I'm not one of those people who knew from birth she was destined to become a writer. I always loved to read and throughout my childhood I could usually be found with a book in my hands. To the disgust of my friends, I even enjoyed creative writing assignments that made them all groan. But I had other dreams besides writing. I wanted to be an actress or a teacher or a lawyer.
Life took a different turn for me, though, when my mother made me take a journalism elective in high school (thanks, Mom!). I knew the first day that this was where I belonged.
After I graduated from college in journalism, I took a job at the local daily newspaper and I reveled in the challenge and the diversity of it. One day I could be interviewing the latest country music star, the next day I was writing about local motorcycle gangs or interviewing an award-winning scientist.
Through it all -- through the natural progression of my career from reporter to editor -- I wrote stories in my head. Not just any stories, either, but romances, the kind of books I have devoured since junior high school, with tales about real people going through the trials and tribulations of life until they find deep and lasting love.
I had no idea how to put these people on paper, but knew I had to try -- their stories were too compelling for me to ignore. I sold my first book in 1995 and now, more than 30 books later, I've come to love everything about writing, from the click of the computer keys under my fingers to the "that's-it!" feeling I get when a story is flowing.
I write full-time now (well, as full-time as I can manage juggling my kids!) amid the raw beauty of the northern Utah mountains.
Even though I might not have dreamed of being a writer when I was younger, now I simply can't imagine my life any other way.

Much, much better story than the previous. Caidy was sweet and kind and Ben got over himself quickly and let his inner nice guy shine. The kids were less a factor in this one, more of a background than anything else. Which is good because they fit the Bowman family well and let the story be about family in a general and specific way that felt natural—Caidy being the favored aunt and all.
And I think I'll keep this review short as there's not much else to say. Which I tell myself is fitting as the book is a short one. Part of what made this excel, though, and what nearly pushed it to five stars, was the Christmas-based emotional payload that Thayne pulls off beautifully (i.e. without cloying but still with all the impact it deserves). The final confession of love was gorgeous. There were tears...
If you're looking for a seasonal read with a strong Christmas flavor, you could do lots worse than giving this one a shot.
This is a lovely holiday romance featuring a hero and heroine who both have tragic pasts to overcome. There's also some very lovable dogs in this book and a lot of Christmas spirit. Another enjoyable read from RaeAnne Thayne.

Review:
"A Cold Creek Noel" by RaeAnne Thayne was a sweet holiday 'Christmas' read that happened to be this authors second in this series. This was a story of Caidy and Ben along with 'adorable kids, dogs and horses.' We find that this widower Ben Caldwell was a new vet in Cold Creek along with two children wanting to escape his past. Caidy Bowman have suffered greatly due to the fact that her parents were brutally killed. Caidy had once had dreams of becoming a vet but these day she is found working at the family ranch and helping raise one of her nieces. After Caidy takes her pup to the vet and finding out that the Vet needed a place to stay...later after the vet is offered and moves into the 'Foreman's' house. As you read you will seek how these two people are being thrown together in one way or another. You will find that Caidy's brothers invites Ben and his children over for a sleigh ride and Sunday dinner. Will these barriers that are keeping these two apart be dissolved? This is where I say you must pick up "A Cold Creek Novel" to say how this author will get this all out to the reader. The characters were all well developed giving you a good realistic and enjoyable read.
This was one happy fun Christmas story with a lots of 'love warmth, good, strong likable characters, kids and dogs all wrapped up in one excellent novel. Would I recommend? YES! This would be a wonderful holiday novel to read.
I jumped into Caidy's story right after I finished Taft's (A Cold Creek Reunion, which I read in the advance copy edition of The Pines of Winder Ranch: A Cold Creek Homecoming\A Cold Creek Reunion). I enjoyed this one slightly less than Taft's book. Maybe because Taft's book is about second-chance romance, and I really felt for him.
Caidy and Ben started with a left foot -- well, a bit -- when Caidy brought her injured dog to Ben's practice and the new vet was a bit dismissive towards her. But of course things get better quickly after Ben finds out more about Caidy -- that she's NOT an irresponsible pet owner! -- and Caidy also learns about Ben and his two children.
I just found that their relationship was moving a bit fast -- and there wasn't exactly a huge problematic conflict between them. I mean, Ben's patient is the DOG not the human. So the whole push and pull thing wasn't as engaging as the one I found on Taft's book.
Still the romance wrapped up wonderfully, and we got to read all about the Bowman's clans and their happy ending. That's always lovely.
Let me tell you this story started off as doozy. Even more than I was expecting or was prepared for. It nearly broke my heart and killed me as it was the rush to save Luke the dog’s life. It was gut wrenching to hear his whimpers of pain and distress. I wasn’t ready for that so it really hit me hard. I’m not fan of injured animals or animals suffering in pain at any time. It just hard for me to read because it just hurts me so much. Luke wound up being okay in the end, but it still was a lot. It was the impetus of getting Ben and Caidy to meet since Ben was the new veterinarian in town so I get why it was in the story, but I just don’t like reading about animals pain. Not a fan so I had to get passed the chapter in order to get into the story fully.
Aside from the reason of Ben’s and Caidy’s first meeting, I did like the little head butting between them during their first encounter. It was very easy to see the sparks flying and reflected the great chemistry they had. It was great verbal foreplay. The banter was really good. It just showed how they could push each other buttons, which was fun as well. I knew they were going to have quite a ride together.
This one had more emotional baggage in it than I was expecting. It wasn’t the cute, fluffy family Christmas romance, but instead it dug very deep into the emotional. It was raw. It was heartbreaking. At times it was like a punch in the gut in what Ben and Caidy had to deal with in their journeys in life. It hit raw for me, but that was what it made it so good and what I enjoyed most about it. I liked seeing digging beneath the surface and exposing the hurts and pains to each other in order to heal and move on in life again.
Once again I loved the small town feel of the story as well as the whole family aspect. I found it really entertaining to see Ben get to know the town as well as its citizens. I loved all the interactions in the book whether it between Ben and Caidy’s brothers, or Caidy and her brothers, or even just friends, or even how the children interacted with each other was really lovely and sweet. It was so adorable to see the adults interact with the children. It just made me feel all warm and gooey inside. It just gave that great hometown feel that I love getting in small town romances. It was freaking hilarious to see the matchmaking that was going on whether it would be her brothers or friends or whoever, it was no secret that they wanted Ben and Caidy together. It was so cute and fun to see. I loved the meddling going on. It just made it fun and entertaining, balancing that deep and intense emotional stuff that was going on. It needed the balance.
This had great Christmassy vibes to it. I felt like this was a holiday read with all the goings on that were happening like the sleigh ride, the Christmas party, and the wrapping of Christmas gifts. What added to this was the fact that she was the one the didn’t like Christmas (for good reason), which was a gender flip of what the norm usually is in these types of stories. I appreciated so much that Ben wanted her to have a great Christmas and wanted to make the holiday memorable in a good way, instead of being jammed with all the drama that she associated with that holiday (actually the whole family was uncomfortable around the holiday for good reason). Even though she was helping him during the Christmas activities with his children, he still wanted to get down to why she hated the holidays and make it better for her. Just be there and support her while trying to bring some joy into her life because he knew she more than anyone deserved it. I liked seeing him encourage to embrace the holidays and enjoy them. Enjoy them with him as well as his children. I really liked that.
As for the romance, I liked the overall arc of their storyline as they made this journey together through the story to grow and heal with one another, however I felt like something was missing at the end that just didn’t quite hit the mark for me. I was not satisfied with it. I felt there was just a missing piece there. It was almost too easy despite the fraught journey they made to get to that point. After everything that happened, I think there needed to be a little bit more of grand gesture on Ben’s part especially after he rejected her two or three time. There needed be something bigger than him just saying “I love you” and then everything was peachy after that. Yes, the moment he said he loved her the first time was during a difficult time when he was supporting her and being there for her. He was very sweet and loving, yet I just felt let down with the declaration. I don’t know how else to describe it. I needed more.
I know this was a romance where the focus was meant to be between Caidy and Ben, but I felt like with so much emotional baggage going on and certain issues that were brought out as Caidy and Ben became more emotional intimate with each other, I think there needed to be a scene between Caidy and her brothers about how much guilt she felt over her parents death. It was a huge, huge thing especially with how their parent died. Just how much emotional trauma Caidy dealt with for eleven years that was never brought to the surface until Ben. It didn’t need to be with all the brothers but there should have been a scene with Ridge over this especially since earlier in the story he confronted her about going to school and moving on with her life. I think if Ridge and Caidy needed to have at least one heart to heart where everything was put on the table. Ridge finally understood why she kept herself hidden away at the ranch for so long. I think that would have been a real powerful scene. I think would be an extra helpful scene for Caidy because I think she would have been more able to heal with the weight off her shoulders. She did do that with Ben, but I would have liked to have seen it with Ridge as well. It would have been more of an emotional payoff for me personally.
Even though getting through the beginning chapter was a little tough with an injured Luke, I did enjoy this story overall. It was a lot more emotionally heavy than I thought it was going to be, but that was what made it so good. I loved it was raw, heartbreaking, and intense. It really was gut wrenching as past hurts were revealed more and more as the story progress especially in Caidy’s case. That was just a stab in the heart, and it made me feel so sorry for her at what she had been through, but it also made me understand her as well. It was a roller coaster of a ride in the emotional stake for sure. I did like the small town feel. I loved family aspect. I liked the chemistry and verbal foreplay that Caidy and Ben had from the very beginning. They had some fun and cute moments, but also very intense ones as they revealed things to each other that they never had before. It was nice to that trust build and developed after a couple hiccups in the road. They just had a great connection I thought. I was disappointed in the end because I thought it was missing something. The emotional pay off just wasn’t there for me at the end. I wanted that emotional pay off especially after all the emotional stuff that happened throughout the story. There needed to something more. Even though he was there for her multiple times in the story, I just felt like he needed to make up to her more due to the fact that Ben rejected her multiple times before. It hurt her deeply, but that was never really addressed or apologized for hurting her. But that just my personal taste. It was still an enjoyable read.

Good book. Ben had come to Pine Gulch to help his family recover from the loss of his wife and to get his children away from the bad influences of his in-laws. He wanted to concentrate on his children. He did not expect to be attracted to Caidy and didn't want it at this time. I liked the way he was so kind and caring with the animals, though his attitude toward Caidy the first time they met didn't show it. I also liked the fact that he did apologize to her for the way he had acted. Coming from the city, Ben was not used to the openness and friendliness of the small town atmosphere. Besides his immediate attraction to her, the way the Caidy took care of him and his kids went a long way toward making Ben think there was a future for them together. Caidy had basically been hiding out on the ranch since her parents' murders eleven years earlier. She was carrying a lot of guilt since she felt it was her fault they had been at home that night. At first she didn't like Ben at all, but the more she got to know him the more she liked him. She fought the attraction, but it was a losing battle. I liked the way that she was able to overcome her dislike of the Christmas season to help make the holiday better for Ben and his kids. The way that she was able to open up to Ben about her parents also showed that she felt more for him than she thought she did. I loved the closeness of the Bowman family and the way that there is always room for more to be included.
I've enjoyed all the Cold Creek books and I was happy to finally read Caidy's story. After years of pain it was heartwarming to read about her finally finding the love and family she deserved. For years she's lived a very sheltered life but with the arrival of the new vet, Dr. Ben Caldwell and his two young children, Caidy finds herself wanting to face the world again.
It is a heartwarming story based on Christmas, with characters who are insecure due to their tragic past. RaeAnne knows how to create characters who reflect everyday issues people encounter in life. These issues are relatable, and readers can sympathize with them. She provides the readers with the personal struggles both Caidy Bowman and Ben Caldwell lived with.
RaeAnne is known for creating sparks between her characters. When Caidy and Ben first meet, there are fireworks, but the character's arrogance puts a damper on the possibilities. Ben is a veterinarian who is a widower with two young children. Caidy has hidden away on her family ranch due to the horrifying deaths of her parents, which she takes the blame for.
The magic of Christmas will bring Ben and Caidy to a place of forgiveness, love, and happiness. Two animal lovers will create a strong bond they will not be able to unravel. They are both family-oriented and always looking to help others. Love can overcome the demons of the past. A story based on Christmas always brings the joy and magic of the holiday season.
Deja Vu, Caidy and Ben's Love Tryst! 3.25*****Spoiler Alert¡
Caidy' s rapidly evolving romance and love with the new vet, Ben Caldwell DVM, reminded me of Nate and Emery' s rapid one week romance. The two kids, and the lonely, frustrated grieving male father figure at Christmas, who both quickly jumped at the kindness offered to them by the single attractive female. This led to purging of their souls, a quick succession of dueling tongues(kissing), and instant love and marriage. The characters from Hope Springs, Emery, Tallie and Claire, were at the McRavens' Christmas Pool party.
This novel was a carbon copy of Emery, and Nate' s Christmas with the Hope Spring Daltons. Cute, but very repetitious, and the ‘concerned, malevolent, vindictive grandparents’ did not call Ava and Jack once in the novel, nor did they show up to whisk the kids away from their unworthy, irresponsible father. I gather distancing the kids from the Nana worked. Tsk, tsk!!

Caidy Bowman was forced to hide when her parents were killed. She hated Christmas because of it. She cared for the animals on the family's ranch. One day, Luke (a dog) had a run-in with a bull. She took him to Dr. Ben Caldwell's office. Ben was a widower with two children. Caidy met them while waiting for her dog. The Caldwell's were living at the Cold Creek Inn but it was close to Christmas and Caidy told them of the foreman's house at the ranch. One night, she calls him to come to look at Luke and they kiss. They both regret the kiss. But, the female members of the family see the chemistry between them. Eventually, they admit to each other that they are in love.
This is a well-written book. It is very romantic and though the doctor has a sexy dream, kissing is the only romantic action between them. It is nice to read a good romance.
This is a 3.5 star story since it is a short story. This is a lovely Christmas story about two people not looking for anything but to be left alone but then fate steps. Caidy Bowman needed a vet immediately and the only one available was the new vet Ben Caldwell who didn’t seem to like her at all. Before finding out exactly what had happened to Caidy’s dog, he was ready to blame her for everything. When two hardheaded personalities clash, there are sparks but neither of them saw the lightening. Ben had come to town with his two children trying to make a clean break from his late wife’s family and did not need complications with a good looking cowgirl. Cute story that will warm your heart.
I'm having such fun reading the Cold Creek Cowboys series. Each one is so touching, full of love, hurt souls looking to move forward, and HEA's. This one is a great addition to the series and I really like the characters of Caidy and Ben. Heartbreak, laughter, moving past old hurts and fears, family, and love. Connecting with "old friends" from the previous books makes them even more fun. Many of the stories in this series occur around Christmas, making this a particularly enjoyable time to be reading the series.
This is a sweet novel about a woman who lost her parents and still lives on their ranch with her brother and his daughter. She trains dogs. When a new vet comes to town a misunderstanding starts them off badly, but soon they are spending time together. He and his children miss his late wife. Can she be the one to help them heal. Can they help her heal.
Great story. Caidy and Ben's story. I was so glad Caidy finally told him to make up his darn mind cause I was beginning to dislike him. Loved all the characters. Excited to read Ridge's story in the next book.
RaeAnne Thayne has the makings of a good story here, but on this book her editing was off. There were quite a few issues where things contradicted each other. Seems like it was rushed to completion.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I like cowboys paired with romance paired with Christmas. It’s like magic to my brain and eyes and I just nomnomnom it right up. A Cold Creek Noel by RaeAnne Thayne is no exception and I wish it had actually gone on a little longer, although, I suppose it was great just the way it was. This actually appears to be part of a series, and upon research on Goodreads, it seems I picked the 11th – and most recent – book in the series to grab up. Looks like I have some reading to do! A Cold Creek Noel centers on Caidy Bowman and Ben Caldwell, the new vet who has moved to town with his two children, with plans to escape his past. But Caidy is trying to escape hers, as well. Or rather, at least trying to forget it by stymieing herself from moving on, and staying at the Bowman ranch forever. Unfortunately (fortunately ) for her, Ben shakes her world up, forcing her to look herself in the mirror, and face her future. I enjoyed A Cold Creek Noel a lot! It had just the right amount of romance, without being overly sickeningly sweet, which for me, is the biggest turn-off in romance. The interplay between Caidy and Ben was great; there is a lot of push and pull between them, and as the reader, I know where I want them to end up, so it’s just frustrating enough to keep reading – and rooting – for them. I also really liked the familial bonds within the story and characters: it all felt very realistic, and not like the set of some Norman Rockwell painting where everything is hunky dory. Certainly there is conflict, but it’s obvious this family loves each other. The plot…I’m not sure what more I can say about the plot. It’s a standard romance novel, with a bit of holiday thrown in. Caidy really needs to go on a path of self-discovery before she can love someone else. And you know what? So does Ben, but they can also traverse the path together, as friends would. You know what else I really liked? The entire premise for this story begins with Caidy’s dog getting gored by her bull, prompting her to take Luke to see the vet. There is quite a bit of talk throughout the novel about the care of animals, and how much they can become family. This spoke volumes to me, but I really loved that it was done without being preachy. Overall, the setting was fabulous. I pictured everything as I believe the author intended, but it’s hard not to. I’ve been out in that area before (not specifically Utah, but out West in general) and it’s picturesque. I think this is a great romance novel to sink your teeth into, especially for the holiday season, and I know I’ll be looking up more from this author and, specifically, this series.
A charming romance with lots of animals and Christmas Season. This is a clean read. Caidy Bowman raises ranch dogs. She lives with her brother on thier family ranch. She is helping her brother take care of his daughter after her mother left. Caidy and her three older brothers have a time celebrating christmas after thier parents were murdered 11 years ago. They try to keep the children not to know how hard of time they had. Caidy dog Lucy got attacked by a bull and she was able to pull him out of the way before the bull got too far into him. Caidy rushes her dog to the new Vet in town. Ben Caldwell is the new Vet. in town. He is rude and taking his bad mood out on her. Ben is a widower with two children girl 9 boy 5. They are staying in the bed and breakfast because thier house won't be ready till after christmas. Being in a bed and breakfast is hard on his kids and housekeeper. Caidy has a empty house on the ranch till they can hire a new foreman so she offer it to Dr. Caldwell. Everyone wants to set up Caidy and Ben together, but they don't want to get involved. They are very drawn to each other and everytime Ben kisses her he then apoligizes for it. I love the big close family the Bowman's have. How they all pulled together after the death of thier parents. One brother is Chief of Police in town his twin brother is Chief of fire and the oldest is in charge of the ranch. I like the characters in the book and want to see more of them. Especially the little children you just want to give them a hug. I admit that I did tear up in this novel. Our pets do bring a lot of love and joy into are lives and when they get ill we feel so much. Would like to read more about the Bowman family. I was given this ebook to read in exchange of honest review from Netgalley. Publisher: Harlequin Special Editon (December 1, 2012) 221 pages
pub Nov 29 2012 A Cold Creek Noel by RaeAnne Thayne Caidy Bowman has brought her dog in to the vets, Ben Caldwell office to get fixed. He was gored from the bull after the bull had stepped on him. Her sister in law runs the local Inn and her brother is the police chief and the other brother head of the fire dept. She doesn't care much for the doctors bedside manners... The Inn is where the vet and his 2 kids are staying and Ann Michaels is their nanny. Caidy hopes to set the family and nanny/housekeeper up in one of her ranch houses that is not being used. She is happy the family will have a home and a tree for Christmas as their house should be ready in a few weeks time. She has her dog back now but has to call him at an ungodly hour because there's something wrong with the dog and they get to talking and before you know it, after he gets the dog under control, they are kissing. Other members of the family have invited Ben and his kids over for Sunday dinner then a sleigh ride and she gets roped into going. She finds herself thrown together with him and/or his kids, she wants to help them out also and hopes spending time with the kids making cookies will help. That leaves them with plenty of time to talk about his wife that had died a few years ago. Love all the homemade baking she does and how she lets others help. She and Ben spend a lot more time together and she opens up about her parents death.. Christmas Eve comes and once again her dog is sick and she hurries over to his house ... realizations take hold, good and bad...
With Tomorrow being Thanksgiving here in the U.S., I am ready to get into Christmas Mode! I love reading Christmas stories, and Harlequin is more than happy to fill my need for this delicious past time! A Cold Creek Noel is no exception to this rule!
After some searching, this is the third in a set of books about the Bowman siblings, who were left as orphans when their parents were brutally murdered during a robbery gone wrong, just a few days before Christmas. As a result, Caidy and her brothers dread the holiday. And worse? Caidy, the baby of the family, feels responsible for her parents murder and as a result has put her life on hold in a major way.
Doctor Ben Caldwell is the new Vet, just moved to town from California and he and his two children are left living at the local Inn over Christmas - so of course, Caidy offers up the Foremans Cottage at the family ranch.
One thing leads to another, and we have an incredibly sweet romance! (With a few very funny moments - including this Teaser Tuesday!) This story is intricate, full of family stories and dark histories. I am always impressed by RaeAnne Thayne's writing and how much she can pack into 220 short pages!
The only drawback is that the last portion of this story felt a bit rushed, but to me? That's something to be expected in these short tales!
If you're looking for a good Holiday read? I highly recommend A Cold Creek Noel! (It's available for November and December at your local store - and as always through Amazon, Harlequin's website and Barnes and Noble!/
