Author and showman C.D. Payne was born in Akron, Ohio in 1949 (making him a contemporary of Richard Gere and Meryl Streep). He spent his early years in West Virginia and southern Ohio, moving back to Akron while still a mere tot.
He went to public schools in Akron, and then graduated from Harvard College, where he majored in history and participated in the annual spring riot. In 1971 he moved to California. During the next 25 years, he held over 50 jobs including newspaper editor, book publisher's assistant, proofreader, trailer park handyman, and catalog writer.
Since 2004 he has been the proprietor of the Eyelusion Museum, a mobile discovery museum in a restored and polished 1964 Airstream trailer. His latest mobile sideshow is a 1950s miniature town (shown below) called Zippy Town. It can been seen at the Santa Rosa Handcar Regatta and other events.
NICK TWISP??!! Nick Twisp's younger brother?!! Alll-right!!!
Not so fast, bucko.
It's just not as funny. It focuses mostly on regular adolescent male trials and tribulations, not as much happens for like the first 2/3, and it's just not as funny (though li'l bro does end up running away to join the circus). Only worth reading if you're already familiar with Nick, Sheeny, et all.
His sister was even more blunt, having warned Randy to maintain a minimum five-meter distance from her at all times or she'll call a cop. Yet he remains undeterred, being both supremely confident of his appeal to chicks and profoundly ignorant of the metric system.
Too bad, though, they didn't give us guys a little more control over our orgasm timing. I hear some lizards can do it for 12 hours, which may explain why no lizard has ever won the Nobel Prize in anything.
I was sad to see this book (and the entire Nick Twisp series) come to an end. Books 3-6, while extremely 'readable' are not quite up to par with 'Youth In Revolt' (books 1-3) but they are still a pleasure to read and they are laugh out loud funny. But I want MORE!! Please, Mr. Payne, let Noel (nee Jake) write more journals! I grew so fondly attached to all of the characters, it will be hard to let them go.
I love these books. I had my doubts about a 15 year time jump and new narrator, but it's essentially the same. Fun to see where characters ended up and I enjoyed the new generation.
This latest episode in the Nick Twisp saga was also very hard to put down. I liked it as well. It ended sooner than necessary for me, like all of the other ones.
