Receiving a convincing letter from her mother, whom she had believed died thirty years ago in a plane crash, Samantha Adams is baffled and travels to Santa Fe, the source of the letter, to investigate. Reprint.
Nashville-based mystery writer Sarah Shankman is the author of the popular title I Still Miss My Man, But My Aim is Getting Better (1996), and the equally popular Samantha Adams series, the latest of which is Digging Up Momma.
a.k.a. Alice Storey Some of her books republished under Shankman.
Digging Up Momma has an absurd plot, unbelievable characters, and more filler than a vegetarian meat loaf. It would have made a barely mediocre short story, but to stretch it out for 275 pages is a crime. Here’s an example of what the reader is in for: A woman receives a message from her mother, who supposedly died 34 years ago, drops everything, travels across several states, checks into the same hotel, and what’s the first thing she does? She goes for a walk around town!!! I had to check the author’s bio on the cover flap to make sure this book was written by an adult and not an 8th grader. Apparently Shankman has written a series of books featuring this same main character and has a loyal following. Well you can count me out. I’m not going back for any more punishment.
The book title, cover, and one review made me question whether to read this story, but I'm glad I did. It's not about exhuming a body, but rather digging into Samantha Adam's mother's past and the truth behind her death. Author Sarah Shankman has a flair for creative expression and whipping up colorful characters. Who is good and who is evil? This was written in 1998 and there are a few old terms, but the story is unique and the mystery well written. Recommended.
This is the fourth Sam Adams book I've read, and I must say I have enjoyed it the most. I won't provide a synopsis of the story -- that has been done repeatedly. I will say that the emotion (parents do that to us don't they) and the excellent writing have provided a story that is hard to put down. The characters Ms. Shankman has created are full of life. Her writing style is engaging.
Seventh in the Samantha Adams series, this adventure is set in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Sam receives a mysterious letter and goes in search of her mother who was supposed to have died years earlier. From the moment she sets off on her journey, she meets a number of characters whose paths intertwine.
This book totally cracked me up. I am amazed to see so few people have read and rated it. If you could use a good (but dark) laugh, get this book right now. Go on! What are you waiting for?
