Jenni Kaye grew up reading books about big red dogs, cats with hats, and soups made of stone. Now she shares these tales with her daughter. Kaye, also known as J.K. Mahal, is a graduate of Chula Vista Performing Arts High School and Loyola Marymount University. She worked as a newspaper journalist, page designer and editor, as well as a performing arts center publicist, before devoting herself to writing books.
Kaye lives on a hill in Santa Cruz with her husband, child, cat, dog, four fish (one of whom is named Bob) and a smattering of underwater snails. Visit her at www.jennikaye.com.
While not all of the words are at the level you might expect in an ABC book, they are all themed nicely. A couple of the rhyming patterns didn't seem to flow as smoothly as others, but I think that if a child got this book, the theme and illustrations would compensate for the awkwardness. If you love Halloween, like I do, you will probably enjoy this book. If not... well, there is something seriously wrong with you! LOL
The thing is that it doesn't matter that the wording isn't stereotypical... It is so adorable that I have a list of people that I plan to buy if for as presents!!! (and not all of them have little kids)
All Hallow’s ABC is a delightful, fun read for young kids. Each page contains a rhyme and gorgeous illustrations of ghosts (not the scary kind, think Casper), little vampires, Victorian houses, skeletons, and much more. The illustrations are age-appropriate, and they fit the story well. As the title suggests, the book goes on to explain the ABC, but in true Halloween fashion. For example: “A is for apples we’ll bob tonight, B is for a ghostly boo! We shiver in fright.” These are two pages, so there’s rhyme every other page.
The rhymes are well done, and some of them would, no doubt, make a child laugh out loud. I’m not a child anymore, and even I enjoyed it! The illustrations weren’t overdone, and they really fit the theme. The book was well-formatted, and everything about it was a good choice, from the font to the illustrations to the colors. The author did an amazing job.
I’d love to read more kids books by this author. She clearly has the talent to keep her text uncomplicated and fun, while actually teaching kids something.
Adorable and short children's Halloween book which my child loved! I thought the pictures were great, in black and white with the stark contrast of bright bold colors. My son, who was 4 when I read it to him and is now 5, really enjoyed guessing which word would end each rhyme.
This cute Halloween book can be shared with very small children with short attention spans, so I recommend it to anyone with kids!
It's such a cutie little book. It Rhymes and everything. A Child would like this very much. I think it could have used a little bit more Color in the pictures - but It's still over all a very Nice book and any child would love to read this over and over again during Halloween. :)
We can't seem to put this one down. My seven year-old likes to flip through the illustrations when we're in the car or just hanging out. It's clever, cute and if there was a shirt, I'd wear it!
Very cute child's book. The 3 year old I read it to loved it. He carries it around and calls it his "schoolbook". He loves the ABC's and the cute Halloween pictures.
