Francis 'Frankie' Wright thought she was an old hat at dealing with the supernatural, until she's reassigned to Edinburgh, the most haunted city in the world.
As a psychic working for MI5, Frankie Wright's job is to make sure that what goes bump in the night stays firmly in the imagination of the British public but after relocating to Edinburgh, her first case soon takes a deadly turn.
Young women are being slain in satanic rituals and it's up to Frankie to find the murderer before he kills again. Frankie must juggle vampires, shapeshifters, zombies and witches, all while trying to keep the truth from her sceptical ex-boyfriend, William Campbell, who just happens to be heading up the police investigation.
The clock is ticking and and she soon finds herself forced to team up with the vampires and shapeshifters in order to stop the killer before he can literally unleash hell on earth.
I admit, this is another book that I skimmed through. It was a free book, but I still got disappointed midway through by various things. Part of it was personal - I thought that the POVs were kind of everywhere and that some of those lines weren't really needed, or were too passive for my tastes. I also hadn't really expected the almost instant falling in love with the vampire either. The reason I am disappointed, though, was I thought that I was going to enjoy it from the first few pages. Oh well, it's an okay fluff piece. :D
This felt incomplete to me, there appeared to be chunks of plot missing, things moved from a to c without b, particularly at the end, still it was an interesting read of a MI5 psychic and a serial killer with help from a vampire and werewolves.
This is an excellent book, especially if you enjoy all things supernatural, which I do. Frankie is a believable character as are all the other people in the book. Plenty of action, some of it scary and a happy ending. This one has it all. I am anxious to read the other two books in the series, they are just too good to miss.
Though I rather enjoy a more adult PNR genre book, this book was actually really entertaining. The writing was fluid with only a few minor errors. The story was engaging and the characters were likable. The story is based more on mystery and problem solving, there is one extremely mild sex scene and some mild violence, actually quite perfect for the YA crowd. Though I really didn't get an emotional connection to the characters, or feel like I was pulled into the story it was an enjoyable read. There are times when throughout the book it feels like your being told what's happening rather than feeling what's happening. If you're looking for a light entertaining read with some suspense and mystery give this book a shot. However if you're looking for something you will get emotionally attached to, this might not be the book for you. This I would peg as a beach read, just a simple story to pass the time. I look forward to reading the other 2 books in the series she has out.
“A vampire, a shapeshifter, a witch, a zombie, a demon, and a psychic. Frankie thought it had the makings of a very good joke but her terror kept her from coming up with a decent punch line.” ~PaST Due CS Winchester brings us a fascinating suspense filled book that grabs your attention and leaves you on the edge of your seat until the final page. Frankie is such a strong character she easily holds her own among some very demanding males! The story line has the unique twist in that the bad guy is human and the good guys working with Frankie trying to save the world are vampires and shapeshifters. This is a must read for anyone that loves suspense, romance, and all things paranormal. I look forward to the second book in this series, Half PaST, where we’ll get to learn much more about the powerful alluring vampire Josh.
It's rare I like a book enough to review but this is one that is well worth the time and effort. You get some very real, complex, likable, unlikable, irritating and wonderful characters thru out this book. There's good Vamp , shapeshifter , physic and other supers that give you what you expect but they ALL break the molds at the same time each with their own inner battles and stories that will make you like them, be afraid of them, pity them and most of all truly know them. That's quite unusual in this genre to find a new twist not only on plot but especially the characters. I truly laughed , got tears and felt with the Characters while they solved the case, kick ass, got their asses kicked and had to face the things we all fear but triumphed . This is a great supernatural who dunit with lots of thinking that gets you involved!
I love Frankie and her vamps. Only trouble is, I don't know which vampire I like more, Alex or Josh!!!
Decisions, decisions...
I like the fact that no one in this book is perfect, they all have good points and bad.
The heroine, Frankie is a damaged person, she's hurting and she's built a lot of walls to protect herself and sometimes that can make her lash out unfairly.
Alex is nice, maybe a little dull and he's definitely controlling. It'll be interesting to see how that plays out in future books, because Frankie is stubborn as hell!!!
Josh is definitely much more pragmatic when it comes to killing. He scares Frankie but there's also a softer side to him. And I love his vampire power!
I thoroughly recommend it and I can't wait for book 2!!!
Past Due was a lot better than I expected it to be. Frankie has a lot of potential, but she has flaws that I can live without too. Her rabid feminism does nothing but annoy me. If you are in a dangerous situation where a vampire is less likely to be killed than you are, allow them to handle the situation. It does not take anything away from you. It seems as if she is using her ideals as more as a reason to argue with people than any real belief system. When Alex tells her that it isn't because she is a woman, but because she is human, she then accuses him of racism. Poor guy can't win for losing. What I look forward to reading about in the next book is Frankie's origins, and the greater potential she might have that Alex has hinted at throughout this book.
Frankie is an amazing character. I loved that she has had to be strong and self reliant but still has this need to not be alone anymore. I loved that author gave so much depth to these characters with out taking the focus away from the story. This story was so fast paced and action packed that I propped my Kindle up so I could read and eat supper. I finished this story in a day because I had to know what happened with Frankie. I found a new author to add to my collection. I can't wait for the second book.
I loved this book. I was hooked before the end of the first chapter. I couldn't put this book (kindle fire) down. My husband had to make me put it away at night so I would sleep.
I really liked Frankie. The ability the author gave her was strange and awesome at the same time. I could feel the pain she felt when using her ability. Frankie, working with M15, causes her to cross paths with a man from her past. Then here comes the things that go bump in the night like vampires, zombies, witches, and shiftshapers. What more could you ask for.
At first I wasn't sure I would really get into this one, but I continued reading in faith. Eventually it became one I simply could not put down. My only complaint would be the rather abrupt ending. After all the work to build up to the climax, it seemed like a rather... we win, the end. There were relationship issues that were left unaddressed at the end. I would have liked to see how these issues resolved rather than just left.
Free kindle download. A shorter book, but very enjoyable. A YA paranormal story. Vampires, witches, demons, shapeshifters. Well written, some love interest. Some subjects I felt could have been more detailed, but this could be that this is the 1st of 3 I believe. I will be getting the 2nd in this series. Very enjoyable, easy reading.
