Without realizing it, Kimihiro Watanuki has purchased a dream. According to his boss Yûko Ishikawa, the mysterious time-space witch, people usually buy good dreams–but Kimihiro’s dream is a man-eating nightmare. Even worse, it has come true! Then Kimihiro meets a wistful girl who, like him, can see the spirit world. Together they try to prevent a harmless ghost from being exorcised from its beloved resting place, an ancient cherry tree. The girl’s mother wants her to have nothing to do with Kimihiro, but the spirits say otherwise. . . .

CLAMP originally began in 1989 as a twelve-member dōjinshi circle, but by 1990, the circle had diminished from twelve to seven. Of the remaining seven, Tamayo Akiyama, Sei Nanao, and Leeza Sei left the group during the production of the RG Veda manga. Other former members of CLAMP also included Soushi Hishika, O-Kyon, Kazue Nakamori, Yuzuru Inoue and Shinya Ōmi. Currently, there are four members in the group.

In 2004, CLAMP's 15th anniversary as a mangaka group, the members changed their names from Nanase Ohkawa, Mokona Apapa, Mick Nekoi, and Satsuki Igarashi to Ageha Ohkawa, Mokona, Tsubaki Nekoi and Satsuki Igarashi (her name is pronounced the same, but written with different characters) respectively. The August 2004 issue of Newtype USA, a magazine specializing in events of the anime and manga subcultures, reported that the members of CLAMP simply wanted to try out new names. In a later interview with Ohkawa, it was revealed that initially Mokona wanted to drop her surname because it sounded too immature for her liking, while Nekoi disliked people commenting that her name was the same as Mick Jagger's. Ohkawa and Igarashi, wanting to go with the flow of Nekoi's and Mokona's name changes, changed their names as well.

In 2006, they made their first USA public debut at Anime Expo in Anaheim, California. They were well received at the convention, with 6,000 fans in attendance at their panel.

We're right around the halfway point, and I'm torn between rushing to see where exactly xxxHOLIC is going and how it ends, and slowing down to savor it. This isn't high-powered, high-stakes reading--not much actually happens in any given volume. (Readers are supposed to be turning to Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle for their action fix, is my impression.) For me this story is much more "about" the feeling of reading it than plot: taking in the art, enjoying the characters and situations and supernatural creatures.

There's a very minor scene featuring a Tsubasa character late in this volume, but since the cross-overs haven't been overbearing since the first volume or two, I'll forgive a few panels of it here and there.

This was interesting because there's finally another seemingly normal character that can see spirits like Kimihiro. It'll be neat to see how that shapes up in the next volume.

This volume really only had two stories: the first was about the New Year and dreams. In the second, the gang meet a little girl who has the same powers as Watanuki.

This was an excellent volume with many interconnected short stories that focused on the known characters more than on various paranormal cases. It was great to see a softer side of both Watanuki and Domeki. Also, the secrets surrounding Watanuki became even deeper once he met Kohane-chan. Oh, and the part where Domeki could see through Watanuki's eye was very intriguing. I love that it gives them a connection of some sort...

Review for complete series

xxxHolic is not the type of manga that I would usually pick up - somehow, stories about stores with special services have never really caught my interests. As it happens to be a CLAMP manga which is heavily interwoven with Tsubasa and also has ties to Blood C, I knew I'd at the very least have to give it a chance. The good thing is, apart from the ending, it's a pretty neat manga series.

Watanuki has always attracted ghosts and spirits and he wishes they would just go away. Fate leads him to Yuko's wish-granting shop, but wishes don't come for free. In order for Watanuki's wish to be granted, he must work in the store and becomes involved in all manners of the supernatural.

The art is easily recognisable as CLAMP's, yet it is different. Everything is in black and whites with no greyscales and the characters' eyes are rather empty looking, even the covers are anything but vibrant. But this is actually very well suited for the atmosphere of this series. I only wish that, similar to Tsubasa, the characters' limbs weren't so unnaturally long.

What I first thought to be a rather bland set of characters soon turned out to be a much deeper and very likeable bunch. It's odd, I was against every character from the start and I can't even put my finger on when it changed, but I ended up loving them all. I must confess, I preferred the first three-quarters of the story more - Watanuki becomes a more serious character after certain events and I just prefered him the way he was before. That being said, I can understand how and why he changed.

Although there is an underlying story that is interlaced with Tsubasa, the rest of the series is very much episodic. The different episodes all revolve around legends and myths and it's very interesting to read about them. Not only are the origins explained, but given the modern setting of this series, they are always shown with a contemporary sample. I am only guessing here, but I feel as though having visited Japan and recognising various elements increased my enjoyment of this series as it really is very heavy on Japanese-lore. This holds particularly true about the Jorougumo chapters - there's just something very unsettling about these joro spiders.

The story can be a little slow at times but it generally has good pacing. It's a nice balance between humour, horror and a bit of moral lecturing - in a good way. Unfortunately, as is often the case, the ending isn't exactly satisfying. In fact, it's not that much of an ending at all; would I not know that this series is complete with 19 volumes, I'd think there is more to come. Thanks to its episodic nature, this series can in a sense conclude at any time it wants to. Yet the underlying story is left hanging in the air and there's nothing in terms of closure. CLAMP has started a sequel (which is one of their many works on hiatus - surprise!) which may or may not remedy this issue at some point, but for that, one will need to wait for the sequel to conclude. Otherwise, there are a few glimpses of Watanuki in Blood C which I feel not that many people know of - have a look if you care to see more of what happened to Watanuki post xxxHolic!

Yuuko lalu mengajak Watanuki menemui Yumekai, sang penjual mimpi.

Intriguing new characters cross Watanuki’s path as he continues to work at Yuuko’s side, along with misfortune and hungry entities. Fortunately Domeki is usually there to stop them or in one instance, one dream instance, Domeki’s grandfather. The results are Watanuki getting closer and closer to Domeki as everything becomes more complicated, much to Watanuki’s chagrin.

The mystery intensfies around Watanuki’s beloved Himawari-chan, even as more is revealed about Domeki. A Dream Buyer (one who buys and sells dreams), Domeki’s grandfather (who looks a lot like Domeki except that he smiles more), and Kohane (a young television medium) all find themselves becoming a part of Watanuki’s life, shaping his experiences in some way. All the while, Yuuko continues to guide Watanuki through the changes he faces, explaining them, often teasing him about them, not to mention throwing him together with Domeki as often as possible. These plot and character-driven elements were depicted in the same lean, dreamlike, aesthetically opulent art style as the rest of the series. For all of this, I give this four stars.

Okay, so the big idea in this volume is good luck dreams (especially the first in a new year), and dreams in general. An interesting concept. Watanuki accidentally gets Himawari's bad dream, which is...ominous.

We also meet Domeki grandpa! He seems like a cool old man, I look forward to more of him. I also love that Domeki doesn't get toxic masculinity, yes he wore a dress, so what?

We Stan.

This volume also introduces Kohane and her abusive mother. I feel for her so much. She helps Watanuki help a spirit find a new tree, and eventually him and Yuko+Domeki help the spirit move on. BUT this volume is obviously more of a set up volume. A volume that introduces characters, concepts and questions.

Questions such as: What does Yuko mean by Watanuki and his choice??

We learn the psychic link is only on Domeki's side, as in Watanuki doesn't see what he sees. Makes sense.

We also get a cameo from...Syaoran? Interesting it's been a while since we had crossover.

We also get page 137, where I ship them. I ship Domeki and Watanuki.

xxxHolic volume 9 is all about dreams and the powers they hold. Watanuki unwittingly become a dream buyer when he offers madeleines to Himawari while discussing their New Year dreams.Through those madeleines he unknowingly buys Dômeki's dream as well. After dreaming through their dreams Watanuki seeks out a dream buyer in hopes of ridding himself of the dream only to find that it is very valuable. In exchange for Watanuki's dream the dream buyer gives him several dreams he has been raising that will bring the dreamer good luck. Through these Watanuki meets Dômeki's grandfather, as well as a young medium.
As always a pleasure to read. Worth so much more than 5 stars.

This volume felt shorter than the previous ones. I'm not sure why. I loved how Domeki's grandpa appeared on a white horse, and Yuuko asking Watanuki why he likes the black haired girl was on par with my thoughts on volume 8. I don't remember from Tsubasa (if it was even mentioned) what relationship Domeki and Watanuki really have but I wonder if they are like Yuki and Toya. I've been shipping them since volume 1 so I'd like it if they ended up together.

I thought it was really nice of Watanuki to help all those people and spirits in this volume with an awareness of what his help did. It felt different. And of course now we know in which part of their journey Syaoran and his group are. A quite sad part.

This was another fantastic and entertaining volume of xxxHolic. I had to stop reading at the 2nd last chapter as it crossed over with Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles. I had to make sure I was caught up the as well. I love that the scene with Syaoran is not just cut and pasted panels from the other manga, but illustrated from another perspective, even the additional glances between Syaoran and Watanuki. It was awesome! I wonder how much more cross overs there will be between the two series.

After unknowingly buying Himawari's dream, Watanuki must find a creature willing to purchase it in turn before it ends up devouring him - and should he survive, he may just meet a fellow witness of spirits, one whose fame may hide a deeply burdened soul...CLAMP brings more heart and humour in this intriguing entry, setting up engaging drama while sticking to its familiar atmosphere and pace. Who is this young girl who feels she needed to meet Watanuki?
