scene of an accident with the girl in tow. Now not only does he have to save the girl from her ruthless attacker, he has to manage to not get arrested. Which proves to be easier said than done. On a crazy race to save the girl and stop the hunt, Nathan discovers there is more to her than he ever could have imagined, and that she will change his life forever!!!

A complete action packed adventure that you don't want to miss! This book solidifies Nathan's stance as a crazy talented, not to be messed with hero who will do anything for the innocent!! I can't wait to see what waits for Nathan next in this amazing series!!

A gripping tense and great book to read it had me absolutely in the story fighting the horrible people too, it was a really good story, well planned and well written and how by gentleness and love you can show someone who has been mistreated and abused into helping you fight the man that caused the pain and suffering and not only to her but there is a twist in the story who the girl Lauren is and I shall not tell you, but he got her to help him in times of trouble and they worked well as a team. If you want to lose yourself in a gripping story which is awesome then this is the book for you, would recommend to everyone who wants to have a really exceptional read. You will not be able to put it down, once you are in the story you are hooked, and you cannot read it fast enough. A thoroughly good read without swearing or sex, so many books these days have these elements which I feel spoil a book, this book was a very good read. On to the next one now No, 4 Happy reading

Narrated by Dick Hill in the same tone and professional manner of all his work, he brings Nathan McBride to life. You listen and think Nathan himself is recalling the story. I have review the first two McBride novels and feel Andrew Petetson has produced his best work to date. I love seeing Nathan's human side opposed to his Marine/CIA side that really can't be separated.

When young Lauren texts Nathan saying she has been kidnapped he knows it's no hoax. Lauren gets his attention by using his secret CIA code name. Nathan leaps into action trying to find and protect Lauren. He immediately finds himself in the middle of a situation he doesn't fully understand. But as McBride is never in over his head he heeds the call and the thrill commences.

Option to Kill is the Best McBride book to date. It is a great listen and makes you want more.

So Much Action In So Little Time!

This chain of events was intense. Nathan McBride was called into a new role, that of brother and that of uncle to a future expert in espionage. It also lead to Jonathan's personal questions about parenthood.

OK, there were also episodes of running, driving--even the kid drove cars and wanted to drive the helicopter--a trip to the mall for a little shopping--and fighting, lots of broken bones, something about a board with nails sticking out of it, guns, NVG's, precious gems, smuggling, murders, and fear. (Or was that just me being afraid?)

To learn more, read OPTION TO KILL (The Nathan McBride Series). Take deep breaths, that might help you survive. K Agle 10-29-14

I just love it when the protagonist can shoot a bad guy and not even blink.

This author really did respect his audience: the descriptions were great, the pace was fluid and fast.

The only thing I didn't like was when the protagonist "supposedly" voiced phrases in "Spanish." These phrases would not have translated well, nor would they have held the same impact. Only a native speaker of both languages would know that, so I don't hold the author entirely accountable but he shouldn't have attempted something he couldn't handle.

I went through a lot of chaff to finally find book I couldn't put down for three days, and had to take everywhere . . .

Sorry, I had to bump it down to a FOUR because the author left some glaring, unanswered questions by wrapping it up too quickly.

Nathan is responding to a text message from someone using his code name from the military. It's from Lauren, 12 years old, who says she's being kidnapped. He rescues her, but the kidnapper's SUV keeps finding them. Nathan discovers young girls are being sexually abused and used as mules to transport alexandrite gems into the country. Lauren's mother, Jin, had been a famous operative in North Korea. Voda is the antagonist who will stop at nothing to get back the gems. It's not believable that Nathan would use Lauren as his spotter or put her in so many dangerous situations. The book left a lot of unanswered questions and Harvey was never part of the action. And I missed him.

I've been enjoying this series about Nathan McBride and his partner Harv and their adventures as a supposedly retired super sniper team. I say supposedly because they can't seem to be constantly drug back into service. Each story is dramatic, fast paced, and the heroes have enough demons to be very interesting character studies.

I loved the pace of this book - the third in the series. It's starts immediately with fast, hard hitting action that doesn't let up.

But occasionally in the middle I felt it dragged when the hero is constantly reviews and re-reviewing of the options in front of him and what the conflicting evidence he's uncovered to date might mean. Once in a while is okay, but repeating the whole 9 yards every time there's a new development got a little old.

Also, the cutesy camaraderie between the good guys where's a little thin, too. The tone of their interactions is just a little to repetitive....always like a short movie interlude where the tough guys bond by slapping backs and making short one-liners about what they're going to do when the catch the bad guys. A little more variety and depth in these interactions would frankly have raised this from a 4 to a 5 star rating for me.

Don't get me wrong, it's not going to win a Pulitzer, but I really enjoyed it! I like the Nathan McBride character. He's super tough and physically imposing, but he's way not a muscle head. He's careful, smart, insightful, and generally has a complexity that makes him very interesting and easy to root for.

The story begins with a scary text message to Nathan by someone being kidnapped. Nathan decides to see what's going on. The action quickly builds, as does the mystery of how this person got Nathan's number and other information about him that's supposed to be top secret. Is she setting a trap, or really desperate for help?

Answers to these questions come together slowly, after several dangerous situations and a growing body count. And the answers will change Nathan's life profoundly.

This is the third in the Nathan McBride series and is pretty fun. Each instalment seems to up the odds a little. In the first, Nathan is introduced and is up against some military/survivalist bad guys, the second is against the drug dealer that tortured Nathan and in this, the third, he is against a criminal that is against a branch of the family that Nathan didn't know exists and the major plot point is that Nathan is accompanied through most of the book by a 12 year old girl.

Lauren, the girl, is actually quite a good addition to the book as it manages to humanise Nathan a fair bit, provides a good explanational tool for the reader and generally provides an emotional prop and someone that isn't a super-skilled operative that Nathan has to protect. Her dialog is even pretty good and the characterisation is on point.

The rest of the book goes through the standard type of events that one comes to expect in this series. The first action set piece does go on a bit too long, but after that it's pretty well paced. As usual, Nathan experiences both incredibly good and bad luck throughout the book and by the end of it suffers horrifying injuries just as bad as the first two books in the series. Seriously, Nathan should invest in a full time nurse to care for the massive trauma his body has been put through.

On the whole, an entertaining read.

Andrew Peterson started a thriller series with a recurring character, a guy who's got demons and dishes justice in situations where nobody else can or even would want to. But he approaches every novel differently. Some explore characters' motivation while delivering ass-kicking adventure. Others, like this one, just jump right into the narrative. Nathan McBride, former Marine sniper and clandestine operative, gets a text from somebody who knows information restricted to a very few. It's from somebody who said she's been kidnapped. He has to react right away. But first, he's got to figure out if it's a trap. Turns out he doesn't have time. McBride must react. Do what he does. Still, Peterson snaps the jaws of the bear trap. McBride has no chance but to deal with one problem after the next. He has a girl to save and subsequently a mystery to solve that becomes exceedingly personal. Peterson treats each of his recurring characters with care and explores their motivations as he unfolds the drama that dates back to the Korean War. Like the others, I read this immediately after the second installment and picked up the fourth right after. I had to keep going with this series.

This is the third installment in the Nathan McBride series and follows McBride who becomes entangled in the life of a young girl who knew secret information to summon his assistance. My only criticism of this book is that the opening action sequence - a very long and multi-faceted escape adventure - went on a little bit too long before we got to know the story and characters. But once we got to know more, this was a great read/listen. Mcbride’s character is much more fully developed in this book, than in the first two, and he becomes a likable guy. The girl, Laren, is also a great character. Overall, I really enjoyed this book.

I listened to the audible version of this book . I'm familiar with Dick Hill from his reading of the Jack Reacher books. He did a good job with this story, but I kept getting confused and picturing and Jack Reacher instead of Nathan McBride.
This was a good story, but the kid in this one was not written in a realistic way. With the exception of killing people she did everything that Nathan's partner Harvey would have done. I just don't think that a child who had been kidnapped earlier in the day would be able to assist in bad guy take downs, operate equipment, drive a getaway Escalade and various other tasks like the kid did in this book.

Having just finished a book that I had to put down every few chapters for a rest and to assimilate the progress so far this 3rd Nathan McBride book was a breathe of fresh air. I was hooked from the first few paragraphs and read it completely in one day with pauses only for food and dog walking!

Just a good rollicking read with a bit of predictability, plenty of violence, pathos and a happy ending; what's not to like.

Now for something completely different before looking forward to book 4.

Best book of the series, totally unexpected the whole way through. McBride is strong caring man and he never goes back on his word. Him having a family was a awesome story that needed to be told. The bad guys were really disgusting and not to bright. Looking forward to reading the next book see what twist and turns capture my interest. I am a committed fan of Nathan McBride

If you are ever going to see a soft side to Nathan McBride, this will be the one for it. Harv just makes a cameo appearance. He does find out that he has a niece and a half-sister. The bad dudes in this one are smuggling rare gems in to the country using young girls, and then killing the girls. They attempt to kidnap Nathan's niece because she is a witness. So this gets McBride involved and the action doesn't let up.

I really liked this story of Nathan McBride meeting his niece who he never knew about before she calls using his secret code and needs his help. Nathan and Lauren are on the run. She has found a dead girl which leads to finding out about gems being smuggled into the US. Her mother has taught her well and the two of them are a dynamic duo. Follow them as they keep saving people and ridding the country of some bad guys. Fast read and well worth the time.

Another great book

Simply ... I love Nathan as he is a one-off. His connection with Lauren in this book was so well written and as much as a character as Nate. I also love Harv too. Some of the regular but characters took a slight back seat in this but that is not a criticism, and in fact is a huge bonus and as an author,do guess a bit of a gamble but this one certainly pays off. Roll on book 4.

Best of the series so far and poor Harv was hardly in it. Nathan finds he has unkown family (so does his dad....plot intrigue). Yes pretty good all round. These novels are defo better than Lee Child. Sorry Lee but the plots are more thought out and keep me interested. The bit where he gets out of the handcuffs ....ouch! Must have hurt. But Nathan keeps going to save the day. Looking forward to the next one.

VERY ADDICTIVE THRILLER

An amazing and very suspenseful thriller about a young girl, an unknown sister and some very bad men. Nathan is called upon to rescue and protect his niece who has been kidnapped upon learning he has a sister whose daughter was taken. This story is full of action and suspense while Nathan not only rescues his niece; but finds a valuable stash of gems, his sister and eliminates the bad guys. Great reading thriller.
