The fourth and final book in the Lost Slayer serial novel.

These were definetly worth reading if you are a Buffy fan. It's like reading an episode that never aired.

The final chapter!

This is the fourth book of four, part of “Buffy, the Vampire Slayer – The Lost Slayer” book event, This is a prose novel that it was published in four separate parts to sell them in a lower price each. Later it was re-published in an omnibus edition.

The story is set at the beginning of Buffy’s freshman year at UC Sunnydale. (Season 4)

THE BOOK EVENT COMES TO AN END

Buffy Summers has been 5 years in the future dealing a dark scenario where Giles is king of the vampires controling all Sunnydale and several of her friends and allies are no more, even the supposed main villain Camaztoz, the Mayan god of the bats has fallen against this Vampire King Giles.

Vampire King Giles is by far, one of the best villains ever conceived in Buffy, the Vampire Slayer, therefore, maybe my only complain in this final part of the story is that the heroes will be dealing with him like in the second act of three, where the climax would be getting back with Camazotz again in the present, obviously is something logical, but nevertheless this “god of the bats” not matter how powerful is and not matter how enhanced are his minions, a new kind of vampires, faster and more vicious, you can’t avoid to feel that once the arc of Vampire King Giles is resolved (I won’t say how), the hype of reading falls a lot since the “cool” threat was Vampire King and Camazotz is like a second banana compared to a Giles turned evil.

Refering to the whole story, the four parts, definitely is very cool novel, totally recommended to any Buffy, the Vampire Slayer fan where you have a dark future tale (someting always cool in any series) where familiar character like Willow and Xander are portraited having to deal with roles that aren’t typical of them but required to the story and where is really awesome to read about them.

Also, the story shows how important is the friendship of Buffy and Willow, where they are stronger together and where they argue for small things is where a mistake can be made causing fearsome repercusions.

Even, you’ll have a new Slayer around that I won’t say much but always a new girl answering the call of the Slayer is something cool to have in any Buffy story.

I did find that the end dragged on quite a bit. It was okay it was very lackluster.

Kinda guessed that vampire Giles was keeping Angel prisoner since Giles as a human always thought a few paces ahead it's no wonder his vampiric self would do the same but for more evil purposes to psychologically torture Buffy.

I feel that Anna, was underused, as a future slayer, though it was nice to see Wesley to become the Watcher he could've been, with a little bit more field experience, it was also implied that future Faith and Wesley had made amends, so I'm guessing in this future Faith never tortured Wesley, only to have woken from her coma and then realize Buffy's disappearance and the Watcher's Council being down a slayer reinstated Faith on active duty, only living long enough to personally train August (the future slayer Buffy accidentally killed earlier) and Anna, the latter having a mentor-student bond that was implied by Anna's thoughts.

By all means, the author wrapped everything up nicely, though it was predictable, at first I thought it would be enough for Future Buffy to stop Vampire Giles and his flunkies, not to mention defeating the ancient Mayan vampire deity (Camazotz) and that would be it and the past would be okay but it made sense for Buffy to return to the past somehow with the future Willow's aid at the right moment (before past Buffy had alienated herself from her friends) to stop future events unfolding before Giles is turned in the first place.

The characters just didn't seem that deep on the page in this final chapter due to all the running around trying to defeat the villain of the story in both past and future, if you're not a fan of the show or familiar with the characters it would be a bit disappointing, for example, even characters such as Anya wasn't as vocal or expressive from what I'm used to.

But despite all that, still an interesting plot and enjoyable read for any Buffy fan!

And here we have the conclusion to this series, and I have to say that I'm not entirely sure if I enjoyed it. It was an okay read, but I've read better tie-ins than this one. The storyline was very much predictable, but I liked how it all wrapped up. Overall, it read like a long BTVS episode, so I'm not sure if it will appeal to non-fans of the show who are not familiar with all the details.

The Lost Slayer is a novel in four parts which were published serially in separate volumes in the fashion of King's The Green Mile. Golden did an excellent job of keeping it all moving, establishing everything in the first volume, tying it all up in the last, and introducing the situation without tedium in the later ones. The story takes place in a future mirror-world, much like the famous Star Trek universe reached by the faulty transporter or perhaps more like one of the X-Men arcs where the past must be changed or the present saved in order to fix the future. The characterization is delightful and plausible, if somewhat reminiscent of the world created by Anya the demon in the episode where she granted Cordelia's wish that Buffy had never come to Sunnydale. (Especially Giles!) The serial nature of the original publication was excellent in that it re-created the episodic nature of the series in having to wait for the resolution to the cliff-hangers. This was one of the best Buffy novels.

Caution: Spoilers abound if you haven't read the first 3 books in this series.
The final showdown with Giles, King of the Vampires is at hand. However, even if they beat him, the price will be high. Buffy and her friends must find a way to send Buffy-at-nineteen back before she made the fatal mistake that caused all of this.
The only complaint I have about this is that although most of the dialogue is very true to the show, Anya's lines all ring flat. Fortunately she doesn't figure much in the tale. Besides that, the action is well-rendered (I had much less trouble visualizing the scenes than I did in the last couple volumes in the series), and the story itself is very compelling. Very well done.

This serial improved with each addition. The final book being the best. The more it deviated into a creative and unique story taking liberties with the characters the better it got.
Battles were a little but snoozy, but the story ended up being really good and worth my time overall. Would recommend.

I found the ending to this novel series tended to drag on and felt so drawn out. It could have stayed the same length of the previous entries.

Not a bad story at all, but love the thought that these epic, apocalyptic battles are supposed to take place in between seasons and episodes.

It was a total slay. Seriously, this is a must for all Buffy fans. It’ll make you actually appreciate Xander Harris.

My only critique for the series is the concerning lack of Cordelia Chase - if Wes can be Mr. Watcher, surely we could have found a way for Vision Girl to help save the day.

This was the fourth book in a mini series. I don't think any of the books was really a stand alone, but of one could it would be most likely with this one.

The fourth and final "Lost Slayer" novella is 40+ pages longer than the other 3 and I am not sure that was necessary. We get passages from the perspective of a new character (that is not part of the scoobie gang), I enjoyed reading them but it was inconsistent with the narration so far and didn't add much. Furthermore the longer page count highlighted Golden's rather flat writing style unfavorably, I kinda wanted it to end rather sooner than later which is sad because I enjoyed the plot. It's a great adventure, a wonderful what-if-scenario that made me crave for my beloved show to rise from its grave.
Yet it also shows how much better the show is, "Buffy" even in its weaker moments and not so great plot developments was always filled with depth and symbolism, it created emotional connection that was slightly lacking here, and for some reason was specifically lacking in the conclusion that is "Original Sin". I wonder if my reading experience would have been different if I had read the bind up of these for volumes?!
Yes, I had fun with this but "Buffy" was always a bit more than just fun. This was a great concept that needed something more eloquent, something more tangible (like maybe a Joss Whedon) to give me what the show gave me. But as a light summer reading experience there is nothing wrong with a good dose of Buffy nostalgia.

http://nwhyte.livejournal.com/2513777.html

Set in early Season Four (Xander and Anya are together, so are Oz and Willow), this has Buffy yanked forward to an alternative future in which Giles has been turned vampire by the ancient demon Camazotz (I'd always thought that was just the evil planet of A Wrinkle in Time, but it turns out that it's also the name of an Aztec god of bats). This gives Golden licence to kill off many characters both new and old, before returning Buffy to our time line where everything is almost as before. It's well enough written, with reflections on how the other characters would have developed in five years where they had continued the fight without Buffy.

I'm troubled, though, as I was in the other book I read by this author, that the story ends up on the wrong side of colonialism - Camazotz, who is after all a native American entity, is rapidly outsmarted by vampire Giles who takes charge of his realm and allows the indigenous inhabitants only as much licence as he finds amusing; and this is presented as a natural development. So I may cast my reading of Buffy a bit wider, but I think I will try other writers next.

The last book in the serial and Buffy has some hard choices to make. There is a lot to lose but a whole world to gain as the Scooby Gang, in its future form, fight Giles and his minions. And all the time Buffy doesn't know when her 19 year old self will be ripped away and sent back in time, to repeat the mistakes that led to such a hard, cruel future. Only with the help of Willow and a long dead Slayer can she hope to return in time to stop it all happening.

A brilliant ending - sad in places and yet powerful. Although I did really, really enjoy reading these, I couldn't help thinking that they should have just concentrated on sending Buffy back sooner, so that it could all be stopped so much earlier. But then you wouldn't have had such a cool, dystopian future to explore with such twists on our beloved characters. Overall, a great serial that I'm glad I spent a weekend reading - makes me miss the TV series all over again!

This was the conclusion of the Lost Slayer Series, and I’m so sad it’s over. It was quite good. I really think it would have made an awesome 2 part season finally when they all first went off to college.

Christopher Golden never seizes to amaze me with the excellent Buffy stories he creates. He really seems to be on the same page as Joss Whedon when it comes to Buffy.

In this book Buffy, Willow, Xander and Oz are heading into Sunnydale to take out Giles and put an end to the evil regime he has lead and is slowly spreading through the States. Buffy is also enlisting Willow’s help to try and return her 19 year old soul to the past so she can stop this madness before it even begins.

This series is definitely a quick must read for any Buffy Fan. :0)

Sadly this series will never be an actual episode of Buffy The Vampire Slayer. The greatest episode, and better than some episodes, to never be. This mixes, movie/TV/book lore from the entire verse very well.

The fourth part of this series. Buffy now forced to deal with what she's been trying to avoid, stopping Giles at any means possible. She also still needs to figure out how to get back to her time and stop the events that led to the horrible future she landed in. An interesting ending to this story.
